We travel back to 1935 with Babe Ruth Author, Bob LeMoine and the Sauce is the Boss with Sweet Baby Ray's, Dave Raymond, a 2023 Barbecue Hall of Fame inductee. Bob LeMoine loves baseball and this love began at a very early age. He would lay in bed at night, listening to his small transistor radio and cheer on the Boston Red Sox. Bob is fascinated with Boston and 19th-century baseball history. His latest project is When the Babe Went Back to Boston: Babe Ruth, Judge Fuchs and the Hapless Braves of 1935. It is a fascinating look at Babe Ruth after his time with the New York Yankees ended and he tried to pursue a a second act career as a manager as well as all else from that time until his death. Babe Ruth is considered by many to be the greatest baseball player and this book provides much more interesting information on his life. Dave Raymond aka Sweet Baby Ray has many years of experience in the barbecue industry. In 1982, Dave and his lifelong friend Mike O'Brien used the sauce which Dave's brother Larry developed to build Sweet Baby Ray's, which is now the best-selling barbecue sauce in the country. They sold the business in 2001. In 2005 Dave partnered with his nephew, Larry's son Duce and they opened Sweet Baby Ray's Restaurant. Now a multifaceted business operation, Sweet Baby Ray's boasts two restaurants and two premier catering companies. Dave is also a member of the competition team, Duce's Wild, which has won over 40 awards since it began competing. Dave is a member of the newly inducted 2023 Barbecue Hall of Fame class. Celebrating Episode 200 In Kansas City With NLBM President, Bob Kendrick, Former MLB Player, Ed Hearn, and BBQ HOF Member, Ardie Davis Episode 200 was not going to pass without us doing something special and so we took the show to Kansas City where baseball and barbecue are part of the city's foundation. While there we had the pleasure of spending time with three previous guests. Bob Kendrick is president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Missouri and was our very first podcast guest almost six years ago. After his first appearance he joined us two more times and each discussion was even better than the one before. This was our first time meeting in person and we were overjoyed to meet Bob as we greatly respect his talents as a baseball historian, phenomenal storyteller, and an incredible steward of the game. We talked about his passion for the museum, the history it preserves, and the stories it tells. Go to https://www.nlbm.com/ for more information on Bob and the museum. Ed Hearn is a former Major League Baseball player. He was part of the New York Mets 1986 World Series Championship and played briefly for the Kansas City Royals. We had Ed on once before and Jeff proudly wore Ed's #49 at New York Mets Fantasy Camp. Ed was extremely thoughtful to invite us into his home where we had the chance to try on his World Serious ring as well as see his other championship memorabilia. We met his wife, Trisha and his dog, Hartley. Ed recently received a new kidney and thankfully is feeling better. It is very special the way that Jeff calls Ed #49 and Ed calls Jeff #49. Ardie Davis was a guest once on the show, but meeting him in person was a huge thrill and he met us on a long line at Slap's BBQ. Ardie is a 2016 Barbecue Hall of Fame inductee in the celebrity/humanitarian category. Ardie is a founder of the American Royal Barbecue Sauce Contest which is the world's largest sauce contest. He is a charter member of the KCBS, instrumental in the development of the Certified Barbecue Judge curriculum, and author of the oath recited by each judge prior to judging a contest. We affectionately refer to him as barbecue royalty and you would be hard pressed to find anyone who would say otherwise. The show is filled with congratulatory messages and then Jeff and Len reflect on what the podcast and achieving 200 episodes means to them. We conclude the show with the song, Baseball Always Brings You Home from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. Episode 126 features Maybelle Blair and Shirley Burkovich, former All American Girls Professional Baseball League players who inspired the movie, A League of Their Own and Amy Mills, known as the heiress of barbecue Maybelle Blair and Shirley Burkovich are women who loved playing baseball, were great at it, and were excited to have the opportunity to make money doing it. If you are a fan of the movie, A League of Their Own which reintroduced America to the real-life All American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) then you will enjoy listening to their wonderful stories. Ask Maybelle how she is and she will say, "Pretty good for this old gal, and it is a good day when you wake up on this side of the grass." Shirley played for three AAGPBL teams from 1949-1951, one of which is the famous Rockford Peaches. Maybelle served as inspiration for the character, Mae Mordabito aka All the Way Mae played in the film by Madonna. Ask Maybelle how much Madonna's character resembled her, and she will say not that much, but then Shirley pipes in affirming that the characterization fit Maybelle extremely well. It is that back and forth good-natured ribbing that is so enjoyable and makes one appreciate the special bond they share. At 95 and 89 years of age, they are not even close to letting up from achieving their dream of raising money for a women's baseball museum to be built in Rockford, Illinois. Go to https://www.internationalwomensbaseballcenter.org/donate/ to make a donation or to learn more. Amy Mills is known as a barbecue heiress as she is the daughter of champion pitmaster and Barbecue Hall of Fame inductee, Mike Mills, who was affectionately known as "The Legend." Getting to everything was impossible, but we tried to at least scratch the surface with a conversation that included stories on the books she co-authored with her dad, including James Beard Foundation award-nominated and National Barbecue Association Award of Excellence winner, Peace, Love, and Barbecue and the book, Praise the Lard. We talked about her incredible presentation at The Welcome Conference, which is labeled on YouTube as Amy Mills-Recognizing Right. Amy explained the three principles which apply to her business, which include the two 17th Street Barbecue restaurants and Oncue Consulting: (1) Generosity is a recipe for success. (2) Barbecue is a culture, not a concept. (3) Home is the most excellent place of all. Amy did not always want to be in the family business, but she came back, is happy she did and credits a yellow post-it note for the push. There is even a story involving George Wendt who played Norm on the TV show Cheers. She has attended the school several times, working hard at honing her craft. We can fill the remaining lines talking about her umpiring career, but we also want to mention that she is a Jeopardy champion. We can talk about how umpiring has provided her the opportunity to travel around the world, but then we might miss mentioning her time as a singer/songwriter and that she has opened for Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, and Hall & Oates. In episode 119 we pull off a rare triple play as we have three outstanding guests; author, Dan Joseph, Barbecue Hall of Fame member, Ardie Davis, and BBQ rubs and sauces creator, Dennis Michael Sherman aka Denny Mike. Dan Joseph joined us on episode 51 to discuss his book, Last Ride of the Iron Horse: How Lou Gehrig Fought ALS to Play One Last Championship SeasonSeason and he returns to regale us with stories about Pistol Pete Reiser found in his latest book, Baseball's Greatest What If: The Story & Tragedy of the Brooklyn Dodgers' Pistol Pete Reiser. If Reiser's first season and a half was any indication, not only was he on his way to a Hall of Fame career, but he was on his way to becoming one of the game's greatest. Unfortunately, part of what made Pistol Pete great, was his willingness to put his body on the line no matter what the outcome, and that included crashing into several outfield brick walls. Dan presents Reiser's story in such a way that by the end of the book you will feel awful that Reiser's playing career cut short by injuries and feel regret at missing the talented career that could have been. Ardie Davis aka Remus Powers, Ph.B. is a 2016 Barbecue Hall of Fame member in the celebrity/humanitarian category. Ardie is a founder of the American Royal Barbecue Sauce Contest which is the world's largest sauce contest. He is a charter member of the KCBS, instrumental in the development of the Certified Barbecue Judge curriculum, and author of the oath recited by each judge prior to judging a contest. The iconic Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q restaurant in Decatur, AL was founded in 1925, its classic neon sign still shining brightly today. Chris Lilly, a 4th generation partner, is now pitmaster, as well as the head of the restaurant's competition cooking team, a team that's won a record five Memphis in May World Grand Championships. I'd eaten Chris' cooking before at festivals, but we first connected personally at a Yeti store meet and greet, a company for which he is a sponsor. Alabama barbecue tradition has Big Bob Gibson in its bedrock, and Lilly has not only honored tradition but built on it with creativity, drive and respect for ingredients and the time it takes to learn the craft of cue. He was inducted into the Barbecue Hall of Fame in 2016, and we sat down after he fired up the pits for the first Holy Smokes BBQ Festival here in Charleston, SC.
George "Tuffy" Stone is one of the most influential people in barbecue. He is a six-time World Barbecue Champion Pitmaster, a Barbecue Hall of Fame inductee, a former Marine, a French-trained Chef. He is on the competitive barbecue circuit. He has appeared on the Destination America reality television show BBQ Pitmasters. He runs the team "Cool Smoke" and owns a barbecue restaurant chain called "Q Barbeque". His nickname is "The Professor". He is the author of Cool Smoke- The Art of Great Barbecue. In addition we also have Jed Lirette from Jack Daniel's to discuss all things BBQ.
Ole Hickory Pits is a legendary worldwide brand built by a legend in the industry. David B. Knight is our guest on this episode of the Digital Hospitality podcast where he tells his story of founding Ole Hickory Pits and helping it grow into a massive worldwide company that continually innovates to this day. https://youtu.be/AFN3LZchbxE ➤ MORE PODCAST EPISODES: https://calibbq.media/podcast-episodes ➤ OLE HICKORY PITS ONLINE: https://www.olehickorypits.com/ David Knight and Ole Hickory Pits — When it comes to BBQ, few souls know the people or the business quite like David B. Knight. With almost a half century in the industry, David is the founder of Ole Hickory Pits and an elected member of the Barbecue Hall of Fame. Ole Hickory Pits manufactures and markets modern commercial, competition, and backyard BBQ smoker ovens, as well as barbecue tools, sauce and seasonings, and outdoor lifestyle products. Learn more about the history of Ole Hickory Pits at https://www.olehickorypits.com/about-us/ After opening up his own barbecue restaurant nearly 50 years ago to eventually pivot to manufacturing and selling his own pits, David Knight has put plenty of souls who live for the smoke in business. Our San Diego area restaurant Cali BBQ is built off Ole Hickory Pits. While the Spring Valley location has long fed families from the pits made and manufactured by David and his homegrown business, the new master smokehouse which is currently under construction will provide food, employment and education through the same pits. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSwLeMDn-AQ “We've had two old hickory pits for 13 years that have built our brand,” Shawn Walchef noted on Digital Hospitality. “They built our business. We've done over $30 million in sales just using those two pits and now we've added three more pits in the pandemic and are building a master smokehouse.” While the San Diego multi-hyphenate is thankful for the pits and hopeful for the future, the BBQ Hall of Famer couldn't be happier. “Our favorite thing is to shine in reflected glory of the success of our customers,” admits David. After years of going door to door selling his pits, David has become not just a community builder with his pits but an entrepreneur in the food and entertainment industry. Becoming friends with the likes of Guy Fieri and helping all kindred souls with a love of the smoke who come his way, David has grown Ole Hickory Pits by keeping an open mind and extending a helping hand. In fact, in the last ten years, David has fed over nine million people hot barbecue as part of relief efforts that have devastated various parts of the United States. Even when times are tough, David Knight and Ole Hickory Pits are committed to working hard and empowering others. “It's personal and it's really a fun sort of business,” reflects David on a life in barbecue. “Warren Buffett said that the happiest man in the world is the one that dances to work every morning. Well, you can see me skipping down the sidewalk, going to the office, because I still enjoy it.” As expressed, the foundation of Ole Hickory Pits allows not just David to smile all the way to work, but plenty of other entrepreneurs the opportunity to possess the same spirit in the same space. This of course includes Shawn who is using Ole Hickory Pits to take Cali BBQ and Cali BBQ Media to the next level. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57N0IGa-HTs “We plan on having ten Ole Hickory Pits and building a media center around it,” begins Shawn, “So that we can teach other people around the world how they can build one location, a commissary kitchen, and then have these ghost kitchen micro-locations so that we can get more barbecue to more people. We can make a bigger impact on the world.” The ‘each one, teach one' ethos are fully embedded in the barbecue community and definitely are shown by the examples of those who have learned from David.

I will allow these guys to introduce themselves and tell us what makes them such a good fit for this committee, and then, we will run down the list of names and talk about their contributions to the live fire industry. Hopefully, at the end, we will all feel comfortable enough to give our own "hypothetical list" of 3 that we would like to see ushered into the HOF this year. It should be an incredible second hour and I hope you can join us. BBQ Central Show Sponsors! (May 12, 2020 - Hour One) The 2nd Tuesday in May (and every month) brings a visit from Meathead at Amazingribs.com. Tonight we discuss his repeat appearance on the semifinalist list for the 2020 Barbecue Hall of Fame. 2019 was his first time on the list and he didn't make the cut. Does making the list a 2nd year in a row increase his chances and what does he think his shot at getting in this year is? I will also ask him to make his case publicly for inclusion to the living Hall of Fame members. After Meathead, I will be joined by the creators and hosts of the Pitmaster's Podcast, Rusty Monson and Anthony Lujan. Both guys are pitmasters of their own competition teams but they come together each week to produce a slickly done podcast talking to big names in the live-fire industry. Tonight I have them on to talk about their experience this past weekend in Lehi, UT at an SCA event. How many people were there, how was it put together compared to a regular setting, what (if any) safety measures were taken in keeping with distance regulations and so forth and why did they want to do this in the first place? I might ask them about their thoughts on the BBQ HOF semifinalists as well. BBQ Central Show Sponsors!
