"DON'T BE A TURKEY PERSON" "We had to coach basic fundamentals like character. But half the team was still engaged in the same destructive behavior that got them to 4-95. So I went to my player Bo Bo, asking him why these kids weren't buying into the important stuff. Bobo said, 'Coach, they're trying to figure out if you're a Turkey Person or not.' And I said, 'Bo Bo, what the hell is a Turkey Person?' He's like, "Coach, every Thanksgiving, people give us turkeys and we take them because we got none. But then they leave and we never see them again. And it kind of makes you wonder if they're doing that because they really care about us or if they're doing that to make themselves feel good. He looked me dead in the eyes and said, Coach, what the hell are you really doing here, man?' And what a Turkey Person is, is a fraud. And I can say that to you, because I was one. An Army of Normal Folks is launching a campaign called "Don't Be A Turkey Person" to challenge all of us this Thanksgiving, and it isn't about not eating turkey. Not long after the Turkey Person story and the front page of the newspaper had a picture of me, my son said, 'Hey Dad, what are your players' names?' An eight year old boy shocked me. He revealed that I'd been telling everybody everything I was doing, but people didn't even know the kids' names who were actually doing the work. I reversed course immediately and gave them credit. And this crazy thing happened, the kids started buying in. We need to create An Army of Normal Folks, not Turkey Persons, who fill areas of need, for the right reasons. And if we did that, we literally can change this country. And that's a lesson that was taught to me by a 17-year-old kid."     PSLF Program Eliminated $51 Billion In Student Debt For Public & NPO   As reported by Philanthropy.com, the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, initiated in 2007, was designed to alleviate student debts for those dedicating a decade to nonprofits or government roles. However, the program was largely unknown and challenging to secure until recent rule changes and promotion. The Biden administration's reforms in October 2021 breathed new life into the program, erasing an astounding $51 billion in student debt for over 700,000 public service workers. Yet, only about 15% of the 9 million eligible workers have applied. Despite earlier bureaucratic challenges and a high rejection rate, recent changes like loan consolidation and credit for past payments have transformed the lives of many by freeing them from significant student debt. The nonprofit sees an opportunity to back high-impact startups aligned with its conservation mission that also have potential for strong financial returns. Direct investing represents a shift beyond TNC's past practice of relying on outside managers and index funds for its endowment. The approach shows how nonprofits with sizable endowments could strategically deploy capital to advance their mission as well as financial goals.
