Gio and Jerry filled in for a sick Boomer, discussing their health issues, including Jerry's penis camera scope story (with many 'penis' drops from Eddie). Gio predicted another bad year for the Giants and Jets in the upcoming NFL draft, stating Justin Fields "stinks" and neither team will draft Shedeur Sanders. C-Lo gave his first update, likely with hiccups. Dave Sims called Aaron Judge's homer as the Yankees swept the Royals and will play the Rays in their spring training home. The Mets lost their series in Minnesota. The hour ended with news of an umpire hit by a line drive in the Mets game, highlighting the need for umpire batting helmets.
In a heated matchup at Great American Ball Park, the Cincinnati Reds fell 5-3 to the Seattle Mariners on April 16, 2025, snapping their four-game win streak. The game, however, was overshadowed by a controversial umpire decision that left Reds fans fuming. In the eighth inning, with the Reds trailing 5-3, star shortstop Elly De La Cruz stole second base, a play that could have shifted momentum. Umpire Chris Segal, however, called De La Cruz out on an interference call, a decision that baffled players, coaches, and fans alike. Posts on X captured the outrage, with fans booing loudly and one user calling it a "phantom call" that changed the game's outcome. The interference ruling, which occurred with runners on base, killed a potential Reds rally. De La Cruz's speed and base-stealing prowess (4 steals this season) made the call particularly costly. Despite a valiant effort, including three runs in the seventh fueled by Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Jose Trevino, Cincinnati couldn't overcome the early 5-0 deficit or the disputed call. Cal Raleigh's two homers and Bryce Miller's eight strikeouts powered Seattle, while Reds starter Nick Martinez struggled, allowing four runs. X posts reflected fans' frustration, with some demanding accountability from umpires and others lamenting missed opportunities. The game's box score shows De La Cruz was caught stealing, but video replays suggested the call was questionable. While umpiring controversies are part of baseball, this incident stung a Reds team fighting to maintain momentum. With a rubber match looming, Cincinnati hopes to rebound against Seattle's Bryan Woo, but the bitter taste of this loss lingers.

Fungal networks in the ground ferry crucial nutrients to plants. But how do brainless organisms form complex supply chain networks? Also, in this year's baseball spring training, the new Automated Ball-Strike System is helping settle challenges to home plate pitch calls.Scientists Observe Fungi Creating Complex Supply ChainsAs the leaves start to pop out, it's natural to look up and admire the trees. But actually, there's a lot of action happening underneath your feet. Beneath you is a complex network of fungal trade routes carrying essential nutrients to the roots of plants, mined from the soil by fungus. It's a subterranean supply chain. But how exactly do these complex networks form? How does the fungus decide where to ship which resources, or where to build roads? Basically, how does a brainless thread make decisions?Host Flora Lichtman is joined by Dr. Toby Kiers, an author on a recent study of those networks, and professor of evolutionary biology at Vrije University in Amsterdam. She's also the executive director of the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks (SPUN).A Rookie Robot Umpire Takes The FieldBaseball fans are eagerly awaiting opening day. And while spring training is a time for teams to test out new players and strategies, it's also a time for Major League Baseball to trial new rules and procedures. One of the things that the league has been testing this year is a robotic system to call balls and strikes. The Automated Ball-Strike System, which is based on the same technology used for line judging in tennis, isn't calling every pitch, but is used to back up a challenge system at the plate. The tech is already in use in Triple-A games, and could make it to the major leagues in the years ahead. Baseball writer Davy Andrews joins Host Ira Flatow to talk about the technology, and how it could subtly change the rules of the game.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Episode 280 features former Major League Baseball Umpire, Al Clark and barbecue aficionado, Big Rome sharing wonderfully entertaining stories and bringing the heat. Al Clark was a Major League Baseball umpire for 30 years, working more than 3,000 games, including two All-Star Games, ten playoff series, and two World Series. We discuss his book, Called Out But Safe: A Baseball Umpire's Journey. The book was first published more than 10 years ago, but the stories are timeless and extremely entertaining. Al has been on the field for many historic games, including Nolan Ryan's 300th win, Cal Ripken's record breaker, and the 1989 World Series which will forever be remembered, not becuase of who won, but due to an earthquake. Al dealt with Earl Weaver, Billy Martin, and Dick Williams, all of whom were known for their harsh treamant of umpires. Hearing Al tell the story of his "fake" confrontation with Lou Piniella is worth the price of admission. Big Rome has taken his love and passion for barbecue and incorporated that into so many facets. He has created a line-up of barbecue rubs, does catering, makes entertaining cooking videos, and is a brand ambassador. He has also dabbled in the podcast space, creating a barbecue fire side chat for his fellow barbecue lovers, especially his Texas Barbecue Crew. Big Rome is a Los Angeles Dodgers fan and we discuss the team's World Series victory, the upcoming season, and other baseball talk. Who needs a solo act when you can have a dynamic duo? In Part Two of this series, Mary Shea, General Manager of Hire Quotient and former co-CEO of Mediafly, takes us inside the world of co-CEOship—a growing leadership trend that's part genius, part juggling act. Mary unpacks what makes it work: trust, complementary skills, and a shared vision. But she's also refreshingly candid about the pitfalls—slower decision-making, the need for a strong board, and why even the best co-leaders need a “business couples counselor.” If you're rethinking leadership structures, this one's for you. Key Highlights of Our Interview: AI's Impact on Sales Teams “AI is paving the way for smaller, more agile sales teams, moving away from the traditional 80/20 rule toward a future where 80% of the team delivers 100% of the revenue.” The Rise of the Consultant Seller “AI acts as a coach on the salesperson's shoulder, helping them become more advisory-oriented, and enabling deeper impact in customer interactions.” Why Two CEOs? “In today's complex world, no single leader can address everything, from geopolitical challenges to the rapid pace of AI innovation. The co-CEO model allows for a divide-and-conquer approach.” Challenges of Co-Leadership “Decision-making can be slower, and sometimes we wish we could just do things our way. But alignment is key, and when it works, it's incredibly impactful.” Who's the Umpire? “Our ‘umpire' is our investor and board. If we truly can't resolve a disagreement, we rely on their input as the ultimate decision-maker.” The Professional Marriage “Co-CEOship is like a professional marriage—it requires resilience, commitment, and sometimes even a ‘marriage counselor' in the form of an executive coach to navigate tough patches.” _________________________ Connect with us: Host: Vince Chan | Guest: Mary Shea PhD --Chief Change Officer-- Change Ambitiously.
