The time has come once again to look back fondly on the 2015 Blue Jays. This time, the guys look back at a time they had blocked out of their memory: how the series against the Kansas City Royals came undone. Remember that Amish kid with the glove? The opposite field singles? The Ryan Goins missed pop up? We're putting ourselves through all of that again. But first, in episode one, all the fond fuzzy memories of how a .500 team made their first playoff run in more than two decades and brought baseball back to life in the city. After my moose hunt in Alaska, I went back and checked my Fitbit. When I took the shot, my heart rate was in the 160s. I felt perfectly calm in that moment, but I also know that once my heart rate gets above 130, I will skip portions of my process unless I take a mental pause. My guest today, Ryan Maid, is a psychologist and expert on stress and performance in high stress environments. I met Ryan after I was wounded in Afghanistan while he was serving as a Navy Psychologist for the Sixth Marine Regiment. Later, Ryan moved on to be the Command Psychologist for Naval Special Warfare Training Command. After retiring from the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander, he became a sports psychologist for the Atlanta Braves and now the Kansas City Royals. In this episode, Ryan and I discuss the ins and outs of stress. In a recent press conference, John Sherman, the primary owner of the Kansas City Royals, was asked if the team was exploring the possibility of building a new stadium in downtown Kansas City. This is something that's been talked about in Kansas City for years, and it's a question Sherman gets asked often. It made news this time because Sherman publicly acknowledged that, yes, the team was exploring that option (among others) and that he anticipated some level of public funding would be needed. In this episode of Upzoned, we're talking about the potentials and pitfalls of a downtown stadium and how much (if any) of it should be paid for by Kansas City taxpayers. Regular host Abby Kinney and co-host Chuck Marohn are both out for the week. Subbing in for them are Rachel Quednau, program director at Strong Towns and host of The Bottom-Up Revolution podcast, as well as John Pattison, the Strong Towns content manager…and lifelong Kansas City Royals fan. Rachel and John evaluate the case for building a new stadium in Kansas City's downtown, its risks and rewards, and why the clock is ticking for the Royals on whether or not to pursue this. They also discuss whether or not the economic rationale for public funding—more jobs, more tax revenue, etc.—is likely to live up to the hype. Then in the downzone, John describes a book that has him taking photographs of his pencil sharpener (the promised pictures are below), and Rachel recommends this weekly digest from her Strong Towns colleagues. Additional Show Notes “Royals exploring downtown ballpark options,” by Anne Rogers “Should Kansas City Taxpayers Foot the Bill for a New Downtown Stadium?” by John Pattison “Conventional Thinking: Stop Pinning all Your City's Hopes on Big Projects and Events,” by Rachel Quednau “The Trickle of the Fire Hose,” by Daniel Herriges John Pattison (Instagram) Theme Music by Kemet the Phantom (Soundcloud)

David and Dan do their best delaying the series recap by talking about the recent combined no hitter thrown by the Brewers. Dan was impressed with this outing but still doesn't believe it should be celebrated and David again tries to convince Dan of the errors in his views. The Twins drop 2 of 3 to the Kansas City Royals at Target Field in the battle for last place in the AL central. Despite his failed bunt attempt Buxton is looking more and more like the April Byron Buxton as he continues to work his way back from his most recent stint on the IL. Polanco continues his all-star level play but a lack of timely hitting led to two frustrating losses. Dan wants to expand the DH to allow them to hit for position players, and David wants to know if Nick Gordon is ready for a starting position on this roster next season.
