This week, Lisa Weaver is joined by Professor Yolanda Norton, Hebrew Bible scholar, and creator of the Beyoncé Mass, a womanist worship experience. Lisa and Yolanda explain why Mizpah, a fortified military city in the Ancient Near East, should have been a safe space for Jephthah's Daughter. They also delve into the social customs of the day and why some may choose not to fool with Jephthah and his promise to God.
You just need to listen. https://www.beyoncemass.com/ Thank you to Reverend Yolanda for her creative force. He has curated and music and life's work of Beyoncé into life changing, culture impacting expression of humanity and empowerment for black women. Rev. Yolanda M. Norton is the H. Eugene Farlough Chair of Black Church Studies at San Francisco Theological Seminary. Her womanist scholarship explores how Scripture treats foreign women and how this has led to the oppression of women of color who encounter the Bible today. She is also a PhD candidate in Hebrew Bible and Ancient Israel and Theology and Practice Fellow at Vanderbilt University. Rev. Norton is ordained in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and she holds a Master of Divinity and Master of Theological Studies degree from Wesley Theological Seminary and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Syracuse University. https://www.instagram.com/beyoncemass/ Special thanks for our BraveMaker ambassador: Keren Southall for co-hosting the conversation. https://www.instagram.com/kerensouth/ www.BraveMaker.com --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bravemaker/support
A few years ago, a young seminary professor in San Francisco felt inspired by musical icon Beyoncé Knowles Carter to produce a worship service around her songs. The result was the Beyoncé Mass which highlighted Beyoncé music along with Biblical scriptures and positive messages. The latest incarnation was recently held in New York City. Should womanist theology reflect the success of contemporary women on par with those in the Christian and Hebrew Scriptures or is this simply modern idolatry. And Episcopal Church in San Francisco California has played Beyonce’s music during mass. According to the article in the link below, “San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral is planning to host a Beyoncé Mass on April 25, using the pop icon’s music to celebrate black female spirituality.” The fact that Beyonce's music was being played during mass was advertised to draw people into the mass. The apparent intent was to draw in people who belong to different ethnic and minority groups especially black women. Many people have voiced opposition to Beyonce’s music being played during mass. What is your viewpoint on this? Should certain types of music not ever be listen to? Or should certain types of music be restricted from church? Should only Gospel Church type music and hymns be played or performed in church?
