Brenda Renderos and Lamont Hartman join Ken for a lively discussion around the illusive dream of reconciliation in our neighborhoods, politics, and churches. Lamont is the lead Pastor of Reconcile Church - a place for seekers, the disillusioned, and those who no longer relate to traditional places of worship. Brenda traveled with Ken on the Civil Rights Tour of the South and has worked along with him at the Center for Restorative Justice. She is a Certified Life Coach with a focus on spiritual direction. Brenda, Lamont and Ken affirm that a commitment to racial reconciliation is hard work - and our existing churches and institutions have fallen well short of facing our own complicity, leaving many feeling alienated and isolated. Lamont is a PhD candidate at San Francisco Theological Seminary. His dissertation focuses on the plight of pastors of color in historically, predominantly white churches. They finish with a lively review of Lamont's Orange County event on MLK Day. SHOW NOTESBecome a PatronSupport the show

The Rev. Dr. Laurie Garrett-Cobbina Dean of the San Francisco Theological Seminary, Shaw Chair for CPE Program, and Professor of Pastoral Care and Education at San Francisco Theological Seminary/University of Redlands, San Anselmo, CA. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King legacy we gather to celebrate today matters. Just as Jesus revealed the power and glory of God through how he acted, what he said, who he befriended, who he included, Martin Luther King's prophetic ministry reveals something powerful to society, the religious world in general, and the Christian Church in particular. Our gathering today is God, again, breaking into our self-interests and telling us to hear the sound of freedom, and see today as an original moment to strive for justice and freedom, not just as a figment of fond remembrance.

Please listen to the beginning of this episode for a major update. I cannot thank you all enough for the last 3 years. You have changed my life. Thank you.  Trigger warning: homophobia, transphobia, self-hatred, discrimination, hate crimes, mental health distress, addiction, suicide, counseling abuse, emotional abuse, sexual assault & investigations, brief talk about school shootings via Columbine, graphic description of suicide (time stamp: 1:02:00-1:07:00). This week we have the incredible Erin Green (She/They) of REAP (Religious Exemption Accountability Project) on the podcast to talk about homophobia and discrimination at Christian Colleges. Erin (She/They) is the Campus and Alumni Organizer for REAP. They are an affirming biblical scholar and LGBTQIA+ activist. Erin has a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies from Azusa Pacific University and an M.Div. from San Francisco Theological Seminary. If you listened to episode 24, we talk quite a bit about REAP. REAP fights for the safety, bodily autonomy, justice, and human rights of LGBTQIA+ and other communities marginalized at many predominantly white, taxpayer-funded religious schools and colleges. Using campus organizing, storytelling through podcasting, documentary film, and speaking and preaching on campuses throughout the country, REAP empowers students, faculty, staff and alumni at these institutions to advocate for human rights, while shining a light on the dangers and abuses of a major educational pipeline of white Christian Supremacy. If you want to follow REAP and learn more about what they're doing and how to support it, you can visit them online here and follow them @REAP_lgbtq . You can also reach out to REAP if you are a queer student who is facing discrimination or hatred in a religious school. Cultures across the world deal with death differently, and the United States is no exception. How do we practice liberation and anti-oppression when we are grieving?   This week our special guest is hospice chaplain Rev. Yung Me Morris. When it comes to death, we often associate the concept of a dignified death with medical aid in dying, referencing physician-assisted suicide. These conversations often neglect other methods of preserving dignity in dying, or more accurately, living. Research shows that people who receive quality/holistic end of life care live longer and happier lives until they pass on. This week we discuss the difficult topics of grief, death, and dying, exploring the importance of palliative care and current approaches to end of life care structures in the US Healthcare system that center the wholeness of a human being.   Rev. Yung Me Suh Morris is a First Generation Korean American who was born in Seoul, South Korea. Together with her parents and younger brother, she emigrated to the United States, Chicago, IL, specifically, where she grew up speaking Mid-western English, navigating multiple cultures and developing a deep abiding love for deep dish pizza and lasagna.   Rev. Morris earned her BA and MA in Education Ministries from Wheaton College and earned her MDiv from San Francisco Theological Seminary. Rev. Morris' ministry includes pastoring parishes, chaplaincy in hospitals and hospice, and street chaplaincy with the unhoused. Rev. Morris and her spouse, Morgan, have three children (two out of the nest and one nearly out) and three miniature poodles (that will never leave home) in West Chester, PA.   Among her interests, Rev. Morris is a Certified Massage Therapist specializing in Deep Tissue, Trauma Release and Acupressure. She is also a Reiki Master Teacher, yoga practitioner and dances because the pleasure of it connects her deeply to Spirit.

With no business background, she operated the restaurant like a church, caring for people and building relationships to become an award-winning 4-4.5 Star beacon in the San Francisco Mid-Market District. “I've never left the ministry. It took on a different form,” reflects Kim, who says she thinks of herself as providing pastoral care to her customers and employees, listening to their stories, and “feeding their souls.” Her entrepreneurship continued in the opening of the Fermentation Lab in Mid-market SF, Divine Indulgence Catering, and, most recently, work in the wine industry in Napa. In 2020, Jeannie earned the Distinguished Alumni Award from San Francisco Theological Seminary and now serves on both the Board of Trustees of the University of Redlands and the Board of Directors of SFTS. She also serves on the Mid-market Central Benefit District SF board and recently joined SF Farm Bureau.

What about our culture actively produces lonely, angry, and isolated white men? This week we discuss the dynamic we often don't talk about - the manufacturing white supremacy, toxic masculinity, and an American-hypercapitalist image. We are joined by special guest, chaplain Bentley Stewart to explore how we can challenge the "loneliness epidemic" bred from whiteness and capitalism and work towards a world where community and equality are keys to our collective connection and healing.   Bentley Stewart and his wife live in St. Petersburg, Florida and he has two adult sons. Currently, he serves as the chaplain of St. Joseph's Children's Hospital. Previously, Bentley pastored Christian Church of Vacaville, California for four years. Before that, he worked as a chaplain for people experiencing homelessness, planted a church, managed co-curricular activities for ministers in formation with Disciples Seminary Foundation. In his decade of hospital ministry, Bentley pursued interests in pediatrics, palliative care, clinical ethics, inter-professional communication, and cultural bridging. He is ordained by the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), is endorsed as a chaplain by Disciples Home Mission, and serves as one of the denomination's anti-racism trainers. Bentley holds a BA from Flagler College and an MDiv from the University of Redlands Graduate School of Theology, home of San Francisco Theological Seminary.

Bill Reichart talks to Roger Matkin, from San Antonio, about the importance and impact of discipleship from his latest book, “Putting It All Together.” Roger was born and spent his early years in Del Rio, Texas on the US/Mexican border. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Physics from Texas A&M University in 1967, earned his Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1970, and his Doctor of Ministry from San Francisco Theological Seminary in 1988 with a focus on nurturing spiritual growth. During his career in campus ministry, Roger served on seven campuses in Weatherford, Fort Worth, and San Antonio. In 1994, Roger was asked to begin a local CMDA ministry in San Antonio and the UT Health Science Center. He embraced the opportunity to impact student lives during these critical years and formed lasting relationships which span four decades. In retirement, the author continues to pursue his life passions: spending time with Melva, his wife of 54 years, and his “kids" and grandkids, fishing, hunting, charcuterie, cooking, carpentry, gardening, and writing. "Putting It All Together" is exactly what the title suggests: a compilation of much that the author has learned on the anvil of experience, taught to students, written about in a variety of formats, and confirmed in the day-to-day rhythms of living the Christian life. As I write this, another mass shooting has occurred in Nashville, TN. Three children and three adults were gunned down. In this episode we will be talking about guns, gun violence and most importantly, gun violence prevention. This episode was recorded on March 8th of 2023 and already, less than 3 months into the year, there have already been more than 100 mass shootings in our country. Statistics on gun violence seem to only go in one direction, up. For context, here are a few statistics to help us all understand the magnitude of this problem:Children in the US are 12 times more likely to die from firearms than children in the next 25 industrialized nations combined. In 2021, gun violence killed 48,830 people in the U.S., a nearly 8% increase from 2020's record-breaking magnitude of firearm deaths. Among those killed by gun violence in 2021, 2,571 were children (aged 0-17) – a 12.7% increase over the previous year.Firearm Suicide Deaths Increased by 8.4%Firearm Homicide Deaths Increased by 8.1%,  These statistics are shocking and disheartening. And what is even more infuriating is that most citizens across the political spectrum want to see sensible gun laws put in place, but our politicians don't have the courage to legislate them into law. So, in light of this often disheartening news, I have two guests with me today to help us understand the spiritual and practical steps that they are using to empower communities and people and begin to make our communities safer for everyone.Be sure to check out our Benders of the Arc website for more information. My guests are The Rev. In all my years of teaching about decision making, no topic generates more angst than the need to know. But how do you know what you know? How do you know when you know what you know? And how do you integrate this knowing into some of the most important decisions of your life?In this episode, I invited Dave Evans onto the show to talk all about these topics of knowing and discernment. Dave is the co-author of Designing Your Life and Designing Your New Work Life. He co-founded the Stanford Life Design lab and holds the title of discernment lead for a social impact accelerator. He shares a number of things he's learned from sitting with thousands of lives via the Designing Your Life programs, including how to go beyond cognitive knowing, the important distinction between certainty and faith, how to approach when things go wrong, and exercises for honing your discernment.Topics Covered1:01 A story of how Dave ran smack up against this discernment topic2:27 It's ok to not have it all figured out4:40 Defining discernment5:58 You're not just a brain on a transport system7:36 Overcoming resistance to tapping into the emotional center of knowing10:11 The peak-knowing and trough-knowing exercise10:59 Your brain announced it, but your brain didn't do it12:21 The importance of articulating and reflecting on what's happening12:54 Surrogation vs. analysis14:47 We are humans, not robots15:26 There is no knowing. After four years in alternative energy, it was clear that this idea's time hadn't come yet. So while en route to biomedical engineering, Dave accepted an invitation to work for Apple, where he led the mouse team and introduced laser printing to the masses. When Dave's boss at Apple left to start Electronic Arts, Dave joined as the company's first VP of Talent, dedicated to making “software worthy of the minds that use it.”Having participated in forming the corporate cultures at Apple and EA, Dave decided his best work was in helping organizations build creative environments where people could do great work and love doing it. So he went out on his own working with start-up teams, large corporate executives, non-profit leaders, and countless young adults. They were all asking the same question. “What should I do with my life?” Helping people get traction on that question finally took Dave first to Cal and then Stanford, where Dave is co-founder of the Stanford Life Design Lab in the Stanford Design Program.Dave and his partner Bill Burnett made their popular Stanford course Designing Your Life into a New York Times #1 Bestselling book of the same name, released in September 2016, followed by Designing Your Work Life in February 2020 and Designing Your New Work Life in October 2021.Dave holds a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford and a graduate diploma in Contemplative Spirituality from San Francisco Theological Seminary.ResourcesDesigning Your Life websiteDesigning Your Life bookDesigning Your *New Work Life bookTo learn more from Michelle about decision making, check outThe Ask A Decision Engineer websiteHer Personal Decision Toolkit course on MavenHer Decision Toolkit course for coaches and thought partners on Maven
