The Army is using the new blended retirement system to make it easier for soldiers to save for their futures. That system has its trade offs compared to the previous retirement plan. The brass worry it could lead to difficulties retaining mid-career officers. Federal News Network's Scott Maucione spoke with Beth Asch, senior economist at the RAND Corporation, about some new findings. Hear more on Federal Drive with Tom Temin.
Federal News Network reporter Nicole Ogrysko about the potential for a shutdown. Also on today's the show is Executive Vice President of the American Armed Forces Mutual Aid Association Retired Brig. General Mike Meese to discuss the new blended retirement system for military personnel. He’ll give an update on what military members are and should be doing with their Thrift Savings Plan accounts. For military veterans, the option of blended retirement sparks a lot of questions, or at least it should. Service members know they'll get an annuity, but they've also got to make regular contributions to the Thrift Savings Plan. For the latest in this still-evolving system, retired Army Brig. Gen. Michael Meese, executive vice president of insurance provider AAFMAA, joined Federal Drive with Tom Temin.
There's five general values guiding veterans in their choise of when to transition: Respect, Resolve, Honesty, Identity, Clarity. For me, it was Identity & Clarity that originally drove me to pursue early retirement from the Coast Guard. Unfortunately, the opportunity for early retirement closed. While I'm humbled to continue service in the uniform, what I realized was my choice to serve isn't where my values come from. It's the other way around--I find the highest & best opportunity to live based on my values. Uniform or not. How do your values factor into your choice to stay in the military or leave? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/militarytransition/support

"Here are the only numbers you need to consider: just one out of six servicemembers stays in uniform long enough to earn a pension." --Doug Nordman & Curtez Riggs, Military Guide Here's the math in the military's new Blended Retirement System: An E-7 at 20 years makes about $21,000 a year in pension; An O-4 at 20 years makes about $36,000 a year in pension. Blended Retirement (BRS) will change the conversation about military service. Traditionally, there were four year gates members most considered whether to stay in or get out: Years 5, 10, 20, & 25. With the average retirement pay reducing about $10,000 a year across the board, that 10 year conversation will become even more important. Yes--we don't solely serve because of the salary. But, that salary will become even more important in transitioning. Because the "apples to apples" comparison between active duty retirement and post-military salary will change. And let's be honest--retirement pay will never go up. This 3-part series of posts goes into the math, meaning, & dice of military retirement pay. Today, let's talk about the math. SPONSOR If you want to sponsor this podcast, send me an email: travis@battleandrhythm.com SELECTED LINKS The Math. The DOD's Blended Retirement Pay calculator is here. http://militarypay.defense.gov/Calculators/BRS/ However, I say avoid that calculator, and use this one: http://militarypay.defense.gov/Calculators/RMC-Calculator/ Your comparison should be a salary to salary comparison, not a future potential retirement to today's salary. And compare WITHOUT all the taxed incentives, pays, and untaxed allowances. If you want to make $120,000/year after 10 years of service at a certain location, the second calculator will show you your true tax rate. Compare that with your level of military rank & salary. SHOW NOTES [00:00:40] The first tactic is simple but it's not easy. The first tactic is to Know Your Math. [00:04:43] There is no separation between pay and allowance after the uniform. You have to consider: how much do you want to make? How much makes you free? [00:06:15] Life has a barrier of entry. There are things that we want to do, that we want to enjoy doing. So what will they cost you? How much do you need to go to enjoy the lifestyle? DISCLAIMER I am not a Certified Financial Planner, or Accountant. Join special guest and financial guru Doug Nordman as we explore the tax season - do's and don'ts of filing military family returns, we define the differences in the new retirement scheme and the existing scheme, and we will also touch on some financial savings tips to help make your dreams of worry-free life a reality. Doug is a self-made millionaire and surfer, a Navy submarine veteran, a Navy spouse, and Navy dad, and is the author of the Military Guide to Financial Independence and Retirement. I think we can trust his advice, huh! MMSRS is a 2-hour web-based call-in radio show (516-453-9167), hosted by Dave Etter, focusing on the needs of men married to serving military members, both men and women. Male Military Spouses are a small niche of military spouses, comprising of roughly 10% of all military spouses. We feel left out, usually, at support functions - especially those designed with the spouses being identified as "wives"! We get cajoled at playgrounds where our kids play, from the mommies there who think we don't belong. We are proud SAHDs, who gave up our careers to follow our spouses as they dedicate thier lives to defend our country! Here, on this show, we come together and share beer recipes, diaper changing techniques, financial discoveries - manly things, for men! Typically airs most Fridays, rated R for the cussing that can occur (downgraded to G if we play nice), and always available for download (podcast) immediately following each show.
