Let's Talk TCA Podcast
Upper School Updates with Dr. Jeff D. Williams: Episode 26

Let's Talk TCA Podcast

On today's podcast episode, we have our Head of School, Dr. Jeff Williams. He talks with our host Cynthia Yanof about the new prefect system, junior leadership inauguration, curriculum updates, new coaching staff, and parent survey results. We are so glad to have Dr. Williams on the podcast to update us on everything happening at TCA. Dr. Williams tells us about April's Junior Leadership Inauguration for our TCA juniors. It is a program designed to call students into the school's leadership for the following year at the end of their junior year. We ask parents to come to a ceremony and to come alongside them. We are calling students to be the best that they can be, where they can influence and impact the student body at TCA. We give the student a medallion with the TCA logo and this scripture on the back. (To whom much is given, much will be required. Luke 12:48). Parents stand and pray a blessing over them to lead well the following year. The prefect system is also a new program for the upper school next year. This program came from the Oxford Educational System. This program gives students more ownership and voice in the culture and daily life of the school. Dr. Williams thinks students must have a voice – they impact morale and school spirit. Dr. Williams has used this system at the last two schools he has led, and its influence on school culture is impressive. Dr. Williams met with the junior class in February to introduce the program based on character demonstrated through leadership. Seven prefects will oversee seven different areas of the school. Each prefect will have a faculty mentor for the year and a committee of students. This program allows upper school students to be involved in leadership through these committees. Thirty-nine juniors applied for the seven positions and were interviewed by a selection committee of nine, including five faculty selected by the junior class. Prefects will be announced after the junior leadership inauguration. Another new program beginning next year is the Biblical Immersion and Worldview Initiative, headed by Bob Dyer. We want to ensure our students are equipped to enter the world. We want our students to know what the scriptures say and how to apply it to the decisions and choices they are making in life. Practically this will help to equip and train our faculty to be more intentional. The results of the parent survey were emailed out to parents. The email talks about areas where parents believe TCA is doing well and those areas that need improvement. The results have been circulated to the board of trustees, school heads, and department heads. We will be doing a homework survey for middle and upper school students. We will be intentional about change and only change what needs focus to use our energies wisely. Here are a few more updates: Tonja King has been hired as the new volleyball coach and dance coach. Fran Legband introduced a new Humanities Core Curriculum in a video a few weeks ago. Jon Millet introduced new art courses in a video that makes our art program accessible to more students.

It's tough to rob an armored car. But on November 28, 1994, a group of men did exactly that. Their crime was brazen. They took control of the vehicle in a mall parking lot, in broad daylight. They exercised unnecessary violence, too. They shot the Wells Fargo van driver, John Magoch, in the head and left him slumped over in the front seat. When the armored car was discovered abandoned in a church parking lot a few hours later, the money — and the criminals — were long gone.   Then Brandi tells us about a mysterious illness. Janet Overton hadn't been feeling well. She turned to doctors for answers, but couldn't get any. Whatever plagued her was tough to identify. And then, one day, Janet collapsed in her driveway. The 46-year-old woman, who'd been healthy until recently, was now dead. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “The Wells Fargo Heist” episode of American Justice “Convict says manhunter framed him” by Dennis Wagner for the Arizona Republic “New questions in  ‘94 armored-car murder,” by Michael Kiefer for the Arizona Republic “Ring v. Ozark Highlands Radio is a weekly radio program that features live music and interviews recorded at Ozark Folk Center State Park’s beautiful 1,000-seat auditorium in Mountain View, Arkansas. In addition to the music, our “Feature Host” segments take listeners through the Ozark hills with historians, authors and personalities who explore the people, stories, and history of the Ozark region. This week, traditional folk troubadours and Ozark originals Cathy Barton & Dave Para perform live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, interviews with Cathy & Dave. Mark Jones offers an archival recording of his famous parents, Grandpa & Ramona Jones, singing the song “Kentucky.” Writer, professor, and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins profiles the last in a series of three Ozark Civil War Ballads, “The Battle of Prairie Grove.” Long time purveyors of traditional old time music, Dave and Cathy are outstanding performers with a rich history tied to many well-known old time musicians in the Ozark region. Cathy Barton is well versed in both clawhammer banjo and hammered dulcimer. She’s performed and toured with Ramona Jones and Jimmy Driftwood among others, and was a featured hammered dulcimer player at one of the first Walnut Valley festivals in Kansas. Dave Para is a guitarist and a longtime resident of Booneville, Missouri. He has a great fondness for Civil War era songs and folklore. Along with Bob Dyer, Dave was a stalwart in the central Missouri folk music scene in the mid 70’s. It was during that time he met and teamed up with Cathy. The two currently live in Booneville, MO, and perform regularly at festivals and workshops around the United States. In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers an archival recording of his famous parents, Grandpa & Ramona Jones, singing a song about Grandpa’s birthplace called “Kentucky,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. From his series entitled “Back in the Hills,” writer, professor and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins profiles the last of three Ozark Civil War ballads. This episode features a recording of Sara Jo Fendley, accompanying herself on the banjo, performing “the Battle of Prairie Grove” at the Leslie Homecoming on June 13, 1963. The recording was made by collector John Quincy Wolf Jr., and is preserved by Lyon College on its John Quincy Wolf Folklore Collection website. http://web.lyon.edu/wolfcollection/songs/fendleybattle1302.html

I wrote this song around 2006 when I was in the band The Dad of Rock. I happened to be flipping through the channels on the TV in the band practice space and stumbled upon Ernest Angley's show on WBNX and heard him utter the phrase "Jesus loves you, richer, fuller, deeper, sweeter!" I scrambled to get a recording device set up in case he said it again. It never happened but he always has a way of speaking in an overtly sexual manner when referring to God or Jesus. So with the phrase memorized, I recorded a few other clips of Ernest (heard as a brief intro and the song outro) and set to work writing lyrics and a guitar riff. The song never made it out of 8-Track demo stage, but here it is. Those of you familiar with Ernest will understand some of the references: "Richer, Fuller, Deeper, Sweeter" by Kenny Pick & The Dad of Rock The 90 and 9 Club Has Finished the Buffet They're so special to God In a very special way, yeah CHORUS Richer, Fuller, Deeper, Sweeter Richer, Fuller Richer, Fuller, Deeper, Sweeter Richer, Fuller, Deeper, Sweeter X2 Now Rex's Erection Is impotent in the sun Cuyahoga Falls It falls on Everyone CHORUS Now here come the singers They're stuffed like cabbage rolls You know the fun is over Before the credits roll CHORUS X4 So I've always know there was something deeply disturbing about Angley Ministries, but I never thought it would be as atrocious and cult like. Please follow Bob Dyer's excellent reporting on the depth of Angley's abuse and corruption in the Akron Beacon Journal.
