When THE GREAT MUTA hit the scene in 1989, American audiences were immediately captivated and awe-struck by a signature style that forever changed everything they thought they knew about professional wrestling. A marriage of violence with grace, acrobatics with technical proficiency, flamboyance with nobility, Muta enriched WCW's already momentous main event scene while bringing increased exposure to pro wrestling on an international scale for a new generation of fans. Although never a regular for any especially long stays in World Championship Wrestling, Muta's influence is undeniable, as exemplified through our three representative matches. Along the way, our discussion leads us to some of the following musings: -Muta and Sting as complimentary opponents -The complex science of color-matching one's facepaint to ring gear -WCW's evil J-Tex Corporation, a xenophobic heel faction cooler than most -Great American Bash 1989: more like Just Okayest American Bash -The managerial... talents? of Gary Hart -A hidden gem of a TV match none of us knew existed going in (*TRIGGER WARNING* Tim cuts a promo around this topic, although directed at no one in particular) -Muta's prospects as a potential babyface post-1989 in WCW -WCW's commitment to giving international talent a spotlight -A seemingly random under-the-radar 1992 match that two hosts nearly picked -Woke Ally SJW Cowboy Bill Watts -Muta's badass reinvention as a member of nWo Japan -A suplex feast for the ages Blazing a trail for future enigmatic, colorful superstars of wrestling and innovating flashy, impactful offense still in popular use today (such as the moonsault, dragonscrew legwhip, Shining Wizard, and Muta Lock), the man born as Keiji Muto is secure in his legendary status. Having announced his intention to retire after a globe-trotting career spanning five decades, it is only fitting that we pay tribute to one of wrestling's finest contributors. May the sun never set on this titan from the Land of the Rising Sun!

Eric Bischoff was sent home from WCW around August of 1999, leaving the ship without a definitive captain. Vince Russo showed up in WCW in October of 1999, right before Halloween Havoc, and was gone by January of 2000, right before Souled Out. It's now April and both Bischoff and Russo were brought back by WCW management to work together after the previous regime just wasn't cutting the mustard. What's the brilliant plan here? They're basically resetting the company, starting fresh with storylines and such, stripping all champions of their titles, and holding tournaments to crown new champions. It seemed like a dumb idea at the time and it turned out to be a dumb idea in execution. We go back to 1987 with some pretty memorable events. First of all, Magnum T.A. makes his first public appearance since his horrible accident in the fall of 1986. Secondly, we will see highlights from the Crockett Cup tournament in Baltimore won by Dusty Rhodes and Nikita Koloff, and, finally, we will see the debut of the New Breed: Chris Champion and Sean Royal. Two young men who were ahead of their time and, had it not been for a car crash, would have probably become top stars. Additionally, we will see in action, Ron Garvin (as he beats up another poor soul), Brad Armstrong, Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin, the Barbarian, Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin, the Midnight Express with Jim Cornette and the Road Warriors. Slow Pitch

Sean and Brad are joined by a true Southern Gentleman (that might be his wrestling name), their good friend Keith Dismuke.  Keith was technically our first guest considering this was recorded almost a year ago.  Keith is also ridiculous, but in a hilarious way.  We talk about the Montreal screw-job, poop trucks, and, par for the course, farting nuns.  This is not the classiest of films.  Brad is wearing a fanny pack, Sean is wearing Goldberg-esque briefs, and Keith is wearing a one-strap singlet with the strap pulled down like he means business now.  Get ready to rumble with this tag team of heels. Also we apologize for the amount of sophomoric terms used for the male groin-ular area.Next episode is 1937's Kid Galahad, which is not being streamed for free anywhere so borrow it from your local library.Support the show

Professional Wrestling has a rich history in the South, a history that arguably reaches its apogee in the last 25 years of the 20th century. During that time, many of the major wrestling 'territories' of the region came together to form Atlanta-based World Championship Wrestling; throughout the 1980s and 90s, WCW functioned as the #2 wrestling promotion worldwide. Further, with the post-Jim Crow landscape of the South leading to integration of both performers and audiences and WCW's introduction of Mexican-style lucha libre wrestling into the American context, Southern wrasslin' emerged in the 1980s and 90s as a way to tell the story of a changing South to the nation and the world. How was this story told? How do we still hear some of this story echoed in today's World Wrestling Entertainment? Can the WWE still tell distinctively Southern stories? Andre E. Key and Robert Greene, II of Claflin University and Miles Smith, IV of Hillsdale College join the show to discuss. Transcript
