Andrew is a current 2L at Ohio Northern University College of Law. Andrew's journey is far from linear, going down multiple avenues before finally entering the doors of Law School. Andrew and I started years before he stepped into a Law School classroom. He would graduate from Malone University and begin to pursue working in Public policy and government. He held a plethora of internships and jobs but also hit some roadblocks along the way. Andrew would miss out on a fellowship and not get two positions, but he constantly sent follow-ups and thank you's to those missed opportunities, which would lead to more opportunities for him. After having to start from scratch, and begin to bounce from Odd Job to odd job, Andrew finally decided it was time to head off to Law School. And indeed he did, landing himself at Ohio Northern University Claude Pettit College of Law. Throughout the entire conversation, Andrew spoke heavily about how faith played a role in his life, through all the ups and downs, as well as throughout Law School thus far. Finally, Andrew and I spoke about his first year, which was challenging, with an environment of survival and advancement. After years of not being in school, it was a huge adjustment to the school environment. Andrew would pick up a ton of newfound techniques that would propel him to Law School success, such as using a whiteboard for studying, recording himself on the topics for that end of the semester's test, and even using one of our sponsors, Lisa Blassers Pre-recorded course (lisablasser.com, Code LSOSNATE10 at checkout) to supplement his Law School Experience. Andrew's Journey represents the tagline of this podcast: there is no straight path to the Law or Law School, only your unique journey. Andrew's is one of the most unique I have come across. At just 27 years old, Austin Szemacs crossed one major item off his bucket list. The Streetsboro graduate was recently named baseball coach at Bryant & Stratton College in Solon. Szemacs is quick to dole out credit for his quick rise, including to longtime Rockets baseball coach Chris Scisciani, who he said helped inspire him to become a coach. Szemacs also notes how Jake Plata, his predecessor at Bryant & Stratton, and Ben Simon helped push his coaching career along since he graduated from Malone University. “Playing for Coach Scisciani was the big start for me wanting to pursue this after high school and after college,” Szemacs said. “Then between Jake and Ben, my career has taken off because of those people, and I give a lot of credit to them and the selflessness that they had. They didn't have to do what they did. and all that kind of stuff just is the reason my career is kind of taking off the way it has.” --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/baseballbluebook/support

Sgt. Ednah Kurgat tells how it all went down at the recent USATF 6km National Championships in Canton, OH, July 15. Krugat runs as a member of the US Army's WCAP (World Class Athlete Program) and has primarily focused on cross-country and distance track racing, with a particular focus on the 10,000-meter. In January 2023, she won the USATF Cross-Country National Championships; this earned Kurgat her first spot on an international team, representing the US at the Cross Country World Championships that took place in February in Australia. Kurgat is relatively new to road racing, having only started last year, but she's clearly learning quickly. Listen to hear how, despite a busy race calendar coming into the 6k Championships, Krugat ran a smart, decisive race. A special note of thanks here to race founder and director Tina Oprean Ryee, who is also the director of Cross-Country and Track and Field at Malone University. This is the only women's-only event on the Grand Prix Circuit (the men have a corresponding 8km race in Tennessee), and Krugat was mindful of how the energy felt different at this race and it felt empowering. The USATF 6km National Championships is a part of the championship series of races that happen throughout the year, beginning with the Cross-Country National Championships. Racers earn points based on finishing places that go toward the overall series placing. Kurgat is current in second place overall, behind Nell Rojas. You can catch up on earlier road races in the series through our Race Reports. Each report features one runner's perspective on how it all went down. Stay tuned for the next race in the series, happening this weekend, Saturday, July 29: the USATF 7-mile National Championships in Davenport, IA. Welcome to episode ninety of New Creation Conversations. My conversation today is with a great friend and colleague in pastoral ministry, Dr. Sam Barber. Sam is currently serving as the District Superintendent of the South-Central Ohio District for the Church of the Nazarene. Sam is a graduate of Mount Vernon Nazarene University, he has a master's degree in Christian Ministry and Church Leadership from Malone University, another master's in theology from Duke Divinity School, and he earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Nazarene Theological Seminary. He has also been the lead pastor at churches in Troy and Columbus, Ohio as well as at the Kansas City Central Church. He and his wife Jill have become dear friends of Debbie and me over the last several years, and I deeply respect Sam's heart, mind, and leadership ability. Our conversation centers around his recently released book, A People of Grace: Becoming Disciples Together (published by The Foundry Press). In the book, Sam explores the exciting adventure of discipleship – following Jesus. However, he argues that discipleship is never something we do alone, it takes a team effort to help each other grow in holiness and reach out to others. In the book, Sam invites readers to participate together in an innovative approach to discipleship that has its roots in the ministry of John Wesley. It's a very helpful book and a rich conversation. So, thanks for sitting in on this conversation between two old friends.

Two major fusion initiatives are making headway in the decades long goal to find the ultimate source of clean energy. In this episode of Grid Talk, we visit with Laban Coblentz who is the head of communications at the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project in the south of France.Coblentz described the long quest for fusion and its implications. “Fusion has the potential to give a baseload source of energy without only a fraction of the waste concerns of fission, without the safety concerns of fission, but with the ability to provide clean energy for a planet in a concentrated way.” It will be safe and should not trigger many of the concerns of conventional nuclear reactors that have been around for decades.“Fusion will not be without waste, but it won't have any long-lived, high activity radioactive waste.” “The fact that the physics don't allow a meltdown or that kind of thing; you could in fact place it in greater proximity to cities, to industry if you get the local—if you get the regulatory authorities to agree.”The European Union and the United States are two of the seven key, international players in ITER.“ITER is not just a fusion device, it's an exercise in what happens when the global community believes so much in a common goal and in a better future for our kids that we are willing to put aside our known ideological differences to try to pool our best expertise, something that science has done for a longtime.” Laban Coblentz has been with ITER since 2015. He is an entrepreneur and consultant with leadership roles at several companies. He has been involved with communication, energy policy, advanced science and technology, and entrepreneurship since attending the U.S. Navy Nuclear Power School in the 1980's.He holds an M.A. in English, English Literature from San Francisco State University and a B.A. in degree in English, Psychology from Malone University.
