What is the concept of willpower? How can willpower be developed and strengthened? What are some common challenges to maintaining willpower? How can setting clear goals help strengthen willpower?Welcome to Stoic Spirituality, where I break down relevant concepts from books and abstract concepts I have thought about as well!People like to think that willpower is a strength-based power, but it is rather humility and resistance. We'll be discussing the concept of willpower and how it can be developed and strengthened. We'll explore the challenges that come with maintaining willpower and the benefits of setting clear goals to help boost your willpower. Also, we'll talk about strategies for staying motivated and committed to your goals, even in the face of obstacles and setbacks.Book: The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday - Part 3: WillA lot of Ryan Holiday's content is based on the idea of Stoicism, which an ancient Greek school of philosophy, and some points behind it were that virtue, the highest good, is based on knowledge; the wise live in harmony with the divine Reason that governs nature. One common definition you might have heard of is that stoics are indifferent to the vicissitudes of fortune and to pleasure and pain.Hope you enjoy and if you like my content, drop me a follow and find me on Instagram @stoicspirituality and Tiktok @stoicspirituality,I am also on Youtube @stoicspiritualityFind my other podcast episodes and platforms here: https://rss.com/podcasts/rebooking-to-mastery/I am also a life coach, so if you would like to schedule a free sample session to see if we can create something great together, feel free to schedule a sample session here: https://calendly.com/stoicspiritualitylifecoaching/sample-session?month=2023-03

Alan and Abbey kick off the episode talking about the problems in podcasting. Abbey is joining as our first guest to talk with Alan about 75Hard - the mental toughness challenge. Abbey is a podcast junkie and has always wanted to be on one, the hunter and the hippie making dreams come true. Alan and Abbey talk about being a talk show host and how being on a podcast is way better. Abbey suggested to Alan to do a podcast talking about their own views and perspectives of the challenge. Alan leads everyone through breathwork and the message is to be mindful in the moment, at least one full breath. 75Hard is not a diet, it is a mental toughness challenge consisting of five tasks. Two 45-Minute Workouts (one must be outdoors), follow a diet, one gallon of water, read 10 pages of a non-fiction book, Tackle a progress pic, and no alcohol or cheat meals. Abbey and Alan share the story of how this challenge got put in motion, They started the day after they talked about it on Sept 13th. The key is DON'T overthink any of it. Most of Alan's outdoor workouts was walking his dog and Abbey often took her kid's on a bike ride and to the play ground. Everyone has a full plate - we are not special! If you fail one thing, even the simple thing, like take a progress picture, you start back at the beginning from Day 1. Abbey did fail her first attempt at 75Hard because she was really sick and could not drink water. Alan was able to pass his first attempt and 75Hard and went into Phase 1 of the LiveHard Program which is discussed briefly. Abbey is really proud she quit drinking and has noticed dramatic changes in her sleep patterns from her Oura Ring. Rest is not one of the critical tasks but is still so important in life. Abbey says these tasks are the foundational tasks. This is the solid foundation you build your life on - she still has to take care of her kids. JOURNAL PROMPT: Write out your thoughts about 75Hard and what excuses are stopping you from making a life altering decision to become the best you possible. We don't get to decide when things happen in our lives, like obstacles. We do get to choose what we do with those obstacles and what we make out of them. Perhaps these obstacles are the path to what you really want. Click here to download or listen to this episode now. In 1996, for the first and only time in my entire life – I was fired from a job. I had been recruited by Citadel Broadcasting to move to Salt Lake City and do the morning show. I moved my little family from Knoxville TN to Utah. We fell in love with Utah and her people.  And then, three months after I started, I was fired. All I could think, as I looked at my wife’s tear-stained face, was, “What have I done?” Book – The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday The Obstacle is not IN your way. – the obstacle IS the way. 5 Ways The Obstacle AS the Way Changes You Takes you from a catastrophe thinker to a possibility thinker. Removes mental blocks to creative solutions. Encourages faith in the future to arise. Elevates your mood and decreases cortisol levels. Allows you access to your best internal resources – and most importantly your internal resourcefulness. Questions to Ask When You Encounter What May LOOK Like An Obstacle If I believed the obstacle was actually the path to what I seek, how would I behave? What would I be thinking? What would I be doing? What does this make possible? What does this mean? What might be the long-range benefits of this? What can I learn from this? How can I use this? This episode picks up the Emotion at Work in Stories theme I shared at the start of 2018. This time with Amy King (@Amy_C_King) as my guest, we take a trip into how burnout has been a part of her life in recent years. We explore the knowing and not knowing that you are becoming burned out, how loving what she does has contributed towards Amy's burnout experience and how she now approaches life (or does her best to do so) in a way that will prevent it from happening again.    As well as exploring the practical, tangible and everyday things Amy has done and continues to do, we get into how psychology, sociology and wider aspects of burnout. With this being a Stories episode there aren’t many references as such.   Brendan Riding’s passion is to teach people how to easily reverse chronic pain and correct their posture using simple biomechanics and exercise. Through is passion, he invented a back support device called Posture PT. This back support can be attached to any chair (office, home, or car), helping to maintain proper spinal posture, and therefore maximize overall function of the body. Brendan has a wildly high success rate when working with potential surgery candidates. In fact, he’s helps 19 out of every 20 people avoid surgery through the lifestyle changes he recommends, including posture, dietary changes, exercises, stretches, and meditation. He makes a really important point: it’s not inevitable that you will age and deteriorate, needing medications and/or surgery. Surgery makes a lot of money. Proactive measures do not. So answers go in that direction. Through talking with Brendan, I found out that poor posture (sitting in particular) has a stronger correlation to lowered life expectancy than smoking! I’ve written about proper posture while using technology before, but this new information is staggering. During our interview, he dives in to just how detrimental our sedentary lifestyle is to our health as a whole, causing hormone irregularities and structural aches and pains, all while aging us prematurely. Ridings uses a great analogy about a car and how we must fundamentally fix the alignment of our body so we don’t wear down. In addition to the lack of motion in our lives, our diets also play a significant role in aging our bodies by increasing inflammation and therefore the risk of illnesses like diabetes, cancer and heart disease. These “big killers” are rampant in our society, making the simple strategies that Brendan suggests in this podcast almost brainless. Furthermore, he utilizes a meditation technique called Shambhavi Meditation, which he claims activates 20% of your brain, as opposed to the average 10%. Meditation, along with exercise, is one of the actions that stimulates the “feel good” neurochemical dopamine, while opening the receptors it acts upon. Besides being naturally more joyful, it helps those practicing this meditation to be less reactive to situations around them. This is a important, because keeping emotions in check allow you to make appropriate (business) decisions. In this episode, Brendan and I discuss: How our food choices affect our bodies and our brains Three simple steps to shopping for and choosing better foods Food sensitivities and how to identify them through lab testing Why sitting has more of an affect on our mortality than smoking How sitting changes our biomechanics, hormones, breathing, and more The ultimate secrets to aging gracefully The appropriate way to sit at your desk and support proper structure: 5 Ways to Protect Your Spine at Your Desk Brendan’s Posture Support Tool, PosturePT: confidentposture.com Brendan’s new podcast: preventativepodcast.com Book: The Obstacle is the Way, by Ryan Holiday Text Neck: Your Phone is Destroying Your Posture Daily Posture Exercises Shambhavi Meditation, the 21 minute meditation that activates 20% of the brain as opposed to the average 10%. How reducing your reactivity to situations around you frees you from others control, allowing you to make more solid decisions. Gaining control of your emotions helps you to avoid the “entrepreneurial rollercoaster” To contact Brendan for a Skype or in-person appointment: Brendan@curvgroup.com
