The conversation for this episode was sparked by the Joe Rogan controversy of Spotify being pushed to remove him from their platform for misinformation. Alan and Bre talk about the importance of having access to all information and also all opinions in order to formulate your own. Alan and Bre use examples of the pandemic- vaccines, masks- as a way to exemplify the labels and categories people are placed into and then ultimately defined as being a "certain kind of person" from other people. Beliefs are not mutually exclusive of being a good human or a jerk. Disagreement does not mean hate. It is hard to find the balance of where to speak up about something and when to stay quiet. Just be a good human! Because the power of the mirror effect… you will get good humans back. Journal Prompt: Write about the mirror effect. What are you putting out that you are getting back? Bre goes into depth about Yoga Therapy and the people she will be helping with it. As we have discussed before the breath, in sanskrit - Pranayama which roughly translates to life force or life energy. Bre talks about how this breath work has helped her release trauma. While talking about some of the trauma released and pain she was able to rid, she refers to the erector spinae (muscles that run down the outsides of the spine) as “backstraps”. She is a true hunter! Bre shares with us that she has experienced sexual assault. This is not easy to talk about and we thank Bre for being vulnerable and sharing. Bre is courageous for sharing her story for everyone to hear. After Bre shares her trauma, Alan and Bre talk about the Yoga Alliance and the different yoga certifications you can receive through them. JOURNAL PROMPT: write about your thoughts on the episode and the experiences Bre shared. Write about your experiences and traumas. For or Against Boundaries?

This is a very contemplative episode. Alan starts off the episode sharing thoughts about stillness. Bre talks about what arises when she slows down and then being able to move with the flow of life. Alan discusses the power of habit and how that can also help add to creation- ideas, writing, etc. They dive right into boundaries. Bre asks Alan what boundaries mean to him and why does he have to set boundaries? Boundaries aren't static. Like a tree: roots are important but being able to move with the wind is important. Bre has been questioning the idea of boundaries or perhaps just has a new perspective on it. Boundaries are based on the external versus honoring your true or highest self. They dive into the idea of giving. Everything from giving just to give and not giving to receive. When you give too much that can drain your cup. Reciprocation is important- Alan points out that nobody is self made AND nobody is coming to save you. Bre challenges the idea saying that when you give with expectations is when your cup gets drained instead of just when you give to give. Touching on self care or filling your own cup and how often people find excuses to tend to others; Alan expands on the idea of martyrdom in those excuses of putting self behind others. So much of this comes from unconscious patterning that was formed as a young child. At some point we forget our worthiness or wholeness and then we seek to fill that outside of ourselves. They are saying similar perspectives but it comes down to linguistics. Bre feels boundaries create a false sense of control and then when they are broken, we beat ourselves up about it instead of just flowing with what is. Try on different ideas of boundaries to see what feels right to you. Alan loves the little messages in Pixar movies. He references Monsters- they shift from scaring children to get energy to power their world to making them laugh and realize that laughter is more powerful! He talks about how we put up walls out of fear. Walls don't let fear and pain but also doesn't allow the joy, love, either. He emphasizes the importance of being open. You can't have the past determine your future. They both talk about the heart center and keeping your heart open! Unconditional love... yes, that means, no conditions, just straight love for yourself and others. Alan shares the quote: JOURNAL PROMPT: Maybe today is not a journal… it's reaching out to a friend you haven't talked to, a thought, something you can share with your spouse. Abbey is a podcast junkie and has always wanted to be on one, the hunter and the hippie making dreams come true. Alan and Abbey talk about being a talk show host and how being on a podcast is way better. Abbey suggested to Alan to do a podcast talking about their own views and perspectives of the challenge. Alan leads everyone through breathwork and the message is to be mindful in the moment, at least one full breath. 75Hard is not a diet, it is a mental toughness challenge consisting of five tasks. Two 45-Minute Workouts (one must be outdoors), follow a diet, one gallon of water, read 10 pages of a non-fiction book, Tackle a progress pic, and no alcohol or cheat meals. Abbey and Alan share the story of how this challenge got put in motion, They started the day after they talked about it on Sept 13th. The key is DON'T overthink any of it. Most of Alan's outdoor workouts was walking his dog and Abbey often took her kid's on a bike ride and to the play ground. Everyone has a full plate - we are not special! If you fail one thing, even the simple thing, like take a progress picture, you start back at the beginning from Day 1. Abbey did fail her first attempt at 75Hard because she was really sick and could not drink water. Alan was able to pass his first attempt and 75Hard and went into Phase 1 of the LiveHard Program which is discussed briefly. Abbey is really proud she quit drinking and has noticed dramatic changes in her sleep patterns from her Oura Ring. Rest is not one of the critical tasks but is still so important in life. Abbey says these tasks are the foundational tasks. This is the solid foundation you build your life on - she still has to take care of her kids. The biggest take away is that we all need to take care of each other and the community- bottom up approach. They catch up briefly on Thanksgiving. Alan had a smaller than usual Thanksgiving. Bre has been helping with puppy training and it's cool to see the quick learning at that age. Any stress? Bre is focusing on how to maintain grounding, she is feeling more grounded now than earlier in the fall. Bre guides us through breathwork. Holidays are here. Holidays can be stressful. Bre asks Alan why he hasn't felt much stress for the holidays so far. He shares… you'll have to listen. Bre shares a couple tools she uses to keep her sanity and to reset when the external is affecting her mood. [minute 40] They dive into discipline and life is hard- “choose your hard.” Most often easy at the beginning means harder later and more sustaining; whereas what feels difficult at the beginning becomes easier or is more serving later and in the long run. Alan references 75 hard [look forward to hearing more about it in the next episode] and how your surroundings, family, friends can make discipline more challenging. The conversation moves into path of least resistance vs paving your own trail and how that also relates to creating new neural pathways which is initially “off trail” and much tougher, but eventually there's a new trail. Overall discipline builds momentum and both the mental and physical discipline feed off each other. Alan shares about his 3 day rule with traveling and when he breaks it, he is consciously signing up for it and also setting himself up for success by preparing ahead of time. Since the holidays can be crazy busy, Bre recommends to pick one thing in December to stay disciplined about and it can be small- slightly challenging but not out of reach. Alan and Bre briefly chat about them doing the podcast for a year. Feel free to reach out to tell us what you favorite episode was and if there are any additional topics you would like us to talk about. Bre kicks off the episode with a great, mindfulness meditation. Alan opens with some insight about enlightenment from a book he was listening to called No Mud No Lotus by Thich Nhat Hanh and Bre shares that enlightenment is not above or beyond humanity. Conscious consumption is something we are always mindful of and something we talk about a lot. Bre talks more about this and the difference of being alone in the silence of the wilderness and in the “big” city. Bre and Alan switch topics to chat a bit about how prepared we actually are if there were a cyber pandemic and they briefly discuss the deep freeze in Texas. We have outsourced a lot of our ability to think and brainpower. We used to use encyclopedias and atlas to provide us reference material. As a hunter, and anyone who spend a good amount of time outdoors, you start to realize the things that you actually need, not want. And that is when life starts to get simple, not easy. It is important to recognize the difference between needs and wants - know the difference and don't let the wants control your life. Bre and Alan share some winter camping stories in three season tents and how these kind of hardships make you resilient and realize the hardest part is taking the first step. Alan shares his first hunting story with his buddy Jeff and how you don't really know a person until they are shitting next to you in the woods. All of this shows you the importance of others and how we can not do this alone. Journal Prompt: Write about the things you heard - Where does your meat come from? How does education impact your life? Why is your education better? How do people help you and how do you help them? First, apologies on sound quality for this episode... we will get it cleaned up for next release! Alan is excited to catch up on Bre's first hunting season. Bre guides us through breathwork and then they dive into it. The various life lessons from hunting... hard work and that you can always do more but also acknowledging all you have done... nothing's guaranteed... luck can play a bigger role than skill... seeing how important intention is and sticking to it [or if you don't, what happens!]... observing human nature when there's a possibility for "more"... appreciating the small things along the journey... make a decision, act on it, & be ok with it... being proud... a picture doesn't capture the whole story... Alan starts with a disclaimer because we talk about some heavy topics. We are speaking from our experiences and our opinions and respect that others have different feelings about what we are talking about. We encourage you to journal about what comes up and not allow it to fester or build. Bre opens the episode with some breathing and mindfulness. Alan picks right up from part one of Firearms and Freedom. He starts talking about the lack of freedom in Australia. The second amendment is second for a reason. When we start losing our first amendment, the second amendment kicks in. The constitution doesn't allow us to do anything. It simply protects the rights. All we want is FREEDOM! The answer is ALWAYS freedom. We don't get to pick and choose which freedoms we want - and just because you don't like it, doesnt mean others shouldn't have it. Divisiveness is a distraction from the corruption in politics. Bre talks about a book she is reading called The Fourth Turning. Bre and Alan talk about the hypocrisy in politics and how the government is turning us against each other. Alan and Bre talk about COVID-19. Alan talks about being in the military and how every veteran for has fought for ALL freedoms. No government is perfect, we have done an amazing job. Alan shares his opinion - we don't have real problems so we make up shit. Alan brings up Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Bre talks about her mom escaping communism in Budapest. The goal is disarm citizens - and they can't fight back. Alan talks about being raised Jewish and how you are told to hide who you are. BE WHO THE FUCK YOU ARE! We are attempting to take away basic human rights - we need to stand up and stand by eachother. Bre and Alan talk about history and the importance of WE THE PEOPLE. Words are EVERYTHING! Bre makes a great point about getting to the root of the problem instead of only treating the symptoms. Since when did we become a “trust” our government crowd. Journal Prompt: Write about the things you heard - where do you stand? Do you agree? Do you disagree? Reach out for a convo. Why are you scared of guns? The second amendment. She gets to shoot some other firearms that her friends brought. Alan suggests doing some dryfire at home to get comfortable with your trigger break so you can learn to expect the “surprise.” They talk breath and pulling the trigger is important. Alan shares that his wife shoots all of his guns, so she knows what to expect if she ever needs to use them. Hunting with firearms is a privilege, owning a firearm to defend your home is a right. We suggest that, even if you don't want to shoot or own firearms, learn about them… don't just demonize something you know nothing about. It is also important to know your firearms to determine what is appropriate for your needs, as in protecting your home. Alan emphasizes function and efficiency, not what's cool and sexy. It is suicide awareness month, please reach out if you need support, we need you in this world, you impact the world. The conversation shifts into fear of death and how the pandemic has heightened this fear and also inhibited the quality of life. We all don't realize the impact we actually have and the importance of human connection and we are losing that in the lockdowns and all of the mandates. We are not meant to experience life alone. Alan plans to live his life and plans to be connected with his loved ones. Bre makes a great point - we forgot the human in all of this life. We have lost humanity in labels. Anonymity relieves people of personal responsibility. Is some of that happening with the masks? Can no longer see the human behind the mask or non mask. We all want the same things but see it differently! The media is the tool that the politicians use to divide us and turn us against each other. In the end we all just want love. Alan talks about the simplistic format of being a yoga teacher and the focus on the breath. Bre mentions that yoga is about bringing your awareness to your breath and being able to see how every emotion impacts it. They start talking about word choice - Alan believes the biggest lie we tell ourselves is “can't”. We have to change “I can't” to “I won't”. This makes it so much more personal. Bre talks about “I won't” is much more empowering and you can no longer blame outside circumstances. I won't is ok if the thing you won't do isn't in line with the direction in your life. I can't is based on past experiences, it is a conditioned response. Bre talks about the impact of the word “but” and how it negates everything you said before the but. But degrades the experience and you don't get to own how badass you are. But sets up the lack of accountability for failure. Own your actions or lack thereof. You are whole and complete. Your word choice is all part of your training and the work you are willing to do, then when you are in the moment you will be aware of your word choice. Your word choice feeds your energy - if you keep telling yourself you are tired, do you think you are going to feel not tired? Limitations change - we don't know our limit until we are past it. They laugh about the difference between antelope hunting & elk hunting. Elk is tough. Bre takes us through breathing. Creativity is the theme today & Bre shares how it is perfect timing because she feels her creativity practices have fallen off the last couple months. Creativity is a muscle that needs to be used & can come back if it's been lost. She shares how it is also a therapeutic tool for her to process, express, & get away from toxicity. It shines most for her in nature & “quiet.” Alan says creativity for him is not art. He also discusses choices & there are sacrifices within these choices. If you're not practicing your creative outlet, it's because you are giving your time to something else. Another hindrance is the fear of failure or trying to look good. Alan utilizes creativity in business & that's what separates him from the bunch. We get stuck fitting a mold instead of breaking out of the box. Bre dives into her concern with children & potential loss of creativity because they are always intaking stimulus & content instead with screens, also how this will affect innovation in the future when creativity isn't being cultivated. Alan brings up the iPhone, how Apple went in a different direction than the masses, willingness to be different. Alan's theme is #actlikeachild, we need to stop adulting all the time & play. Bre is much more weary about screens than Alan but both believe in regulating screen time for kiddos. Also, sometimes we need boredom to activate creativity as kids & adults. The conversation moves into sameness while also getting “yogi” saying that the same poses are never the same because it's the first time you are doing it in that moment; how can you cultivate curiosity & newness in the old. Alan talks about how activity helps with creativity & Bre debates that it's not the activity, it's that when you are hiking, running, etc you no longer have all this outside intake, so your “genius ideas” have a clear space to show up in without distractions [work, kids, etc] to pull you away from it. Alan talks about how we've lost nature & play, instead we are stuck in the materialistic realm, work work work, just to make money. They transition into talking about money as a driver does not typically result in “success.” You have far more success when you are passionate about something, solving a problem, etc. Do something worthwhile & the rest will follow. Instagram sexy photos somehow come up… which ultimately they both emphasize don't be deeply identified to these images of yourself, the likes, the money, the external induced “happiness.” Alan discusses social media's massive negative impact of teenage girls- between mental health, increase of suicide, body image issues, etc. and suggests to read “Coddling of the American Mind” by Jonathon Haidt. Journal Prompt: You can write about how you feel about the ending note of women & body image challenges. Also use this time for your CREATIVITY. Alan being out of the dating scene for many years is curious what it's like now, so Bre shares her different experiences now living in a smaller town & most recently trying Bumble. Alan met his wife through work & shares that they were friends before moving into the romantic space. Jessica is a strong, bold woman & made some not so subtle hints. They discuss the challenge for males in the modern era with approaching a female & not overstepping & honoring boundaries. The female wingwoman is a solid move! They coin the term Mansumption. How do y'all feel about The Hunter & The Hippie dating service? Alan shares the idea of interdependence. Each individual having his or her own goals & family goal & then supporting each other; getting there separately together. Bre takes us through our breathwork for the day. Alan observes his breath as he was thinking about relationships. Breath patterns are directly related to emotions. You can feel relaxed & “negative” emotions. Alan discusses how we have freedom to action in the United States which is awesome but we have become so action oriented that we have forgotten to just be with whatever is there. Embrace the tears & also take time to embrace the happiness. They pick apart this idea of seasons of relationships. Being 100% in but showing up looks different throughout these seasons. The conversation moves into commitment & what that looks like. Time is the only real test of someone's commitment through the hard times. Our partnerships are a mirror for our own self. Take the time to reflect on yourself when you're triggered in a relationship. How can we reset & have a fresh perspective in every relationship, every moment… that's the Yoga. They breakdown the idea of “The Spark.” Alan talks about lust [even if it's intellectual] versus a more sustainable connection, love. When the relationship gets ugly, what do you have to fall back on? Relationships- romantic or friendships- take work. Relationships take work to create what you want and need from your partner. There are a lot of factors that go into creating “the spark” with someone. It is important to continue fuel the fire - “WOOD” is a good fuel. Creating a good relationship requires 100% accountability. Poor behavior in a relationship is inexcusable, but it is your choice on how you respond to create your future relationships. Bre brings up the book “The 5 Love Languages” by Gary Chapman. Alan and Bre talk a bit about this and how important it is to understand how people show love and give love. What you seek is seeking you.You must work on loving yourself and understand that what you are thinking about yourself and what you see in others is what is going to come back to you. It is important for you to grow, and it is important for the people in your relationships to see growth as well, this can change friendships. Alan talks about not being yourself and how unhealthy it is for us having to switch between characters in our story. Bre makes a great point about relationships ending - no one is right or wrong. Are the people in your circle “your biggest fans”?! Be protective of your energy and your time. You should ask yourself if you should be in the relationships you are in. Ask yourself, “Is this relationship serving me?” You must show up for yourself first - your cup must be full in order to give to others. Part of doing the work is making sure you are communicating. Say the thing! Make it be known how you feel! How you are in your relationships helps you create and cultivate who your friends are and how all of you grow together. Alan and Bre go back to the 5 love languages and discuss their own love language. Journal Prompt! So much ancient medicine is disregarded as hocus pocus, but it's been around much longer than western medicine, so there must be something to it. Both agree a balance of ancient, traditional, eastern medicine & western medicine is the way. This is why Alan tries to make Yoga accessible because you lose people with the “hippie” & he tries to show people that it exists, experience leads to questions. Bre talks about she's gone off the deep end, not holding back the dharma yogi talks & has been surprised by the response. Yoga teachers who do not bring philosophy into the practice are doing it a disservice, it is more than a fitness workout. Alan emphasizes whatever gets people in the door is most important. They both try to bring the human-ness to yoga & vice versa. The conversation evolves into polarities, duality, conflict, the culture of us & them that exists right now creating so much separation & hatred. Politics sneak their way in because of the idea of divisiveness & separation. Also the pandemic has been surprising because there is not a clear line of who falls on which side, however there is still this us & them, for or anti mentality. Little vax talk. All of our decisions come from personal experience. Overall there needs to be less shaming & judging. Alan reiterates that bias will always exist, so let's talk about it & more importantly LISTEN! It feels like it's diverging from yoga but that is the yoga, coming back to oneness, union, impersonal polarities is nature. The mind brings us out of the moment, yoga brings you back to breath & sensation which is the only moment we experience, the present moment. This gives us freedom. Alan talks about big T Truth & little t truth. They break down are humans inherently good or inherently evil/ bad?! How you see the world is will be true to you, you have the power of choice. Journal prompt: What is your big T Truth? Are they actually small t truths? Think of a person who in the past you disagreed with, can you write about a way that you do connect with them. Triggers that came up & what was the sensation with it, without the story. Self Care

Alan and Bre open the show by talking about being “busy” and that “busy” is bullshit. You make time for the things you want to prioritize in your life. Our goal is to not be busy. Bre shares her recent experience in her hunter ed class. This led us down the rabbit hole of guns, gun education and children being around guns. GUNS ARE NEVER TOYS! Bre leads us through our mindfulness breath, then we begin to talk about self care. We stop taking care of ourselves when we become busy because we don't prioritize our self care. We must ask ourselves, “How are we performing?” when we are not taking care of ourselves. Taking care of yourself is simple, but not easy, it requires discipline. Self care is a non-negotiable. In order to be selfless you must be selfish. Alan shares his “Back to the Beach” Challenge and this conversation goes on for a bit as Bre and Alan hammer home the point of being consistent. Consistency isn't sexy, but having a beach body is, Alan makes the point that when you look good you feel good. Bre makes a great point that self care starts at the grocery store. You must make time for yourself to workout. Especially if you are a parent, Alan talks about his friends with two kids that still make time for workouts. All you need is 55 minutes to join in the Back to the Beach Challenge. 55 minutes in a 24 hour day, break down your day in three 8-hour increments. Then ask yourself how much time are you spending on social media and netflix. You have a favorite app, but you don't have a favorite exercise or workout? Bre argues that when you feel good you look good! What are the things that make you feel good? Do those! Eating a tub of ice cream might make you think you are going to feel good, but then you feel like shit. But really it gives you the sugar farts. We want instant gratification, but we need to realize that we need to feel good over extended periods of time. Your self care is going to create ripples which turn into waves in everything that you do. How you do anything is how you do everything. Bre shares her day of drinking with her friends and that she felt like shit the entire next day. It is important to reflect on how you feel when you take care of yourself and how you feel when you don't. Alan brings up “body positivity” to acknowledge that we must stop shaming people on both sides of the spectrum. Set a goal to be healthy and remember that body positivity shouldn't mean complacency. Stop using crutches and excuses for lack of self care. The conversation shifts a bit to Alan's thoughts on what a workout is for him and then they both talk about hour long yoga classes. Bre makes some great points that we have lost mindfulness and now we are doing these workouts or exercises to “Check the box”. Self care leads to a quality of life you can only get from taking care of yourself. Before the journal prompt they talk about the importance of accountability and we must stop taking it personal. Quit blaming outside sources, you are the only one that is responsible for yourself. Work on creating interdependence in your relationships so we can all get better together. Journal prompt: Write about your thoughts from the episode. Use your journal for self care, commit to consistency in using your journal. Write about who you need to take care of yourself for. Just. Fucking. Start. Write about the sensations you have and remember to use this as a tool of reflection. Bre is officially in spring & she shares all of her happenings; stress relief series, retreats in Nepal, Ecuador and Colorado. She talks about being a business owner & some of the economics of planning a retreat. They catch up, Alan talks turkey hunting, then they move into Breath with Bre. Bre and Alan give shoutouts to listeners for providing topics to talk about. Bre's friend, Ajay, asked us to talk about finding our why. Bre shares her journey through corporate America & how all decisions she made were based on her career. Then it was time to re-examine priorities. Bre shares how she was not a fan of constantly being on call, and Alan shared a story about his experience of receiving a work call while on vacation in the Caribbean. They talk about making decisions from a place of choice or empowerment not a “have to.” Alan and Bre discuss the journey of happiness & being able to find happiness when life is tough. Bre mentions polarity, but we need to stop personalizing it. We must trust nature, the tree never tries to be anything other than the tree. Trust the process and know the only moment we have is this one. They talk about why they don't have sponsors & about authenticity. They get back on track & Bre shares how she started making decisions in alignment with what she wants in life. Alan shares a bit of his journey and how he has gotten to his why. Only you can figure out your why. You must go through the discovery process & figure out your individual needs. They talk about working a job & finding happiness in that, & still continuing to work towards your why. EVERY decision you make takes you further or puts you closer to your why. Know that your why isn't necessarily meaning of life, quit making it more than it is, get out there & start doing the damn thing. Alan talks about the importance of creating something & shares the impact Soul Tree Yoga's Meg Stockdale and Marin McCallen had on his life, helping point him towards his why. Bre shares the wisdom that our whys evolve, that's growth. All of this takes a lot of courage, it requires you to look at your fears face to face & make the important decision to keep moving forward. Your feelings aren't reserved just for you. Everyone deals with disappointment & struggles. Alan's why is to make an impact on the world through vulnerability. It is important to understand that if you are living your why & taking action towards your why, disappointments are less likely. When times get tough, this is going to reveal if your why is true. When you are living your why, it's easier to embrace the struggle. Bre shares a quote from Alya Howe, “You are the author of your actions, not your outcomes.” And they both share their thoughts on the saying, “everything happens for a reason.” The only thing stopping you from getting to your why is you. You have to be ok with failing, & your ego getting damaged. They both discuss what “making an impact” actually looks like versus what we believe it should look like. Bre shares her friend's concept of ‘ripples to waves': you might think you're impacting one person, but that person goes out & impacts another person & then they go, etc. Bre's why - seeing the best in others! And someone tries to tell you anything about your why, tell them to kick rocks, no one has the right to tell you what your why is, but they sure will try. Alan and Bre talk about the impact of social media from the last year & instead of perpetuating the divisiveness we must continue to use outlets like this podcast to talk about our commonalities. Again, stop personalizing polarity. Journal prompt: Write about your thoughts from the episode. Write about your why and how you plan to leave the world with your legacy. Alan mentions the Steve Jobs Stanford speech from 2015, write about that. They talk about David Goggins and his book “Can't Hurt Me” and Jesse Itzler's book, “Living with a Seal”. Consistency is key! Bre leads us through an awesome breathing exercise connecting us to the rest of the world. And Alan is excited to be able to breathe out both nostrils for the first time in a couple of days. Bre asks Alan about how he adjusts his fitness routine when he is sick. Right now he is focused on recovery and getting over the crud he has because he is going to Arizona to visit his mother who was in the hospital for three weeks with COVID. She is now home and doing much better. Shout out to Sheryl Titone, a strong 70 year old woman. Alan is also going to AZ for a jiu jitsu camp with the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Globetrotters. Alan is focused on recovery because the Whoop strap is in his head and he is trying to listen to his body telling him to reduce stress. Bre mentions that 80% of doctor visits are stress related. If you want to get better at something you practice and train in that thing, the same is true for sleep. This then turns into a conversation about lack of sleep when bowhunting and bowhunting performance. This leads Bre to talk about why she made the switch to intermittent fasting to help with her endurance performance. Recovery and sleep is important, but how can you train yourself to be a badass, how do you become an outlier? Need to work smart and hard. The best way to get in shape for ice climbing is by ice climbing. Best elk shape is by elk hunting. The conversation continues talking about utilizing fat as fuel, aka keto. Alan shares a story about his friend Ganesh who is keto and his performance hiking Longs Peak. There is a lot of mental training that goes into both training and proper nutrition. Alan and Bre talk about mental training and fight or flight. 60-90 seconds is an automatic response by the sympathetic nervous system, then you have to start making conscious decisions. Alan talks about fight or flight in jiu jitsu, you must have a technical use of training to be able to fight appropriately. Shout out to Professor Howie. Bre shares about mental toughness & managing physiology in trail running. Being able to tap into the mind comes with tapping into the breath first. Bre mentions a technique to help with anxiety attacks to slow down your heart rate. Bre talks about how more people, like Wim Hof, are using ancient knowledge to get more people involved. Find the tools and adjunct therapies you need, know the purpose of these tools and when to use them. Use them to create the life you want. The secret is DO THE WORK. Once you start seeing the benefits you can't quit. You must be into the journey and the process as much as you are into the result. Alan and Bre talk about the importance of balance in all things. Conservation within Hunting

Alan & Bre catch up on Alan attending Tony Robbins' seminar. On the last day there was a huge section pushing a non-meat diet. They discuss pushing agendas, since Tony Robbins is not a nutritionist, that seems irrelevant to the aim & content of the seminar. Then some breaths together to cool off. The reason for talking about hunting in conjunction with conservation is because of Tim Ferris' instagram post that just flashed a sensationalized New York Times article condemning the recent wolf hunt in Wisconsin. They deconstruct some breakdowns in the post & news article. There are biologists who create quotas & regulations that are based on many factors- number & health of the packs, methods of hunting, success rates. The quota approach also means when the quota is met, the hunt is over. This leads them into the reintroduction of wolves in general- Yellowstone & Colorado. The reintroduced wolves are not native to the areas. Wolves are already making their way to Colorado & allowing them to do it on their own naturally will be a better transition than most reintroduction methods. Man is a tricky component of the ecosystem. Man gets involved & mess things up but things also go haywire when we don't include man. A little talk about elk & predator overpopulation especially where man is not hunting, for example national parks. Nature follows the path of least resistance- predators will go for young, not the old bull who is no longer reproducing. This is a scenario where man is beneficial for the health of a herd. Hunters have an intimate relationship & understanding of the animals they hunt. Also how hunting season has “trained” animals, elk to private land or national parks, grizzlies hear a gunshot & know it's dinner time. They talk a bit about the difference between black bears & grizzly bears. Alan shares about a close encounter with a black bear when he had a bear tag which ultimately turned into a funny story. They discuss some regulations on bear hunting, like that you cannot hunt a sow with cubs & hunting season ends when a specific number of females are hunted. There are taxes on ammo and weapons that all go to conservation, as well as licenses & tags. Hunters fund over 50% of conservation efforts & it is pretty obvious that hunters want to be able to hunt, so they don't want animal populations to disappear. They can be the best conservationists. Alan gives insight into elk populations & why hunting helps keep the population healthy. There is some discussion about poachers & corruption within hunting, however to stop hunting as a whole will not help this problem. Alan shares why he believes trophy hunting is important & shouldn't be condemned. He expands on it in regards to Africa, the money and meat goes back to the locals. Alan talks about the points system, elk hunting in specific areas including native lands, private lands. He shares about how well known Apache Tribe's San Carlos hunts are because of the size of elk which all comes with a price tag. They laugh about situations where hunting guides set up shots for clients & the clients still don't get it. Elk meat is incredible! Alan touches on endangered species & how species will be endangered in a specific area but not endangered as a whole species. They have a conversation around ethics in hunting. Both of them emphasize how important it is to look beyond face value. Be curious, research. Alan gives a shout out to Jocko's podcast with Tulsi Gabbard. Alan and Bre open with a quick conversation about material items and living a more simplistic life. Bre then leads us through our breathing exercise and they jump right in to Alan's morning rituals. Alan loves his mornings because they are exclusively for him. By sticking to his regimented mornings, it keeps him on track throughout his day. Part of Alan's morning routine is hanging out with his dogs, his older dog was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and was put on meds, now his dog is acting like a puppy again. The news is not in his morning routine. He sticks with reading and meditation. Alan shares that meditation for him is about being comfortable and looking at his breath. Tells a story about letting one of his students know that meditation should be comfortable. Bre calls out Alan about this comfortable aspect because Alan talked about being with discomfort in yoga class earlier in the week. Alan shares another quote from that class: “Empathy is not supposed to ease discomfort.” They continue to converse about removing barriers to get you into meditation. A reminder that meditation comes in many forms, moving and/or still. Bre talks about Yoga Nidra and how she uses it as her primary form of meditation. Nidra uses the biological process of sleep to drop into deeper brainwave states; 45 minutes Nidra can be 3 hours of sleep. Alan brings up the impact of drugs and their effects on sleep cycles. Bre talks about her Whoop strap and brags about how awesome of a sleeper she is. They talk about consistency not being either bad/good. It takes years of consistency to train yourself, while we all want instant gratification that is not what the journey is about. Routines and self care are important because selfishness leads to selflessness. Your cup must be full to be able to pour from it. Alan shares that he and his wife often talk about having the right tools to ensure what you are doing in life is going to lead to success and what you want. Bre and Alan relate instant gratification to our technology phone era. Alan then dives into his nightly routine which includes hot tea, more reading, beauty care including night time eye cream and going to sleep in a conducive environment for sleep. Bre starts on her nightly routine. No phone before bed. She talks about intermittent fasting. When in bed, she writes in one of her many journals, a few words about how she felt that day, 3 gratitude points and what she wants to share with the world. They continue to discuss journaling. Bre wakes up and first uses her dream journal to write down her dreams, she looks at if there are consistencies and patterns in her dreams. When Bre is out of bed, she greets the earth, pulls an animal spirit card for reflection, does breathing exercises and sun salutations [yogic movement.] Bre and Alan talk about the habits they have and how through routine we can attempt to weed out the bad ones. But we must understand, are we walking the dog or is the dog walking us. Her coffee ritual is important with hand grinder and aeropress, keeps things slow. For intermittent fasting, she does not eat early which was initially a hard habit to change. Bre comes back to empathy and how it can diminish someone else's experience. We should recognize that although experiences might seem the same, every experience is different, no one has the exact same experience. JOURNAL PROMPT: Write about your thoughts from the episode. Thank you to our listeners for providing feedback; you asked us to dive deeper into the impact our gender identity has on the roles we play in life. The topic also felt timely due to current events during the week of recording. Alan shares a text thread regarding the signing of an executive order that allows participation in men's or women's sports based on gender identification/ identity regardless of biological sex. They talk more specifically the impact transgender females will have on women's sports. Feb 3rd is Women in Sports Day, Bre talks about her own experience & the influence that high school, collegiate & semi pro sports had. They address there are always exceptions, but they are exceptions, not the rule. Women worked hard to get their own division in sports. Bre played water polo which wasn't in the olympics as a women's sport until the year 2000. They talk about the biological differences in men and women, specifically as it relates to sports. They also share it is important for transgender men and women to be able to compete and suggest transgender divisions. Alan and Bre talk about testosterone, estrogen and the advantages that Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs) plays in sports. Discrimination is part of the human DNA. It's what kicks on fight and flight mode which helps us make split second decisions ultimately keeping us alive. We are different!! And that is great! Imagine if we all had the same superpower. That would be lame AF. There are physiological differences. Women bleed monthly! They can also get pregnant & potentially deal with abortions. Rape happens, and it happens to everyone. And to support everyone more effectively, we need to acknowledge these differences. They bring up if we can identify as different genders, why is there such a problem with identifying as different cultures. A double standard that needs to be addressed. Union is not uniformity. Equality is not equity. One only equals one, it never equals one and a half. Life isn't fair, and that is a good thing. We all don't want the same thing. The feminist movement has pushed women into male roles which is creating sameness. You can be both CEO and parent, but then who is raising the children. There is a pendulum swinging - men realize they want to be home more with their families - this is a warning sign for women to not to let that pendulum swing so far as you will regret not being with your families. Alan circles back to feminism and his hatred for the term “toxic masculinity.” A man's job is to protect and provide. Masculinity and Femininity is in all of us. Men and women should be honored for their roles, their superpowers and their choices around it. Everyone needs role models that look like them. Helps to see what is possible. We briefly talk about GMOs and food “buzzwords.” Alan brings up that we are simply sharing our view and relationship with food. Reminds everyone that eating disorders are serious and to seek the appropriate help if you have an eating disorder. Bre reminds us to do what is best for you, make sure you have awareness around your relationship with food, understand how food makes you feel and listen to what your body is telling you about the food you are consuming or NOT consuming. Alan's hunting story is epic! First he gives perspective about growing up in NYC and what he was taught about guns. Alan shares elk hunting success rates in Colorado - 14% with a bow and 24% with a rifle. In his story, he was so excited with his elk hunting success that in the moment he threw his rifle, while funny, this is a HUGE safety concern and is not something anyone should do. Bre mentions she used to be vegetarian and talks about how her perspective changed; all living things have a soul, killing a plant is like killing an animal. Food relationships can be very cultural and vegetarianism can be considered a privilege. Back in the day, you would never turn down eating meat from a kill, it's survival. We talk about regenerative farming, more buzz words “Organic” and “grass-fed' and the importance of local. Food's correlation to socio-economic levels and that it is more about education than access- time & money play factor. Counter argument is that you are going to pay for it no matter what, food and medication/health problems later. Alan talks exercise and getting off the couch, important to not use exercise for punishment. We need to take ownership of what we eat and drink. Bre references her dad's statement “that it is our generation's job to fix the problems from the prior generation.” This goes for food- not knowing previously what is bad. Alan and Bre discuss the link to big pharma, food and the government. Alan believes healthcare is not what we think it is and mentions his wife Jessica started seeing a Functional Medicine doctor which is a great mixture of eastern and western medicine. Offering gratitude to all of our listeners from our launch of Episode One: The Paradox. Before diving into resolutions, we acknowledge the differences we have in our approaches and that in itself represents our podcast. We hope that everyone can take time to listen to people who think differently than them with an open heart. And in those times we don't, recognizing it and revisiting it. Alan shares his idea of theming his years. This year's theme is “act like a child”. Why? They are awesome, curious, ego-less, persistent, relentless, and they have fun. They dive deeper into this idea of curiosity and the importance of it as an adult, how learning based on others' label of us can be limiting, and learning is different for everyone. Coming back to honoring everyone's differences and everyone's choice of how to use those differences. They talk about superpowers! The conversation circles back to how Alan chooses his themes and the past few years of themes. As Bre dives into why she stopped doing new years' resolutions, they get sidetracked talking about putting energy into what you want instead of what you don't want. Her shift away from resolutions moved towards reflecting on what she's proud of and carries those things with her into the new year. Why wait until the new year to do something? They tap into the significance of the natural cycles of season, the seasonality of individual lives and living accordingly. She shares thinking about who you want to be everyday and how Alan's theme concept is similar to this idea, which diverges them into talking about fixed mindsets. Bre discusses why goals can be limiting and why she changed her focus into a direction, using a sankalpa or intention instead of goals. Using a vision how she wants to live her life to make decisions and guide her, leaving how it shows up to be open ended. This leads them into romanticizing life and the magic circling back to a child's ability to laugh or cry. Alan shares an incredible lesson about being present to what shows up and being ok with the moments of “failures” and the emotions that come with it while antelope hunting. As Alan shares his passion for his long list of goals, he expands on the importance of enjoying the journey with these goals and that his goals have open-ended deadlines instead of rushing to get there. His goals fall into a range of categories and also considers how they all fit together in the big picture to create balance, as well as managing resources. When it comes to goals, go out and get it. Live like you'll live until you're 80 and that you'll die tomorrow. Time is finite, how do you want to show up? Play Episode Listen Later Jan 4, 2021 77:30

Through this episode Alan and Bre start to give you a flavor of what future episodes will be like by discussing many aspects of their lives and the impact yoga has had on them. While yoga and meditation is a major part of their lives, it is not their whole life. Even though there will be discussions around yoga and applying many of the yogic philosophies to life, the topics will vary and some episodes won't even mention yoga. This is about life. First and foremost joining Bre as she walks us through a quick breathing exercise to bring us back to the present, where life actually happens. Then quickly jumping into the impact 2020 and the need to evolve. They talk about changes each have made in their offerings. They share similar feelings of discontent with how many yogis have allowed the divisiveness of politics to creep into the mix creating yet another barrier or turnoff for many. Bre and Alan both share the same goal of being able to provide yoga for EVERYONE because of how much yoga has helped them realize what is actually important in life. They give you insight into what led them to start teaching yoga, share their stories on their first yoga experiences, and the snowball effect that first step had on their corporate careers, life choices and future relationships. As they navigate through their conversation they tell the story of how they met, being a good human and taking care of yourself and others. So why The Hunter and The Hippie? Well that is the paradox, two things that many believe don't go together, actually belong. That life and labels don't have to be an “either or”, it can be a both. And, while Alan and Bre might have a little bit of Hunter and a little bit of Hippie in each of them, ultimately they feel they aren't defined by those things. Bre shares her insight on her blog post “I am NOT a yogi.” Before ending, Alan walks you through a discussion about journaling and its importance.
