Visuals: https://getbehindthebillboard.com/episode-98-peter-heyesEpisode #98 feature Pete Heyes, award-winning creative, creative director, top northern lad and United fan.Pete has worked in the business for over 30 years at some of the very best agencies, including DDB and Leo Burnett. He's won awards on huge brands such as McDonald's, VW, Marmite and Harvey Nichols. People often talk about Pete as ‘one of the nicest guys in the business'. Which we can vouch for. Fun Pete fact: he was once a Media Planner on P&G.We started as usual with the billboard at the end of Pete's street, which is from the recent British Airways campaign. So yes, you guessed it, we had yet more ‘logo v no logo' chat. Then we jumped into another topical debate, the potential demise of the DDB name. And all this before the work, of which Pete has loads. We distilled it down to four clients in the end:VW, Marmite, Magners, and McDonald's.For VW we got behind the story of the classy and minimalist Touareg campaign shot by Giles Revell.Magners was an exercise in collaboration with Illustrator/Artist: Noma Bar, who seems to be everywhere atm, but Pete was the first to use him in advertising.Marmite was the Christmas lights, a bit of love ‘n hate for the festive season. Most apt! While for McDonald's there were many campaigns which Pete worked on both as a creative and a creative director. We managed to cover McNuggets, Lights on McDelivery / Iconic Stacks (Creatives: Andrew Long & James Millers), See One, Want One / Search (Creatives: Phillip Meyler & Darren Keff)Thanks so much for coming on Pete. It was a real pleasure talking about your work and the current state of the industry. Apologies for not having a pint. But hopefully we can fit one in before Christmas. Thanks to our sponsorsBauer Media OutdoorView2FillSuper OptimalGAS Music
Structure isn't a formatting exercise. It's the foundation of every clear, persuasive communication. Whether you're giving a presentation, writing an email, or leading a meeting, structure is the difference between an idea that gets ignored and an idea that creates action. In the latest episode of Conversations on Careers and Professional Life, we explore why structure matters so profoundly — and how leaders, students, and professionals can use it to communicate with more clarity and impact. Why Structure Matters Human beings aren't wired to process information in random fragments. We make sense of the world through stories — beginnings, middles, and ends. As you put it in the episode, we're not "data digesters"; we're storytellers. And when communication wanders, attention wanders with it. A clear structure reduces cognitive friction. It guides your audience through the idea. It shows respect for their time and sets you apart as someone who thinks and leads with intention. The Universal Arc: Beginning → Middle → End The classic story shape applies perfectly to business communication: Beginning: What's the point? Middle: Why does it matter? End: What should we do? In practice, this means starting with your main idea — the recommendation, insight, or conclusion — and only then walking people through the reasoning. This mirrors the Pyramid Principle, but it also aligns with how executives think: give me the destination first, then show me the path. A Simple Structure That Works Everywhere: What → So What → Now What You referenced Matt Abrahams' framework from Think Faster, Talk Smarter: What: The headline or central idea So What: The significance — why it matters Now What: The implication or action This structure keeps communication focused and future-oriented. It helps audiences quickly understand context, importance, and next steps. And when you use it, people stop interrupting with "What's your point?" because you've already answered it. Slide Structure: One Idea, One Message Every slide should tell a mini-story: A clear title that states the point, not a topic A single idea supported by one graph, chart, or set of bullets Visuals that reinforce your narrative rather than compete with it The slide is scaffolding — not the building. Your voice delivers the narrative; the slide supports it. Meeting Structure: Avoid the Rudderless Hour Unstructured meetings drift. Structured meetings decide. A simple three-bullet agenda can turn an hour-long discussion into a 20-minute decision. Before any meeting, ask: What's the goal? What's the sequence that gets us there? What decisions or actions do we need? Structure creates momentum, momentum creates clarity, and clarity creates action. Editing as Structural Discipline Editing is structuring. This is where Chekhov's Gun becomes a communication tool: remove anything that doesn't serve the message. Ask: If I cut this sentence, slide, or data point, does the meaning change? If not, remove it. Editing isn't erasing work — it's generosity. It gives your audience time and brings clarity. Remember the ABCs! A Simple Method for Structuring Anything Identify your main point. List two or three reasons that support it. Add only the evidence necessary to prove those reasons. Arrange it in a natural sequence — then cut everything else. It's deceptively simple, but rarely done well — and that's why it stands out. The Leadership Signal Ultimately, structure is more than communication mechanics. It's a leadership signal. Structured communicators show that they think clearly, respect their audience, and understand how decisions get made. The episode closes with a reminder worth repeating: Structure isn't just a communication tool. It's a mark of how you think. And it matters more than most people realize.

We just watched The Last Spark of Hope on Amazon, and it's one of the weirdest, most visually impressive post-apocalyptic films we've seen. The story follows Eva, possibly the last human alive, trapped outside her compound by her guardian robot Arthur, a machine programmed not to harm humans, but also incapable of saving her or bending the rules to help.Arthur's logic becomes both a lifeline and a prison: it won't kill Eva, but it also won't act to prevent her death, and watching this robot navigate the rules of (in)humanity is equal parts frustrating and fascinating. The film's depiction of rigid AI programming as a metaphor for broken bureaucracy is confusing, sometimes slow, but deeply thought-provoking. Some moments don't add up, how can a robot refuse to help but not intervene to save a life? Still, every frame looks amazing, with cinematography and practical effects that punch above the film's indie budget. Were you as baffled by Arthur's inaction as we were? Did you love the visual style but got thrown by the story? Let's talk sci-fi ethics, bad logic, and whether a robot's programming should ever outweigh human survival. Drop your thoughts below, and subscribe for more reviews!

Content doesn't have to be new. It does have to be useful and consistent. The Breakdown: 30 Days of Content From One Subscription Box Your monthly plan, no guesswork required. Visuals: https://getbehindthebillboard.com/episode-97-andy-clough-richard-mcgrannGood things come to those who wait … and we've been waiting a while for Andy Clough & Richard McGrann, but it was thoroughly worth it. Andy & Rich are one of adland's most brilliant and prolific teams, creating iconic award-winning work wherever they've worked. RKCR / Y&R, BBH, AMVBBDO, adam&eveDDB and Neverland have all benefited from their passion for big ideas, superbly executed. They've won awards wherever they've been, including 5 Grand Prix for their emotive ‘The Last Photo' campaign for CALM, placing them amongst the world's most awarded creatives at D&AD and Cannes. In a packed episode, we talked about The Times ‘Biggest For Sport' campaign and got a sneak peek into Andy's notebook and his sketches which were incredibly close to the finished work. For The Last Photo we discovered the inspiration for the big idea came in part from a Google search for ‘depression / suicide'. Every result had people sad, head in hands, in a dark place. The question was asked, what if people looked happy? Like a weight had been lifted, because they had decided to take the next step. This lead to the line ‘Suicide doesn't always look suicidal' and the concept of the last photo featuring real people. It's an incredibly moving story and a worthy follow up to the previous year's Project84 from Ant & Mike.We went into the wild with Whiskas, Feeding Your Cat's Instinct, which naturally won an outdoor Lion ;-)While for The Economist, for once we didn't discuss white headlines out of red, instead a thought provoking piece of DOOH on the subject of assisted suicide.Another important project was for Melanoma, more great crafting a simple graphic idea. And of course we found out how pot holes help create a great poster campaign for Pot Noodle.Gents, it was a total pleasure. So much amazing work for such a range of brands and projects, a tour de force in the great outdoors. Thank you so much. Thanks to our sponsorsBauer Media OutdoorView2FillSuper OptimalGAS Music

When the BBC are looking to close the “gender fame” gap, why are they neglecting the “gender frame gap”? In a world overwhelmed by AI-generated imagery and shrinking newsroom budgets, the value of authentic photojournalism has never been more at risk — or more essential. The National Press Photographers Association is sounding the alarm: visuals aren't just decoration, they're the backbone of truth, trust, and emotional connection in journalism. In this exclusive interview, NPPA Vice President Lauren Steinbrecher and Grady College's Mark E. Johnson break down why local publishers, students, and reporters must fight for the future of visual storytelling. Because if we lose the image, we may just lose the story itself. Visuals: https://getbehindthebillboard.com/episode-96-ajab-samraiEpisode #96 features Ajab Samrai, Ex-CCO of Ogilvy Japan, who not only brought incredible stories of nearly four decades in the business, but two enormous bags of apples from his orchard in the Malvern Hills. We discussed how Ajab started his career at Saatchi & Saatchi in 1987 as one of the first British born Asians to break into the industry, creating the iconic Commission for Racial Equality poster campaign. He became one of the youngest Creative Group Heads in the history of Saatchi's going on to work on some of the world's biggest brands. We discovered why he decided to ‘frighten himself' after his long tenure at Saatchi's to take up the challenge of Ogilvy Japan, an agency in a different country, with a different culture and different language. Plus the agency was stuck at the very bottom of the Ogilvy league. No pressure then! His story of success is a lesson in perseverance and belief with some incredible OOH projects for Tokyo FM and Uber Eats, helping Ogilvy Japan become agency of the year and Ajab was named Japanese creative of the year. This success helped push his awards tally to over 300, winning major honours at every show in the world.Listen to the craft that went into the Sagawa soy sauce campaign, where all the imagery was created by an artist using soy sauce. And hear how the Condomania campaign flirted with suffocating the cast on what must be one of the most insane shoots ever. We even had time to cover the Mount Fuji Rubbish Billboards which were anything but rubbish, cleaning up the mountain and at awards shows alike.Ajab thank you so much for being so generous with your stories (and your apples!). The Return of the Show This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl are talking about the finales of Alien: Earth and The Terminal List: Dark Wolf (remember those shows?). Then delve into a baby pool of Gen V season 2. Finally… Tron: Ares. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 Tron: Ares: 5:26 The Terminal List: 14:33 Alien Earth: 28:18 Tron: Ares (2025) Tron: Ares Release date: October 10, 2025 (theatrical) Director: Joachim Rønning Screenwriter: Jesse Wigutow (story also by Wigutow) Producers: Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Jared Leto, Emma Ludbrook, Steven Lisberger Distributor: Walt Disney Pictures Music: Score composed by Nine Inch Nails. Runtime: ~1h 59m (119 minutes) Genre: Sci-fi / action / adventure Cast Jared Leto as Ares (Program) Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, Gillian Anderson Jeff Bridges returns as Kevin Flynn (classic role) Plot Summary (Premise / What We Know) Premise: A sophisticated Program, named Ares, is sent from the digital Grid into the real world on a “dangerous mission,” marking humanity's first direct encounter with sentient A.I. Conflict: Ares is deployed to retrieve Kevin Flynn's permanence code (or a code enabling A.I. extension) from a rival tech CEO, Eve Kim. Ares gradually develops emotions, shifting the mission's stakes. Visuals & Style: Heavy neon, digital effects, light cycles, digital-real world blending. One trailer labels it “Filmed for IMAX.” Music / Sound: The score by Nine Inch Nails. They released a track “As Alive As You Need Me To Be.” Reception (early): Mixed. On Rotten Tomatoes, ~55% Tomatometer, but high audience score (~87%). Production notes: Filming took place in Vancouver, wrapped ~May 2024. Considerations The premise is intriguing (bringing a sentient A.I. into our world), but early reviews note that while the visuals are strong, the plot is sometimes thin or formulaic. Because Tron has a cult legacy and visual identity, expectations are high; missteps in character or plot substance tend to stand out. The Nine Inch Nails score is a bold choice (replacing Daft Punk's iconic Legacy sound) and could either elevate or distance fans depending on taste. The bridging between digital reality and human reality is always a tricky balance — the narrative will need to ground its sci-fi concepts in human stakes (emotions, morality) to avoid feeling hollow. The Terminal List: Dark Wolf (Amazon Prime) Series origin: A prequel to The Terminal List, based on the Jack Carr novel and characters. Creators: Jack Carr & David DiGilio Finale / Plot Summary In the finale, Ben Edwards (Taylor Kitsch) and James Reece rejoin forces to expose and dismantle a deep conspiracy that's been manipulating events behind the scenes. In one key sequence, Ben lures Iranian forces into what they think is a trap (a cabin in the mountains outside Tehran) — but it's a reverse ambush. Using hidden defenses, he turns the tide. When the soldiers breach the cabin, Ben's counterattack ignites, intercut with a Pink Floyd “Brain Damage” cue (a stylized flourish) After the finale, Ben's surviving allies spread out across Istanbul, Tehran, and Virginia to address the remaining threads and avenge fallen comrades. Reception / Notes The finale leans hard into action, retribution, and vengeance, with less room for emotional reflection. Some praised its boldness, others saw it as standard action fare wrapped in swagger. Because Dark Wolf is tied to The Terminal List universe, many viewers also weigh how it sets up or reframes earlier entries. Ratings Series Finale Out of 5, Truthful Conclusions Daryl: 4.5/5 Brian: 4.49/5 Series Out of 10, You Don’t Take a Man’s Wings Darryl: 8.3/10 Brian: 7.89/10 Alien: Earth (FX) Series creator / showrunner: Noah Hawley Episode title: “The Real Monsters” Writers: Noah Hawley & Migizi Pensoneau Director: Dana Gonzales Original air date: September 23, 2025 Runtime: ~47 minutes Franchise placement: It's the first TV series in the Alien franchise, set ~2 years before the original Alien film (so circa 2120) Season & Finale Summary Over the season, Wendy (a hybrid human-robot) and her brother Hermit (aka Joe) have been navigating a crash of the spaceship Maginot on Earth, corporate machinations (Prodigy vs Weyland-Yutani), and the threat of Xenomorphs. In the finale, several factions converge at Neverland (the Prodigy research facility). Arthur (a hybrid) gives birth to a second Xenomorph before dying, and the “adult” Xenomorph attacks. Meanwhile, Wendy and the Lost Boys forcibly take control of the facility, locking up Boy Kavalier, Dame Sylvia, Kirsh, Morrow, and Atom Eins in a cell. Wendy summons a Xenomorph to guard them. Joe is nearly fed to a single-eyed creature (“ocellus”) but survives; the ocellus ends up at Arthur's corpse on the beach, potentially taking him as a host. Wendy in the final moments stands over the locked cell and says, “Now, we rule.” She also confronts Boy K with the collapse of his Peter Pan mythology: “You were never a boy. You've always been a man.” Many critics note the finale is more of a cliffhanger than a neat wrap, raising big questions and leaving threads dangling for season 2. Reception & Critique Highlights Praise for visuals, ambition, and performances (especially Morrow vs Kirsh dynamic) Criticism: some felt the show “lost sight” of its eerie, dreamlike tone by the end, and that the finale overused convenience (aliens appearing in exactly the right spots) Ratings Season Finale Out of 5, What Happens When a Boy Genius Is Obsessed with an Eyeball Darryl: 2/5 Brian: 4.32/5 Season 1 Out of 10, Aliens Run a Muck and a Rich Guy’s Island Darryl: 5/10 Brian: 7.25/10 Contact Us The Infamous Podcast can be found wherever podcasts are found on the Interwebs, feel free to subscribe and follow along on social media. The Cinematography Podcast Episode 328: Kira Kelly, ASC Cinematographer Kira Kelly, ASC, had a rare opportunity in the movie HIM: exploring the genres of horror and sports, which are not usually combined. She and director Justin Tipping focused their discussions on Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), specifically how football-related brain injuries often cause hallucinations. This condition was central to building the feeling of surrealism for the main character, Cam. Before beginning the 8 weeks of prep on HIM, director Justin Tipping created an extensive lookbook with ideas for the atmosphere, lighting and costumes. To establish the film's unique, suspenseful, and surrealistic look, he suggested Kira watch The Holy Mountain and Black Swan. “Justin was open to lots of collaboration,” says Kira. “I feel like this film does have such a strong visual look because we were all working together to make the movie.” Camera movement, color, and lighting are all integral to the movie's storytelling. As Cam descends deeper into the underground compound, Kira used specific colors and lighting. She created a document to track the emotional influence of color for each scene, integrating the lighting into the set and programming the colors to change per sequence. Red with orange highlights was used for the Saviors party, reflecting the oxblood red of the team colors. Fuchsia and magenta were used to show rage. For the scenes on the training field, Kira used top lighting, so that the skin tones of the players would have some reflectivity. Kira's camera work parallels Cam's psychological journey. “At the beginning, it should be fun,” Kira explains. “He's playing football. It's much more loose.” The crew used handheld and body cameras, plus a boomerang rig that sent the camera flying down the field. Once Cam feels trapped in the compound, Kira shifted the style dramatically. “That's where we get into more of these center- punched static frames. He's trapped figuratively, and all the ways.” One of HIM's most unique visual elements was the use of a Flir thermal imaging camera. Kelly and Tipping wanted to use the thermal camera to visually represent the internal trauma of what was happening inside the players' bodies and brains during tackles. Kira and her crew created a rig to mount the Flir camera right above the ALEXA 35 and found that the images could converge and focus enough to allow the two images to overlay. The shots could flick back and forth between the regular camera and the thermal camera. In post, VFX added the brains and accentuated the muscles. The thermal camera effectively showed blood flow and hot and cold areas, adding a chilling layer to the physical impact of the sport. Kira feels gratified that her vision for the visual style of HIM tells an effective story. “As a DP, every challenge I have is if an audience is able to understand the story,” she says. “If they don't have the wonderful dialogue, if they don't have the music, if they don't have all of those other things helping the story along, could they tell what's happening just with the imagery? And I feel like with HIM, I say, yeah, I think so. You can see it happening. And that's what's super exciting to me.” See HIM in theaters and on VOD.
