Using the law to charge and imprison political opponents is a favorite tactic of dictators the world over. In an age of growing global authoritarianism, unscrupulous rulers are getting more strategic about their methods and sharing lessons learned. The fight to free political prisoners is one with moving goalposts for the human rights attorneys and advocates working hard behind the scenes. Jared Genser of Perseus Strategies and Caoilfhionn Gallagher of Doughty Street Chambers, both human rights lawyers, explain how these processes often play out in reality, and where governments frequently fall short. Diane Foley, founder of the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation, created and named for her journalist son in 2014 after his public beheading by ISIS, describes what motivated her to try and improve efforts to free hostages after her horrific experience. Mark Stephens, the founder of Howard Kennedy law firm in the UK, moderates the conversation. aspenideas.org

What does the Christmas promise of “peace on earth” mean in the face of human suffering, natural disasters, and other heartbreaks that are part of all our lives?Twenty years ago, the Indian Ocean tsunami claimed the lives of some 225,000 people, after battering the coastlines of India, Indonesia, Malysia, the Maldives, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Seychelles, Thailand, and Somalia.Tim Costello, then CEO of World Vision, was among the first to be on the ground in Sri Lanka, which was among the countries worst affected. He recounts being confronted with the mammoth scale of devastation on the ground and the tragedy of so many lives lost. Then we hear from former CPX-er Mark Stephens, now Lecturer in New Testament at Sydney Missionary Bible College, about what the Christmas promise of “peace on earth” could possibly mean in the face of untold human suffering – and what are the grounds of hope now and into the future. This is our last episode of Life & Faith for the year but we will be back in 2025. From the whole team at CPX, we wish you a Merry Christmas.

Somewhere to call home - do you rent, own, or live with your parents? The choices are diminishing for the under 30s, and older people who own their houses are suddenly facing a massive uptick in mortgage rates. The UK has a housing crisis and it's going to test whether a property-owning democracy is still the best model to follow. Is it a question of using tax and regulation to push house-builders and to straighten out the rental sector? Or something more fundamental? Mark Stephens, Professor of Land, Property and Urban Studies at Glasgow University, tells Phil and Roger this is a real crisis and needs real and urgent solutions. This episode is supported by Wigmore Associates, who provide portfolio management services on both a discretionary and advisory basis, together with pension, tax planning and inheritance tax advice to Individuals, Trusts, Pension Schemes, Family Offices, and Charities. Episode 10 is with Mark Stephens of Deep Rooted Wines based in Walker Bay, South Africa. Mark is a regenerative viticulturist-turned-winemaker and is a prominent figure in the Cape South Coast's new wave. The South Coasters - as they call themselves - are an exciting group of winemakers whose energy and enthusiasm resemble that of the Swartland revolution a number of years ago. Another one in this group whose name you might recognize from our book is Natasha Williams of Lelie van Saron. Mark is a new addition to our portfolio and he's unique in that he's one of our only producers who makes strictly zero added sulfur wines. This choice is a personal one for Mark as he's got a pretty strong sensitivity to sulfur, but he was fed up with going to natural wine fairs and being served unequivocally flawed wines and being told “it's ok, it's natural.” So he set out to make clean, low pH, sulfur-free wines under his own label. We've got two of his wines, a skin-contact Verdelho called “Touch Me” with a pretty unique label (keep listening to hear that story) and a textural Fumé Blanc. In this episode, you'll hear Mark's story of how he came to understand the connection between feeling good and zero sulfur. You'll also hear why he uses the term "wellness wine" when describing his wines, as well as why he decided to name his Verdelho "Touch Me"... Hosted by Charlotte Alsaadi. In the wake of the pandemic, we are increasingly immersed in a hybrid working environment. The remote work revolution that began in the early days of Covid has now morphed into hybrid work. This means that organizations have to be prepared to meet workers where they are, and that could be anywhere. Work is now a thing we do, not a place we go, so employees need the ability to be productive no matter where they are. Since 98% of remote meetings have a remote participant joining, security needs to be at the forefront of organizations' agendas. On this episode of eXcellerate, Chris Poe and Mark Stephens discuss how security architecture must continue to evolve alongside the hybrid work landscape. Press play to learn what hybrid work organizations need to focus on, why technology integration is so important, whether firewalls are still relevants today, and how organizations are dealing with the shortage of cybersecurity workers. Stick around until the end to hear Mark define the hottest industry buzzwords. Are his definitions what you think of when you hear these terms? Dominic Raab is facing renewed allegations of bullying behaviour. In this episode we turn the clock back to the time he took out a 'confidentiality agreement' -which lawyers tell us is EXACTLY the same as an NDA; a non-disclosure agreement. In 2011 he refused to release the woman who signed it from being able to tell her side of the story. We hear from Mark Stephens, a solicitor, who shows us how NDAs are being used and abused in the corridors of power. And from Zelda Perkins - former personal assistant to Harvey Weinstein - who was herself silenced by an NDA for 23 years and is now campaigning to change the law to stop NDAs being used to cover up abusive or criminal behaviour. Her campaign is Can't Buy My Silence. Jack Absolute Flies Again, at the National Theatre, is an adaptation of Sheridan's comedy of manners The Rivals. Writers Richard Bean (who wrote One Man, Two Guvnors – a big hit) and Oliver Chris keep the original characters – Lydia Languish, Sir Anthony Absolute and the lexically challenged Mrs Malaprop – but move the action from 18th Century Bath to the Battle of Britain. Samira Ahmed talks to director Emily Burns about this, and to Peter Forbes, who plays Sir Anthony, about finding character in the comedy. Pianist and songwriter Joe Stilgoe on his new album, Theatre - which he describes as a love letter to the theatre - and performs for us live in the studio. In Paris, conceptual art has found itself in the dock, as rights of authorship over some of the artworks created by artist Maurizio Cattelan - including one of his most famous works,'La Nona Ora' (The Ninth Hour), a wax figure of Pope Jean Paul II struck by a meteor – are at the centre of a legal case brought by the French sculptor Daniel Druet. In the wake of the court's judgment, lawyer Mark Stephens, discusses the issues the case raises. Presenter: Samira Ahmed Producer: Julian May
In this episode, I speak with Mark Stephens, the former chief public defender of Knoxville Tennessee. Tennessee public defense has been stuck in neutral, if not reverse for a long time. In fact, almost everything was established in the 90's and hasn't changed much since. Rutherford county incarcerated approximately 48% of children referred to juvenile court in 2014, and the statewide average for juvenile incarceration is 5%. Today, we talk about two alarming reports that have been released discussing the representation of juvenile offenders in the state. In Tennessee, public defenders are elected to 4 and 8-year terms. Mark also highlights how this unique system affects the levels of representation and the bottom line. Overall, Mark leaves us with his ideas for a better system and the hope that the Tennessee public defense system will change for good. Key Topics and Takeaways: Mark's position in Tennessee public defense and how he got there. [6:28] Elected public defenders. [10:48] Public defender workloads and caseloads. If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?“We all know what it's like to be angry, sad, fearful, hurt, guilty, bored, frustrated etc. The problem is we often get stuck in these states. Most people have no idea on how to help people snap out of a negative state and flip the switch to a positive state.”________As we ride the rollercoaster of life, we realise that not every day will go to plan, and our positive state may change to a negative one, and vice versa. One minute we may be feeling happy, content, calm, energetic or excited and then something happens to change our state. We end up feeling stressed, frustrated, angry, sad or any one of a hundred other states. This is pretty normal. Imagine if more people knew how to help someone change their state. Racism, Incarceration, and Yoga with Ayla BenjaminRacism is deeply embedded in the histories of yoga even as it offers visions and practices of liberation. From delimiting caste systems in ancient-to-modern societies to contemporary racist ideologies and social and cultural forces, race matters, is a source of profound harm predicated upon fundamental lies about the nature of human beings. Sexuality and communication are as common as they are complex. While ancient-to-modern yoga texts and teachings provide various views on sex and morals, matters of sexual desire, power, transference, trauma, and communication are often as problematic in yoga classes as the are in the larger world. A generation of young people have grown up in confused cultures where "no means no" is all too often ignored, "yes means yes" can lead to unwanted interaction, and basic values of loving kindness and dignity get lost in questions of consent, which can obscure deeper feelings, desires, and needs for safety, joy, and well being.Tune in here to learn more about sexuality and communication in yoga and life.Episode Highlights:A short introductory talk by Mark Stephens on sexuality and yoga.A fascinating exchange with Jennifer Hellwarth and Joshua Searle-White based on classes they've co-taught at Allegheny College on Sexuality, Relationships, and Consent.Conversation about sexual awareness, interaction in classes, power dynamics, and the importance of respect and kindness.Discussion of touch in yoga and life. This week I'm happy to speak with my friend Mark Stephens. Mark has been a police officer for 13 years, first in Phoenix and now in Nashville. Mark explains how he first became aware of systemic racism in American society and law, and the process of becoming more educated about it. He tells stories from his years on the job that demonstrate the power of empathy and treating all people with dignity and respect. I also ask him about gun culture, deescalation tactics, and mediation—which he's recently taken up. He's currently writing a memoir tentatively titled “Lessons Learned from Tragedy: A Misfit Cop's Journey to Awakening.” Here's a link to the books of Tim Wise, which Mark recommends: amazon.com/Tim-J-Wise/e/B001ITVYTI This ad-free podcast is supported by Sam's Torode's books, including “Living from the Soul: The 7 Spiritual Principles of Ralph Waldo Emerson,” available at samtorode.com.
