The city of Leeds seen through public art past, present and future. In this edition, Malika Booker considers an architectural sculptural frieze located on Abtech House, 18 Park Row, Leeds (formerly West Riding Union Buildings) created in 1900 by the stonemason and sculptor Joseph Thewlis. The sculpture depicts emblematic figures related to Leeds commerce at the time, linked to the abundance of textile industry and mills in Yorkshire and Leeds. As a member of the Caribbean community living in Chapeltown, she is particularly interested in the Minerva Goddess presiding over these figures, as well as the figures depicting the bank's relationship with empire. She is caught by the multicultural portrayal of figures representing different aspects of Industry and the world, but of particular interest is the depiction of an enslaved African figure lifting and bending over bales of cotton. This lyrically poetic essay considers the changing visual, political, social and environmental changes that the sculptural frieze has witnessed and the ways in which the world has moved away from this depiction of black bodies. Malika is and international writer, double winner of Forward Prize for Poetry and Douglas Caster Cultural Fellow at University of Leeds.Writer/reader, Malika Booker Sound designer, Alisdair McGregor Producer, Polly ThomasContains some historical racial terminology. Mo LeaThe Long Shadow, written by George Kay, and based on Michael Bilton's book Wicked Beyond Belief, is a seven-part ITV drama based on the police hunt for a sadistic necrophiliac who terrorised women in the north of England throughout the late 1960s and 1970s. With the consultation and blessing of the families of his victims, the drama lays bare the violent misogyny and prejudicial policing that came to characterise the hunt for the so-called Yorkshire Ripper. I talk to Mo about how she survived a near-fatal attack by Sutcliffe in 1980. Mo Lea was an art student in the city when she became a target for the serial killer, Peter Sutcliffe.Mo, who had moved to Leeds from Liverpool, was out with friends in a pub in the Chapeltown area of the city, planning her 21st birthday. It was October 25, 1980, and the friends went their separate ways just after 10pm, as Mo decided to walk through the university campus to catch the bus. A man approached behind her, hit the back of her head with a hammer and attacked with a screwdriver. Her life was saved by a passing couple who heard her screams. She was assaulted so violently that her parents failed to recognise her in the hospital, her jaw broken, her face bloodied and bruised. At the time, Sutcliffe had murdered 12 women and left another seven for dead. Several months later, while recuperating at home in Liverpool, she recognised Sutcliffe on the TV as the man that attacked her. 'When you have had trauma like that, it gives you an edge,' she told me. 'If you've been close to death, you feel you've been granted this freedom to live. It has compelled me to be successful in my career.'Mo's book:https://www.amazon.co.uk/Facing-Yorkshire-Ripper-Art-Survival/dp/1526777576Her website: https://www.molea.art/Peter Sutcliffe, drawn by Mo Lea This is a public episode. During the 1970's, a brutal serial killer terrorized the women of Manchester and West Yorkshire England. By the time he was apprehended, Peter Sutcliffe, known as the Yorkshire Ripper, had claimed the lives of thirteen young women and girls, and had attempted to kill at least eight more. Many of them sex workers he had picked up in red light districts. His killings created a culture of fear and suspicion in England. Every man was looked at with a side eye; whether he was your neighbor, teacher, bus driver, or father. Even after Sutcliffe was arrested in January of 1981, there was still a lingering dark cloud, causing women who were walking alone at night to pick up their pace, and glance over their shoulders. But by the early 90's, the fear had subsided and Peter Sutcliffe and his horrendous crimes had faded to a cold memory. But when the West Yorkshire police received a letter from an anonymous man in July of 1991, alleging that he had kidnapped a prostitute off a street in Chapeltown, those distant, cold memories began to grow more vivid. The letter claimed that unless a ransom of 140 thousand pounds was paid, the girl would be killed, and the clock on Julie Dart's life began to tick down. The Leeds West Indian Carnival is something very close to my heart, and those familiar with the carnival may have, like myself, always noticed that almost every notable image published of it over the years was photographed by someone called Max Farrar. A long standing local of Chapeltown, activist, sociologist, and author of The Struggle for ‘Community’ in a British Multi-ethnic Inner-city Area (2002), I was honoured to finally get the chance to meet and talk with Max about his own history within the area, his five decades of social action, and the work of the David Oluwale Memorial Association he is part of.For those not familiar with David Oluwale, I don’t feel it right to shorten his story in these episode notes, but be assured that his story will be re-told loudly and widely in the upcoming months as we approach the 50th anniversary of his death. You may remember from Episode 6 with Jade Montserrat, in which she speaks of Rasheed Araeen’s work For Oluwale (1971-73), that has surprisingly never been exhibited in Leeds. This work will finally be presented as an updated version at The Tetley from the 16th February.

If you've read any comic books over the last 30 years, odds are you have read a Ron Randall issue or two along the way. From Conqueror of the Barren Earth to Justice League International to Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire and most recently Future Quest, Ron's pencils and stories have covered every possible genre there is. But the one book he is most associated with is his own creation, Trekker, which is the ongoing adventures of bounty hunter Mercy St. Clair. Since the late 1980s, Ron has been telling Mercy's story at Dark Horse Comics. Ron has a new set of Trekker stories to get out, and he has a Kickstarter launching on February 20 to make that happen. The work is done; the Kickstarter is to cover the publishing costs, so you will see the finished product if you support this initiative. Check back in here in two weeks, and we will have a link to the Kickstarter. In the meantime, check out Ron Randall's website to see all of the different projects he's worked on, and where you can sample Trekker before you buy it. And you will buy it, trust us! In addition, if you are in the Portland area this weekend, you will find Ron set up at I Like Comic Con. Not only will Ron be set up there in a jam-packed artist alley, but you will also find Cullen there representing the Hero Initiative. We would love to hear your comments on the show. After the violence directed at black people in Nottingham and Notting Hill in the 1950s, and the naked racism expressed in Smethwick during the 1964 general election, a group of pioneering West Indians came up with a simple and defiant riposte: Carnival. In Queens of Chapeltown, Colin Grant goes behind the scenes of Carnival to its Leeds West Indian HQ in Chapeltown - amidst the glue guns, sequins and feathers - to capture that moment of extraordinary transformation, 50 years on: the birth of a tradition which, for one weekend in August, would wash away the bad taste of anti immigrant sentiment with a burst of colour and flash of exuberance that would forever change Britain. Grant travels to Leeds to talk with the pioneers and celebrate the endurance and growth of Carnival. Produced and presented by Colin Grant.
In this, the final soak in the virtual bathroom, Sam and Chris prepare to say goodbye to their respective homes in France and Chapeltown. In a particularly bathroomy episode, Chris brings a bathroom-fixated reworking of a classic folk song and Sam encourages us to take some sexy pics in the bathroom. Damien McHugh sends a guest dispatch he made on an ancient phone and, as promised in Episode 18, we have two dispatches about DFTCB Facebook page 100th liker. Molly Ibbitson was the lucky(?)winner and she may or may not own a dog (we don't know).
Back in the Chapeltown studios, four of the DFTCB crew convene for a boozy celebration of Sam's thesis completion. Joining Chris, Sam and Producer Paul this time is the original Chapeltown resident and Sheffield mayoral election hopeful Daniel Gunson. Mayor Gunson tries to appeal to the electorate by announcing progressive financial policies and inviting them all round for a cup of tea. In this strange, new post-thesis world, Sam compiles a Freedom Mixtape and Chris suggests, via song, various career paths that Sam could take. Sam takes to Instagram to find motivation and Chris takes to Craigslist to find friends. In the bathroom department, there is a spooky anonymously-submitted bathroom-made dispatch and we also journey back in time to visit the bathroom of a major historical figure. "The weighty pocket of the everyman need be no more!" Gunson 2017
