Send us a textSteve Smith of the Vapors stops by to discuss their latest release, Wasp in the Jar, their upcoming tour, and their longevity career. *****Best known for their massive 1980 worldwide hit “Turning Japanese,” The Vapors continue to bring their individually styled brand of music to fans old and new in the form of high-quality live performances and the ongoing development of critically acclaimed new material. The band, formed in 1979, had already gained a substantial live following around their hometown of Guildford, Surrey and in London, when they were brought to large UK audiences with their support slot on The Jam's iconic 1979 “Setting Sons” tour, by then managed by The Jam's Bruce Foxton and Paul Weller's father John. The release of debut single “Prisoners” in 1979 was followed by 1980's “Turning Japanese “alongside the classic first album New Clear Days. The single reached Number 3 in the UK, Number 1 in Australia, and hit the top 10 in both New Zealand and Canada whilst becoming a mainstream Billboard Top 40 hit in the US. The debut album spawned further hits “News At Ten” and” Waiting for the Weekend” before the very different, but equally well received second album “Magnets” arriving in 1981, providing the singles “Spiders” and further hit “Jimmie Jones”, with the band touring extensively in the UK, US and Australia throughout this period. The band parted company late in 1981, with all members going on to have varied and successful careers across the entertainment industry. In 2016, after a decade of Internet clamour for a revival, they announced their reformation for a short series of gigs, including a sell-out show at London's Dingwalls. Over 170 gigs and 2020's comeback album third album Together and several singles later, they're stronger and more relevant than ever. The band continue to write and perform and have completed two headline tours in the UK since the pandemic, as well as appearing at the Pasadena Rose Bowl's “Cruel World” festival in May 2023, touring the US in 2024 and recording their exciting statement fourth album Wasp In A Jar (to be released on 28th February 2025). They continue to deliver polished shows featuring songs spanning their entire 45-year history. “New Girl Syndrome” The New Zealand-born Lisa Crawley has fearlessly created art and then just as fearlessly followed that art all over the world. From a small town in Japan to a cruise ship to Los Angeles, Crawley is not afraid of the hard miles and she's bravely traversed the globe performing wherever she can. Armed with a luminescent voice and melodic muscle, Crawley's work suggests a dreamy mix of Amy Winehouse and Bic Runga. Over the years she appeared in the Tony-Award winning musical Once, opened for Paul Weller, Simply Red and Suzanne Vega, she's performed with the Auckland Symphony Orchestra and she's had her work appear in everything from The Last Days Of Capitalism to Nancy Drew to Good Trouble. Her new EP New Girl Syndrome is an infectious and stirring song cycle that's contemplative, probing and unreasonably catchy. Lisa's a really funny person and her humor is deadpan and sly and it's a fascinating counterpoint to her emotive and affecting songbook. www.lisacrawley.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenbooks.com IG + Bluesky: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
Extrait : « … You know you're dealing with a slightly classier type of pop star movie when the director has a knighthood, and Sir Steve McQueen's Blitz is no exception. Despite getting no love at this year's Oscars - it's no Emilia Perez, eh, the Academy? - it's still an ambitious, multi-stranded tale of one boy's adventure through the underworld of World War II-era Britain. It tackles racial prejudice, community organising, McQueen's usual theme of the communal role of music and... wait, is that Paul Weller?Maybe it was inevitable that the former frontman of the Style Council and the Jam would end up in a film where people do, indeed, end up down in the tube station at midnight. But there's more to it than that, as Weller superfan Mick points out. Rejoining the show after previously tackling the Style Council movie Jerusalem, he talks to Graham about the many near-misses of Weller's screen career, as well as the many palpable hits of McQueen's. And, since this podcast was recorded late last year we might as well say it here: RIP Rick Buckler. If you want to help us make money without robbing the victims of the Luftwaffe, you can donate to our Patreon where you'll soon find the latest exclusive episode of this very show - one for fans of The Jesus Lizard, we'll say - plus exclusive regular articles on classic Asian genre cinema, The X-Files, Red Dwarf, The Twilight Zone and much more. Pat Arnold has had quite a life. Born in 1946 she grew up in LA, and was in an abusive marriage with two kids while still a teenager. In 1965 she got a chance to audition for Ike and Tina Turner's band as an “Ikette”. She got the gig and left her children in the care of her parents. This eventually took her to London where she fell into the orbit of The Rolling Stones, and she decided to stay behind there to establish herself as a solo artist, signing to Stones' manager Andrew Loog Oldham's label Immediate Records, home of the Small Faces, members of whom ended up writing songs for her and backing her on some of her recordings. She also toured with them, and is the backing vocalist on Itchycoo Park and Tin Soldier, two of their biggest hits. She had hits under her own name too, including her recordings of Angel Of The Morning and The First Cut Is The Deepest. She also recorded with Rod Stewart. In the 70s she appeared on recordings by the likes of Nick Drake, Graham Nash, and Nils Lofgren. She toured with Eric Clapton and recorded with Barry Gibb although most of these recordings remained unreleased for decades. She sadly lost a daughter in a car accident in the mid-70s, and along with not being able to further her career as a solo artist, she seems to view this as somewhat of a lost decade. As well as being cast in Starlight Express, the 80s saw her work with Steel Pulse, The Beatmasters and Roger Waters, as well appearing on Peter Gabriel's smash hit Sledgehammer. She first came into my orbit in the late 90s through her collaboration with Ocean Colour Scene, and the early 2000s saw her tour extensively with Roger Waters. In recent years she finally completed the album she started with Barry Gibb and Eric Clapton decades earlier, as well as a brand new studio album recorded and produced by former podcast guest Steve Craddock of Ocean Colour Scene and Paul Weller fame. She has a new career spanning box set entitled “Soul Survivor - A Life In Song” and I had a fantastic time talking to Pat about her life and career. Instagram: @sendingsignalspodcast

Receiving a transistor radio at the age of 8 sparked David's lifelong passion for music. This early love eventually led him to a career in journalism, where he carved out his own niche as a pop music journalist in London. By his 20s, he was traveling the globe, covering the vibrant world of music. David was with Paul Weller when the iconic Band Aid call came in from Midge Ure, a pivotal moment in music history. He also witnessed firsthand how the rise of MTV revolutionized the way bands promoted their music, transforming the industry. Through a combination of talent and being in the right place at the right time, David built a fascinating career. From listening to cassette demos sent in by bands, he discovered and signed his first Danish Grammy-nominated artist. Now based in Valencia, David has returned to his roots by playing in a band once again. This conversation dives into the fascinating world of backing singers, shares plenty of brilliant name-drops, and offers an insider's look at the music industry. On this week's show, Slate experts June Thomas (author of A Place of Our Own: Six Spaces That Shaped Queer Women's Culture) and Dan Kois (author of Hampton Heights: One Harrowing Night in the Most Haunted Neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) fill in for Dana and Julia. First, the trio tackles Blitz, director Steve McQueen's new film about the German bombings of London during World War II, which stars Saoirse Ronan, Harris Dickinson, and randomly, Paul Weller. For a McQueen movie, it's quite traditional – predictable plot beats, an easy to understand moral viewpoint – but as a piece of culture, does it work? Is the film informative and incredibly ambitious? Or didactic and boring? Then, the panel unravels HBO's Get Millie Black, a British crime drama set in Kingston, Jamaica. Created by Marlon James, the five-part detective series delivers a good, old-fashioned mystery (there's corruption! Familial complications! Rich queer narratives! And way too much voiceover!) that reveals itself slowly, like peeling back the layers of an onion. Finally, can a “vibe” be copyrighted, in a world built on copying? The hosts pour over “Bad Influence,” a reported piece by The Verge about the groundbreaking legal case between two lifestyle influencers that has the potential to radically alter the online commerce industry. In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel discusses movie credits and debates the merits of sitting through them. We are still taking questions for our annual call-in show! It's another epic episode of the Empire Podcast this week, folks, as Chris Hewitt sits down in person with all our guests. First, there's the great Steve McQueen, writer and director of Blitz, to talk about how he approached the World War II drama, and working with Paul Weller. [18:56 - 35:15 approx] Then Chris has a cracking conversation with The Piano Lesson stars John David Washington (following in the footsteps of his father, Denzel, who was a guest on last week's episode) and Danielle Deadwyler, which veers from the hilarious to the heartfelt in no time at all. [56:44 - 1:15:50 approx] And he rounds it all off with an extended excerpt from his spoilerific chat with Transformers One director, Josh Cooley. [1:39:54 - 1:54:52 approx] The full thing is available to spoiler special subscribers. Either side of those, Chris is joined by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer for a truly wicked episode in which they discuss the greatest green performances in cinema, talk about how Greenwich has been temporarily renamed Greenwitch, run their eye over the week's movie news, and review Wicked, Magpie, and The Piano Lesson. Oh, and Chris makes an impassioned plea for the greatest Spice Girls song of them all. Set your spirit free, it's the only way to be. Enjoy.
Jack talks to author Toby Manning (@TobyManning) about his new book Mixing Pop and Politics: A Marxist History of Popular Music, out now from Repeater Books. Naturally, a very JFR-brained understanding of "pop" is applied to the conversation, which focuses on the Rolling Stones and Paul Weller as case studies in the connections between popular music and political ideology. (Couldn't resist getting Toby's thoughts on the Tom York situation at the end.)
Take a deep breath, relax, and listen. That's our first recommendation. Then we've got some tear-jerker music recs. And Davina gives an important update about her health. You can't tell the story of British rock and roll without acknowledging the impact of The Jam. Unfortunately, Paul Weller pretends that chapter never happened, which is sad and confusing. Drummer Rick Buckler recently published the book The Jam 1982 depicting the last year of the band's existence. They start off releasing The Gift with singles like "Town Called Malice" and "Precious" climbing the charts, but it ends with a call from Weller out of nowhere to pack it up. Rick tries to make sense of it all (Paul still isn't talking), the influence of Paul's dad John on the band, the progression of the band's sound, and what he's been doing since, including the short lived band Time UK and About the Jam. It's a disappointing and confusing epitaph for one of the greatest bands in history. www.omnibuspress.com/products/the-jam-1982-special-edition-published-on-17th-november-2022 www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
