For this episode we're joined by veteran music scribe Phil Sutcliffe to discuss his years on Sounds, Q and MOJO. We start by hearing about our guest's Beatles-obsessed adolescence in the North London suburb of Barnet, then follow him up to Manchester University and his subsequent apprenticeship on the Newcastle Evening Chronicle. Phil explains how he got his foot in the door at Sounds in 1974, initially reviewing gigs on Tyneside before moving back to London to become one of the weekly magazine's key '70s writers. We discuss the paper's transition from Gentle Giant and Back Street Crawler to the Damned and the Sex Pistols — and to the interviews Phil did with County Durham punks Penetration and beloved Salford bard John Cooper Clarke.  From JCC's visit to the Oxford Poetry Festival in 1980, we turn our attention to the week's featured act — politicised post-punks Gang of Four — and thence to the more controversially reactionary Eric Clapton. Clips from John Hutchinson's 1981 audio interview with the guitar "God" prompt conversation about his musical evolution and the infamous 1976 outburst that inspired the launch of Rock Against Racism. After Mark quotes from newly-added library pieces about Joe Harriott (1964), Miles Davis (1969) and Al Green (1973), Jasper takes us out with his thoughts on articles about Courtney Love (1991), Snoop Dogg (2003) and Cardi B (2019). Please note that this episode was recorded before we learned of the very sad passings of former Gang Of Four bassist Dave Allen and Malian superstar Amadou Bagayoko — along with Phil Sutcliffe's fellow Sounds contributor Sandy Robertson. Many thanks to special guest Phil Sutcliffe. Pieces discussed: The Beatles: I Was A Beatlemaniac, Penetration: Anarchy In County Durham, The Bard Of Beasley Street At The Seat Of Learning, Gang of Four: Dialectics Meet Disco, Gang Of Four: The Revolution Lightens Up, Andy Gill meets Andy Gill, Eric Clapton audio, Eric Clapton: Out of the Darkness, Joe Harriott: Jazz Abstractionist, Miles Davis: In a Silent Way, Hole: Calling the Tune, Snoop Dogg and Welcome to the Cardi Party.

Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 41. To Jefferson, the Fantasy genre is a grand cathedral, and he loves the gargoyles who guard its buttresses, anti-heroes like Logen Ninefingers and Tyrion Lannister. But as fun as those characters are, Jefferson believes we're not getting enough stories about the figures still inside the nave, the everyday parishioners, the Samwise Gamgees and Neville Longbottoms of the congregation. We still need stories about ordinary people d The Illustrators of the Future Contest judges include, Bob Eggleton (11 Chesley Awards and 7 Hugo Awards), Larry Elmore (Dungeons & Dragons book covers), Echo Chernik (graphic designs for major corporations including Celestial Seasonings tea packaging), Rob Prior (art for Spawn, Heavy Metal comics and Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Ciruelo (Eragon Coloring Book). Following the 1982 release of his internationally acclaimed bestselling science fiction novel, Battlefield Earth, written in celebration of 50 years as a professional writer, L. Ron Hubbard created the Writers of the Future (writersofthefuture.com) in 1983 to provide a means for aspiring writers of speculative fiction to get that much-needed break. It's Thursday, August 1st, A.D. 2024. This is The World View in 5 Minutes written by Jonathan Clark and heard at www.TheWorldView.com. Filling in for Adam McManus, I'm Ean Leppin. Chinese Christian Reunites with Family A Christian activist from China finally reunited with his family in the US this week. 71-year-old Zhu Yufu had spent sixteen years in prison for defending freedom in China. After his release, he was diagnosed with advanced stomach cancer. The US approved his application for urgent medical treatment and to reunite with his family. Yufu issued a statement through ChinaAid: “Thanks to the Lord's grace and the efforts of all of you, I had the chance to be reunited with my family . . . I pray constantly, believing that the Lord's grace is sufficient and that it will not be Satan or the forces of evil that will dominate everything on earth.” In 2 Corinthians 12:9, the Apostle Paul wrote, “[The Lord] said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” Christian U.K. Teacher Banned for “Misgendering” Students Last week, a High Court judge in the U.K. ruled a Christian teacher should be banned from his profession for allegedly “misgendering” students. Joshua Sutcliffe did not use students' preferred pronouns based on his Christian beliefs. His decision did not break the law. However, the judge ruled Sutcliffe's religious beliefs did not justify his actions. Sutcliffe told GB News he plans to appeal and that this is an important case for the U.K SUTCLIFF: "This I believe is a really important case for our nation because obviously I have quite strong Christian convictions, but this is probably a more universal belief that we shouldn't be leading young people down this dangerous path, and that is what the principle argument in the court was." Another Court Blocks Biden Admin's LGBT Agenda Under the Biden administration, the US Department of Education has tried to extend civil rights protections to people living sexually perverted lifestyles. The new rule would protect so-called “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” in schools. Many states have sued the administration over the new rule. In the latest ruling, a US District Judge issued a preliminary injunction against the administration. It applies in Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The new rule is now blocked in 21 states. California's Attack on Abortion Pill Reversal Services A pregnancy center is fighting California's attacks on Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) services. California Democrat Attorney General Rob Bonta is trying to end APR services and silence pro-life groups. Culture of Life Family Services is now suing Bonta with the help of the Thomas More Society. Peter Breen with the legal group said, “With all of the crime and corruption in California, it is tragic . . . that AG Bonta . . . is using his vast resources to target pregnancy centers and strip women of . . . their right to continue with a pregnancy through the safe and effective Abortion Pill Reversal process.” Americans' Changing Beliefs on Moral Issues Gallup released their latest data on Americans' moral beliefs. Most people in the U.S. still say adultery, suicide, and polygamy are morally wrong. Most Americans now say birth control, in-vitro fertilization, and having a baby outside marriage is morally acceptable. However, Americans are more divided on issues like abortion, doctor-assisted suicide, and “changing one's gender.” Since the early 2000s, support for abortion is up 12 percent, support for divorce is up 19 percent, support for having a baby outside marriage is up 23 percent, and support for sexually perverted lifestyles is up 24 percent. Brazilian Athletes Praise God at the Olympics And finally, Brazilian athletes are winning medals and praising God at the Summer Olympics. 16-year-old Rayssa Leal won bronze in the women's street skateboarding final. Despite Olympic rules against religious demonstrations, she used sign language in front of the cameras to say, “Jesus is the way, the truth and the life,” quoting John 14:6. Meanwhile, Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina beat an Olympic record after riding a perfect 16-foot wave. Knowing his accomplishment, he went airborne at the end of the wave. An iconic photo of the moment shows Medina floating midair with his finger pointed upward. The three-time world champion posted it and quoted Philippians 4:13 which says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Close And that's The World View in 5 Minutes on this Thursday, August 1st, in the year of our Lord 2024. Emerging markets have sometimes promised more than they have delivered, but circumstances may be tipping in growth investors' favour. Will Sutcliffe, head of our Emerging Markets Team, explains why it's an opportune time to invest in the asset class. Background: Will Sutcliffe is the head of Baillie Gifford's Emerging Markets Team and co-manager of our Emerging Markets Leading Companies Fund. In this episode of Short Briefings on Long Term Thinking, he brings his 23 years of experience in the field to explain what makes the specialism different from other types of growth investing. He makes the case that finding exceptional growth companies at attractive valuations is only part of the equation. Investors must be mindful of the broader macroeconomic environment, he explains, to avoid getting caught out by currency swings or spiralling debt costs. This leads him to conclude that recent resilience in emerging market economies could point to a favourable outlook for the asset class's growth stocks. All this only matters to our portfolios if there are exceptional businesses to invest in, and Sutcliffe argues that the emerging markets are home to an increasing number of world-class companies. They range from the Taiwanese chip maker TSMC to the energy, retail and telecoms conglomerate Reliance Industries. Resources: Emerging markets: why bother?Stock story: PinduoduoSouth-east Asia's rising export starsJio Financial ServicesNaturaPDD HoldingsPinduoduoReliance IndustriesTemuTSMCGabriel Garcia Marquez: Until August Timecodes:00:00    Introduction01:45    Joining the Emerging Markets Team03:15    A ‘terrifying' baptism of fire05:00    Emerging markets' ‘dirty little secret'05:45    Qualifying for emerging markets status06:45    Higher-calibre companies08:00    Macroeconomic resilience09:30    US-China tensions and Russia's invasion of Ukraine12:00    Investing in China13:45    PDD Holding's Pinduoduo and Temu

Stu Sutcliffe was rock 'n roll's original Sid Vicious. Just like Sid, Stu was a bass player. But also like Sid, Stu could hardly play. What he did have in spades was style and attitude. He was by far the coolest looking member of the Beatles, back when the Fab Four were still a fab five (minus Ringo). These were the days of the Reeperbahn in Hamburg, Germany, a violent landscape of gangsters, thugs, prostitutes, and vindictive club owners who ran their depraved joints with an iron fist. It was here that the Beatles played marathon sets at some of Hamburg's rowdiest bars. It was where they first popped pills, were arrested for the first time – but also where they learned how to be great, and how to be effortlessly cool. That last one thanks to their bass player Stu Sutcliffe, whose days on this earth were finite, but whose impact would live forever. Peter Sutcliffe, a notorious British murderer famously known as the Yorkshire Ripper, unleashed a reign of terror upon the nation between 1975 and 1980, claiming the lives of at least 13 innocent women and subjecting seven others to brutal assaults. However, his sinister activities can be traced back to 1969, when he committed his earliest known attack. Miraculously, his victim survived but chose not to press charges, unknowingly allowing a monster to roam freely. As Sutcliffe's heinous acts continued, a wave of fear swept through the northern regions of England, leaving communities paralyzed and desperate for justice. The ensuing manhunt spanned years, consuming an astonishing 2.5 million hours of police work. Yet, this pursuit of the Yorkshire Ripper was marred by a series of setbacks and missteps. The investigation was plagued by a lack of regard for Sutcliffe's victims, many of whom were sex workers, and a cruel hoax that cunningly diverted the attention of law enforcement. Finally, in 1981, the long-awaited breakthrough arrived when Sutcliffe was apprehended and ultimately convicted. His capture brought a sense of relief to a nation haunted by his monstrous actions. However, the chilling tale of the Yorkshire Ripper did not fade into obscurity. Over the years, it has continued to captivate the public's imagination, becoming a subject of fascination in true-crime podcasts and even inspiring the creation of the gripping 2020 Netflix documentary, The Ripper.Sadly, the chapter of Peter Sutcliffe's life came to a close in November 2020, as he passed away at the age of 74. Yet, the scars left by his crimes remain etched in the collective memory of a nation, serving as a reminder of the darkness that can lurk within even the most ordinary of individuals.Support The Showhttps://www.patreon.com/paranormalworldproductionsShow Website And Bloghttps://paranormalworldproductions.comAll The Socials And Stuff/Contact Brianhttps://linktr.ee/ParanormalWorldProductionsbrian@paranormalworldproductions.com Follow The Show On Instagram https://www.instagram.com/truecrimeodysseyThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5309458/advertisement
