Shownotes: As a podcast host one of my biggest joys is celebrating incredible people making a difference. People who I know through my work or because of my podcast or from my networks who have raised the bar either in their personal or professional life.My guest on the 129th episode of The Elephant in the Room podcast is Ashima Tyagi, our lives intersected briefly in the late 2000s when we worked in different divisions of one of India's largest PR and PA agency. At the time Ashima was a rookie, getting to grips with operating in male dominated and patriarchal metals and mining industry in India. Fast forward to 2024 when I bumped into her on LinkedIn. I was chuffed to see Ashima Tyagi was Economics Associate Director, at S&P Global Market Intelligence unit in Singapore.I had a lot of questions for her – about the move from Delhi to Singapore, her experience of living and working in a new country and culture away from her family. I was curious to understand how she was navigating work-life balance and what it meant to her, especially considering that we have it drilled into us, that hard work (long hours) and sacrifice is the route to success. We also spoke about her leadership style has evolved over the years, the impact of imposter syndrome, how organizational culture can drag women down or enable them to thrive, her role in WINS S&P Global, networks and networking, her advice to young women joining the industry today, what motivates her and ambition……While Ashima's may not recognize it her move to Singapore was a brave decision at many levels a) She had never moved cities before b) She was leaving behind her husband and one year old son c) Her motivation was personal growth. Not many young women in this part of the world are able to priorities their personal and professional ambitious and it continues to stymie and disadvantage them. So, kudos @Ashima Tyagi, every little step counts……To hear more about Ashima's personal and professional growth head to the podcast (link in comments)

Speaker: Dr Kalpana Tyagi, Assistant Professor, Maastricht UniversityAbstract: Data protection, privacy and copyright may be closely aligned, yet distinctly respond to the common element, that is data – comprising of personal as well as non-personal elements. While data may not be copyright-protected, works (at least in their current form) are copyright-protected. As the Generative AI tools become more advanced, data and copyright-protected works may cease to bear any direct resemblance to pre-existing works. This can be attributed to the rise of synthetic data. While synthetic data may facilitate compliance with the 2016 EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), it also heralds notable challenges for the current IPR (particularly copyright) framework. This interplay between law and technology - in light of its inter- & intra-disciplinary complexity - remains under-explored in the literature. At the CIPIL seminar, Dr. Tyagi presents her research findings on this interplay between copyright (and other IPRs) as well as data protection and privacy in the context of synthetic data and Generative AI.Biography: Kalpana Tyagi is Assistant Professor of Intellectual Property and Competition Law in the European and International Law Department, Maastricht University. She holds a multidisciplinary PhD (summa cum laude) from the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition, Munich where she worked as Max Planck Fellow for Innovation and Competition until 2015. Krishna defines renunciant (tyagi) and says, "Those who neither avoid akushala (disagreeable or miserable) action nor attached to kushala (agreeable or well-being) action are tyagi. Pervaded by purity, being intelligent (methavi) he is free from doubts (sansaya-rahit)" (18.10). We are all motivated to perform kushala karmas (actions) and avoid akusala ones. We tend to do karmas which are for the well-being of the self, family, organization or society. Though this looks logical, it is the result of the division of karmas as akushala and kushala. Tyagi is the one for whom this internal division disappears. Krishna calls them intelligent and in one way, dropping the internal division can be termed as intelligence. Their doubts also disappear when oneness descends with the end of division. As a result, the tyagi neither hates nor gets attached to any actions. Krishna further says, "It is impossible for the embodied beings to give up activities totally. But those who relinquish the fruits of their actions are called tyagi (18.11). The threefold fruits of actions -pleasant, unpleasant, and mixed accrues to non-relinquishers but never to the tyagi here or hereafter" (18.12). The fundamental truth of existence is that it is impossible for the embodied beings to give up activities as our survival itself depends on numerous activities like eating and breathing. Krishna gave the path of relinquishing karmaphal (fruits of action) and He reiterates this on many occasions. What happens if one doesn't detach from Karmaphal? Krishna says threefold karmaphal accrues to those who long for it, maybe after the lapse of time, but not for tyagi. It is our attachment that makes a karmaphal pleasant or unpleasant. Tyagi is the one who drops this attachment and transcends polarities to be dwanda-ateeth (one who transcended dulaties).

Himanshu, a core contributor to Sentient, discusses the vision and mission of the project in this conversation. Sentient aims to create a decentralized alternative to centralized AI, where contributors are rewarded for their contributions and the AI economy is more participatory. The project recently raised $85 million in funding led by Peter Thiel's fund. Himanshu explains that while $85 million may seem like a lot in the crypto world, it is not enough considering the expensive resources required for AI, such as compute and talent. He discusses his background in academia and his journey into building different systems related to blockchain and AI. He also explains how the idea for Sentient came about and the decision to focus on building a counterpart to centralized AI. He emphasizes the importance of participation in the AI economy and the need for a more inclusive and decentralized approach. He addresses the market forces that favor crypto AI, such as the availability of compute and the potential for a more powerful economic flywheel. He also discusses the challenges of attracting AI talent to the crypto space and explains how Sentient aims to build models and create an open economy where anyone can contribute and earn rewards. Sentient aims to solve the monetization problem of open source AI models through their Open Monetizable Loyal (OML) Models and Other Artifacts. OML models are open source, can be monetized, and are loyal to the builder's preferred alignment and safety rules. The OML protocol uses backdoor attacks as a basic primitive to tie ownership and monetization to the actual model. Sentient plans to attract and incentivize AI developers by offering distribution and revenue opportunities for their models. The group pinpointed B2G2 as the most active compound, but, “it's expensive and it takes a long time to isolate B2G2 from grape seed extract,” Tyagi says. This expense related to the isolation of B2G2 has limited the group's further exploration. So instead of purifying B2G2 from GSE, the group decided to synthesize it in the lab. The current study reports the success of this effort, including the ability to synthesize gram-quantity of B2G2 reasonably quickly and inexpensively. In the paper's second half, the group shows anti-cancer activity of synthesized B2G2 similar in mechanism and degree to overall GSE effectiveness. Improving Memory Naturally: Sage Contains Similar Compounds as Modern Alzheimer's Drugs Newcastle and Northumbria Universities, June 14 2022 Sage was named “Herb of the Year” in 2001 by the International Herb Association.  Some of the latest research shows how sage can boost memory and cognitive health. The leaves and stems of sage contain these antioxidant enzymes that protect against free radical oxidative cell damage as well as provide inflammatory relief from ailments such as arthritis and asthma. The Medicinal Plant Research Centre (MPRC) of England conducted studies at Newcastle and Northumbria Universities with sage oil herb pills against placebo pills. Those who took the sage performed much better with a word recall test than those who took the placebo.  In the long run, home-made tinctures are the most economical way to have and use highly effective tinctures for a long time.  Trade the chair for fresh air: Study explores link between sitting time and cardio health Simon Fraser University (Canada), June 15 2022 New research is adding further weight to the argument that prolonged sitting may be hazardous to your health. An international study surveying more than 100,000 individuals in 21 countries found that people who sat for six to eight hours a day had a 12–13 percent increased risk for early death and heart disease, while those who sat for more than eight hours daily increased that to a sobering 20 percent. Their research followed individuals over an average of 11 years and determined that high amounts of sitting time were associated with increased risk of early death and cardiovascular disease.  Not surprising, those who sat the most and were the least active had the highest risk—up to 50 percent—while those who sat the most but were also the most active had a substantially lower risk of about 17 percent. “For those sitting more than four hours a day, replacing a half hour of sitting with exercise reduced the risk by two percent,” Lear notes. “With only one in four Canadians meeting the activity guidelines there's a real opportunity here for people to increase their activity and reduce their chances of early death and heart disease.” Acupuncture Can Treat Alzheimer's Disease Hubei University of Chinese Medicine (China), June 5, 2022  An increasing number of clinical and animal studies have confirmed that acupuncture is effective for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Moxibustion is reported to be more effective than electro-acupuncture for improving space-recognizing memory ability in aged mice, suggesting that moxibustion is another alternative or complementary therapy used to treat Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Yanjun Du and team from Hubei University of Chinese Medicine, China only used suspended moxibustion (also named warming moxibustion, scarring moxibustion, or herb-partition moxibustion) on Baihui and Shenshu  acupoints to observe the action of pre-moxibustion on preventing apoptosis in a rat model of Alzheimer's disease. The pre-moxibustion group was treated with moxibustion for eight courses (each course lasting for 6 days) prior to the exposure and 14 days after Aβ1–42 exposure.  Moxibustion prior to Aβ1–42 exposure was more effective than moxibustion after Aβ1–42 exposure in protecting the neuronal structure and lowering the apoptosis rate. Their findings indicate that a combination of preventive and therapeutic moxibustion has a beneficial effect for the prevention of Alzheimer's disease development. Men and women with brain condition could be helped by vitamin E Cangzhou Central Hospital (China), June 15 2022.  Leukoaraiosis is an abnormality in the brain's white matter that appears on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as white matter hyperintensities. In an article published in the International Journal of Neuroscience, researchers at Cangzhou Central Hospital in Hebei, China reported improvements in factors related to leukoaraiosis among adults given supplements containing vitamin E. “Leukoaraiosis (LA) is a disease manifested by demyelination and gliosis in white matter, mainly caused by cerebrovascular diseases,” Yan Wang and colleagues wrote.  “Leukoaraiosis is closely related to the expression level of inflammatory factors, oxidative stress, and vascular endothelial dysfunction in patients. Vitamin E may play antioxidant and anti-inflammatory roles in various diseases.” Participants received 200 IU, 400 IU or 600 international units (IU) vitamin E or a placebo daily for 12 weeks. At the end of the treatment period, blood samples were evaluated for the inflammatory factors C-reactive protein, complement C3 and C4, and matrix metalloproteins 2 and 9, as well as for markers of oxidative stress and endothelial function (function of the lining of the arteries, which is impaired in cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease). Inflammation, oxidative stress and endothelial function improved in all groups that received vitamin E in comparison with the placebo. Cognitive function scores also significantly improved in the vitamin E-treated groups. Improvement in all measured factors was correlated with higher doses of vitamin E. Chlorogenic acid plus chromium improves insulin resistance and lowers obesity in mice University of Toledo, June 10 2022 In an article published in Nutrition & Metabolism, University of Toledo researchers report that a combination of chromium and chlorogenic acid (CGA), a polyphenol occurring in coffee, reversed the development of obesity and insulin resistance in mice caused by the intake of a high-fat diet. Sonia M. Najjar and her associates fed male BL6 mice a standard diet or a high-fat diet for seven weeks. During the last three weeks of the diet, the high-fat group received a daily oral supplement containing water, chlorogenic acid, or a combination of chlorogenic acid and chromium in a base that contained caffeine. Body weight was measured weekly, insulin tolerance was assessed at four and seven weeks, and glucose and glucose tolerance were assessed at the end of the treatment period. At four weeks, animals supplemented with chlorogenic acid and the combination of chlorogenic acid and chromium experienced weight loss within two weeks, and attained weights comparable to those of animals that received a standard diet. While insulin resistance after four weeks was greater among high-fat diet-fed mice compared to those fed a standard diet, supplementation with chlorogenic acid plus chromium reduced this effect, and restored it to a level comparable to that of standard-diet-fed mice. Glucose tolerance and glucose levels were similarly restored in animals that received the supplement combination.

S A U N A I E Presents the 50 30 20 RULE HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR HOST XO Quotes: Look Back At How Far You've Come. 2nd: If You Live to Please Others, Everyone will Love You Except Yourself. S E G M E N T S: 50 30 20 RULE Fun Fact: Senator Elizabeth Warren popularized the so-called "50/20/30 budget rule" (sometimes labeled "50-30-20") in her book, All Your Worth: The Ultimate Lifetime Money Plan. The basic rule is to divide up after-tax income and allocate it to spend: 50% on needs, 30% on wants, and putting away 20% for savings. Referencing over 20 years of research, Warren and Tyagi conclude that you don't need a complicated budget to get your finances in check. All you need to do is balance your money across your needs, wants and savings goals by using the 50/30/20 rule. 50%: Needs Needs are those bills that you absolutely must pay and are the things necessary for survival. These include rent or mortgage payments, car payments, groceries, insurance, health care, minimum debt payment, and utilities. These are your "must-haves." The "needs" category does not include items that are extras, such as HBO, Netflix, Starbucks, and dining out. 30% ON WANTS Wants are all the things you spend money on that are not absolutely essential. This includes dinner, going to the movies, that new handbag, tickets to sporting events, vacations, the latest electronics, and ultra-high-speed Internet. Anything in the "wants" bucket is optional if you boil it down. You can work out at home instead of going to the gym, cook instead of eating out, or watch sports on TV instead of getting tickets to the game. 20%: Savings Finally, try to allocate 20% of your net income to savings and investments. This includes adding money to an emergency fund in a bank savings account, making IRA contributions to a mutual fund account, and investing in the stock market. You should have at least three months of emergency savings on hand in case you lose your job or an unforeseen event occurs. After that, focus on retirement and meeting other financial goals down the road.
