Zach returns from Italy with a sobering reminder from Rome's ruins that every earthly kingdom eventually falls, but the kingdom of God keeps moving forward. Jase, Al, and Zach dig into how trials expose what comfort hides, and what it means to have a double-minded soul. Jase helps Zach's son, Bear, through a panicky faith moment, and it ends up being an awesome reminder of the courage young Christians need in today's world. Construction on the Bus Rapid Transit project on Colfax has officially moved into Aurora, and the end is in sight! So, we are looking ahead to the BRT line planned for Federal Boulevard, where the recent news of the proposed redevelopment of the Asia Center strip mall sparked a wave of concerns about, among other things, the impact of construction on small businesses. Host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi talk about how the community outreach is going on Federal, then dig into the data showing the effects of construction on Colfax businesses so far. Plus, a listener comment about Little Man Ice Cream's big news. Paul mentioned the Colorado Boulevard BRT open house planned for May 13 at Clayton Early Learning Center and referenced this Denver7 report on the Colfax BRT project breaking ground in Aurora. Bree mentioned Katrina Nguyen's post about the Asia Center redesign renderings and the Federal Boulevard BRT pop-up at Mi Casa Resource Center on May 9. Just yesterday I was speaking with a dear client about the fear a woman feels as she gets older. The idea that we'll arrive at a certain age, feeling full of regret over not having done enough, saved enough, risked enough, or made enough of our lives. So this fear runs us, prodding us from behind like a pitchfork, pushing us further away from ourselves and our deeper, truer desires. But then something happens when we enter mid-life.The rushing outwards starts to spiral back inwards. And while not always the case, we tend to arrive at the fearsome place feeling like we've arrived right on time, and in style. Now all of this sounds great, until you start calling a woman a crone.

The Most Hated Man in Town Had a Life-Changing Encounter With Jesus. He was short. He was rich. He was despised. And he was willing to look foolish just to catch a glimpse of Jesus. In this encouraging message from Luke 19, we meet Zacchaeus — the chief tax collector who climbed a sycamore tree to see Jesus… and ended up encountering him in a way that changed everything. Unlike every other rich man we've seen in the Gospel of Luke... this one walked away transformed. It is a powerful picture of how Jesus seeks and saves the lost… even the ones everyone else has written off. If you've ever felt like you need to "clean up your house" before God can visit, this sermon is for you. Jesus doesn't wait for you to be perfect; He comes to save the lost exactly where they are. This is part of our ongoing series The Way of Jesus, walking through the Gospel of Luke. Week after week we've seen wealth blind people to their need for God. This week, for the first time, we see it go the other way — and it is one of the most encouraging stories in all of Scripture. Scripture List: Luke 19.1-10

Why This Confusion in the Temple - Chapter 9.What Now, Little Man?There are many Masons now who believe that the fraternity should take a stand on current political positions. This is nothing new, as I have heard this said at the lodge from time to time. It wasn't until COVID that all Masons were introduced to this idea, but now on a worldwide scale, and Masons were split on how Freemasonry should handle this emergency. Dwight L. Smith clearly explained the drawbacks of the lodge taking a political stance in situations like this and how this is against all masonic principles. What should Masons do?Why should we take a stance and be vocal about it?Where does a Mason's duty to civil society begin and end?

In this episode I share an audio recording from the MMIP Conference held in Sacramento, California on February 3.This conversation features Florence Wright, the mother of James “Little Man” Wright, and his Aunt Ginger, as they speak about James's life, his disappearance, and the nearly four decades of unanswered questions their family continues to live with.James “Little Man” Wright was an enrolled member of the Pit River Tribe. Born on August 2, 1969, he was raised in Redding, California. On or around November 23, 1988, at just 19 years old, James left a family member's home to ride his bicycle to a nearby store and he never returned. His case remains open and unresolved. In her own words, Florence shares the pain of a mother who never stopped searching, the challenges of navigating law enforcement in an unresolved case, and the importance of MMIP advocacy in keeping Indigenous lives from being forgotten. This episode is shared to honor James Wright, uplift his family's voice, and remind listeners that missing Indigenous people are not statistics, they are loved, and they matter.

Baldwin was key figure in the American civil rights movement of the last 1960s, and he is one of our most important American writers. Author of the novels If Beale Street Could Talk, Go Tell It on the Mountain, and Giovanni's Room, he was also an essayist, poet, and playwright. Baldwin's influence continues to grow, but even if you've never read a word James Baldwin has written – first, you should – you will find something to treasure in this conversation. Boggs's biography centers on the artistic and intimate relationships that informed Baldwin's life and work. Douglas Brinkley, author of Rosa Parks: A Life, said “Nicholas Boggs's meticulously researched and passionately written Baldwin is the crown jewel of the ongoing James Baldwin revival. … this epic biography captures Baldwin in full.” Our interviewer is Mitchell S. Jackson, author of The Residue Years, Survival Math, and a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist. Jackson is one of the best interviewers — I genuinely think he should have his own talk show — and he brings so much care and curiosity to the conversation. We start with a passage from the audiobook, which is published by Macmillan Audio and read by Ron Butler. Nicholas Boggs is a writer and independent scholar, born and raised in Washington, DC, now living in Brooklyn, New York. He rediscovered and coedited a new edition of James Baldwin's out-of-print collaboration with the French artist Yoran Cazac, Little Man, Little Man: A Story of Childhood (2018), and his writing has been anthologized in The Cambridge Companion to James Baldwin. He received his BA in English from Yale, his MFA in creative writing from American University, and his PhD in English from Columbia. Baldwin: A Love Story is Nicholas Boggs’ debut novel. Mitchell S. Jackson is the winner of the 2021 Pulitzer Prize in Feature Writing and the 2021 National Magazine Award in Feature Writing. Jackson is the critically acclaimed author of The Residue Years, Survival Math: Notes on an All-American Family, Fly: The Big Book of Basketball Fashion, and John of Watts (to be published soon). His writing has been featured on the cover of the New York Times Book Review, Time, Esquire, and Marie Claire, as well as in The New Yorker, Harpers, The New York Times, and elsewhere. Jackson's nonfiction book Survival Math was published in 2019 and named a best book of the year by fifteen publications, including NPR, Time, The Paris Review, The Root, Kirkus Reviews, and Buzzfeed. Jackson is a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine, covers race and culture as the first Black columnist in the history of Esquire, and serves as the John O. Whiteman Dean's Distinguished Professor in the English Department of Arizona State University.

The Author Events Series presents Nicholas Boggs | Baldwin: A Love Story In Conversation with Rachel L. Swarns Baldwin: A Love Story, the first major biography of James Baldwin in three decades, reveals how profoundly the writer's personal relationships shaped his life and work. Drawing on newly uncovered archival material and original research and interviews, this spellbinding book tells the overlapping stories of Baldwin's most sustaining intimate and artistic relationships: with his mentor, the Black American painter Beauford Delaney; with his lover and muse, the Swiss painter Lucien Happersberger; and with his collaborators, the famed Turkish actor Engin Cezzar and the iconoclastic French artist Yoran Cazac, whose long-overlooked significance as Baldwin's last great love is explored in these pages for the first time. Nicholas Boggs shows how Baldwin drew on all the complex forces within these relationships-geographical, cultural, political, artistic, and erotic- and alchemized them into novels, essays, and plays that speak truth to power and had an indelible impact on the civil rights movement and on Black and queer literary history. Richly immersive, Baldwin: A Love Story follows the writer's creative journey between Harlem, Paris, Switzerland, the southern United States, Istanbul, Africa, the South of France, and beyond. In so doing, it magnifies our understanding of the public and private lives of one of the major literary figures of the twentieth century, whose contributions only continue to grow in influence. Nicholas Boggs was an undergraduate when he discovered James Baldwin's out-of-print children's book, Little Man, Little Man: A Story of Childhood, in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. After he tracked down its illustrator, the French artist Yoran Cazac, he went on to coedit an acclaimed new edition of the book in 2018. His writing has also been anthologized in The Cambridge Companion to James Baldwin, James Baldwin Now, and Speculative Light: The Arts of Beauford Delaney and James Baldwin. He is the recipient of a 2023 Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Leon Levy Center for Biography, the Beinecke Library and Gilder Lehrman Center at Yale, the Schomburg Center Scholars-in-Residence Program, and the National Humanities Center, as well as residencies at Yaddo and MacDowell. He received his BA in English from Yale, his MFA in creative writing from American University, and his PhD in English from Columbia. Born and raised in Washington, DC, he lives in Brooklyn, New York. Rachel L. Swarns is a journalist, author and associate professor of journalism at New York University, who writes about race and history as a contributing writer for The New York Times. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Society of American Historians and her work has been recognized and supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Ford Foundation, the Leon Levy Center for Biography, the Biographers International Organization and others. Her latest book, The 272: The Families Who Were Enslaved and Sold to Build the American Catholic Church, was published by Random House. This time crossbow broadheads, but also broadheads in general. It's a long word to type, “broadheads”. Lot's of letters in there. Let's call them bh for now. Crossbow BHs are ostensibly rated for higher speeds and force to deal with the speeeeeeeed the speeeeeeeeed. Lot's of nonsense on the internet about needing solid steel ferrules and not aluminum ones but that shit is in the bolt/arrow, not the broadhead. I suppose there's only one way to test this, which is to shoot some into a target and see what happens. Short story is I got an open box deal on bolts, and I want to marry those bolts to cheaper broadheads and continue the beaver harpooning. Could just toughen up and zero the .308 but the nice part about the crossbow is I can zero it right there next to the truck and get going without the additional time to get to the rifle range. Also because it's cool. Thoughts on going commie and trying out $2 CHYNA broadheads for live and laughing and funning. Are the paths of Wiltshire stalked by a pagan deity in disguise? Usually on Loremen we recount tales that are seldom told, but this week is different. The legend of the Peaked Red One was, in fact, told by James and Alasdair at the Strange Days Festival of Forteana. But the sound quality was a bit bobbins, so we told our stories again, and here they are! There's ghosts, treasure and a little man with a pet trout. See the Loremen LIVE in London on Oct 15th. In our latest episode, we explore the enchanting world of fairies and nature spirits with my friend Sally, who shares her captivating stories of profound experiences on Dartmoor. As she recounts her journey, listeners are invited to discover the mystical connections between humanity and the little beings that inhabit our natural world.Sally, an experienced dowser, now in her 80s, has believed in fairies throughout her life. She recalls sensing their presence at the bottom of her garden and describes how humanity has, in many ways, driven these magical creatures underground. Throughout the episode, Sally shares remarkable experiences, including moments of deep emotional healing facilitated by the fairies and nature spirits around her.One particularly moving story involves a moment by the river on Dartmoor, where Sally describes being invited to sit on a granite chair that seemed to appear just for her. As she closed her eyes, she began to see tiny beings flitting around her, working to untangle fine threads in her aura and restoring her emotional balance. This experience left her feeling deeply honoured and grateful, highlighting the profound impact nature can have on our well-being. Check out episode 1 - Rhythm of the Universe where I share my guest Stevie's encounter with a Rose fairy who offered healing via fine, spider web-like, tendrils. Sally could never find the stone chair again, which led her to question whether she had momentarily been transported into an alternative reality – listen to Ep 36, Whisked Away by the Fae – where my guest Emma shares her experience of stumbling into a strange place that she could never locate afterwards, despite searching. We discuss the importance of respecting and honouring these nature spirits. Behind every physical manifestation lies a spirit, and the fairy realm plays a vital role in this interconnected web of life. Sally emphasises that we often forget to show gratitude to these beings, who contribute to our healing and our connection to the earth.Listeners will be captivated by Sally's tales of communicating with trees and exploring the subtle realms of nature. She shares her experiences of dowsing and how it has helped her connect with Earth's energies, leading to a deeper understanding of the world around her. The episode serves as a poignant reminder of the magic present in our everyday lives, encouraging us to slow down, listen, and appreciate the beauty of nature.Join us for this magical episode, which celebrates the connection between humanity and the fairy realm. Whether you're a believer in the little beings or simply curious about the spiritual aspects of nature, this conversation will inspire you to explore the magic that surrounds us. Tune in and allow yourself to be transported to the enchanting world of Dartmoor, where fairies and nature spirits await.Show notes: www.thefairywhispering.comContact the podcast with your story: clairefairywhisperer@gmail.com

This week we're discussing every album by the completely insane Cardiacs. If you aren't familiar with this band, then you're going to need to take a seat and prepare yourself. Led by the late Tim Smith and his brother Jim, Cardiacs are a prog band like no other in existence. You just have to hear them. Their final album, LSD, was just released after almost 20 years of painstaking writing, recording, and devastating health problems. This is one of our most requested bands and one that will stay with us for years to come. Biographer Nicholas Boggs joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to discuss his groundbreaking new book, Baldwin: A Love Story, the first major biography of James Baldwin to be published in three decades. Boggs recalls how finding Baldwin's only children's book in a Yale library as a college student led him to track down the volume's illustrator, the French artist Yoran Cazac, Baldwin's last great love. He talks about interviewing people who had never previously spoken about their relationships with the iconic author, including Cazac, whom at least one previous biographer had wrongly guessed was deceased. Boggs reflects on the importance of considering Blackness, queerness, and chosen family as central to Baldwin's life and art. He discusses Baldwin's youth in Harlem, his years in Europe and Istanbul, and his relationships with the painters Beauford Delaney and Lucien Happersberger, the actor Engin Cezzar, and Cazac, as well as many others. Boggs considers how Baldwin's deepest friendships and romances influenced his life and work, including Another Country, Go Tell It on the Mountain, Notes of a Native Son, and Giovanni's Room. He reads from the book. To hear the full episode, subscribe through iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify, or your favorite podcast app (include the forward slashes when searching). Mayor Mike Johnston is asking voters to approve a massive new bond this November, and we finally have a pretty good idea of which projects will be included. So why is one councilmember “incredibly angry”? Host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi talk through which projects made the cut, which neighborhoods are getting ignored, and why City Council is divided. Plus, have you been to the Little Man Ice Cream in Highland lately? There's a really nasty smell around that famous milk jug, and we figured out what it is. Plus, a listener comment on our coverage of the Venezuelan gang “takeover” story. Paul talked about the 303 Artway and Pete's University Park Cafe. Here are some more helpful takeaways about the proposed bond package from Denverite. Have you been to the Little Man in Highland lately? We want to know what you think of that smell!
