I know, I know…so many things we have to do. Dishes, laundry, run the kids around, stay on top of work and all. the. things. Who has time for exercise? YOU DO, and in this interview with Courtney Wyckoff from Momma Strong we talk about WHY exercise is so important, and HOW you can make time for it. You are going to LOVE the refreshing approach Courtney takes to fitness and exercise. If you are discouraged or exhausted or totally turned off by the way the fitness industry so often leaves you feeling like you'll never measure up, you are going to love Courtney's refreshing approach. Almost in an act of rebellion, Courtney redefines the purpose of exercise as conditioning your body so you can show up in your life with confidence, and have the strength and desire to do all the things that make you feel alive - whether that is doing a cartwheel, hiking a mountain, or getting off the lounge chair and actually swimming with your kids. It's not about how you look, it's about the way you feel - and Momma Strong's customized workouts promote the kind of health that doesn't fade as you age. The Dad Bod: Is it a myth? A legend? A joke? Does it happen to all dads? How can we avoid it? Or better yet, how can we effectively combat if we choose to? Modern Dadhood welcomes its first female guest, Courtney Wyckoff, to the conversation. Courtney’s success as a Certified Personal Trainer and the creator of MommaStrong/PappaStrong gives her unique insight into some of the real underlying issues that spawn postpartum changes in dads’ bodies. Spoiler alert: it’s more than just having a “beer gut.” Plus, we survey our favorite fatherhood Facebook group to hear first hand what factors led to their dad bods. Episode 28 of Modern Dadhood wastes no time getting into the theme of the conversation: the common shift in male physique that occurs in the months or years after becoming a father—a phenomenon widely known as the “dad bod.” Adam and Marc explore definitions of the slang phrase while swapping stories of their own challenges making health a priority upon becoming fathers. Adam welcomes the first woman (and mom) to the podcast; the phenomenal Courtney Wyckoff, creator of the MammaStrong and PappaStrong exercise programs, mom of three, and total badass. Courtney challenges the idea that the “dad bod” is just about allowing ourselves to eat too much junk or drink too much beer, but rather that there are physical, mental, and emotional stressors that come with fatherhood which can manifest physically—and that returning to exercise, even in 15 minute-per-day increments, can help facilitate a return to strength and health. Other conversation topics include:• Body image in men vs. women• Redefining what it means to be “strong”• Common structural issues in men• Anchor points of the body• Do men have a “pelvic floor?”• The secret to habit building• Finding the motivation to start• Ignoring the “bully voice” in your head The guys check in with their favorite fatherhood-themed Facebook group to take a poll on the driving factors of their change in physique. Unsurprisingly, the most cited reasons centered around time management and food consumption. Biz and Theresa wonder how long we should let something go on that our kids are doing. It's easy enough to say “okay” to our child’s collection of rocks, but when are there too many rocks? At what point do we draw the line? Do we worry that peers will think our kids are weird or is it just about our personal comfort level? Plus Biz thinks some games are weird, Theresa takes a break and we welcome back Courtney Wyckoff, founder of MommaStrong. This week Steph and Abby are thrilled to welcome guru and founder of MommaStrong, Courtney Wyckoff. Courtney single-handedly developed MommaStrong as a result of being completely lost in postpartum haze and severe depression following the birth of her second child (sounds about right!). What came out of her own personal need is something that has resonated with thousands of other mommas, new mommas, and soon-to-be-mommas: a strength-training, community-oriented, wellness-focused, and all-out amazing fitness program! Her story is legit inspiring and she also curses. We love her. Pssst: Dads! She also has a PapaStrong program, so have no fear. You are loved and valued, too.

In this epsiode we were THRILLED to chat with Mommastrong Founder Courtney Wyckoff. We have a real conversation about what it means to make motherhood visible, and building communities of moms in our overly individualistic society. “I want to be in a position where the difficulty of motherhood is normal and expected and is also supported” - Courtney Wyckoff
Biz and Theresa demand to know why our kids don’t like some stuff that ALL OTHER kids seem to like. Not liking pizza or coloring books seems like breaking some sort of child law and it seems particularly criminal when the things they don’t like would make it easier for the parent if they just liked it! Plus Biz is at her breaking point and naming every person in a book or car on the road for her toddler isn’t helping, Theresa has an unfortunate wildlife adventure and Courtney Wyckoff of Momma Strong comes back to talk postpartum peeing and issue us a pelvic floor challenge! Biz and Theresa admit there are some (ok, MANY) times when we behave almost exactly like our toddlers. Shouldn't we have more patience for their shenanigans when the reality is we totally "get" why they're acting out most of the time because we'd like to stomp our feet and throw things, too? Plus, Biz gets through a challenging experience with her kids and Theresa is confused because things seem to go smoothly for a whole f*cking hour! And we're joined by Courtney Wyckoff, creator of MommaStrong.com, an online strength conditioning resource for all phases of motherhood and all fitness levels, and she is so insightful and inspiring that we totally fall in love with her.
