Have you ever found yourself thinking, "I just need a jumpstart," or "If the scale would move, I'd feel more motivated"? On the surface, that sounds completely reasonable. Of course you want to see that your effort is working. But most of the time, there's something deeper happening underneath that thought. In this episode, I unpack what "I just need to see results" usually really means in weight loss. I show you how to stay steady when things feel uncertain, and build something that actually holds up when real life shows up. Tune in this week to learn how to shift from chasing early wins to building real self-trust. I walk you through the difference between outcome-based motivation and follow-through-based confidence, why so many people abandon plans not because they failed, but because the reassurance faded, and how redefining what counts as progress can change your entire experience with weight loss. Send a textWelcome back to Weight Loss Wednesday. In episode 160, I'm answering your questions about consistency with accountability, calorie perspective, low TDEE fears, sweeteners, managing sweets and chips as a diabetic, and flavour drops for water. This episode is practical, direct, and a reminder that weight loss works best when you build it in a way that actually fits your real life. What I cover in this episode:• Why accountability starts with awareness and acknowledgement, not willpower• The 3A Way framework and how skipping the middle step sabotages consistency• Why you cannot successfully hold yourself accountable to something you refuse to fully admit is happening• How to make accountability easier• Why consistency is incremental and does not require perfection• Why calories are relative• How your starting point changes what “high” or “low” calorie really means• Concerns about having a low TDEE and fearing extremely low maintenance calories at goal weight• The difference between deficit calories and maintenance calories• Why setting your app to lose two pounds per week may be cutting your calories too aggressively• How to use a TDEE calculator to project realistic maintenance numbers• My honest thoughts on sweeteners and why I consider them a useful tool• The reality behind the aspartame fear headlines• How I manage sweets and chips as a diabetic without eliminating them• Why I don't eat from the bag and how being selective helps control both calories and blood sugar• My take on water flavour drops and why they are not “cheating”This episode is a reminder that accountability is built, not flipped on like a switch, that calories are contextual, that tools are meant to be used and that consistency is not about being perfect, it is about continuing. If you have a question you'd like answered on a future Weight Loss Wednesday, please send it in. Everyone seems more stressed than ever — and oddly, some people even wear it like a badge of honor. But chronic stress isn't something to brag about. It quietly alters the way you think. It amplifies worry, exaggerates threats, narrows your options, and makes worst-case scenarios feel not just possible, but probable. Over time, stress doesn't just affect your mood — it reshapes your perception, your judgment, and the decisions you make. And because the shift happens gradually, you often don't realize it's happening at all. Clinical psychologist Arthur Ciaramicoli has spent decades studying stress and its impact on the brain and behavior. In this conversation, he explains what's actually happening neurologically when stress rises — how your brain shifts into a more reactive mode, why you become more negative and less flexible in your thinking, and how chronic stress can trap you in a self-reinforcing loop. We also explore why modern life seems perfectly designed to keep stress levels elevated and why simply “relaxing” isn't a realistic solution. Most importantly, Arthur shares practical, science-based strategies to interrupt the cycle — techniques you can use in the moment to calm your nervous system, widen your perspective, and prevent stress from distorting your thinking. If you've ever made a decision under pressure and later wondered, “What was I thinking?” — this episode will help you understand exactly what was happening and how to prevent it next time. In this episode of the Integrative Health Podcast, Dr. Jen sits down with Dr. Sundeep Dugar—renowned medicinal chemist, co-inventor of the drug Zetia, and industry pioneer with over 40 years of experience—to explore the foundational role of mitochondrial health in aging, hormones, and energy.Dr. Dugar shares why he transitioned from Big Pharma into the nutraceutical space, explaining that while pharmaceutical drugs often target isolated diseases, mitochondria are central to nearly every aspect of human health. Because mitochondrial dysfunction underlies conditions ranging from fatigue to muscle loss, brain fog, and chronic disease, supporting mitochondria offers broad, system-wide benefits. The conversation dives deeply into why mitochondrial health is especially critical for women. Dr. Jen and Dr. Dugar explain how mitochondria are inherited exclusively from the mother and play a central role in hormone production, including estrogen. During perimenopause, declining estrogen levels impair mitochondrial biogenesis, creating a “bioenergetic deficit” that drives hallmark aging symptoms such as fatigue, cognitive decline, and muscle loss.Dr. Dugar introduces epicatechin—a specific flavonol derived from green tea and cacao—and explains how it acts as an “exercise mimetic,” signaling the body to create new mitochondria. He clarifies how epicatechin differs from common green tea extracts like EGCG, outlines proper dosing, and discusses why more is not better. They also cover the broader implications of mitochondrial health for bone density, muscle preservation, organ failure, sleep quality, and the risks associated with rapid weight loss from GLP-1 medications.Dr. Jen speaks with medicinal chemist Dr. Sundeep Dugar about mitochondrial health, estrogen decline, epicatechin from green tea, perimenopause, muscle loss, and healthy aging.Dr. Sundeep Dugar is a renowned medicinal chemist with over 40 years of experience in drug discovery and development. He is the co-inventor of Zetia and has worked extensively in cardiovascular, metabolic, and mitochondrial research. Dr. Dugar now focuses on translating cutting-edge science into safe, effective nutraceuticals that support foundational cellular health.Website: https://www.thrombio.com.au/leadership/sundeep-dugar Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sundeepdugar/PODCAST: Thank you for listening please subscribe and share! Welcome to Ozempic Weightloss Unlocked, where we dive into the latest news on Ozempic from medical breakthroughs to real-life health impacts.Recent Cochrane reviews commissioned by the World Health Organization show that Ozempic, or semaglutide, leads to about eleven percent average weight loss after six to eighteen months in people with obesity, outperforming placebo in eighteen trials with nearly twenty-eight thousand participants. Tirzepatide, like Mounjaro, achieves even more at sixteen percent, while liraglutide offers four to five percent. These glucagon-like peptide-one drugs mimic a hormone that slows digestion and boosts fullness, originally for type two diabetes but now key for weight management with diet and exercise.Cochrane researchers note benefits persist during treatment but highlight gaps: most trials were industry-funded, long-term safety data is limited, and side effects like nausea affect many, with some dropping out. No clear edge on heart events or death versus placebo yet.A Rutgers Health study in the Journal of Medical Internet Research analyzed sixty online reviews and found sixty-seven percent of users report weight loss, less appetite, or fewer cravings, making them stick with it despite nausea or vomiting in sixty-two percent. Lead author Abanoub Armanious says everyday experiences show benefits often outweigh gut issues for motivated users. Bariatric expert Mir Ali adds diarrhea or pain prompts more quits than nausea.Newer buzz includes Ozempic face: rapid fat loss causes gaunt cheeks, per a Gujranwala Medical College analysis and American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery survey, boosting filler demand by fifty percent. Weight regain post-treatment is common, stressing lifestyle pairing.Wegovy now offers semaglutide pills like Rybelsus, matching injections for seventeen percent loss with changes, per Prisma Health's Eva Wolf.Listeners, blend these tools with habits for lasting wins. What if your weight loss resistance in your 40s isn't about willpower, but a powerful hormone shift that changes your metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and fat storage? In this episode of the Metabolic Freedom Podcast, Ben Azadi welcomes back hormone expert Karen Martel to unpack why weight loss resistance is often a biological signal, not a motivation problem. Karen explains how hormone disruption from environmental xenoestrogens can create estrogen dominant symptoms in younger women, even when bloodwork appears normal. The conversation then shifts into perimenopause and menopause, where the real metabolic shift begins. As estradiol declines, women often experience increased belly fat, worsening cholesterol, rising blood sugar, poor sleep, mood changes, and accelerated aging of skin and muscle. Karen breaks down the critical difference between estrogen and estradiol, why metabolic health often declines after ovarian function changes, and why many traditional weight loss strategies stop working during this phase. You'll also learn how environmental toxins impact hormone receptors, why hormone metabolite testing like the DUTCH test can provide deeper insight, and how bioidentical hormone replacement therapy may support long-term metabolic and overall health when used appropriately. If you or someone you love is entering their 40s and struggling despite healthy habits, this episode highlights a major missing piece. Key Topics Covered Why weight loss resistance is often hormonal rather than a willpower issue How hormone patterns differ between fertile years, perimenopause, and menopause What xenoestrogens are and how they mimic estrogen in the body Common sources of hormone disruptors: plastics, fragrances, pesticides, cleaning products, and receipts Why bloodwork may look normal while symptoms of estrogen dominance still exist Daily detox strategies to support hormone balance, including minerals and sauna use How hormone dynamics shift in the 40s as estradiol begins to decline The difference between estrogen and estradiol and their impact on metabolism Why fasting harder and eating less can backfire during perimenopause How estradiol loss affects insulin sensitivity, visceral fat, cholesterol, mood, libido, and collagen The Women's Health Initiative misconception and the role of synthetic progestins How urine hormone metabolite testing (DUTCH) helps personalize hormone support Why individualized care is essential when considering hormone replacement therapy Karen's personal experience with rapid menopause symptoms and recovery The role of gratitude and mindset in long-term health and resilience Resources & Links Mentioned Karen MartelWebsite: https://karenmartel.comPodcast: The Hormone Solution Podcast YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@karenmartelhormones/videos Special OfferCoupon code: FREEDOMDiscount: 15% off at https://karenmartel.com Follow Ben Azadi

In this episode of Your Checkup, we explore a new study from the Mayo Clinic examining whether menopause hormone therapy enhances weight loss outcomes in postmenopausal women taking tirzepatide. Menopause is a major metabolic turning point — with rising visceral fat, declining muscle mass, and increasing cardiovascular risk. Researchers found that women using hormone therapy while on tirzepatide lost significantly more weight — nearly 5% more total body weight — and experienced additional cardiometabolic improvements compared to women not using hormones. We break down what this means, why estrogen may play a synergistic role, what the study does not prove, and how to think about personalized obesity treatment during midlife. In this insightful conversation, endocrinologist Dr Rocio Salas-Whalen joins Bahar to demystify the science and emotional journey behind GLP-1 medications. They explore how these drugs—originally developed for diabetes—have become a cornerstone of modern metabolic and hormonal health. From microdosing pitfalls to the importance of muscle preservation, protein intake, and hydration, Dr Salas-Whalen explains why these medications can be transformative when used responsibly under medical supervision. The discussion also touches on the psychological side of weight loss, the future of obesity treatment, and how GLP-1 might even influence brain health and addiction recovery. Dr Salas-Whalen’s new book Weightless offers practical guidance for women navigating midlife metabolism with compassion and science. Key Takeaways GLP-1 medications were discovered in 2005 and have redefined metabolic health. Chronic inflammation is a central issue in obesity and ageing. Microdosing doesn’t work—therapeutic dosing under expert care is essential. Muscle mass is the engine of metabolism and longevity. 100–110 grams of protein per day supports muscle, bone, and skin health. Hydration is often neglected but vital. GLP-1 may support addiction recovery and emotional stability. Sustainable change requires both science and emotional awareness. Intermittent fasting may not be the magic bullet for weight loss it appeared to be. Researchers analysed 22 global trials and found no clear advantage over standard dietary advice. Weight loss was broadly similar to traditional dieting, and there was no strong evidence of extra metabolic benefits. Body Torque Gym Founder Alex Flint told Mike Hosking intermittent fasting is just a really good method for portion control, but it has a much better marketing department. He says if you can stick to it, it's a fantastic tool, but it's not superior to regular calorie control methods and eating patterns. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Send a textWhat happens when weight loss becomes… easy?In this candid conversation, I sit down with a fellow therapist and friend Lucy Cavendish who has been taking Mounjaro (a GLP-1 medication) and has experienced significant weight loss. We explore the undeniable benefits of these injections — reduced appetite, quieter food noise, and the relief of finally seeing the scale move. But we don't stop there, we ask the deeper questions:What role did emotional triggers play in the weight gain to begin with? What happens when the injections stop? Can changing your body change how you feel about yourself? And how do we prevent old coping mechanisms from creeping back in?This episode isn't anti-medication. It's about integration.GLP-1s like Mounjaro can be powerful tools. But sustainable change often requires understanding the story behind the weight — the stress, grief, trauma, burnout, habits, identity shifts — and making sure those triggers aren't waiting quietly in the background. If you're considering these injections, currently taking them, or navigating weight loss while working on your relationship with food and your body, this episode will help you think beyond the scale.Because sometimes losing weight is the easy part.Understanding it is the real work. Thanks for listening, I hope this episode will be helpful.Philippe

Send a textThe biology of fat tissue, estrogen's role in metabolism and health, and how exercise interacts with these processes, especially during menopause.TOPICS DISCUSSED:Adipose tissue basics: White fat primarily stores energy in large lipid droplets, while brown fat burns fatty acids for heat via high mitochondrial density; white fat can “brown” with exercise or certain foods like capsaicin.Fat distribution & health: Subcutaneous fat (under skin) is more insulin-sensitive and less problematic than visceral fat (around organs), which links to metabolic issues; females store more subcutaneously pre-menopause, shifting to visceral post-menopause.Estrogen signaling: Estradiol binds nuclear and membrane receptors to regulate gene expression and mitochondrial function; it enhances insulin sensitivity and browning in fat cells, with receptors like ER-alpha feminizing fat distribution.Fat storage: Fat cells enlarge (hypertrophy) more than multiply in obesity, leading to hypoxia, inflammation, and insulin resistance; excess fatty acids spill to liver and muscle, worsening metabolic dysfunction.Menopause effects: Estrogen drop causes visceral fat gain, reduced energy expenditure, insulin resistance, and higher metabolic disease risk; symptoms include hot flashes and reduced exercise motivation, modeled in rodents via ovary removal.Exercise & estrogen links: Exercise boosts estrogen receptor expression and mitochondrial density in fat, mimicking estrogen's browning effects; synergism may explain reduced exercise responsiveness post-menopause.Brain-fat connections: Estrogen in the nucleus accumbens influences exercise motivation and fat browning; manipulations there alter running behavior and adipose metabolism in rodents.ABOUT THE GUEST: Victoria Vieira-Potter, PhD leads a lab at the University of Missouri, studying how estrogen and exercise influence adipose cells.RELATED EPISODE:M&M 174 | Adipose Tissue & Body Fat: Obesity, Insulin, Leptin, Fertility, Weight Loss & GLP-1 Drugs | Sean HartigSupport the showHealth Products by M&M Partners: SporesMD: Premium mushrooms products (gourmet mushrooms, nootropics, research). Ask frequent flyers what bothers them most about air travel and you might be surprised by the answer. It's not turbulence, cramped seats, or bad food — it's the other passengers.
