What if your weight loss resistance in your 40s isn't about willpower, but a powerful hormone shift that changes your metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and fat storage? In this episode of the Metabolic Freedom Podcast, Ben Azadi welcomes back hormone expert Karen Martel to unpack why weight loss resistance is often a biological signal, not a motivation problem. Karen explains how hormone disruption from environmental xenoestrogens can create estrogen dominant symptoms in younger women, even when bloodwork appears normal. The conversation then shifts into perimenopause and menopause, where the real metabolic shift begins. As estradiol declines, women often experience increased belly fat, worsening cholesterol, rising blood sugar, poor sleep, mood changes, and accelerated aging of skin and muscle. Karen breaks down the critical difference between estrogen and estradiol, why metabolic health often declines after ovarian function changes, and why many traditional weight loss strategies stop working during this phase. You'll also learn how environmental toxins impact hormone receptors, why hormone metabolite testing like the DUTCH test can provide deeper insight, and how bioidentical hormone replacement therapy may support long-term metabolic and overall health when used appropriately. If you or someone you love is entering their 40s and struggling despite healthy habits, this episode highlights a major missing piece. Key Topics Covered Why weight loss resistance is often hormonal rather than a willpower issue How hormone patterns differ between fertile years, perimenopause, and menopause What xenoestrogens are and how they mimic estrogen in the body Common sources of hormone disruptors: plastics, fragrances, pesticides, cleaning products, and receipts Why bloodwork may look normal while symptoms of estrogen dominance still exist Daily detox strategies to support hormone balance, including minerals and sauna use How hormone dynamics shift in the 40s as estradiol begins to decline The difference between estrogen and estradiol and their impact on metabolism Why fasting harder and eating less can backfire during perimenopause How estradiol loss affects insulin sensitivity, visceral fat, cholesterol, mood, libido, and collagen The Women's Health Initiative misconception and the role of synthetic progestins How urine hormone metabolite testing (DUTCH) helps personalize hormone support Why individualized care is essential when considering hormone replacement therapy Karen's personal experience with rapid menopause symptoms and recovery The role of gratitude and mindset in long-term health and resilience Resources & Links Mentioned Karen MartelWebsite: https://karenmartel.comPodcast: The Hormone Solution Podcast YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@karenmartelhormones/videos Special OfferCoupon code: FREEDOMDiscount: 15% off at https://karenmartel.com Follow Ben Azadi

In this insightful conversation, endocrinologist Dr Rocio Salas-Whalen joins Bahar to demystify the science and emotional journey behind GLP-1 medications. They explore how these drugs—originally developed for diabetes—have become a cornerstone of modern metabolic and hormonal health. From microdosing pitfalls to the importance of muscle preservation, protein intake, and hydration, Dr Salas-Whalen explains why these medications can be transformative when used responsibly under medical supervision. The discussion also touches on the psychological side of weight loss, the future of obesity treatment, and how GLP-1 might even influence brain health and addiction recovery. Dr Salas-Whalen’s new book Weightless offers practical guidance for women navigating midlife metabolism with compassion and science. Key Takeaways GLP-1 medications were discovered in 2005 and have redefined metabolic health. Chronic inflammation is a central issue in obesity and ageing. Microdosing doesn’t work—therapeutic dosing under expert care is essential. Muscle mass is the engine of metabolism and longevity. 100–110 grams of protein per day supports muscle, bone, and skin health. Hydration is often neglected but vital. GLP-1 may support addiction recovery and emotional stability. Sustainable change requires both science and emotional awareness. Intermittent fasting may not be the magic bullet for weight loss it appeared to be. Researchers analysed 22 global trials and found no clear advantage over standard dietary advice. Weight loss was broadly similar to traditional dieting, and there was no strong evidence of extra metabolic benefits. Body Torque Gym Founder Alex Flint told Mike Hosking intermittent fasting is just a really good method for portion control, but it has a much better marketing department. He says if you can stick to it, it's a fantastic tool, but it's not superior to regular calorie control methods and eating patterns. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Send a textWhat happens when weight loss becomes… easy?In this candid conversation, I sit down with a fellow therapist and friend Lucy Cavendish who has been taking Mounjaro (a GLP-1 medication) and has experienced significant weight loss. We explore the undeniable benefits of these injections — reduced appetite, quieter food noise, and the relief of finally seeing the scale move. But we don't stop there, we ask the deeper questions:What role did emotional triggers play in the weight gain to begin with? What happens when the injections stop? Can changing your body change how you feel about yourself? And how do we prevent old coping mechanisms from creeping back in?This episode isn't anti-medication. It's about integration.GLP-1s like Mounjaro can be powerful tools. But sustainable change often requires understanding the story behind the weight — the stress, grief, trauma, burnout, habits, identity shifts — and making sure those triggers aren't waiting quietly in the background. If you're considering these injections, currently taking them, or navigating weight loss while working on your relationship with food and your body, this episode will help you think beyond the scale.Because sometimes losing weight is the easy part.Understanding it is the real work. Thanks for listening, I hope this episode will be helpful.Philippe

Send a textThe biology of fat tissue, estrogen's role in metabolism and health, and how exercise interacts with these processes, especially during menopause.TOPICS DISCUSSED:Adipose tissue basics: White fat primarily stores energy in large lipid droplets, while brown fat burns fatty acids for heat via high mitochondrial density; white fat can “brown” with exercise or certain foods like capsaicin.Fat distribution & health: Subcutaneous fat (under skin) is more insulin-sensitive and less problematic than visceral fat (around organs), which links to metabolic issues; females store more subcutaneously pre-menopause, shifting to visceral post-menopause.Estrogen signaling: Estradiol binds nuclear and membrane receptors to regulate gene expression and mitochondrial function; it enhances insulin sensitivity and browning in fat cells, with receptors like ER-alpha feminizing fat distribution.Fat storage: Fat cells enlarge (hypertrophy) more than multiply in obesity, leading to hypoxia, inflammation, and insulin resistance; excess fatty acids spill to liver and muscle, worsening metabolic dysfunction.Menopause effects: Estrogen drop causes visceral fat gain, reduced energy expenditure, insulin resistance, and higher metabolic disease risk; symptoms include hot flashes and reduced exercise motivation, modeled in rodents via ovary removal.Exercise & estrogen links: Exercise boosts estrogen receptor expression and mitochondrial density in fat, mimicking estrogen's browning effects; synergism may explain reduced exercise responsiveness post-menopause.Brain-fat connections: Estrogen in the nucleus accumbens influences exercise motivation and fat browning; manipulations there alter running behavior and adipose metabolism in rodents.ABOUT THE GUEST: Victoria Vieira-Potter, PhD leads a lab at the University of Missouri, studying how estrogen and exercise influence adipose cells.RELATED EPISODE:M&M 174 | Adipose Tissue & Body Fat: Obesity, Insulin, Leptin, Fertility, Weight Loss & GLP-1 Drugs | Sean HartigSupport the showHealth Products by M&M Partners: SporesMD: Premium mushrooms products (gourmet mushrooms, nootropics, research). Welcome to Ozempic Weightloss Unlocked, where we dive into the latest news and updates on Ozempic, from its medical uses to its effects on lifestyle and health.Ozempic, containing semaglutide, mimics a natural hormone called GLP-1 to release insulin, steady blood sugar, slow digestion, and curb appetite, helping listeners feel full longer. GoodRx reports that studies show people on Ozempic lose six to seven percent of body weight, while Wegovy users average fifteen percent.Recent Cochrane reviews commissioned by the World Health Organization, released February eleventh, twenty twenty-six, confirm GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic deliver meaningful weight loss. Semaglutide leads to about eleven percent reduction after six to seventeen months, with benefits lasting up to two years if continued. Tirzepatide in Mounjaro and Zepbound shows even higher losses around sixteen percent, though more research is needed. Liraglutide offers four to five percent loss.Real-world evidence from Applied Clinical Trials highlights heterogeneous results, typically four to twelve percent loss at six to twelve months. For a twelve percent drop, the drug accounts for sixty-three percent, with context like persistence, lifestyle, and care making up thirty-seven percent. Improving persistence could boost outcomes further. Many hit an Ozempic plateau after twelve months, per GoodRx. Factors include dose, timing, diet, exercise, stress, and other meds like sulfonylureas or antidepressants. Pair it with avoiding fried foods, high-fat items, sugary drinks, and ultra-processed foods for best results.Rutgers Health research in the Journal of Medical Internet Research finds sixty-seven percent of users report weight loss or less appetite despite side effects like nausea, prioritizing effectiveness to keep going. However, stopping leads to regain, though half maintain some loss after a year.Watch for Ozempic face, gauntness from facial fat loss, as noted in a PMC study, so discuss screening and diet with doctors. These updates show Ozempic transforms lives when combined with healthy habits, but long-term independent data is key.Thank you listeners for tuning in. Is low-carb better than low-fat? Should you be eating 120 grams of protein a day? The internet says yes, but the science says it's not that simple. In this episode, Dr. Lisa Oldson digs into Dr. Kevin Hall's groundbreaking NIH research to explain why your macro ratio matters far less than you think. The real key to weight loss? The quality of the food on your plate; not the ratio of macros in it. Plus, Dr. Lisa shares why she's never counted her own macros, what to know if you're on a GLP-1 medication, and how to find your NBA, your next best action, without overhauling your entire life. Thanks for listening! Ask frequent flyers what bothers them most about air travel and you might be surprised by the answer. It's not turbulence, cramped seats, or bad food — it's the other passengers. This episode begins by revealing which behaviors irritate fellow travelers the most and what people wish would stop happening at 35,000 feet. https://pro.morningconsult.com/analysis/airplane-etiquette-annoying-behaviors What brings two people together romantically has always been a mystery — and today, it's more complicated than ever. Dating apps offer endless options, yet many people struggle to find meaningful connection. What actually predicts long-term attraction? What matters less than we think? And what do science and history tell us about love, choice, and compatibility? Paul Eastwick joins me to explain how attraction really works. He's a professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis, director of the Attraction and Relationships Research Laboratory, and author of Bonded by Evolution: The New Science of Love and Connection (https://amzn.to/49RrGS0) Most people pursue goals with a clear payoff — something they hope and expect to achieve. But some people dedicate their lives to goals they know will never happen. Why would anyone do that? What sustains them? And what do these impossible pursuits reveal about meaning, purpose, and fulfillment? Journalist Mark Medley shares remarkable stories of people chasing futures they'll never live to see. He's author of Live to See the Day: Impossible Goals, Unimaginable Futures, and the Pursuit of Things That May Never Be (https://amzn.to/46fV95J). And finally, think about all the surfaces your phone touches — tables, counters, public spaces. Then think about where that phone goes when it rings – your face. We wrap up with what science says about phones, germs, and what that means for your skin and health.https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/life-style/beauty/how-smartphones-damage-your-skin-5-ways-to-protect-against-blue-light-and-bacteria/articleshow/124968775.cms PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS QUINCE: Refresh your wardrobe with Quince! Start Here + Listening Paths: https://breakingupwithbingeeating.transistor.fm/start-hereWelcome to Season 2 of Breaking Up With Binge Eating. This 12-episode series walks you step-by-step from distress around food to something steadier and more workable—without perfection. In the Season 2 opener, we challenge the idea that loss of control is a character flaw and replace it with a more accurate frame: pressure exceeds capacity. We'll unpack how restriction, stress, exhaustion, and emotional overload narrow your thinking and spike urgency around food, and why “clamping down” tends to increase the pressure you're trying to reduce. You'll leave with a gentle practice for the week—one question that lowers shame and raises capacity: What pressure was my system responding to?

What if one of the biggest nutrition mistakes we're making isn't what we eat, but what we're missing?Dr. Tim Spector is one of the world's leading researchers on the gut microbiome and how it shapes metabolism, immunity, and even mental wellbeing. In this conversation Tim challenges the conventional nutrition playbook, explaining why calories are a poor guide to health, why most diets backfire, and how ultra‑processed foods can disrupt hunger signals in ways that make “willpower” a losing game.A central theme in this conversation is that many of us are focused on the wrong problem. Tim argues we've been sold a story that we need more protein, when what many people are actually missing is fiber, the essential fuel our gut microbes depend on. From there, the conversation becomes refreshingly actionable, focused on diversity over restriction, whole plants that support microbial health, and why fermented foods can punch far above their weight. This episode is a grounded, science‑backed reframing of nutrition. It's less about rules and more about understanding the system inside you, then feeding it well.__________________________________Links & ResourcesSubscribe to our Youtube Channel for more conversations at the intersection of high performance, leadership, and wellbeing: https://www.youtube.com/c/FindingMasteryGet exclusive discounts and support our amazing sponsors! One of the most effective weight-loss programs ever was free. Why was it so powerful?
Things got a little out of hand in Seattle during post game celebrations of the Seahawks Super Bowl victory. KING 5 and Washington Poison Control sound alarms -- unnecessarily -- over weight loss drug ODs. // Big Local: Cheney Public Schools is adding whole milk back on the menu. A Union Gap man was caught in a Net Nanny sting. Democrats want to go easy on him. // You Pick the Topic: CBS published a shockingly disingenuous article about ICE arrests.

Why would anyone need to be taught how to sleep, breathe, or drink water? Those are things you already do every day. And yet, it turns out most of us are doing them just wrong enough to undermine our health. In this SYSK Trending episode, I talk with Michael Breus, one of the world's leading sleep experts, about how small adjustments to when and how you sleep, breathe, and hydrate can produce outsized benefits for your energy, immunity, metabolism, and long-term health. Dr. Breus is a double-board-certified clinical psychologist and sleep specialist, and the author of Sleep Drink Breathe: Simple Daily Habits for Profound Long-Term Health (https://amzn.to/3ZposzW). His research shows that better health doesn't always require doing more—it often comes from doing the basics correctly. This is simple advice, but it's powerful—and it may change how you think about your daily habits. We've all heard the “rules” about sleep — you need exactly eight hours, falling asleep in front of the TV is bad, and you can make up for lost sleep on the weekend. But how much of that is actually true? This episode begins by separating sleep myths from sleep reality — and the answers may surprise you. https://www.thehealthy.com/sleep/sleep-facts-myths/ When it comes to building wealth, complexity is often the enemy. Many financial experts agree that the simplest strategy — saving automatically before you ever see the money — is also one of the most powerful. But how does it work in practice? How quickly does it add up? And why does automation matter so much? David Bach joins me to explain why this approach has helped millions of people grow wealth quietly and consistently. David is author of ten best-selling books, including The Automatic Millionaire (https://amzn.to/4rjqoow), recently expanded and updated. Self-doubt has a sneaky way of holding us back. It shows up right when opportunities appear, making us hesitate, second-guess, or play it safe — even when we know what we want. Where does that inner voice come from, and how do you turn it down without pretending it doesn't exist? Shadé Zahrai offers insight into how self-doubt forms and how to build real confidence that lasts. She's a behavioral researcher, award-winning peak-performance educator, and author of Big Trust: Rewire Self-Doubt, Find Your Confidence (https://amzn.to/49VY9GV). And finally, no matter how bug-free you think your home is, you're not alone in it. A surprising number of tiny creatures live alongside us — and in many cases, that's actually a good thing. We wrap up with who these unseen roommates are and why they're part of a healthy home ecosystem. https://www.ipm.org/show/amomentofscience/2023-03-28/arthropods-in-your-house PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS QUINCE: Refresh your wardrobe with Quince!
