Author Michael Lewis joins Sam to celebrate the 15th anniversary of The Big Short and talk about if we’ve learned any lessons since its publication—like why we so often conflate wealth and wisdom. They discuss why they don’t think anyone would actually prefer to go back 30 or 60 years if they had the choice, why cutting interest rates mean house prices will go up, and why Michael wouldn’t bet against Bitcoin but Sam refuses to take most financial risks. They talk about the tragedy of the CPFB being gutted, why Americans treat the government like the enemy, and if there’s a Canadian “deep state.” Keep up with Samantha Bee @realsambee on Instagram and X. Charlie Sheen is an actor perhaps known just as well for his off-screen antics as his on-screen performances. In his new memoir, The Book of Sheen, Charlie is finally coming clean on what was going on during his years of hard drugs, public divorces, and on-set disputes that came to define his later career and reputation. These days, humility, gratitude, and sobriety have come to replace his meme-able bravado. Sitting on stage with him at the 92nd Street Y in NYC, we shared jokes and jabs as I sought to discover why he chose to tell his story now — and why he took such a unique literary approach. Plus, we discuss the turning point that sent him on the road to recovery, and Charlie tells us what his one “do-over” in life would be — the answer might surprise you. Fail Better is now on YouTube! Host of The 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle and former Wall Streeter Stephanie Ruhle, joins Sam to talk about why it’s important to teach your kids use cash if you care about financial literacy. They talk about trying to lower the political temperature and why sometimes going viral is the worst thing for us. Stephanie explains why she doesn’t let herself get tired or sloppy and needs to “keep it tight” in her reporting so no one can attack her and the importance of fact checking, and why the best part of Donald Trump’s day is when he’s talking to the press. They bond over a shared love for Takis but agree it’s best to not know what’s in them, and why everyone should work in customer service at some point. This week we’re revisiting my conversation with the author Gretchen Rubin, since we could probably all use a little more light these days. Gretchen has spent years trying to understand happiness, the ways she can access it herself, and how to bring others in on the wisdom she’s gained. Gretchen also has a new podcast, Since You Asked, with bestselling author and psychotherapist, Lori Gottlieb. The two of them team up to take on the everyday problems we all face. Whether it’s the pet peeve that’s annoyed you for years, the question you’re too embarrassed to ask, or the dilemma you can’t solve, they'll address it all with warmth, humor, and insight. Comedian Cristela Alonzo joins Sam to talk about her new Netflix special Upper Classy, and how before her career took off she made the life-changing decision to leave LA to become her mom’s full-time end of life caretaker. She explains that she started standup as a way of dealing with the grief of losing her mom, and how she didn’t even know it could be a real job before then. Cristela talks about how when you grow up below the poverty line you learn that part of privilege is having the power to get people’s attention and how you might as well make the decision you’re faced with because tomorrow is coming either way. They gush over a shared love of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and “very special episodes” and learning to ride bikes later in life, and why it’s never too late to learn to experience joy. Steve Burns is best known for being the host of a beloved 90s children’s show, Blue’s Clues, so I didn’t expect this interview to be about Samuel Beckett. But it turns out that Steve and I share a deep admiration for the writer, as well as a lot of other common ground. Steve went quiet for about two decades after rumors of his death took over the internet, and now he’s back with a podcast (Alive, which just dropped September 17). The two of us talk about listening, what people didn’t appreciate about Pee-wee Herman, and the deep, lasting importance of Sesame Street. Steve has a lot of perspective, having stood both at the center and on the outside of important, formative media that influenced so many adults today. This is a conversation about the past, for the future. Get 50% Off Monarch Money, the all-in-one financial tool at www.monarchmoney.com/FAILBETTER. Fail Better is now on YouTube! Casey Johnston, the author of Sam’s favorite new book A Physical Education, joins Sam to talk lifting and leaving diet culture. Casey explains why initially she—and many others—felt lifting wasn’t for women who wanted to be seen as attractive, and why people are afraid to question the status quo of health industries. Casey explains the importance of resting your muscles, the dangers of the manosphere, and why Don Jr. did the worst deadlift she’s ever seen. Sam explains why she always lies on airplanes when they ask if she can open a 35 pound door and they agree that the perfect gym would be a library with weights. A decade ago, the actor Tom Pelphrey couldn’t have imagined the shape his life would take today: a father to a two-year-old daughter, starring in the new HBO series Task alongside Mark Ruffalo, and engaged to actress Kaley Cuoco. He was gripped by alcoholism and dissociation, having spent years working long, demanding days on the soap opera Guiding Light and ignoring his feelings to keep up with the grind. Then, he broke loose and started to heal. We talk about the realizations and practices that helped him get here (and to projects like Ozark) — including, at first, acquainting himself with the uncomfortable thoughts he’d been trying so hard to avoid. It’s clear from our conversation that Tom is tremendously grateful, and it’s inspiring to see him on the other end of these struggles. Governor JB Pritzker of Illinois joins Sam to talk about what to do when the president declares war on one of your cities—totally normal stuff! The Governor explains why people need to finally decide if they’re going to be bystanders or upstanders and why he thinks people usually try to be upstanders. They talk about how President Trump talks a big game but also the federal government conveys nothing to the actual states they’re talking about, and why Illinois is always ready to go to court against Trump and will always try to call Trump’s bluffs. They discuss how if the government actually cared about crime they’d try to collaborate with Governor Pritzker to take illegal guns off the streets and how Trump is actually the one defunding the police. Governor Pritzker reminds Sam that Dr. Phil—yes, that Dr. Phil—joined an ICE raid in Chicago, and why he’s disappointed in some Democratic elected officials. They get into inviting the Texas delegation to Illinois, if Illinois will redistrict, and why compromise right now gets you nothing. Keep up with Samantha Bee @realsambee on Instagram and X. If Gene Simmons’ hard exterior scared you off, it did its job. As a founding member of the band KISS, Gene has spent decades putting on what he calls a persona, and today it comes off — at least a little. We talk about Gene’s journey, including being raised by a single, adoring mother, the origins of KISS, and why Ozzy Osbourne’s down-to-earth demeanor had such an impact on Gene. The man in the chair across from me seems to fluctuate between Gene — a father, husband, and son — and The Demon — a protective layer for the public eye. It’s perhaps in the brief moments of switching from one to the other that the real magic happens, when we get to see all the ways that they connect. Fail Better is now on YouTube! Actress Martha Plimpton joins Sam to talk about how she became a trained animal tracker in Africa, how she ended up living in the same apartment for 42 years, and at the risk of turning this into a total real estate podcast, Martha shares that for the first time in her entire life she won’t have a homebase in New York. She tells Sam about living in London and how people are less grossed out by menopausal women (and women in general) there, and why hot flashes were actually kind of fun for her. Then they talk about her new show, Task on HBO, and if her new role is based on Kash Patel (it’s not). They get into the current stage in the fight for reproductive rights, and finally settle why women their age are obsessed with birdwatching. Keep up with Samantha Bee @realsambee on Instagram and X. Advice columnist extraordinaire and author of the new book Not My Type: One Woman vs a President, E. Jean Carroll joins Sam to talk about why she decided to write her book in secret even going to the length to edit it over Signal. Because Sam grew up reading E. Jean’s column, E. Jean also pauses to take credit for all of Sam’s success. They talk about the unwritten rules of jury trials like why you’re not allowed to entertain the jury with interesting stories and why E. Jean says it almost killed her. E. Jean regales Sam with the details of recreating her signature 1996 bobbed hair so the jury would believe she was fuckable (her words!), and the evidence she wasn’t encouraged to submit. Then she tells Sam about the Hideous Men Tour she used to run, and the year she spent as a writer at SNL. They had a gas! Keep up with Samantha Bee @realsambee on Instagram and X. Amanda Knox was a young student in a foreign country when she was thrust into an international media firestorm, accused — and then ultimately acquitted — of the murder of her roommate. Now an author and public speaker, she’s the executive producer of the new scripted drama “The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox”, an attempt to finally tell her story on her own terms. She has spent years grappling with the profound psychological impact of her imprisonment and exoneration, and she isn’t afraid to open up about her intentions in retelling this story once again in the public eye, or why she decided to face her Italian prosecutor years later. She joins me to discuss how she's made sense of it all, the contradictions she's observed in the systems she was caught in, and how she explains it all to her young daughter. Stolen Voices of Dole Valley is a haunting investigative podcast series from Pie in the Sky Media, KSL Podcasts and Lemonada, hosted by Carolyn Ossorio. With immersive storytelling, archival tape, and survivor interviews, the show revisits one of the darkest, most under-reported serial predator cases in the Pacific Northwest. The series begins in the early 1970s, when 16-year-old Jamie Grissim vanishes from her foster home in Vancouver, Washington. She would become the first suspected victim in a string of disappearances and murders stretching across rural Clark County. But for years, the cases remained unconnected—dismissed as runaways, forgotten in filing cabinets, or ignored altogether. At the center of this story is Norma Jean Countryman, a 15-year-old girl who escaped her abductor by chewing through the ropes that bound her. Her account, dismissed by police at the time, holds the key to understanding the scale and method of a predator hiding in plain sight… Through meticulous reporting and the raw testimony of survivors and family members, Stolen Voices of Dole Valley brings long-buried stories to light. From a body in a silo mistaken for D.B. Cooper to a grieving sister who becomes a tireless advocate, each episode builds toward justice —and reckoning. Over 50 years after the first disappearance, this series uncovers systemic failures, cultural blind spots, and the fierce resilience of those left behind. In a community desperate for closure, these voices—once ignored—finally speak for themselves. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Writer, executive-producer, and co-creator of Hacks Jen Statsky joins Sam to discuss her particular brand of hopeful pessimism, and their shared obsession with Jean Smart, who she says is one of the greatest nappers of all time. Jen explains that she is decisive if it’s a decision that only involves herself, but as soon as she brings in other people, there’s a big problem. Which is why she’s fortunate to have two amazing co-showrunners of Hacks, because they make most of the decisions together and she loves it—from hiring to writing assignments to what kind of office birthday cake to buy. They lament the lack of respect male comedians have traditionally held for female comedians who have come before them, and why six years may not sound like a lot but it’s an eternity in TV years. comedians have written off way more successful female comedians for eternity. They talk about what it’s like to go from being a staff-writer to being in charge of all the writers, and how the late night landscape has changed to be almost unrecognizable since Hacks began and how Jen kind of wants to leave her career to become a couples therapist. I should’ve known I was in for a revelatory conversation when I met with the family therapist Terry Real. He pioneered a book on male depression in the ‘90s, and he’s been helping countless people break through mental and relational barriers in the years since. I start the conversation by inquiring about how Terry knew he would be good at this work, and before I know it we’re talking about my mother — so I guess that answers that question. Terry is an excellent listener, and he has an impulse to make advice clear and accessible, extracting something universal from even the most specific of stories, including mine. Actress and activist Piper Perabo joins Sam to talk about the importance of listening to those who need help before speaking out on their behalf. Piper schools Sam on all the choices voters do actually have before 2028 (hello midterms!) and is the first guest to ever tell Sam that she is better at making decisions in the morning. Piper explains that she’ll probably never run for office because then she wouldn’t be able to keep saying exactly what she wants when she wants to, and why she prefers print news to online journalism. Plus they talk about Piper’s new show Butterfly, and why she’s thrilled to finally get to pay a villain. Keep up with Samantha Bee @realsambee on Instagram and X. Welcome to Bright Spots - a new series from Lemonada that offers bite-sized stories of community impact that will leave you feeling inspired and hopeful about what is possible. We talk to executive director Gwendolyn Clegg about how OFR got started and how their work supports families in Oklahoma. Memoirists do the generous work of letting us into their lives, and then there are ones like Melissa Febos who also graciously entertain all the new questions their work inspires. Melissa lets me in on the elements of her life and experiences that I’m curious about, from people’s reaction to her job as a dominatrix (as documented in her book Whipsmart) to her year-long trial of celibacy (the focus of her newest book, The Dry Season). Melissa is a writer both precise and elaborate, and I can’t help but compare her to many of the literary greats. We trace the roots of her compulsive behaviors and discuss how seeking new ideals for love and connection can help to find passion in the everyday — even in a conversation. Comedian Jena Friedman welcomes Sam back from her summer hiatus and talks about what it was like to work together at The Daily Show. Jena talks about how the Ben and Jerry’s Flavor Graveyard taught her about mortality and how she similarly is a “great flavor that people don’t appreciate.” Sam hears about Jena’s new show, Motherfucker, which she’s now working on at Edinburgh (though they can’t quite get the pronunciation down) Fringe and why criticism is her love language, which is why Edinburgh is the best place to workshop material. Sam tells Jena that Jena’s book is Sam’s dad’s coffee table book and then they unpack the Colbert cancellation and the way online insults change as you evolve into an older woman. I’m coming to you live from Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena, California, where I got to sit down with my friend, author Jess Walter. We chatted in front of a packed house (including a few friendly dogs) and now we’re sharing that event with the rest of you. Jess is not only my go-to buddy to text about all things basketball; he’s an accomplished novelist who can skewer the Hollywood elite just as easily as he can wryly observe the local inhabitants of his hometown of Spokane, Washington. We dissect his new novel, So Far Gone, a story rife with humor, heart, and perspective in uncertain times. Plus, Jess shares the wisdom he learned from his father and how fictional characters can do the often hard work of building empathy. The musician (-comedian-actor-composer-director-Californication guest star) Tim Minchin is an aspirational figure. He brings an unmatched level of precision and thoughtfulness to conversations, whether he’s discussing word play or the Catholic church. And he extends that scrutiny to his concepts of success and failure, which I welcome. Tim and I sit down to talk about the intricacies of his work, from the satisfaction of composing the successful Matilda: The Musical, to the pain of working on a big Dreamworks film that got canned. He’s poetic — and prophetic — about what we stand to learn from what we lose, and if that makes you never want to win again, well, so it goes. Tim’s new album “Time Machine” is out now! Good Things from Lemonada Media is a podcast about the good people in the world who are rolling up their sleeves and working hard to make things better. Each week, we'll be talking about this country's most complex and confounding issues in an effort to affect systemic change, with a rotating cast of incredible guests and Lemonada hosts. From the dire condition of the American foster care system to the decline of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives, protecting democracy, and more, we’re focusing on solutions – with the people putting them into action In this episode, as the federal government has been making unprecedented funding cuts, many communities are facing more uncertainty and less support. In response, the Marguerite Casey Foundation is making a bold move: they’re distributing $130 million this year to organizations working for racial and economic justice. In this episode, Carmen Rojas, the foundation’s president and CEO, gets into the reasons behind the move, which organizations will benefit and how this funding aims to fill critical gaps. This episode is presented by the Marguerite Casey Foundation. MCF supports leaders who work to shift the balance of power in their communities toward working people and families, and who have the vision and capacity for building a truly representative economy. Weird Al Yankovic joins Samantha Bee to discuss their unique meet-cute, and how their interview came to be due to a scam gone right. Al tells Sam about how he’s actually happy with all the choices he’s made in life except (other than wishing he had bought Apple stock) and yet he agonizes over little decisions—especially when editing music videos. He reveals that the ultimate dig at him is when people say he’s talented enough to do “real music”, why record companies beg for Christmas albums, and turning down an opportunity to open for Duran Duran at Madison Square Garden.
