Whether you like it or not, winter is just around the corner. Once the true cold sets in and the snow hits, that means the balancing act begins, trying to keep everyone healthy while staying indoors more and battling the never-ending runny noses. I know as moms, it can feel like we're constantly on guard, waiting for the next bug to sweep through the house. I've been there, but knock on wood, the last few years have been pretty good for us as far as sickness, and I've come to realize that we're not powerless when it comes to our kids' health. There are simple, everyday habits that make a huge difference in our family's immune health. So today, we're going to talk about practical, holistic habits that support the immune system. If you're ready to enter this winter season with more confidence (and hopefully fewer sick days), you're in the right place. I hope this episode leaves you feeling a little more equipped, and maybe even encouraged that you don't have to slog through months of illness, as we head into the winter months. Keeping our families healthy doesn't have to be overwhelming or complicated. Healthy habits and good hygiene really do work when it comes to preventing sickness, and that the effort that you put in is totally worth it. Thank you so much for joining me! Send us a textYou know that fantasy where your kid looks up from their tablet and says, “Sure, Mom, I'd love to play outside!” Yeah… me neither. That's why I called in Katherine Martinko, author of Childhood Unplugged and professional voice of reason, to talk about how to get our kids (and let's be honest, ourselves) off the screens without moving to the woods or starting a commune.Katherine lives what she calls a “digital minimalist” lifestyle. No TV. No tablets. Her three boys don't even have phones yet, and somehow, they're thriving. She's not anti-tech; she just believes it should be a tool, not a toy. And after reading her book and chatting with her, I'm officially rethinking my own Wi-Fi dependency. We dive into what's really going on with kids and screens, why they're so hard to resist, how they're rewiring our kids' brains, and why your kid probably spends less time outside than an inmate (yes, really). Katherine breaks down how parents can build environments that make the analog world more appealing, without guilt, shame, or pretending we're perfect Montessori moms. There's also a fascinating discussion about feminism and screen time, because apparently, trying to raise unplugged kids can feel like one more impossible standard for women to live up to. Katherine brings nuance, compassion, and a ton of practical strategies for reclaiming your kids' attention span (and maybe your own). What's Inside: How to create a home that encourages play and creativity without screens The shocking truth about how little outdoor time kids actually get When to let your teen have a phone (and why social media should wait until adulthood) Why emotional regulation starts offline and how to help kids reconnect with the real worldWhat does “connected” really mean to you? Is it scrolling beside your kid on the couch or actually laughing together over a board game? Swapping the scroll for real-life connection could change your whole family vibe. So tell me, what would your version of a screen-free day look like? If you've ever asked your child to do something—only to be met with silence, eye-rolls, or outright refusal—this episode is for you. Justin and Kylie dive into five surprising reasons why kids ignore us and share five powerful strategies to help them want to listen. With equal parts insight and humour, this episode offers real-world parenting advice that makes connection—not control—the goal. KEY POINTS: Kids often don’t listen because they don’t care about the task or see it as relevant to them. Developmentally, children are egocentric and lack adult-level perspective. Parents often forget to get their child’s attention before making a request. Screentime, distractions, and habits of non-compliance can reduce responsiveness. Being fun, patient, and involved can transform how children respond. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE:“Be the kind of person your kids want to pay attention to.” RESOURCES: Happy Families Membership – happyfamilies.com.au How to Get Your Kids to Really Listen [PDF download] ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: Get your child’s attention before speaking—use touch, eye contact, and a calm tone. Be involved—where possible, do the task together rather than directing from afar. Use gentle reminders and accountability instead of repeating or yelling. Be patient—allow time between request and response before following up. Make it fun—add humour, creativity, and playfulness to your interactions to boost connection. Welcome to Episode 31 of The Road to Carnivore Podcast! The Minnesota Starvation Experiment is one of the most stunning studies ever done, and shows us how restricted eating can cause deranged food behaviors like bingeing. This 15-minute episode discusses this 1940s study of healthy male subjects who started hoarding utensils, licking their plates and tableware, diluting and rehydrating their soup, and more. It is dieting, calorie restriction, or semi-starvation, that cause binge behavior in humans. Many parents find themselves in a pattern; they calmly ask their kids to do something and nothing happens. Then they repeat the ask, repeat it again, with one more reminder and then…the parent blows up. When kids don't listen, parents often feel the need to take back control and you can almost guarantee that you'll enter into a power struggle where no one comes out as the winner. In this repeat episode, you'll learn that misbehaviour is always a symptom of a deeper issue, what causes it, and the strategies to correct it.
