If you've ever asked your child to do something—only to be met with silence, eye-rolls, or outright refusal—this episode is for you. Justin and Kylie dive into five surprising reasons why kids ignore us and share five powerful strategies to help them want to listen. With equal parts insight and humour, this episode offers real-world parenting advice that makes connection—not control—the goal. KEY POINTS: Kids often don’t listen because they don’t care about the task or see it as relevant to them. Developmentally, children are egocentric and lack adult-level perspective. Parents often forget to get their child’s attention before making a request. Screentime, distractions, and habits of non-compliance can reduce responsiveness. Being fun, patient, and involved can transform how children respond. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE:“Be the kind of person your kids want to pay attention to.” RESOURCES: Happy Families Membership – happyfamilies.com.au How to Get Your Kids to Really Listen [PDF download] ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: Get your child’s attention before speaking—use touch, eye contact, and a calm tone. Be involved—where possible, do the task together rather than directing from afar. Use gentle reminders and accountability instead of repeating or yelling. Be patient—allow time between request and response before following up. Make it fun—add humour, creativity, and playfulness to your interactions to boost connection. And you're not meant to do it all.In this episode, I'm diving into how to get the whole family involved in keeping the home organized — including partners, siblings, and yes, even your autistic child (when and where it's appropriate). Because building a home that supports your child and your wellbeing starts with shared responsibility. You'll hear real-life examples from my own family of five (plus six pets!), and we'll explore how empathy, expectations, and letting go of perfection can make a massive difference — not just in your environment, but in your stress levels too.Inside this episode, you'll learn:How to delegate and share household tasks without rigid chore chartsWhy teaching empathy helps siblings better support their autistic brother or sisterCreative and neurodivergent-friendly ways to make tidying up more doable (and even fun)Why “good enough is enough” and how to let go of unrealistic expectationsWhat to do on the hard days when you just don't have capacity — and how to bounce back with graceWhether your home feels out of control or you're just tired of doing it all alone, this episode is packed with practical ideas to help your family work as a team — with room for everyone's differences.Mentioned in this episode:

Autism-Friendly Home Organization Strategies for Overwhelmed Parents – World Autism Acceptance Month 2025For many autistic children, transitions — even the small everyday ones — can feel overwhelming and emotionally exhausting. And when a bigger change comes along, like moving house or changing schools, it can completely throw them off.In this episode, I'm exploring how organization can be a powerful tool to help autistic kids feel safer and more supported through transitions — whether it's getting dressed in the morning or adjusting to an unexpected schedule change.I share real-life examples from my own parenting experience (including a Friday that did not go to plan), and offer simple, actionable tips to prepare your child for change — and take the pressure off you too.In this episode, you'll learn:Why transitions are so hard for many autistic kids (and how PDA adds another layer)How to use preparation, routines, and visual cues to reduce resistanceWhat to say instead of setting timers if your child finds countdowns stressfulPractical ways to organize your day, your time, and your environment for smoother transitionsHow to prepare for big changes like school moves or home movesHow to build in backup plans for unexpected disruptions — and why they matterWe also talk about why organization isn't just about tidying the house — it's about planning time, managing stress, and helping your autistic child feel secure in an unpredictable world.Key message: When we plan ahead and create flexible, supportive systems, we give our children what they need to feel calm, prepared, and capable of handling change — and that benefits the whole family.Mentioned in this episode:

Cooking is a basic survival skill and yet many kids reach adulthood without knowing how to prepare even a simple meal. Meanwhile, other Bay Area kids are producing professional-level dishes on shows like “Kids Baking Championship” and “Chopped Junior.” So how can children get started in the kitchen? Seasoned instructors suggest kicking off with essential skills such as chopping – and, yes kids can use knives without injuring themselves – and learning to read recipes. We'll talk with culinary teachers, young chefs and you about the best ways to teach kids to cook. 'Just listen to me!' How many times have you heard yourself say those words today (in your head or out loud)? That frustrating moment when you're asking nicely (for the hundredth time), offering choices (like all the parenting books say), negotiating, explaining, pleading... and your child still acts like they can't hear you. You know you're making reasonable requests. You know other kids can do this. So why does 'put your shoes on' turn into an epic power struggle? What if everything we've learned about getting kids to cooperate is actually making it harder? As a mother of five, I've discovered that modern parenting advice about 'gentle choices' might be missing something crucial. In this episode, I reveal: - Why modern parenting's favorite tools might be undermining your authority - The simple shift that transforms resistance into cooperation - How to combine warmth with clear leadership - Exactly what to say to get results (without the battle) From morning routines to bedtime battles, these practical strategies will transform how your children respond to requests. This isn't about harsh discipline or blind obedience. It's about finding that sweet spot between gentle parenting and clear leadership that helps your children thrive. Learn the exact framework I use to get cooperation without constant negotiation. I'm joined by Dr. Vanessa Lapointe to discuss effective discipline strategies and how to approach those tough parenting moments with warmth, compassion, and understanding - for yourself and your child. In this episode, we dive into: - The profound impact of coregulation and why it's a crucial first step we don't want to skip if we want the discipline and lessons we're trying to teach our kids to stick. - How to navigate those “bad behavior” moments by rethinking the entire framework of discipline (Spoiler Alert: It starts with a mindset shift to help you understand how there is actually no such thing as “bad" behaviors.) - The up-side of having a more sensitive, reactive, or explosive kid - and how to nurture their more sensitive side to bring out their best qualities and help them manage their big emotions so they are more in control of their behaviors. - The powerful role of connection in discipline, including how to create a safe space where your child can learn and grow, even in the midst of challenging behaviors. - Strategies for parents struggling to keep their cool, working through feelings of guilt or shame, and understanding that it's never too late to implement new parenting approaches. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by traditional discipline methods or wondered how to discipline your child in a way that strengthens your bond, this episode is for you! LEARN MORE ABOUT DR. Welcome to Episode 30 of The Road to Carnivore Podcast! One of the most common problems I see with people who struggle with doing carnivore successfully is behavior that lacks integrity. Integrity is scarce in our modern world, and our culture encourages us to say things we don't mean, and not follow through on the things we said we would. This 9-minute episode discusses how essential integrity is on the carnivore journey, and also how to build it if it's currently missing from your life.
