How do I get my kids to listen?! It's no secret: getting kids to listen the first time is a huge point of interest for parents. It's the topic that most often brings people to me. Now, while there is no single good answer, there are a lot of things you can and should try, and I'll be introducing you to some ideas that I hope will help you on your quest for attentive children! I've sourced the title of this week's episode from Foster Cline and Jim Fay's book Parenting with Love and Logic, since I've found some of their methodology to be useful. As always, I encourage you to read the original material, test and see how you feel about what you've learned, and then decide whether you will use it in your own life. In this episode, I'll talk about the why and how of offering choices to children whenever possible. I'll discuss “code words” I use with Lily and Grady to help them be attentive when I need them to do something. I'll talk about win-win ways to reward your kids for overall good behavior while still retaining leverage to encourage them to listen. Perhaps most importantly, I'll discuss your children's greatest need: that you put your phone down and dedicate time to getting on their level, playing with them, and listening to them. Listening is a two-way street! As you engage with your children on their terms, and as you set healthy mutual expectations for your relationship, I guarantee you will all be more willing and able to listen to each other and have a happy experience within your four walls. Getting Your Kids to Obey You

Imagine how convenient it would be if every time you asked your kid to do something they obeyed. You never had to worry about uproars in restaurants or meltdowns anywhere else in public. Your kids just obeyed you all the time. Don't let your imagination run too rampant because there is no fail-proof way to guarantee that. However, we do have biblical guidance on how we can increase the likelihood of our children obeying us. In Ephesians 6, Paul addresses children obeying and honoring their parents and in conjunction to that, speaks instruction to fathers to help their children fulfill the commandment of obedience. On this episode, I unpack what Paul says to dads about provoking their children to anger, and what we should do instead to help our children obtain the promise attached to obedience. — For more content make sure to check out https://fatheringourfuture.com/ and if you'd like to support this effort visit: https://fatheringourfuture.com/support/

What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms

We're doing a "Deep Dive" into our past episodes about "getting our kids to...," from listening to what we say the first time, to talking to us about what matters most to them. Find the rest of the episodes in this deep dive series in this Spotify playlist. Getting your kid to talk to you is never easy (unless you're standing with car keys in hand, front door ajar, 15 minutes late for an appointment). Here are some parenting strategies that work to get kids talking at every age. Based upon empirical evidence, “How was school today?” is the most annoying question a mom could ever ask. So why bother trying?  Because Jennifer Kolari, author of Connected Parenting: How to Raise a Great Kid, says getting our kids to open up is part of our job description: It's our job as parents to help our kids sort through and process the things that happen to them during the day. “They don't have the higher-order thinking to do it on their own yet. In this episode we lay out what gets our kids to talk– at every age and stage. Margaret says you have to “talk the talk that arrives.” But Amy comes at it armed with research; if her ninth-grader wants to talk NBA draft, she's ready to lean in. Both of us plan to work on what Marie Roker Jones calls “listening with the intent to understand.” Here's links to some research and hilarious takes on this topic that we mention in this episode: Alice Bradley for Lifehacker Offspring: Stop Asking Your Kid About Their Day Marie Roker-Jones for Good Men Project: 10 Ways to Get Your Son to Open Up and Talk to You Clare Gagne for Today's Parent: Age-By-Age Guide To Getting Your Kid To Talk Liz Evans for Huffington Post: 25 Ways to Ask Your Kids ‘So How Was School Today?' Plus, how to introduce your kids to veggies and teach them about nutrition so they actually enjoy eating healthy foods.  Be sure to listen to Part 1 of our interview with The Food Babe! Vani Hari is a revolutionary food activist, a New York Times best-selling author, co-founder of the organic food brand Truvani, and was named one of the “Most Influential People on the Internet” by Time magazine. Hari started FoodBabe.com to spread information about what is really in the American food supply. She teaches people how to make the right purchasing decisions at the grocery store, how to live an organic lifestyle, and how to travel healthfully around the world.  Her new cookbook, Food Babe Family will officially hit stores October 17, 2023. Resources mentioned:  Pre-order the Food Babe Family Cookbook - Out October 17th! Avocado oil, coconut oil, and grass-fed butter are all great options. Organic white flour, whole wheat flour, and almond flour are great options for cooking and baking. At dinnertime, serve 2-3 vegetable options first before any other dish. Talk to your kids about the vegetable, where it comes from, and how you cooked it, without the distractions of other foods.  Teach your kids about different food options and how to make the best choices for themselves. Your kid will probably never opt out of getting ice cream, but they will try to make the best choice if you give them the information to do so. Welcome to The Cheeky Been Podcast! If you've ever spent time with children, particularly if you're a parent, you know that along with being amazing, beautiful, and lovable creatures, kids can sometimes be downright annoying. They can make bad decisions, get themselves into trouble, and, perhaps most frustrating of all, they have a way of not doing what we tell them to do! If we're not careful, we can end up yelling. In fact, our guest today observes that, although the vast majority of parents wouldn't dream of hitting their children, yelling at their kids from time to time is a different story. And yet, yelling can have negative side effects that we as parents don't necessarily intend. Of course, none of us can be perfect parents. So, she also offers tips for how parents can pay attention to their own emotions, practice self-compassion, and find alternatives to yelling that are better for connecting with their children. Host David B. Feldman interviews Nurse Rona Renner, one of the long-time co-hosts of ‘About Health' and author of the book Is That Me Yelling? A Parent's Guide to Getting Your Kids to Cooperate Without Losing Your Cool.   The post 3/13/23 Is That Me Yelling? Nurse Rona on Parenting appeared first on KPFA.

(It's not just for dads, it's for moms and families as well, but they just both happen to be dads and brothers who wanted to give back to the world of fly fishing.) In their podcast they explore the ways families can get together through fly fishing, and have talked to many people across the country about this subject, so Joshua has a lot to share from his conversations and research. If you have always wanted to bring your family together in fly fishing, you'll pick up some great suggestions. In the Fly Box this week, we have an eclectic mix of suggestions and questions, including: Why do I have trouble mixing my dubbing in an old coffee grinder? It comes out like rope. I  have trouble tying with a hackle cape with thick stems. What can I do? I have trouble hooking steelhead. What am I doing wrong? A comment from a listener on the growing movement that helps fish and game departments protect all aquatic species, not just gamefish and game animals. How can I practice casting before my next bonefish trip? What footwear do you recommend for wading the flats? It seems like I can get closer to bonefish wading that from a boat. Is that usually the case? I have a new baby coming. How can I childproof my tying area? Phil Rowley says that eutrophic lakes offer the best trout fishing, but all the eutrophic lakes I fish in New Hampshire are too warm for trout. Why the disconnect? Someone told me to switch from left-hand wind to right-hand wind when I go saltwater fishing (I am right-handed). Should I heed their advice? Why don't more fly anglers wear a PFD? If Tom had one final trip, where would he go? A great tip from a listener on pre-rigging flies at home I can't cast a Euro rig with my 905 rod. Should I invest in a specific Euro nymphing rod and what will it give me that my current rod does not?

Let's start communicating with our kids in a much better way. “That's really counterproductive when we don't give kids the chance to talk about what really matters to them…They do have important things they want to talk about, and their opinions matter just as much as ours do, probably even more in some cases…They have their own experiences to share, and we need to listen to them.” - Jackie BaileyAbout the Guest:Jackie is the author of SELF-Centered Leadership: Becoming Influential, Intentional, and Exceptional published in 2014, and a 2015 semi-finalist in The World Championship of Public Speaking – placing her in the top 98 speakers of 33,000 competitors.Today, Jackie runs The Speak Feed Lead Public Speaking Studio in Redmond, Washington USA; and is the founder and executive director of The Speak Feed Lead Project, a nonprofit with a mission to empower children, teens, and adults with public speaking skills.Website: https://www.speakfeedlead.org/30 Days free of Positive Priming your Family: https://www.positiveprime.com/jackieb-30-day-challenge/Connect with Blissful Parenting:Free Workshop ► https://www.BlissfulParentingWorkshop.com Website ► http://www.TheBlissfulParent.com/ Blog ► http://www.TheBlissfulParent.com/blog Podcast ► http://www.TheBlissfulParent.com/podcast/ Contact ►http://www.BlissfulParenting.com/contact Follow Us On Social Media:Youtube ► https://www.youtube.com/theblissfulparent Facebook ► https://www.facebook.com/theblissfulparent Instagram ► https://www.instagram.com/theblissfulparent/ Twitter ►https://twitter.com/blissfulparent Thanks for listening! Thanks so much for listening to our podcast!
