We get into the deep with David Fiensy about Bible times, talking about death and the importance of being thankful we live now. After Daivd leaves us, we go even deeper.
David Fiensy tells us about life long ago and the people who spread the "Jesus Movement." They shared clothes? Gross. There was a valley of cheese makers? Great! They sold children? Oh no...
Today, Denise engages in the second part of her dynamic interview with guest David A. Fiensy. They continue to discuss the cultural context of Jesus' parables and how these lessons apply to our lives today. David is the author of Hear Today: Compassion and Grace in the Parables of Jesus. Author Bio: David A. Fiensy has a passion for teaching and preaching the Bible and for thinking about and articulating theological ideas. After graduating from Duke University with a Ph.D. in New Testament and Second Temple Judaism, David Fiensy taught for seven years at Kentucky Christian University. He then served a two-year tenure at the Institut zur Erforschung des Urchristentums in Tuebingen, Germany. Upon returning to the United States, he accepted a church pastorate for six years and then resumed teaching at Kentucky Christian University. He has participated in seven archaeological excavations and surveys and has otherwise traveled widely in the Mediterranean area and the Middle East. Now semi-retired, David serves as a speaker and consultant for churches and colleges and is involved in several writing and research projects. David and his wife, Molly, have two daughters and three grandchildren. You can connect with David at https://davidafiensy.com/.
Up until recently we knew almost nothing about the economy of Galilee during Jesus' time living there. Many academics believed and taught that Jesus and his followers were quite poor, as was the region, and that Jesus was leading a partly class-based revolt. Since then we've learned a lot about the region, as a more growing, entrepreneurial. and even industrial economy. Here we continue our conversation with archeologist David Fiensy about the economy and culture in which Jesus walked. Professor Fiensy is the author of The Archaeology of Daily Life: Ordinary Persons in Late Second Temple Israel.
For the last half of the month, Denise rounds off the discussion of God's gifts to us for Christmas and the year round as she interviews guest David Fiensy. Listen in as they discuss biblical context of the parables of Jesus and what a gift His Word is to us. Fiensy The Journey: Spiritual Growth in Galatians and Philippians SYNOPSIS: The purpose of life is not to prosper; it is to develop the soul (Alexander Solzhenitsyn) The Christian life is not so much walking the line as hitting the road. It is about journeying with God through the adventures of life, climbing the mountains of joy and descending into the valleys of suffering. In this inspiring, accessible, and engaging book, Fiensy draws on his forty years as teacher and pastor to explore Paul's spirituality. He focuses on Paul's autobiographical references in his letters to the Galatians and Philippians. The Journey teaches us that the Christian's life in the Spirit can benefit from suffering as well as joy, danger as well as peace, and rejection as well as love. CONNECT WITH DAVID A. The Journey – David FiensyThere is no doubt that the best way to learn about Christ and what it means to live a Christian life, is to learn from the Bible. But, for the majority of us, we do not have the time nor that expertise to do Biblical research on a level that allows us to truly do a “deep dive” on Biblical studies. Life just seems to get in the way. So, what should we do? Well, how about reading books written by those who have the understanding, those that have been driven to do the research and provides the information we seek explained in ways that we CAN understand? That makes a lot of sense, right? Well, that's the way it's supposed to be. Praise God! My guest today is just such a person. David Fiensy has been on our program before a few years back. But he has written a new book, titled, https://amzn.to/3lOyQfC (“The Journey: Spiritual Growth in Galatians and Philippians.”) I know you will get a lot out of this interview, so put on your seat belts and hold on! Welcome back to the program, David Fiensy! David, thank you for coming back on the program to discuss your new book! Praise God! For those that may have missed your last visit with us, other than that brief information I just shared, tell us in your own words, “Who is David Fiensy?” Your book, https://amzn.to/3lOyQfC (“The Journey: Spiritual Growth in Galatians and Philippians,”) is about Spiritual growth by studying just two of Paul's letters. Why Galatians and Philippians? This is not just a verse by verse outline. You dive into the deeper things of Spirituality, correct? You say life is not about “walking the line,” so to speak, but about “hitting the road.” What do you mean by that? Through your studies in writing this book, in your opinion, how did Paul's life, all the up's down's and side-ways events that happened to him, influence his walk with God? One famous verse, if I could call it that, is from Galatians that say, “I've been crucified with Christ.” But we know he was not physically crucified. What was Pauling saying and trying to get us to understand with that statement? We know Paul suffered many, many things. Too many to even try to comprehend it in our modern lifestyle and culture. How did going through all of this bring meaning to his Faith? Why did you write this book at this time? What led you to believe this day and time in which we live right now is when this book needs to be shared? How can your readers apply what they are reading and learning to their everyday life? David, this is all so fascinating. How can someone get a copy of your book, https://amzn.to/3lOyQfC (“The Journey: Spiritual Growth in Galatians and Philippians?”) Is it on Amazon? And if someone wanted to get in touch with you, to ask a question or maybe to do an interview such as this, how can they do that? How can they get in touch with you? Folks, in this day and hour in which we live, you need to understand the deep, Biblical meanings of some of the things we experience on a daily basis. Sometimes, it seems like we are facing an uphill battle each and every step. But if you will take what David Fiensy has put together in this great book, https://amzn.to/3lOyQfC (“The Journey: Spiritual Growth in Galatians and Philippians,”) will find meaning behind it all. This book will give you the Wisdom and Encouragement to “keep on keeping on.” Amen! Go down into the show notes and click the link right there to order you copy today. In fact, you do realize, that at the time of this broadcast, Christmas is just around the corner, right? I'd recommend you order two or three copies and give them away as gifts! Glory to God! I believe you pastor would appreciate a copy of this book, too! Praise God! Go down into the show notes, click the link and order your copies today. David, thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to come bank and join us today. I do appreciate it. Folks, that is all... Support this podcast
Daily Life in Late Second Temple Israel – David Fiensy pt 4 (https://kcrpodcast.com/episode-428-far-can-david-fiensy-interview-pt-1/screen-shot-2019-01-07-at-9-49-47-am/) Today, I have the blessing of talking with someone who is an expert when it comes to Biblical antiquities. For over 30 years, David Fiensy has been teaching Biblical studies and participating in numerous archaeological excavations and has a lot to share about ancient Palestine during the Roman occupation era in that area. He has written twelve academia books during the last 30 years. Now “semi-retired,” he has authored his first work of fiction, a novel titled “As Far As You Can.” The setting is in Palestine about AD66 at the outbreak of the war against Rome. We discussed that book in his last interview. You can hear all about that book if you go back into our archives and listen to episodes 428 and 429.What about family life in general? Marriage, spousal responsibilities, etc?ow, today we are blessed to have some of the best medical care that mankind has ever known. We discussed some of the diseases in ancient Israel, in the days of Jesus. Tell us about some of medical care that was available in the days of Jesus? That makes sense when you think about the woman with the issue of blood and how she spent all her living and nothing worked. What was the average life expectancy in that time? From birth: age 20 After age 20: Men 37 Women: 34 Some lived longer, some not so much. If someone did die, what were funerals like? Infant funerals – not so much of a big deal. When I was growing up, I seen estimates that about 70% of Americans were in church on Sunday. And you could see it. Even small churches had their parking lots packed out. Today, I seen on estimate that less than 20% of Americans go to church anymore. What was it like in the days of Jesus as far as religious responsibilities go? If someone “missed” going to the synagogue, was that a major deal? David, when do you think we will be able to get a copy of this book? Will you come back on the program when your book is published and update us? If someone wanted to get in touch with you, to ask a question or possibly do an interview such as this, how can they do that? How can someone get in touch with you? Folks, we are about out of time for today. I want to recommend David Fiensy’s book that we have been discussing to you. It sounds absolutely fascinating. I know it will give you a deeper perspective and appreciation of the scriptures. You will need to add his book, “Archeology of Daily Life in Late Second Temple Israel” to your reading collection. Use it as a reference as you do your Bible Studies. It will add clarity like you probably have never seen or understood before. Common teachings you’ve heard for years will suddenly make a lot more sense. Just click the link below to order your copy today. Before we go, I want to make everyone aware of a new feature that I’ve added to our podcast ministry. For the last several years, I’ve assisted many Christians, both in ministry and out, in advice and ideas on how to either start a podcast or improve an existing podcast. I’ve recently started a program called, “ASK BOB.” It allows you to send me your podcasting questions directly. Anything about podcasting that you want to ask. From “What is a podcast?” to “How do I monetize a podcast?” and anything in between. If I use your question on the “ASK BOB” program, I have a special gift for you. I’m not going to go into detail here because we are all out of time. But go to www.kcrpodcast.com (http://www.kcrpodcast.com/) and click the “Podcast Training” link at the top or just click the “Podcast Training” link in the show notes. That is all the time we have for today. David, I want to thank you one more time for taking the time out of your schedule to come on and visit with us for a few minutes and discuss your new book,

Therefore, they did not have to explain certain terms or settings. Because everyone was living that culture. Take for example, I don’t know, “The Last Supper” and the term “reclining at the table.” That doesn’t mean they had just finished their feast and were lounging around in lawn chairs like we do at picnics today. It refers to the fact they did not traditionally use tables and chairs like we do in the west. Anyway, I love what you’ve done with this book. Let me ask you this, were there any surprises that you found as you were doing your research, that would totally transform what we “think,” or what you thought, ancient Israel was like? Anything that would destroy some type of false teaching going on today as to what the “Biblical writers” were trying to communicate? Where Bible scholars have basically been teaching us wrong traditions? Let’s go over just a few of the Chapters. Give us some little tidbit that will gives us a deeper perspective on some of the more common things that we take for granted. No so much take for granted, but something that maybe we do not understand at all with our western point of view. Tell us about what City Life was like in the days of Jesus. David is writing another book, titled, “Archaeology of Daily Life in Late Second Temple Israel.” I’m looking forward to hearing all about this book. I believe it will help put some Biblical stories into context for us as we study our Bible. Now, help me welcome to the program, David Fiensy! David, thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to visit with us today! David, just in case someone did not hear your first interview, let me start with the first question I always start off. Tell us, in your own words, “Who is David Fiensy?” This new book is not a work of fiction like your book, “As Far As You Can.” Correct? Your expertise is in Ancient Israel archeology. Tell us again, how you became interested in that field of work and especially in Israel? How many times have participated in digs in Israel? Isn’t it difficult, because of the influence of Islam and areas controlled by the Muslims, to get permission to dig in Israel? I might add that there are some Jewish elements that do not want people digging around either, correct? How is this book different from other books that discuss the same topic, “Daily Life” in Biblical times? If someone wanted to get in touch with you, to ask a question or possibly do an interview such as this, how can they do that? How can someone get in touch with you?
