Increasing fruit and vegetable consumption sounds so trivial, but I honestly believe that concerted efforts to increase this key measure of our diet quality would culminate in success. And by success I mean successfully improving people's health, but also increasing the wealth of our communities and alleviating our nation's food supply insecurity.To explore this concept further with me is Jonathan Pauling, CEO of Alexandra Rose, one of my favourite charities and one that Doctor's Kitchen supports.10 years ago Jonathan helped develop its new mission - to improve access to healthy and affordable food for all. They built the ‘Rose Vouchers' for Fruit & Veg Project to pioneer the use of financial incentives to help families on low incomes avoid food insecurity, nutrition insecurity and food related ill-health. From small pilots in London supporting 45 families, this work has now spread around the UK supporting 3,500 families every week.The scheme works by giving families literal cash in the form of rose vouchers that can be used at local food markets in exchange for fresh produce. It's increased fruit and vegetable consumption by a staggering amount as we'll get into during the podcast, and I was genuinely shocked at some of the impressive numbers that Jonathan shared with me.Today we explore the economic and health incentives for why this scheme should be adopted across every local authority and NHS commissioners to not only help the millions of people living in financial hardship in the UK, but also to alleviate the burden on our health system.

Dr. Pauling is the senior author of the manuscript “Assessment of the Systemic Sclerosis-Associated Raynaud's Phenomenon Questionnaire: Item Bank and Short Form Development”, which endeavored to “develop, refine and score a novel patient-reported outcome instrument to assess the severity and impact of Raynaud's Phenomenon (RP) in Systemic Sclerosis (SSc)”. In this episode, we discuss the challenges associated with measuring one of the most common disease manifestations of scleroderma, Raynaud's, and how the Assessment of Systemic Sclerosis-Associated Raynaud's Phenomenon (ASRAP) questionnaire was harmonious in the paper's results and final conclusions.

Ben Pauling is a writer, director, and actor. He is known for his new film Dream (2023), which highlights the issues of child trafficking in America. In this episode, the host Larry Hagner welcomes guest Ben Pauling to discuss a topic that has been gaining a lot of attention. They briefly touch on Ben's personal life before diving into the main subject. They mention the release of some films and the media's coverage of the issue, which has created a perfect storm for their own film.  Ben Pauling emphasizes that human trafficking is an issue of utmost importance and one that demands immediate attention. He also highlights the need for rescue missions and organizations dedicated to combating this problem. However, despite the efforts of these organizations, less than 1% of trafficked children are currently rescued. This statistic underscores the enormity of the challenge and the urgent need for increased awareness, resources, and action. Awareness is key in prevention, especially when it comes to the issue of human trafficking. One of the common misconceptions is that human trafficking only happens in certain areas or to certain types of people. However, the reality is that it can occur anywhere, from small towns to large cities, and can affect people from all walks of life. Linus Carl Pauling (February 28, 1901 – August 19, 1994) was an American chemist, biochemist, chemical engineer, peace activist, author, and educator. He published more than 1,200 papers and books, of which about 850 dealt with scientific topics. New Scientist called him one of the 20 greatest scientists of all time, and as of 2000, he was rated the 16th most important scientist in history. For his scientific work, Pauling was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954. For his peace activism, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962. He is one of five people to have won more than one Nobel Prize (the others being Marie Curie, John Bardeen, Frederick Sanger and Karl Barry Sharpless). Of these, he is the only person to have been awarded two unshared Nobel Prizes, and one of two people to be awarded Nobel Prizes in different fields, the other being Marie Curie. Pauling was one of the founders of the fields of quantum chemistry and molecular biology. His contributions to the theory of the chemical bond include the concept of orbital hybridisation and the first accurate scale of electronegativities of the elements. Pauling also worked on the structures of biological molecules, and showed the importance of the alpha helix and beta sheet in protein secondary structure. Pauling's approach combined methods and results from X-ray crystallography, molecular model building, and quantum chemistry. His discoveries inspired the work of Rosalind Franklin, James Watson, Francis Crick, and Maurice Wilkins on the structure of DNA, which in turn made it possible for geneticists to crack the DNA code of all organisms. In his later years, he promoted nuclear disarmament, as well as orthomolecular medicine, megavitamin therapy, and dietary supplements, especially ascorbic acid (commonly known as Vitamin C). He was married to the American human rights activist Ava Helen Pauling. Jonathan Pauling is chief executive of the Alexandra rose charity, whose vision is for everyone to have access to healthy and affordable food and whose mission is to give families access to fresh fruit & vegetables in their communities.I hadn't come across the charity before, but our values are so aligned! It was founded in 1912 by Queen Alexandra and established to support Londoners in poverty. Inspired by a priest in her native Denmark selling roses to raise money for those in need, Queen Alexandra brought the idea back to the UK.In a landmark study that started a few months ago, they are trialling rose vouchers that are exchangeable for healthy fruit and vegetables from street market vendors in deprived areas. This latest trial is on the back of years of work across other areas in the UK and pilots where they're also involved in cooking workshops and healthy start vouchers for families with young children. Something that Johnathan mentions on the podcast today really hit home to me. He said we can't just tackle financial inequality, we have to tackle health inequality.And from previous schemes they've already demonstrated that simply increasing fruit and vegetable consumption can lead to improvements in energy, digestive health and reduced the reliance on processed foods. That isn't to say this is a cure-all for poverty, but it's definitely something we should be looking at to “level up”.I've wished for the ability to prescribe healthy food and this study could pave the way for that reality.
