On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with conductor, composer, and longtime contemporary music advocate Brad Lubman for a wide-ranging conversation about interpretation, rehearsal, composition, and the deeper responsibilities of making music with other people.Brad first came onto my radar through his work conducting Steve Reich's music, but this conversation quickly opened into something much larger. He talks about the way audiences often associate him with Reich's music, while reminding us that he had already built a substantial life in new music long before that connection began. From there, we get into a fascinating discussion about what conductors actually do, and why he resists the idea that great conducting is about imposing personality on a score. For Brad, the work begins with the composer's intentions and the discipline of bringing those intentions to life as clearly and honestly as possible. We also spend time on Brad's path as both a percussionist and a conductor, including how his early love of drums and rock music, and later of orchestral music, shaped the musician he became. He reflects on what percussion taught him about immediacy, time, and gesture, and how those lessons still inform the way he teaches conductors today. His thoughts on rehearsal are especially compelling: the idea that a conductor's role is not to dominate but to create conditions in which musicians can play with confidence, clarity, and artistry.A particularly rewarding part of this conversation centers on Brad's own music, especially his powerful piece Tangents for two pianos and two percussionists. He shares the origin of that work, how it emerged during a moment when he was considering stepping away from composition, and why it marked the beginning of a new phase in his musical language. We also talk about his long association with Steve Reich, Ensemble Signal, and the kinds of life-changing moments that can come from simply doing your work well and being ready when the right people are listening.By the end of the conversation, what comes through most clearly is Brad's seriousness of purpose and his belief in music as a communal act. Whether he is conducting, composing, teaching at the Eastman School of Music, or building programs with Ensemble Signal and major orchestras around the world, he approaches music with precision, humility, and an unwavering sense of service to the score and the people making it.Key TakeawaysBrad Lubman offers a thoughtful distinction between “interpretation” and serving the composer's intentions, arguing that great conducting begins with fidelity to the score rather than ego.He explains why so much of what audiences hear as a conductor's influence is actually shaped in rehearsal, not just in performance.Brad reflects on how his background as a drummer and percussionist sharpened his sense of time, touch, and physical gesture. We talk in depth about his piece Tangents and why that work marked a turning point in his life as a composer.Brad shares how key moments in his career — including his connection to Steve Reich and the New York premiere of City Life — came through preparation, reputation, and musical trust. He discusses the communal nature of orchestral music-making and his belief that an ensemble can model cooperation at the highest level. The conversation concludes with a look at his current work as a teacher, conductor, composer, and advocate for contemporary music worldwide.Music from the EpisodeMusic for 18 Musicians (Pulse) - Steve Reich (Ensemble Signal - Brad Lubman, Conductor)Radio Rewrite (I. The Outdoors Fix is a podcast to inspire you to make the outdoors a bigger part of your life. It's hosted by Liv Bolton. This week my guest is Francesca Donovan, a hiker, outdoor swimmer and co-editor of The Great Outdoors Magazine. Now, you might expect someone in that role to have grown up immersed in nature… but Francesca's background is quite different. Her childhood wasn't outdoorsy— and for a long time, she didn't see herself as someone who belonged in those spaces. It wasn't until her mid-20s, almost by accident — and initially for health reasons — that she discovered hiking, starting with day trips out into the Peak District. But what began as a small step has grown into something much bigger. Since then, Francesca has gone on to explore landscapes across the UK — from wild camping and bothy stays to cold water swimming — all while navigating what it means to find your place in the outdoors, even when you might not think you fit the traditional mould. Francesca took me on a beautiful spring walk near Pym's Chair in the Peak District — blue skies, wide-open moorland, and skylarks overhead. It was a beautiful setting for a conversation about her work on the magazine, discovering the outdoors later in life, and realising that you don't have to be a certain kind of person to belong there. I really hope you enjoy our chat — and don't forget to stay tuned for the Sounds of Nature moment at the end of the episode: a small pocket of calm to help you pause, unwind and breathe in the outdoors, wherever you are. Periodically, I choose a plant, tree or fungus to explore, only to find there is very little folklore about them. Invariably, there are two reasons for this. First, the plant, tree or fungus has little use to humans, so no one bothered much with it in the past. This sometimes applies to toxic specimens, too. You don't need to preserve knowledge about something you know to avoid, so there's no lore to pass on. Second, the plant, tree or fungus only arrived in the UK (or Europe) within the last couple of centuries. Again, this often results in sparse lore about them, much as we see with the horse chestnut or sycamore. I ran into this exact problem with the London Plane tree. I'd seen one featured in a 3-part documentary about trees, narrated by Michael Palin, on Cheapside in London. Having gone to meet it myself on a trip to the capital, I announced I'd be starting this month's Tree theme with the London Plane. And then I discovered how little folklore there actually is about them. Still, how they came about proves to be an interesting story on its own. The tale of the Cheapside Plane is worth exploring too. So while we've got less folklore than usual, there are still stories to tell. Let's go to meet the London Plane in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! EPISODE 141: The Blackbyrds were at the cutting edge of jazz fusion, R&B and funk in the 1970s, pushing the boundaries of Black popular music forward in one of the most musically fertile decades of the past century. Established by legendary jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd in 1973, the band's success includes several highly touted albums, film scores (1975's "Cornbread," "Earl and Me"), as well as supporting such iconic artists as B.B. King. Herbie Hancock, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Roberta Flack and more. The Blackbyrds' self-titled debut album put the group on the map with "Do It, Fluid," a funky laid-back party anthem. The group followed that initial success with a string of albums over the next five years, including FLYING START (1974), which yielded their biggest hit, the Grammy-nominated "Walking in Rhythm," and CITY LIFE (1975), which contained the hit "Happy Music" and the iconic "Rock Creek Park," which remains one of the most sampled jazz-funk tracks to this day, as well as such hits as “Supernatural Feeling,” Grammy-nominated “Unfinished Business,” “Time is Movin',” “Dreaming About You” and “Flyin' High,” among many others. Under the leadership of original drummer and vocalist, Keith Killgo, the band continues to record, tour and perform globally. The Blackbyrds current lineup includes original founding members Keith Killgo (drums and vocals) and Joe Hall (bass), Paul Spires (vocals), Dominique Toney (vocals), daughter of original band keyboardist Kevin Toney, Roberto Villeda (keyboards), Charles Wright (guitar), Thad Wilson (trumpet), Marshall Keys (saxophone) and Sean Anthony (percussion). blackbyrdsmusic.comContact us: makingsoundpodcast.comFollow on Instagram: @makingsoundpodcastFollow on Threads: @jannkloseJoin our Facebook GroupPlease support the show with a donation, thank you for listening!

What does it really take to move to Mexico and build a life that works financially and personally? In this episode of Live by Design - Mexico Edition, host Taniel Chemsian sits down with Justin Keltner, founder of Entrepreneur Expat, to explore the mindset shifts, practical steps, and real trade-offs involved in relocating abroad by choice, not by accident. Justin shares his firsthand experience of living in Mexico, building a business while working remotely, and settling into life in El Chante, a lesser-known but expat-friendly community. Together, they unpack common misconceptions about remote work, the realities of becoming an expat entrepreneur, and why waiting for the “perfect time” often leads to regret. This conversation covers cost of living in Mexico, community building, financial flexibility, and the emotional challenges of starting over - along with why so many Americans and Canadians are choosing Mexico for freedom, adventure, and long-term quality of life. If you're considering moving to Mexico, working abroad, or redesigning your future on your own terms, this episode offers honest insight, real experience, and actionable guidance to help you decide your next step with clarity and confidence. The mountains are often imagined as an escape from city life. A place to visit, slow down, and leave behind. But for writer Anuradha Roy, they are something else entirely. The hills near Ranikhet are where she and her husband chose to move, turning a neglected cottage into a home over more than two decades, shared with family, animals, and a carefully tended garden. In Called by the Hills, Roy reflects on a life lived close to nature but never apart from its pressures, documenting both its quiet rewards and the damage caused by climate change and unchecked development in the Himalaya. This week on the podcast, Anuradha Roy joins host Sandip Roy to talk about what it means to make a home in the mountains.Produced by Shashank BhargavaEdited and mixed by Suresh Pawar

Following the triumph of Marvels and from the ashes of a proposed sequel that fell apart, Kurt Busiek launched Astro City with Brent Anderson on interior art and Marvels collaborator Alex Ross on covers and character designs. On the series' 30th anniversary, we look at the complicated development of the series and its first six stories. We also ask some conceptual questions. Should Astro City be considered part of the larger superhero deconstructionist movement of the Iron Age, or something else entirely? Are the series' familiar-but-different superheroes “analogues” or “archetypes”? Is there such a thing as including too many Easter eggs? And what's the difference between “superheroes in the real world” and Astro City?Discussed in this episode: the first volume of Kurt Busiek's Astro City #1-6, published by Image Comics (as originally reprinted in the Life in the Big City trade paperback and other subsequent collected editions)The municipality of Astro City is probably supported with robust and progressive property taxes, but our podcast relies on listener support at patreon.com/ironageofcomics
