The Spirit is a Neo-noir superhero film based on the classic character created by Will Eisner. A live-action film version of the character had been planned for years, with William Friedkin coming close to making a movie back in the eighties. It almost got made as an animated film. In the wake of Robert Rodriguez's successful version of Sin City, that film's co-director/writer, the legendary Frank Miller, was able to get the rights. It would be done in a similar style to that film, with it shot in a largely desaturated, highly stylized form that was catching on at the time thanks to not only Sin City but also 300, which, not coincidently, was also based on Frank Miller's work.Miller would adapt the comic himself, casting Gabriel Macht as Denny Colt, the ghost-like superhero. Macht was largely unknown (he would go on to find fame on the long-running series Suits) but was surrounded by an A-list cast, including Samuel L. Jackson, Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johannson. The film would be met with derision from fans, with many taking issue with Jackson's wildly over-the-top performance as the villain, The Octopus. It lost its financier tens of millions of dollars, and Miller's only other credit as a director would come on the City City sequel, A Dame to Kill For, which reteamed him with Rodriguez. So what happened? Why was The Spirit such a box-office disaster, and does the Movie have any fans? We dig into The Spirit's making in this week's WTF Happened to this Movie, written by Gaius Bolling, edited by Cesar Gabriel, and narrated by Dave Davis.

Acomi and Turk182 ask: "What's a perfect example of having everything you need to be successful, and screwing it all up anyway?" The answer: The Spirit (2008). With enough acting talent and visual eye candy to make Hugh Hefner take notice, and a multi-talented and award winning writer and artist behind the camera, and based on an award winning graphic novel created by THE award wining comic creator, who would've thought The Spirit (2008) would be so bad even the Ghostbuster would say no to capturing him? "That's just damn weird." Marvel, DC, Dark Horse comic writer and artist Frank Miller wrote and directed this movie loosely based on the comic book series/graphic novels by Will Eisner. Police officer Denny Colt is resumed dead, but is brought back to life and fights crime as the mysterious vigilante known as The Spirit. "We was there." Dressed in a long coat and hat, with Converse sneakers, and a domino mask, and armed with twin colt pistols, and pheromones that make him irresistible to women, The Spirit fights crime in Central City and tries to bring down the underworld criminal leader known as the Octopus. "We saw it." Horrible, boring, and just damn weird... "That's just damn weird." We can't imagine the 1987 made-for-television version starring Sam Jones of Flash Gordon and Nana Visitor of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine could be any worse. Join Acomi and Turk as they curse Denny Colt being brought back to life, and the idea that a little person would recognize someone solely by a photocopy of their butt. "We was there. It's just damn weird." Let's Watch! The Spirit (2008). Acomi and Turk182, along the occasional special guest, provide running commentary of awfulsome movie and TV shows. This week on the podcast, the Two Guys with PhDs take a close look at a few #1 issues and one minicomic series. However, before they get into the nitty gritty of their reviews, they share some of the listener mail and attention they've been receiving -- including a very cool call-out from the Kyle and Drew at Comics for Fun and Profit -- and then go into some news out of SDCC. In particular, they discuss this year's Eisner Award winners, most of which the guys are familiar with and/or had expected (or hoped) to win. However, there were some surprises as well as some disappointments in this year's Eisners, but such is the game of awards systems such as this. After highlighting a little more news out of San Diego -- e.g., the announcement of new Vertigo titles, the return of Lady Killer, Fantagraphics to publish the next Kramers Ergot -- Andy and Derek plunge into the titles that they're discussing this week. First, they look at Brian K. Vaughan and Steve Skroce's We Stand on Guard #1 (Image Comics). This is one of the most anticipated new series of the year, and the guys waste no time in underscoring not only BKV's storytelling abilities, but Skroce's meticulous art. Next, they look at the latest attempt to bring The Spirit back to reading audiences. With Will Eisner's The Spirit #1 (Dynamite Entertainment), Matt Wagner and Dan Schkade capture not only the spirit -- bad pun intended -- of the original, but also introduce Eisner's crime-fighting world in such a way that brand new readers can easily get on board, even without much knowledge of the original. The same can be said of Mark Waid and Fiona Staples's Archie #1 (Archie Comics). The creators' take on the comics icon appears both fresh and reverential, making this new series accessible, yet in a familiar way. Still, the guys wonder who exactly the audience might be -- or might end up being -- for these new spins on Archie Andrews and Denny Colt. Finally, Derek and Andy turn to a minicomic series from Tim Comrie, Leisure. This is an autobiographical, very personal, series with three issues so far. Comrie lays bare both his pleasures and his turmoils, and in a genuine manner that never comes across as calculated or discomforting. The guys also bring in a discussion of Comrie's other series (along with Mike Heneghan), Five Hour Comics, and compare its style and tone to Leisure. If you're not familiar with Tim Comrie's work, then now is the time to check it out!
