We return to our rundown of Flash Gordon, just as Flash and Prince Barin are being taken to the Hawkmen's planet to fight to the death!Flash Gordon was directed by Mike Hodges, the British filmmaker behind Get Carter and Pulp, and produced by the legendary Dino De Laurentiis. Based on the King Features comic strip created by Alex Raymond, the film stars Sam J. Jones as the all-American hero Flash, Melody Anderson as Dale Arden, Ornella Muti as the dangerous Princess Aura, Max von Sydow as Ming the Merciless, and Topol as the eccentric scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov. The supporting cast includes Timothy Dalton, Brian Blessed, Peter Wyngarde, Peter Duncan and John Hallam — a line-up that reads like a who's who of cult cinema. We dig into the incredible production history of Flash Gordon, from De Laurentiis' first attempts in the 1960s to his decision to turn down George Lucas — a choice that helped inspire Star Wars. The film's troubled development included a scrapped version by Nicolas Roeg, with Debbie Harry once rumoured to play Princess Aura. Eventually, Hodges took the reins, working from a screenplay by Lorenzo Semple Jr., the same writer who brought Batman's colourful POW! ZAP! style to TV in the 1960s. That influence is clear throughout, giving Flash Gordon its unmistakable comic-book tone. The film was shot mainly at Elstree and Shepperton Studios, pushing British set design and visual effects to the limit. For the famous Hawkmen sequence, the crew built a sixty-foot-high, hundred-foot-wide blue screen powered by a million watts of light. The result is one of the most gloriously excessive moments in sci-fi history — a flying army, Brian Blessed shouting “Gordon's alive!” and Queen blasting through the speakers.Speaking of Queen, we explore how their soundtrack revolutionised film music, paving the way for rock bands to score major blockbusters. The combination of Freddie Mercury's operatic flair and Howard Blake's orchestral compositions gave Flash Gordon a sonic identity that still feels fresh today. We also look at the film's eclectic cast. Sam J. Jones' brief but memorable career, Melody Anderson's move from acting to social work, and Ornella Muti's headline-grabbing life and legal troubles. There's Max von Sydow's path from The Seventh Seal to The Exorcist and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Topol's secret links to Mossad, Timothy Dalton's long and winding journey to becoming James Bond, and Peter Wyngarde's transformation from Department S to the gold-masked villain Klytus. And, of course, the mighty Brian Blessed — mountaineer, Shakespearean thunder-god, near-astronaut, and national treasure. From I, Claudius to Doctor Who, Cats, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, and beyond, he's one of Britain's most extraordinary performers. In this episode, we unpack the layers of Flash Gordon as both cult classic and chaotic masterpiece: how its bright visuals masked a difficult shoot, how its camp sensibility influenced generations of filmmakers, and why it remains a cornerstone of British sci-fi fandom. Whether you're here for trivia, nostalgia, or the Queen soundtrack alone, this is one of our most detailed episodes yet — and we'll be back next week with part two to finish the adventure.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. Sorry this one's a bit late — but to make up for it, we've gone all in with an extra-long episode of General Witchfinders, split into two parts. This week, we take you through the extraordinary, over-the-top world of Flash Gordon (1980) — the space opera superhero film that blended camp comedy, science-fiction spectacle, and Queen's iconic soundtrack into something truly cosmic. The American fascination with spaceflight and what we might find out there began long before any human left Earth. It’s Dr. Margaret Weitekamp’s job to collect, document, and preserve the cultural artifacts that display our deep attraction to all things spacey. Her book, Space Craze, explores how these objects, ranging from 1930s Flash Gordon ray guns to Mercury space capsule cookie jars, have represented our Earthbound fears and hopes. She joined the Society’s space-crazed Mat Kaplan for a live and lively conversation. It's Flash Gordon! Not the movie with Queen, it's a Filmation joint that's so incredibly boring that we got derailed into doing an improv session about the Monarch and Mrs. Dr. the Monarch from Venture Brothers dealing with an unexpected bout of blueberry inflation.
In 2023, King Features Syndicate decided to bring Flash Gordon, originally created by Alex Raymond and first published in 1934, back from rerun purgatory with new strips, written and drawn by Dan Schkade. Dan was also the artist on Dynamite Entertainment's Will Eisner's the Spirit Returns in 2016, and is also known for his original … Continue reading #852 Dan Schkade and “Flash Gordon”
“I'm here, just taking a stroll, stretching my legs. These, uh, 300 men are my personal bodyguard.” We watched “300,” directed by Zack Snyder, and we need to hit the gym. A lot has been said of Snyder's hyperfixation on the male form, and we're here to add to that conversation. While this movie may be 117 minutes of fit men strutting around in leather briefs, it's also a pretty fun adaptation of the 1998 graphic novel by Frank Miller— author of Sin City. Gerard Butler and Lena Headey play a fierce power couple, King and Queen of Sparta, Leonidas and Gorgo. Gerry is giving us manic Brian Blessed in “Flash Gordon” realness, and Lena is serving proto-Cersei Lannister, and she's really holding her own as one of the only female speaking roles in the male-dominated movie. We also get some body beautiful from David Wenham, Michael Fassbender, and Rodrigo Santoro as the diva herself— Xerxes, the mad god-king of Persia with permanent makeup and one too many body piercings. We had our reading glasses on the entire time on patrol for any slip-ups in those banana hammocks, but as far as we could tell, there were no wardrobe malfunctions to speak of. A long time ago in a city far, far away…. A young director with several films under his belt had an idea for a movie. His idea was to create a modern version of an old space adventure film like Flash Gordon. He wrote a story that would cover several films, negotiated a groundbreaking contract, and in the process, completely changed the film industry. INTRO:I'm finally back after my NDE from a month-long bout with H1N1 earlier this year. I'm Hank Davis, a nineteen year podcasting veteran, filmmaker, and soon to be musician (more on that in the coming weeks) and this is my review of Marvel's Fantastic Four. This is a spoiler-filled review of the movie and if you are overly sensitive to satire (that may or may not be funny) this won't be the podcast for you. SETTINGS:When it comes to the sets and immersion I feel that Fantastic Four shines. This is the first Marvel movie in recent years (that I've watched anyway) that has areas which actually feel populated and expansive. Maybe there are simply more people on Earth-828. We'd need to see the census data compared to Earth-616 but I digress. The retro design of the areas, vehicles, building interiors, clothing, and household items gave me a Jetsons meets Flash Gordon vibe. I thought they nailed costumes which are darn near impeccable. The aesthetics coalesce to create a believable world that simply hasn't been present in a Marvel film in quite some time. But a world is only as good as the characters you put in it.CHARACTERS:Vanessa Kirby's Sue Storm is believable, balanced, and didn't overpower the movie like Marvel tends to do female leads.Ben Grimm's portrayal is about as spot on as there's been in any incarnation of the character. While not my favorite, Joseph Quinn's Johnny Storm is likeable but not as punchy as the Chris Evans version. Thankfully, we didn't get the awkward “how are they related” gymnastics like the 2015 version. Outside of the writing Ralph Ineson does a solid job of bringing Galactus to life on the big screen. My sister's 8th grade sports trophy springs to life as Julia Garner attempts to give us a different take on Silver Surfer. While there's nothing like the original, Shalla-Bal didn't negatively impact the movie (outside of those initial concept renderings). Ultimately she portrayed a conflicted character that was believable. I laughed out loud when Stingray from Cobra Kai rolled in as the Mole Man. I guess Cobra Kai truly never dies! It's just been driven underground.Which unfortunately leads me to Reed Richards himself portrayed by Pedro Pascal. Pedro Pascal is as much Mister Fantastic as I'm Denzel Washington. I needed to see another Pedro lead like a golf club to the head (SFX). If you know, you know. He delivers amazing lines like "I don't know." and others that make you second guess the idea that he's the smartest man alive. I am suffering from Pedro fatigue!HITS:I'll say it again, the costumes were excellent! Even though I couldn't help but itch myself uncomfortably while looking at that material, the suits were incredible. The Thing was done justice in this movie! I thought about how cool playing a video game would be as he smashed through the columns of that building. Can we get The Thing vs The Hulk please? That's one of my favorite comic book childhood matchups.I liked the blending of high and low tech items. Seeing physical records made me nostalgic but didn't take away from the sophisticated feel the film delivers. The message of world-wide unity in the face of extreme turmoil was a refreshing insertion that didn't feel like a ‘nine iron to the head' political lecture.Who doesn't love a superpowered baby? Although I wished they would have fleshed that out more in this particular movie instead of hoping I watch what's next. A cute baby trumps an obnoxious dog any day of the week. I'm looking at you James Gunn!MISSES:Galactus is estimated to be approximately 440 meters tall.

MLB Great Tom “Flash” Gordon Joins Us To Talk About His Career And The DICK's All-American Classic this Sunday at 5 p.m. at Petco Park.
In this powerful and heartfelt first part of a two-part conversation, we're joined by the insightful and compassionate Adam Skandarani—Certified Control Unleashed Instructor, Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner, and tireless advocate for both dogs with Really Big Feelings and the humans who support them. Adam takes us on their “behavior odyssey,” tracing a journey shaped by learning, unlearning, and growing alongside their two Boxers—Sansa and the unforgettable Flash Gordon. Through stories that are raw, moving, and instructive, Adam shares how Flash, with all his intensity, reactivity, and need for connection, became not just a training challenge but their greatest teacher. Together, we explore: ✅ How unmet social and medical needs can drive misunderstood behavior ✅ Why talking about behavior without discussing its context is a fruitless endeavor ✅ The power of control, decompression, and choice in building behavioral wellness ✅ Lessons from the late great Flash Gordon, ATA's honorary “Chief Remedial Socialization Officer” ✅ Practical ways to support clients navigating resistance around pain assessment ✅ The importance of trainer self-care and embracing therapeutic support This episode is a beautiful reminder that beneath every behavior lies a story—and that when we meet our learners where they are, profound transformation is possible. Dedicated to the memory of Flash, whose legacy continues to teach us all. During a peak era for Hollywood produced conspiracy thrillers, this was one of the most popular and for good reasons. It was directed by the late, great Oscar-winner Sydney Pollack (Out of Africa, Tootsie, The Firm) and starred two of the most beautiful and enduring stars of this era. Robert Redford (The Sting, Indecent Proposal) stars as Turner who is an mild-mannered analyst for the CIA who suddenly finds every one in his New York City research office brutally murdered while he went out of lunch....and now he's on the run to get answers, also before some one murders him. Along the way, he encounters Kathy played by Oscar-winner Faye Dunaway (Network, Bonnie and Clyde, Chinatown), an unusually observant painter whom he decides to kidnap while seeking shelter at her apartment....and of course they develop a romance....sort of. And hot on his heels is the wily assassin Joubert played by the late, great Max Von Sydow (The Seventh Seal, Flash Gordon, Pelle the Conqueror). What results is a tense cat-and-mouse thriller which was somewhat ahead of its time and is now about to turn Fifty! Zo somehow finds himself on a strange world. He doesn't know if he's on a different planet, timeline, dimension or reality, but the one thing that he knows for sure is that he's not in Kansas anymore! In this place there are remarkable sites: floating forest covered moons in the upper atmosphere, floating mountains, a hovering city. There are strange creatures, robots and a variety of people: winged people fill the skies, tree people haunt the forests, and soldiers in gold and red armor patrol the ground. The different tribes seem to bicker with each other, and Zo is saavy enough to understand that there is an over arching presence that oppresses them all. What they need is a unifying force that could band them together so that they might fight their common foe and free themselves from the tyranny that they all live under. Could the hero with the charisma to unify them come in the form of the New York Jets quarterback Flash Gordon? Episode Segments00:04:59 Opening Credits for Flash Gordon starring: Sam J. Based on the comic strips and subsequent film serials of the 1930s, the 1980 adaptation was seen as too weird, too cheesy, too campy, and too colorful by many at the time. Over the years, however, those same elements, along with its incredible soundtrack by Queen, have turned it from frequently mocked misfire to cult classic.John Champion of Roddneberry Entertainment joins Derick to discuss the film, its fandom, and its long journey into the cult canon. For more info, head to underratedmoviepodcast.comPatreon:https://patreon.com/UnderratedMoviePodcastInstagram:https://instagram.com/underratedmoviepodcastTikTok:https://www.tiktok.com/@underratedmoviepodcastYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAbpTHWyBle7yKJv4-gR_g

The A-bomb had contributed to this soft reign of terror. It had also fired a period of excitement and fertility in the neglected field of science fiction. Before WWII, sci-fi in film was widespread, with examples such as Lang's hallmark Metropolis, Things To Come, the silent 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, The Lost World, and serials populated by Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. The war had shifted the focus, to combat and military films, propaganda, home-front boosterism, and escapism. The war also brought awareness of the application of science to conflict. Atomic power had brought an entirely new set of horrific sci-fi characters --- as embodied by Bela Lugosi, played by Martin Landau in the film Ed Wood: “Today it's all giant bugs. Giant spiders, giant grasshoppers...” Increasingly, sci-fi enemies came from the outside, from other worlds loosening tremendous power upon the Earth, or beings from our world mutated and terribly changed by atomic power. Or sometimes, both. Aliens of all types were lurking every week at the Bijou in the 1950s. The Day The Earth Stood Still. The Thing From Another World, The War Of The Worlds. Some of these films were silly, and as characterized by Lugosi/Landau --- giant bugs. Some became classics, despite their pedigree, as in the film Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. The 1956 offering had an unlikely path to greatness, but it's stood the test of time because of the themes that run through its bones.Website and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

Oh, we also talked about R.E.M. after a long catch up at the top of the episode! But will Corey engage in some self-flagellation? Will Kev apologize for pigeon-holing Corey as an Eliminator-and-on ZZ Top fan? As we kick off ten weeks of 80s-themed episodes, we're returning to a goofy little game we invented a couple of years ago. The idea is to pluck characters from randomly selected movies from the year 1980, insert them into other movies, and discuss the ramifications. Potential movies include Flash Gordon, Caddyshack, Popeye, Xanadu, The Empire Strikes Back, and many more. So grab a hideously overpriced tub of popcorn and get comfortable. Escuchar audio

As we celebrate yet another May the 4th (be with you), Mikey, d$ and #XlessDrEarl change up their Star Wars topics a bit - instead of fave scenes or ranking the movies, this time, its a look at all the movies that Star Wars inspired... some that turned out to be legendary... some that turned out to be legendarily bad... Can't Force alone, so the crew invites in Fan Fave and longtime friend of the show Hurricane Rhett Barnett, and he gives his own take on the 2024 comedy horror movie "Heretic" as well as a brief chat about the rerelease of "Revenge of the Sith", which has Mikey using the word "Refractory" and Rhett using the phrase "Marital Bed". Then they play what turns about to be a disastrous version of "Everything Everywhere All At Once Upon a Time in Hollywood", which may end up being retired at some point because no one can play the stupid thing (note: d$'s opinion). Then, a top five of Star Wars Adjacent, with some classic Flash Gordon and a chat about Sam Jones and Jacko (OY!), plus star fighters and dark stars and stars with battles beyond them, plus a glave, a hole, Ridley Scott's inspiration, and even kitchen appliances in a classic short film.
Some people think Mike Hodges' 1980 Flash Gordon movie is cheesy trash and hate it; others think it's over-the-top hilarious and enjoy it. But some weirdos truly LOVE this exercise in tonal whiplash, and your humble hosts are two such men. We'll talk about the film as an adaptation of both the original Alex Raymond source material and the Buster Crabbe serials, and how it proudly defies Star Wars' revisionist sci-fi aesthetic. But we'll also try to dig underneath the spectacle to expose the genuinely rousing humanistic heroism at this movie's core. Plus: more beloved character actors than you'll know what to do with!Want to hear the rest? Support us at patreon.com/ironageofcomics !
Pathetic Earthlings, who can save you now?Well, there might be one guy...Flash Gordon has been on our screens for almost 90 years, and the story of the dashing all-American hero, his companions, and his battles against Ming the Merciless laid the groundwork for modern sci-fi, influencing everything from Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek and Doctor Who.From his humble comic strip roots, Flash's adventures were perfect for a modern film adaptation, and legendary film mogul Dino De Laurentiis was adamant he knew what he wanted for his Flash Gordon; a visual feast, a lavish production, a playful tone and his friend Danilo Donati as the production and costume designer. From its colourful costumes to its campy dialogue, Flash Gordon is a spectacle that has transcended time, and cinema owes Flash a huge debt of gratitude, but it was not an easy movie to make. Its original director Nicolas Roeg ended up leaving after a year, and Mike Hodges stepped up, but with very little control over what you see on screen. Queen's iconic soundtrack for Flash Gordon was groundbreaking, blending rock music with film scoring in a way that had never been done before. Flash Gordon remains a cult classic, influencing generations of filmmakers and fans, and continues to be celebrated for its unique charm and creativity. Despite the issues behind the scenes, and the behaviour of their leading man, Flash Gordon has an undeniable charm that has kept it alive in the hearts of fans worldwide. It alive? Sorry, I meant...
