When Dynamite solicited the return of The Herculoids into the comics medium, I was immediately concerned. Oh no, who's writing it? It is such a beloved childhood property of mine. Who could do it justice? Then my fears were allayed when saw Tom Sniegoski was at the reins. Given his background working on other major properties like Hellboy and Vampirella with their own distinct and important legacies, I knew he'd be the perfect fit. I'd been meaning to catch up with Tom for quite some time now so this was the perfect opportunity to get him back on the show to dive into what turns out is a shared love of this weird old Hanna Barbera cartoon property. In the episode, Tom shares his childhood connection to it, the challenges of translating all these non-speaking creatures front and center in comic book form, and the collaboration process with artist Craig Rousseau to interpret the original designs of Alex Toth. We also carve out some time to hear about his other projects and how comics can engage new young readers, something I always seem to be bringing up lately. The Herculoids hits shelves this February. Make sure to call your shop and reserve a copy. That Mignola cover will move fast y'all. From the publisher Building on the success of the critically acclaimed and bestselling Space Ghost series, Dynamite Entertainment is proud to bring another beloved Hanna-Barbera classic to readers this February - The Herculoids! Hidden in the furthest reaches of space, the planet of Amzot is legendary for its fabled riches - and for the terrible fates that befall anybody who seeks to exploit them... Those who survive their encounters tell blood-chilling tales of horrific, imposing monsters that guard the mysterious world - yet the lure of its abundant resources is too great to resist. Raiders and pirates continue to come from across the galaxy, and there is only one force strong enough to stop their constant attacks - The Herculoids! But as strong as these defenders are, a recent battle may have pushed Amzot to its limits - and awakened a sleeping darkness within the planet itself! Written by TOM SNIEGOSKI (Vampirella, Hellboy) and drawn by CRAIG ROUSSEAU (Batman Beyond, Gotham Adventures), The Herculoids #1 features a wealth of covers from some of the galaxy's most talented artists, including FRANCESCO MATTINA, JOSEPH MICHAEL LINSNER, BJORN BARENDS, FELIPE MASSAFERA, and the legendary creator of Hellboy, MIKE MIGNOLA! It's special episode #675 this week, and to celebrate, I talk with Tom Sniegoski, who is the scripter for the upcoming Herculoids series from Dynamite Entertainment! Tom and I talk about the animated series that started it all as well as take a deep dive into the various characters and what made this show a favorite of fans even decades later! Here's how the comic is described: “The legendary planet of Amzot sits in the far reaches of deepest, darkest space. It's a planet of extreme riches, but those who seek it out are routinely struck by untold disaster and terrible fates. Anyone who manages to survive to tell the tale speaks of horrific, imposing guardian monsters that protect it. Yet raiders and explorers continue coming, only to meet the Herculoids again and again! Set to debut in February 2025, the creators invite fans to adventure with the Herculoids as they protect their home, and even they will learn even bigger secrets about their planet.” Tom also discusses the art from collaborator Craig Rousseau, which many fans are also already looking forward to enjoying! Today I'm joined by comics writer Joe Casey. Joe's comics cv includes writing for big Marvel properties like Cable and the X-Men, Automatic Kafka for Wildstorm, Wildcats, Superman for DC, or the Eisner Nominated Godland. Beyond the realm of comics, he's a part of the Man of Action Entertainment Studio who created the wildly successful Ben 10 and Generator Rex cartoon franchises and they are the producers and story editors for Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble for Disney, and let's not forget Big Hero 6 either. He is now turning his attention towards revitalizing the Hanna Barbera cartoon classic Jonny Quest for Dynamite Entertainment in comics form, or at least for the purposes of our chat today so don't get too excited cartoon fans, with artist Sebastian Piriz. Admittedly, not all of these cartoon IP relaunches have impressed but Jonny Quest is damn good from what I've seen, not reinventing the characters but providing a platform for them to adapt into a modern structure and to explore the family and cultural dynamics inherent to the series. Pick it up. From the publisher Get ready to climb aboard the Sea Quest and embark for adventure once more! Legendary boy explorer JONNY QUEST is back, along with his intrepid scientist dad Dr. Benton Quest, bodyguard "Race" Bannon, adopted brother Hadji, and all the rest of the beloved cast from the classic animated series! Launching out of its issue #0 prelude story in Dynamite's 2024 Free Comic Book Day release, this action-packed new title begins where the show left off in 1964, but things quickly take a turn for the uncanny as they team returns from an experiment at sea to their home base in Palm Key, only to discover that the once-familiar landscape is now strangely, disquietingly different! Superstar writer JOE CASEY (Superman, Ben 10) and powerhouse artist SEBASTIAN PIRIZ (We Ride Titans, Deadweights) join together to bring you the brand-new tales of Jonny and the Quest team that the world has been waiting for - all enhanced by fully frameable covers from CHAD HARDIN, JAE LEE & JUNE CHUNG, TOM RANEY, BOB LAYTON, and RICHARD PACE! This episode contains explicit language and talk of sexual assault. On this episode, we take a butcher's at the book that begat the critically acclaimed streaming series The Boys—specifically, The Name of the Game, collecting the first six issues of The Boys by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, originally published by WildStorm Productions and later collected by Dynamite Entertainment! When Hughie Campbell's girlfriend is killed during a superpowered battle, he's recruited by Billy the Butcher to join The Boys, a CIA-sanctioned squad of humans tasked with monitoring the superhero community and acting when they step out of line. Meanwhile, Annie January, aka Starlight, achieves her lifelong dream of joining the world's premier superteam, The Seven—only to find that the world's greatest heroes are corrupt, narcissistic, cruel ... and worse. And Hughie quickly learns that his new gig isn't all it's cracked up to be, either. Can these two innocents navigate this unpleasant new world without losing their souls? And can this book filled with sex, graphic violence and gross-out gags survive a meeting with that Human Resources department known as ... The Comics Canon? I'm delighted to introduce first time visitor Kelly Thompson on the show. Kelly is an Eisner Award winning comics writer with big title credits on Jem and the Holograms, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Birds of Prey amongst quite a few more and recently has been diving into the creator owned space with personal favs of mine The Cull and Black Cloak. She's working with a new publisher now helping Skybound revitalize the GI Joe franchise with the forthcoming Scarlett mini-series bringing Jane to Gi Joe. We recorded the day she heard about the five 2024 Eisner nominations which as you imagine we celebrated a little bit and carved out a little time to touch on more girl power with the forthcoming Power Puff Girls release from Dynamite Entertainment, and also got a little sidetracked chatting about the real life location featured in The Cull. Kelly has to be one of the most delightful and open guests I've ever had on the show. Make sure to sign up for her Substack to stay up to date on all the happenings and look for Scarlett hitting your LCS in early June. From the publisher: Red-hot writer Kelly Thompson (Black Widow, Birds of Prey) and artist Marco Ferrari (Frontiersman) introduce some of the most anticipated characters to the Energon Universe in ways you'll never expect in Scarlett #1, launching June 5, 2024. Shana “Scarlett” O'Hara is about to take on the most dangerous black ops mission of her career: infiltrating the mysterious rising power in Japan known as the Arashikage Clan. Her one lead is her former partner—Jinx—turned Arashikage enforcer. Now, Scarlett must use her skills to survive undercover… and discover a shocking weapon that could change the balance of power on Earth. Our episode sponsor Play TTRPG games? Howard and first published in the September 1933 issue of Weird Tales magazine. "The Slithering Shadow" is the original title, but the story is also known as "Xuthal of the Dusk" in further publications. The story was republished in the collections The Sword of Conan (Gnome Press, 1952) and Conan the Adventurer (Lancer Books, 1966). It has more recently been published in the collections The Conan Chronicles Volume 1: The People of the Black Circle (Gollancz, 2000) as "The Slithering Shadow" and in Conan of Cimmeria: Volume One (1932-1933) (Wandering Star, 2002) and The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian (Del Rey, 2003) as "Xuthal of the Dusk."
