WTF Happened To....?!

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 10, 2023 15:19

The Spirit is a Neo-noir superhero film based on the classic character created by Will Eisner. A live-action film version of the character had been planned for years, with William Friedkin coming close to making a movie back in the eighties. It almost got made as an animated film. In the wake of Robert Rodriguez's successful version of Sin City, that film's co-director/writer, the legendary Frank Miller, was able to get the rights. It would be done in a similar style to that film, with it shot in a largely desaturated, highly stylized form that was catching on at the time thanks to not only Sin City but also 300, which, not coincidently, was also based on Frank Miller's work.Miller would adapt the comic himself, casting Gabriel Macht as Denny Colt, the ghost-like superhero. Macht was largely unknown (he would go on to find fame on the long-running series Suits) but was surrounded by an A-list cast, including Samuel L. Jackson, Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johannson. The film would be met with derision from fans, with many taking issue with Jackson's wildly over-the-top performance as the villain, The Octopus. It lost its financier tens of millions of dollars, and Miller's only other credit as a director would come on the City City sequel, A Dame to Kill For, which reteamed him with Rodriguez. So what happened? Why was The Spirit such a box-office disaster, and does the Movie have any fans? We dig into The Spirit's making in this week's WTF Happened to this Movie, written by Gaius Bolling, edited by Cesar Gabriel, and narrated by Dave Davis.

If you ever find yourself at the losing end of a creepy haunting/possession/poltergeist, then there's only one person you should ever consider going to for help. He's casually cool, he's got the best emotional support in the world, and he's totally… Odd.(Recorded on June 09, 2022)Links to Stuff We Mentioned:Odd Thomas (2013) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Stephen Sommers — The Movie Database (TMDB)Anton Yelchin — The Movie Database (TMDB)Addison Timlin — The Movie Database (TMDB)Willem Dafoe — The Movie Database (TMDB)Gugu Mbatha-Raw — The Movie Database (TMDB)John Constantine - WikipediaMeet Joe Black (1998) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Dean Koontz - WikipediaSin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Incredibles 2 (2018) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Top Gun: Maverick (2022) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Suicide Squad (2016) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Murder, She Wrote (TV Series 1984–1996) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Bruce Lee - WikipediaDick Tracy - WikipediaSpider-Man (TV Series 1994–1998) — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Batman (2022) — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Mummy (1999) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Deadpool 2 (2018) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Scrubs (TV Series 2001–2010) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Follow Us:Give us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts! Our Instagram profile! Our Twitter profile!

Career Q&A with Christopher Meloni. Moderated by Jenelle Riley, Variety. Washington, D.C. native Christopher Meloni studied acting at the University of Colorado, Boulder, before graduating with a degree in History. He worked in construction and as a bouncer before breaking into acting, studying his craft in New York with legendary teacher Sanford Meisner. His television breakout role was on “NYPD Blue,” opposite Kim Delaney. That led to being cast on HBO's gritty landmark series “Oz,” playing the psychotic, bisexual serial killer, ‘Chris Keller.' In 1999, Meloni landed his starring role on the popular and long-running NBC series “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” with the actor working in both series simultaneously until “Oz” ended its 6 year run in 2003. He continued on “Law & Order: SVU” for twelve seasons, earning an Emmy nomination for his performance as Detective Elliot Stabler. Meloni then returned to HBO in a pivotal arc as the head of the Vampire Authority, ‘Roman,' in Alan Ball's wildly popular drama, “True Blood;” and as Julie Louis-Dreyfus' trainer, ‘Ray,' in “Veep.” Meloni is currently co-starring in the Netflix limited event series, “Wet Hot American Summer” which is the prequel to the cult film in which he also co-starred. Meloni's other big screen credits include the August 2015 Sony Classics release, "Diary of a Teenage Girl " with Kristen Wiig; Greg Araki's "White Bird in a Blizzard"; "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For"; "Man of Steel"; "42"; "They Came Together"; "Small Time"; the Terry Gilliam films "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and "Twelve Monkeys"; the Wachowskis' first film "Bound"; the romantic comedy blockbuster "Runaway Bride"; "Nights in Rodanthe"; and such cult favorites as "Wet Hot American Summer", "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle", and its first sequel, "Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay".

Elizabeth Reed Aden's literary accomplishments are intertwined with those of Eunice Mays Boyd, her godmother. Elizabeth, or Betsy as she is known to friends, found sanctuary in Eunice's Berkeley home during the student riots of 1969 in the “battle” for People's Park. There she read a draft of Eunice's last mystery, A Vacation to Kill For. Watching Eunice go through the process of writing ultimately inspired Betsy to write her own book. The Goldilocks Genome (to be published by TouchPoint Press), is a medical thriller based on her deep knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry. Her next book HEPATITIS Beach -- From Beach to Boardroom in a pre-#MeToo World (to be published in 2024) focuses on her time and research in Melanesia, where she did her doctoral research. She studied the natural history of hepatitis B virus on a remote island with no Western amenities, went native, and found time to enjoy the beach. During the 1970's it was a very different and challenging environment for a woman in Academia. She describes how she navigated the pre-#MeToo world and her rite of passage into a successful career in the pharmaceutical industry. In episode 269 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out why Elizabeth chose UC Berkeley, why most prescription drugs have a Goldilocks Effect, how we can reduce healthcare costs on the American people, how your DNA can impact alcohol abuse in college, how we can increase hope for folks with Neurodegenerative and Cardiovascular Diseases, what companies she's working with now, how she knows whether a start-up will be a winner, and advice to college students who want to start their own business. The results were far beyond what I had ever imagined. It allows me to reach more people than I could ever do with just my blog alone, and at the same time create a much deeper connection with them too. Beyond that, it has opened up doors to my filmmaking career, keynote speaking opportunities, potential book deals and more.THANK YOU TRIBE!Without you, the Indie Film Hustle Tribe, the IFH Podcast would had never reached episode 100 or become the #1 filmmaking podcast on iTunes! I'm looking out my window, watching the neighbors walk by with their dogs. Two boys on their bikes rode by, laughing with their heads thrown back at who knows what. The trees swaying signals a breeze that caused me to grab a jacket on my way out. The flag on my mailbox is down, reminding me our postman, Todd, picked up our outgoing mail today and likely left a pleothera of campaign ads and bills behind.Neighbors. Dogs. Boys on bikes. Laughing. Cool breeze. Jackets. Mailman. All seemingly normal things. Hardly noticed prior to March 2020. But now? I find it's the little things that remind me of life before COVID especially meaningful. In fact, those things cause gratitude to fill my heart and leak out of my mouth. Have we stopped to express our gratitude for these things lately?I think of myself as a grateful person, but reading Janice Kaplan's book, The Gratitude Diaries, made me aware of many other ways I could show my gratitude. Her year-long "experiment" of being intentional about expressing gratitude transformed her life. It transformed her marriage. Her relationship with her sons. How she viewed her work. How nature was an antidote to stress. How stopping to be grateful for the food she ate helped her savor her food instead of just eating to curb the hunger. Those really are big transformations! She also learned to appreciate the big and small things she already had instead of always seeking to have the next new shiny thing. She shared, "we must find the joy in what we have." Visit janicekaplan.com to learn more about her.
