Lance and Jeremy (The Geekly Grind) share their thoughts and takeaways from Darwyn Cooke and Dave Stewart's masterpiece. The New Frontier brilliantly serves as an allegory for social injustice and political change during the 1940s and 1950s in the United States, with an injection of the shifting comic landscape from the Golden to Silver Age.  If you want to connect even more, you can join our Discord where we have a dedicated channel just for the book club!

It's Adam's turn to pick an all time favorite, and it just happens to be more Darwyn Cooke! We're talking about the early 2000's love letter to Will Eisner's The Spirit.  We can't think of anyone more equipped to embody the (dare we say it) spirit of Will Eisner than the great Darwyn Cooke.  And with Dave Steward and J. Bone backing him up, this book set the tone for comic visual storytelling that still persists today.   Support Tales From The Short Box by joining our Patreon! patreon.com/BraveNewWorldsComics

For this week's episode, we knocked some dust off Cacey's To-Be-Read pile and dug into PARKER: THE HUNTER by Richard Stark & Darwyn Cooke! This quintessential hard-boiled crime noir was adapted from the novel of the same name from 1963, and in 2010 it was rendered in a simple, 3 color palette with effortless elegance as only Darwyn Cooke could do it! This introductory story for Parker is all about him returning from an attempted murder, exacting his revenge on all who deserve it, and getting back what he is owed. It's a nonstop odyssey of abject violence, and a masterclass in sequential storytelling

Parker is arguably one of the hardest hard-boiled characters in all of crime fiction and the original novels feature stories and prose that are as uncompromising as he is. Giles also recommends Darwyn Cooke's adaptations of Richard Stark's Parker stories. You can find a list of all the upcoming books on the Facebook page, follow the podcast on instagram, or email me comments and suggestions to MCBCpodcast@gmail.comMusic used in this episode is Circuit Breaker by the artist Robodub. Screw It, We're Just Gonna Talk About Spider-Man

We go over the first arc in the Ed Brubaker Catwoman series. Guess what: it's good! We've got: Darwyn Cooke art, film noir aesthetics, questions of good versus evil, a for-real supervillain, a little Batman which all adds up to a great story. __ SHOW INFORMATION  Twitter: @ScrewItComics Instagram: @ScrewItComics  Email: ScrewItComics@gmail.com  Subscribe: Apple Podcasts  Subscribe: Spotify

Screw It, We're Just Gonna Talk About Spider-Man

We cover one of the all-time great comic book stories: Selina's Big Score. Written and drawn by Darwyn Cooke, this story is a masterpiece of crime fiction, active storytelling, redefining a classic character all with some of the prettiest art you could hope to see. There's echoes of crime fiction author Richard Stark in here (there's a character named after him), but also reminders of classic 1980s superhero crime stories by Frank Miller, Klaus Janson and David Mazzuchelli. Truly a pleasure to read. Also Will learns that Kevin loves Zelda video games! It's noir time again as we revisit some Ed Brubaker! This time, we're covering his Catwoman run with artists Darwyn Cooke and Mike Allred which starts in The Dark End of the Street, a collection that contains two whole stories! The first is Slam Bradley on the hunt for Catwoman which originally ran as backups in Detective Comics 759-762, and then we jump into Catwoman #1-4 from 2002. And then it's more Batman as we continue Knightfall Chapter 13 with a strange Two-Face tie-in from Showcase '93 #7. -- Don't forget, Chris & Nick will be doing a live recording of the Your Stupid Minds podcast at Comicpalooza in Houston, TX on Friday, May 26 at 4:30 PM central.  They'll be covering the 2004 Catwoman movie! -- Next Time: X-Men - Days of Future Past (Uncanny X-Men 138-143)
