Today, we're featuring an episode from our sister podcast, Shay Castle's Boulder Valley Frequency, about a pair of mountain women breathing life into Ward's Hotel Columbia, which just opened its doors after a year and a half of renovations. A few months ago, Shay paid a visit to Hotel Columbia and its new owners, Masyn Moyer and Gurjeet Gill, to find out what possessed them to renovate the old building. It's a story of perseverance and preservation — two things that the town of Ward is certainly known for. Join our next FASO Show Live!https://artists.boldbrush.com/p/the-faso-showLearn the magic of marketing with us here at BoldBrush!boldbrushshow.comGet over 50% off your first year on your artist website with FASO:FASO.com/podcast---For today's episode, we sat down with Todd Williams, a Nebraska-born impressionistic oil painter who discovered his calling as a child, went on to study at the Kansas City Art Institute, worked a decade as an illustrator for Hallmark, and has since spent about 25 years as a full-time fine artist represented by major galleries. His work is driven by a desire to evoke emotion at both a distance and up close, with paint quality, broken color, and expressive brushwork often carrying as much weight as the subject itself. Technically, he emphasizes the “science” of painting—values, composition, clean value planes, and his value–color–mixture approach—as the left-brain foundation that lets him later enter a childlike, intuitive “spirit of painting” mode. A major milestone was his Legacy Nebraska Collection, a five-year project tied to Nebraska's sesquicentennial that deepened his connection to place, history, and Native American subjects, and led naturally into his current series of bold, expressive Native American portraits and Western work. His advice to artists centers on perseverance, choosing strong and simple subjects to set yourself up for success, learning from both failures and wins, and accepting the ongoing tension between painting what sells and painting what most moves you. Over time, his definition of success has shifted from financial hunger and high output toward health, spiritual grounding, contentment, and relationships—treating the studio as a sacred space and the artistic journey itself as the true destination. Finally, Todd tells us about his upcoming activities, including teaching workshops with the Indiana Heritage Arts group in Nashville, Indiana and at the Merrick County Museum in his hometown of Central City, Nebraska, participating in ongoing and future Western-themed exhibitions (such as at the Museum of Western Art in Kerrville and Settlers West Gallery in Tucson), and contributing to the traveling “Painting the Arkansas Parks” exhibition organized through the Heart of America Artists for 2026–2027.Todd's FASO site:toddwilliamsfineart.com/Todd's Social Media:instagram.com/toddwilliamsfineart/
Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger has defended the co‑governance model of the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor Regeneration Committee, which is investigating potential regeneration of the residential red zone. He says progress had stalled, and locals wanted the council to “get on with it.” “It was going round in circles, so we decided to grab it by the throat, sit down, and get on with it and make decisions.” The City Council has agreed to engage with community housing providers, Kāinga Ora, iwi, charitable trusts, and private developers, focusing on more than 10 hectares of red‑zoned land. Speaking to Canterbury Mornings, Mauger also acknowledged concerns from central city residents about the rise of Airbnbs in the Christchurch CBD, but believes the market will correct itself. “If there are a lot of Ubers around, the price goes down. If there are a lot of Airbnbs, the price will go down, and people will think, ‘I'm not making money from this,' and put them back on the market.” “So it'll sort itself out, I'm sure.” Mauger also discussed his idea to establish a solar farm in Bexley, as well as his views on the Government's push for council amalgamations. Quite rightly, people living in the central city in Christchurch have had a gutsful of the number of places being rented out as Airbnb-type accommodation. They're speaking out today, saying they don't want to live in what they call “pretend neighbourhoods”. And they want action. And I'm with them. Because I reckon the council has sat on its hands way too long on this one. It seems to me that it's been happy to turn a blind eye to what's going on, in the belief that having so many Airbnbs in the centre of town is some sort of sign of progress. But it's not. Because, the way it's turned out, it's working completely against the council's objective of having more people living permanently in the centre of town. These residents aren't imagining things, either. Because the numbers back them up. In the last year, 484 new homes were built in the central city - but the number of people living permanently in the area in that same period has only increased by 50. That's less than 1 percent growth in the number of people living in the centre of town. So what's happening with the rest of the apartments and townhouses? Some might still be on the market. But, again, here are some more numbers to back up what these central city residents are saying. In one new development, residents there say about 80 percent of the places have become Airbnb-type properties. At another one, on the corner of Kilmore and Manchester streets, where there are 25 new townhouses and the people living there reckon only four of them appear to be occupied by long-term residents. As one of these central city residents is saying today: “I don't want to live in a pretend neighbourhood.” Ester Vallero is her name. She moved into the central city quite a while ago, in 2018. She says, since then, the number of homes around her place has increased. But, as she put it, the excitement of getting new neighbours and the promise of living in a vibrant central city has fallen flat because of the number of places that have been snapped up and being rented out as holiday accommodation. As another central city resident says, being surrounded by Airbnbs is worse than living next to a hotel. Because there's no reception, no security and the cleaners only deal with the inside of the property. And so it's the permanent residents living nearby - like him - who end up dealing with things like overflowing rubbish and recycling bins. There is a tiny, tiny bit of hope on the horizon. Because, next month, Christchurch city councillors will decide whether to make property owners renting out places for holiday accommodation pay business rates, instead of residential rates. They'll also decide whether to change resource consent requirements for owners renting out their places for holiday accommodation. But I don't think that goes far enough. Because that won't necessarily lead to less Airbnbs. What would, though, is doing what's been done in other cities around the world. In Barcelona, for example, by 2028 there'll be no short-term apartment rentals. The idea behind that is to get more people living full-time in these places. Now, I'm not saying we should go that hardcore, but I think a limit on the number of places in the centre of town that can be used for Airbnb accommodation would be a great start. Many of us in the South were lucky enough to grow up surrounded by women whose devotion to family and culinary skills filled our lives with delicious food. This week, we pay tribute to those flavor mavens with a trio of interviews celebrating Southern women's culinary voices. We begin with Toni Tipton-Martin, who serves as editor-in-chief for Cook's Country magazine, which is published by America's Test Kitchen. Although Toni is not a Southerner by birth, through her role at ATK, she developed a passion for Southern cooking, with a special fascination for the women who played such an influential part in its development. Along with TV personality Morgan Bolling, Toni recently shepherded the publication of When Southern Women Cook, which features 300 recipes and stories from 70 Southern contributors. Next, we speak to Kaitlin Guerin, the New Orleans gal who was the first baker in the U.S. to become a finalist in the emerging chef category of the prestigious James Beard Awards. We hear how she reached that lofty position and what she's creating at Lagniappe Bakehouse, her Central City shop that's getting such national attention. Finally, we speak with a new voice of the South, Vassiliki Ellwood Yiagazis, owner of Smoke & Honey in New Orleans. The restaurant and menu draw on Vassiliki's Jewish heritage and her upbringing in Greece. For more of all things Louisiana Eats, be sure to visit us at PoppyTooker.com.

Jet Tila is known as a TV chef these days, thanks to his many appearances on the Food Network and elsewhere, but he has actually been working in the restaurant industry for pretty much his whole life. Having grown up working in his parents' Thai restaurants in Los Angeles, he then attended culinary school and went on to cook at a wide variety of foodservice operations, including Compass Group subsidiary Bon Appétit Management and at Steve Wynn properties in Las Vegas. He also operates five Dragon Tiger Noodle restaurants—four in Nevada and one at the Dragon Tiger Casino in Central City, Colorado—and is the research & development chef of fast-casual Pei Wei Asian Kitchen, with some 120 restaurants across the country. Tila was a keynote speaker at US Foods' recent Food Fanatics conference in Las Vegas, where he walked the 5,000 attendees through his own humble beginnings and ultimately his success as a TV personality and cookbook author as well as a chef and restaurateur. He also performed cooking demonstrations at the conference, including one for birria fried rice. One of his passions these days is Chino-Latino cooking, exploring the ways that East Asian and Latin American flavors go together. During these stressful times people are turning to comfort food, he believes, whether that's fried chicken sandwiches, noodles or Tila's particular passion, fried rice. He discussed his own passion for “grandma cooking,” and shared his perspective on where food is going these days.
Coach Edecker reviews a productive inter‑squad scrimmage that revealed improved passing, valuable reps for many players, and areas for the offensive line to tighten up. Looking ahead, the Warriors face a challenging opener at Central City, a turf road game later in the month, and a plan to use more one‑way players to stay fresh late in games. The team is optimistic but realistic as the season begins.

The League is back on Earth, but they encounter some things they could not expect! Talking Gorillas, mind control, and a hidden city in Africa are just some of the surprises. Gorilla City is protected by a force field that makes it look like a mountain. The city is populated with evolved Gorillas with advanced technology. One of their own, Grodd, has made a play for power but was thwarted, and so he escapes to the U.S. With the help of scientist Dr. Sasha Corwin, he is using mind control to build the Gorilla City shield in Central City. The Flash and Green Lantern are drawn in to the situation, but a "run before you know the details" Flash gets caught unaware, and falls under mind controll. Fortunately, Solovar, a good Gorilla from Gorilla City, has come to stop Grodd and the three of them team up in the pursuit. Grodd gets the jump on them though, and is able to turn on his force field causing Central City to disappear! Batman and the rest of the league find Gorilla city and try to find out what is going on but are captured. Grodd fires nuclear missiles at the city and turns off their shield. Green Lantern and the rest of the League stop the missiles just in time. Flash uses his super speed to rewire Grodd's mind control helmet to fry his brain. The Whisperer, a 1951 summer replacement radio show on NBC, aired 13 episodes with a tongue-in-cheek take on popular crime dramas. The story, based on works by Dr. Stetson Humphrey and his wife, Irene, centered on lawyer Philip Gault (Carleton G. Young). After a football injury left him with a whispery voice, Gault used this unique trait to infiltrate the criminal syndicate in Central City. Under the alias "The Whisperer," he worked to dismantle the organization from within. Even after surgery restored his normal voice, he continued his double life, strategically passing on instructions from the syndicate's New York bosses to their Central City operatives, ultimately leading to their downfall. The show's final episode revealed Gault's backstory, detailing his journey from football player to double agent. His girlfriend, Ellen Norris (Betty Moran), and Dr. Lee were the only individuals aware of his dual identity. The cast also included Paul Frees as Lt. Charles Denvers and William Conrad, using the pseudonym Julius Krelboyne, in various supporting roles. Bill Karn served as producer, director, and occasional writer, with Johnny Duffy contributing the background music. Notably, radio actor Carleton G. Young is sometimes mistakenly identified as film actor Carleton Scott Young. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dwight-allen0/support
