Today in 1865, the birthday of Warren Harding, 29th president of the United States. His presidency was full of scandals thanks to his so-called friends - if only those friends had been as good to Harding as his dogs had been. Literary Loitering | Cultural Anarchy with Books and The Arts
Under normal circumstances (or what passes as normal around here), we’d take our rickety wagon of cultural anarchy and meander along until we found some oddity or weirdness that we could talk about, but at certain points in the time someone else kindly does the job for us. That’s right. It’s time for one of our favourite annual awards - The Bookseller’s Diagram Prize for the Oddest Book Title of the Year! But before we get into that there are a few items of note, like Isabella Rossellini’s bizarre “one woman” show that had her sporting novelty gorilla arms (which, contrary to the review we found, we thought sounded amazing), the winner of the Man Booker Prize, and the fact that copies of Wasted: Tales of a Gen X Drunk by Mark Judge (who is a college friend of controversial supreme court judge Brett Kavanaugh), are suddenly very hard to get a hold of … We end the show with our thoughts on Halcyon by Rio Youers. What happens to a book when it wins an award? What influence does the win have on readers, publishers and authors? We discuss different kinds of awards, whether there should be more and the few instances where awards have been rejected. Not to mention less-known awards like the Bad Sex Award and the Diagram Prize for Oddest Title of the Year. What. While we lament the fact that Nipples On My Knee didn’t win the Diagram Prize, Grr Martin makes some interesting announcements about books. In other news, beloved children's book and TV character (and first UK cosplayer), Mr. Benn may get an opera, Philip Pullman wants “pernicious” book discounts to stop, and Hillary Clinton writes a book about the 2016 election. We also have a quiz about closing lines from famous novels. #LiteraryLoitering #TheGeekShow #Books #Novels #Arts #Theatre #News #Reviews #Podcasts

With new ideas about what the Voynich Manuscript actually is, disarmingly obvious sanity for libraries from Sydney, and more strange words added to the Oxford English Dictionary it’s just another day at the office for us. Oh, and we kind of have a quiz about the 2017 Diagram Prize for the Oddest Book Title of the Year, but like everything in this episode that gets derailed. Our featured book is Warlock Holmes: The Hell-Hound of the Baskervilles by G. S. Denning. #WarlockHolmes #TheHellHoundOfTheBaskervilles #GSDenning #TitanBooks #LiteraryLoitering #TheGeekShow #Books #Novels #Arts #Theatre #News #Reviews #Podcasts
