The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the one-hundredth-and-thirtieth episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by MAJ Amy Beatty, the Task Force Executive Officer Observer-Coach-Trainer from Task Force Sustainment (Division Sustainment Support Battalion / Light Support Battalion) on behalf of the Commander of Ops Group (COG). Today's guest is MAJ Alice Bechtol, the Executive Officer for the 325th Light Support Battalion of 3rd Mobile Brigade, 25th Infantry Division. The 325th Light Support Battalion, known by its Hollywood call sign “Mustang” and guided by the motto “Support to the Front,” serves as the sustainment backbone of 3rd Brigade Combat Team. Stationed in Hawaii and aligned to fight in the Indo-Pacific, the battalion traces its lineage to the Army's modular transformation era, evolving from a Brigade Support Battalion into a Light Support Battalion under the Army's restructuring efforts. As part of the “Bronco” Brigade within the 25th Infantry Division, the 325th LSB has adapted its structure and sustainment concepts to meet the demands of archipelagic and jungle operations, emphasizing smaller distribution packages, agile base cluster designs, and expeditionary logistics capable of supporting dispersed maneuver forces across restrictive terrain. This episode examines lessons learned from a Light Support Battalion (LSB) executing a DATE-Pacific archipelago rotation at JPMRC, with a strong focus on sustainment command-and-control, base cluster design, and staff proficiency under high turnover. A central theme is the deliberate investment in MDMP repetitions prior to deployment—conducting multiple internal reps despite 80% personnel turnover—to build shared understanding and accelerate staff performance in the box. Leaders discuss the importance of not waiting for a “perfect” higher headquarters order, instead executing concurrent MDMP, publishing early, and refining through FRAGOs to maintain tempo. The battalion's approach to battle tracking—assigning mission numbers to both forecasted and unforecasted sustainment requirements—allowed the staff to regain control of chaotic demand signals and manage flash taskings without losing visibility. Additionally, the LSB experimented with splitting its staff between tactical and main command posts to preserve survivability while maintaining continuity in day/night operations, accepting friction in order to train to the harder standard. The discussion also highlights the sustainment realities of operating in a Pacific archipelago environment, where terrain, vegetation, and dispersed maneuver elements require smaller, more agile distribution packages. Leaders describe efforts to break bulk commodities down earlier in the sustainment chain, leverage smaller platforms, experiment with caches, and refine fuel and water distribution concepts to better support infantry formations operating at slower movement rates in restrictive terrain. Integration with the Division Sustainment Brigade under the new R-struct proved beneficial, particularly through synchronized battle rhythms and shared intelligence and communications awareness, while maintaining strong habitual relationships with maneuver battalions and their Combat Logistics Companies (CLCs). The overarching takeaway is that success in this environment required disciplined MDMP, flexible sustainment packaging, protected staff development, and a willingness to adapt systems and processes in real time to preserve tempo and survivability in LSCO. This move will erase over half of Melbourne's dedicated high-rise public housing for people over the age of 55 years, sparking concern and condemnation by grassroots groups and the community sector about the impact that relocation and estate redevelopment will have on elderly public tenants. While the 13 older persons' towers are included in the overall high-rise redevelopment program, tenants and advocates were led to believe that these buildings would not be up for demolition until significantly later in the program. Prof Bains holds diplomas in therapeutic counseling (1998–2000) and clinical hypnotherapy , and is a certified Reiki Master (certified 2000) . She is also a full member of the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis (since 2000) .Education and Professional TrainingProf Bains's qualifications combine vocational therapy and counselling credentials. Early in her career she highlighted employment barriers for minority job-seekers, and in 1986 helped establish the Hounslow Ethnic Language and Literacy Office (HELLO) – a local service providing language and literacy training to support employment for immigrants  . That same year she served as Vice-Chair of both the SAHIL Single Parent Group and the Asian Women's Centre, reflecting her commitment to vulnerable women and families  .Beyond her civil service work, Prof Bains has held numerous community and charity positions. She was a Governor of an infant school in Hanworth and a committee member of several local causes (Dyslexia support, youth services, and ethnic counseling projects) . She also sat on the Patient and Public Involvement Forum of the West London Mental Health Trust (2007–08) and was involved in women's radio initiatives (2008) . In the Lions Clubs International service organization, Prof Bains rose to become District Governor of District 105A . (She is noted as the first Zone Chair in that district to earn a membership-growth medaland the zone chairperson medal and later received the organization's highest honor, the Melvin Jones Fellowship .) He was also assigned to the US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) J39 Information Operations (IO) Division as the Chief of Special Activities. He also served at the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) J39 Information Operations (IO) Division after earning a Master Degree in Public Administration from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. He previously served as the G7 Information Operations Officer for the Second Infantry Division, stationed at Camp Red Cloud, Republic of Korea. He was also assigned to Fort Hood's III Armored Corps as a G35 Future Operations IO Planner and deployed to Afghanistan in 2013 where he lead an international team of IO planners for the Future Operations G35 of the ISAF Joint Command (IJC). Before joining III Armored Corps, COL Thelen served with the U.S. Army Forces Command's Operations Division Watch team where he was instrumental in establishing the IO section within the G-3/5/7. Colonel Thelen has had a long and diverse military career, bringing a plethora of military experience to the Department of State. While still a junior in high school, he enlisted in the Illinois Army National Guard as a photo journalist. Four years later, he attended Officer Candidate School and commissioned as a Second Lieutenant after graduating from Illinois State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Relations. He then relocated to Washington, D.C., where he pursued a career with the federal government while continuing to serve in the Virginia Army National Guard's 29th Infantry Division as the Commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, as well as an aide-de-camp to the Commanding General. COL Thelen was transferred to Atlanta, Georgia where he joined the Georgia Army National Guard and the 124th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment. In 1997 he was mobilized, deployed and attached to the 1st Infantry Division 2-2 Infantry in Bosnia-Herzegovina, serving as the Task Force 2-2 Public Affairs Officer. He remained on active duty through the Active Guard and Reserve (AGR) program where he served in Stuttgart, Germany with the European Command J37 NATO Exercise Branch and performed Operations Center duties during the Kosovo Campaign. Following this assignment, he returned to Atlanta and served in the G-3/5/7 Training Division at the U.S. Army Forces Command and the Executive Officer to the 2-star senior Army National Guard Advisor. He was then selected to serve as the Battalion S3, Assistant Professor of Military Science (APMS) at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) ROTC program, and then as the Coordinator for the Georgia National Guard's State Partnership Program with the Former Soviet Republic of Georgia. During this time he also commanded the 124th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment. After command, he attended Command and General Staff College (CGSC) at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and was then assigned as the Brigade S3 Plans officer at the 48th Infantry Brigade. COL Thelen was then assessed to active duty as an Information Operations officer and continues to serve. COL Thelen is married to Alexis (Layton-Moore) and has three children, Jake, Rachel and Robert, Jr. He has owned and operated a real estate investment firm and is an active member of the Harvard Kennedy School Alumni Association. In Episode 285, I sit down with father–son jiu-jitsu black belts Jeff and Aaron Tiegs. It's wild how small the world is—Aaron and I first connected through jiu-jitsu, and I've had him up to train my athletes a couple of times because he's an exceptional grappler and instructor. Last week, when he came up to teach, he brought his father Jeff with him. Jeff and I quickly realized we were Rangers together back in 2000 at Alpha Company, 2/75. I was a private and he was the company Executive Officer. Obviously, with that rank gap, we didn't forge a friendship back then, but he was an exceptional Ranger who was respected by everyone. Connecting again all these years later was a real pleasure. The three of us sat down and talked about life, the military, jiu-jitsu, and more. The Government has released a new energy plan. The 'Wood Energy Strategy and Action Plan' aims to fire up the bioenergy sector. The strategy claims would energy could replace 40% of fossil-fuelled process heat by 2050, displacing 300,000 tonnes of coal at Huntly. Our guest is uniquely qualified to provide insights about life in this world.Commander William Spears is a submarine warfare officer in the U.S. Navy. A native of Pineville, Louisiana, William enlisted in the U.S. Navy's nuclear propulsion program after high school. Upon completing technical training, he was admitted to the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 2008 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and commissioning as an officer. Today, he also holds defense-related master's degrees from the Naval Postgraduate School, the Air Command and Staff College, and the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy.William has served in nuclear-powered submarines across a variety of classes and mission profiles, including duty as the Weapons Officer of a fast-attack submarine and the Executive Officer of a Trident missile submarine. Ashore, he has served as a tactical evaluator on an inspection team responsible to assess the combat readiness of U.S. submarines, and he currently works in the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD CAPE) in the Pentagon. He will return to sea duty in the summer of 2026.He has his own passion for exercise, which is not always a clean fit with the culture of the submarine community, as you'll hear in this episode.He also writes on leadership, ethics, and military topics. His book Stoicism as a Warrior Philosophy releases in the US in November.

Gutiérrez, President & Lead Executive Officer of The Leadership Academy, a nationally recognized nonprofit dedicated to developing transformational leadership for educators at all levels. Nancy also serves on the boards of The Hunt Institute, brightbeam, and The Neurodiversity Alliance, and is the Board Chair of Education Leaders of Color (EdLoC). Nancy is the co-author of Stay and Prevail: Students of Color Don't Need to Leave Their Communities to Succeed (2023), which shares powerful stories of leaders who choose to give back to their home communities. She shares her own journey serving East San Jose, the very place where she grew up—and where her mother once attended the school Nancy would later lead. When asked to step into the principal role at that school, Nancy said to herself: “If I don't step into this, who will?” Nancy shares how building trust required: Listening deeply—not just to hopes and dreams, but to generational trauma. She asked, “How have schools harmed you?” Reflecting back what she heard, to show the community she was listening. Taking visible action—like redesigning the student referral system. Instead of referring students only for misbehavior, teachers began referring students who exhibited excellence. Families started receiving calls from the principal to celebrate their children—flipping the script on what school leadership could look and feel like. Nancy now leads work that supports school leaders across 40+ states. Her story is a beautiful example of what it means to stay, to serve, and to prevail—not just locally, but nationally. Sean Hagerty is a retired Special Operations Soldier with over 25 years of experience. He spent his younger years training and conducting combat operations with the 1st of the 75th Ranger Regiment. After nine years, in 2005, he was selected for and assigned to a Special Operations unit at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. There he spent sixteen years and finished his military career, retiring as a Sergeant Major. He received several awards and decorations throughout his career including three Bronze Stars. Sean currently works for the Department of Defense Science Board as the Senior Advisor. “The Defense Science Board (DSB) is charged with solving tough, technical, national security problems for the Secretary of Defense, the Deputy Secretary of Defense, the Under Secretaries of Defense, the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and other senior Department officials.” His wife Misty is an Executive Officer at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. Their children Courtney, Travis, Samantha, and Delaney all live in the Washington D.C. area and are thriving, growing and traveling along their own paths. The grandchildren Rowen, Jameson, and Wren keep Sean and Misty busy. Sean Hagerty has combined over 25+ years of service in the Special Operations community and deep-rooted research instincts from years of academic pursuits in history to tell this story. This story was written mostly in the plush seats of the daily Tackett's Mill/Pentagon commuter bus and the shaky bucket seats of the Franconia Springfield/Largo blue metro line. However, a few chapters were written while traveling for work, taking advantage of uninterrupted thoughts on an airliner. One chapter was even written during an evening break while on a business trip aboard the USS Nimitz CVN 68 aircraft carrier out in the Pacific Ocean. Cabal all came together during evening edits in his home shared with Misty, in Lakeridge, Virginia. Jones Point was the first novel in the Dane Cooper series. Cabal is the second. The Department of Defense, Defense Office of Prepublication and Security Review has cleared the publication of both novels. Review was required due to Sean's past and current security clearance. Jones Point was published by Blue Handle Publishing on April 15th, 2024. Cabal will be released June 6th, 2025..
