While not centered solely on homeopathy, our conversation dives deep into the extensive research Nyema uncovered about autism risk factors—and the practical, empowering steps parents can take to reduce them. From the role of nutrition and environmental toxins to the overuse of common medications, Nyema sheds light on simple yet impactful choices that can support healthier outcomes for future children. With compassion and clarity, she shares why informed decision-making is key, especially for those planning to conceive. This episode is not about blame or fear, but about offering hope, awareness, and supportive tools for families at all stages of the parenting journey. Episode Highlights: 07:16 - Inspiration Behind the Book 10:53 - How modern lifestyle choices can impact autism risk 15:10 - Empowering Parents with Information 20:36 - Most surprising findings from Nyema's research on autism 24:02 - Antibiotics and Autism Risk 27:54 - Practical Tips for Parents 30:46 - The Importance of Education for Parents 34:55 - Pain Medications and Autism Link 38:36 - Re-Education of Parents 42:34 - The Role of Fevers in Health 49:52 - Best place to get Nyema's book 50:45 - How homeopaths can benefit from the book About my Guests: Nyema Hermiston is a highly experienced healthcare practitioner whose career spans nursing, naturopathy, and homeopathy. She has held prominent leadership roles in the field, including President of the Australian Homeopathic Association (NSW), Executive Officer of the Australian Register of Homeopaths, and currently serves as President of The Aurum Project, a charity dedicated to homeopathic research. With a special interest in acute childhood illnesses, Nyema is passionate about helping young children avoid unnecessary side effects from conventional medications. Send us a textEpisode 139: Lubin Pfeiffer and Asher Dezsery - RecFish SA Executive OfficerThis week we are joined by Cod and freshwater fishing guru, Lubin Pfeiffer, back for his second appearance after first joining us all the way back in episode 21. We chat with Lubin about all the fishing he's been up to including Bream comps in Victoria, NSW Murray Cod and local flathead on the West Coast. With the Algal Bloom limiting the options for saltwater fishing locally, Lubin shares some tips about those wanting to head to the fresh to catch a fish!Asher joins us to discuss all of the news relevant to RecFish SA, and there has been a lot going on in this space:The ongoing algal bloom and how it is affecting fishing locally.Squid bag limits reduced to 12 per person. An increase in the Snapper bag limit in the states South East.Commercial Kingfish netting is restricted to 3 fish per day.Damaged jetties after the recent storms. Cape Jervis master plan.We also chat more about the algal bloom, including sharks washing up both metro and across the state, with Flinders Uni wanting to collect specimens for research. We feature the Shimano Speedmaster 24kg straight butt rod as our tackle item of the week, we got this on the back of our chat with Josh Carpenter in  episode 136 to target barrel tuna (if and when they arrive in better numbers.) The fishing report is pretty quiet with the Algae slowing fishing down, particularly in the Gulf of St Vincent. We couldn't get a bite when targeting Whiting off O'Sullivans beach, while northern metro and Yorke Peninsula have been quiet too. Freshwater might be the best bet at the moment with some Callop and Murray Cod being caught in the Murray, as well as some smaller trout through the hills.

In this episode of 21st Century Water, we sit down with Matt Stouder, Executive Officer of the Metropolitan Wastewater Management Commission (MWMC) in Oregon, to explore how his leadership is driving operational resilience, environmental stewardship, and innovative thinking in wastewater management. We begin by learning how Matt's rural upbringing and early exposure to water chemistry inspired a lifelong commitment to environmental protection and public service. His path from stormwater engineering to leading a regional utility reflects a deep-rooted belief in stewardship, collaboration, and giving back to the community. We then dive into the scale and structure of MWMC, which serves about 275,000 residents across Eugene and Springfield. Despite owning over $500 million in assets and operating a major treatment plant with a peak capacity of 277 MGD, the commission itself has no employees and operates through intergovernmental agreements—Springfield handles the administration and capital projects, and Eugene manages the operations. Matt emphasizes how strategic coordination is key to balancing daily operations with long-term capital investments, especially as the infrastructure ages.We discuss MWMC's shift from expansion to asset renewal, including a strong focus on asset management and funding strategies. Incremental rate increases and a rate stabilization fund have helped buffer financial volatility, allowing the utility to maintain steady investment without burdening ratepayers. Matt also shares MWMC's approach to innovation through projects like the biocycle farm, where biosolids are applied to hybrid poplar trees for local reuse, and a renewable natural gas facility that generates new revenue streams while reducing emissions.Communication and education emerge as central themes. From community partnerships and public outreach at local fairs to an award-winning Clean Water University program for fifth graders, MWMC prioritizes transparency and awareness. Matt's engineering background doesn't limit his commitment to public engagement; instead, it reinforces it.As we shift to environmental goals, Matt outlines how MWMC embraces a circular economy mindset. Instead of costly infrastructure like chillers, the utility addresses thermal pollution by planting trees along the McKenzie River, effectively reducing river temperatures while supporting watershed health. He also highlights how climate change is affecting local precipitation patterns, forcing the utility to adjust infrastructure capacity and operational readiness.Looking ahead, Matt is focused on a $300 million infrastructure renewal plan, transforming biosolids into a higher-value Class A product, and potentially expanding MWMC's services to nearby communities through regionalization. He views himself as a custodian of the system, aiming to leave the utility stronger than he found it and prepared for the next generation.More:Metropolitan Wastewater Management Commission (MWMC): https://www.mwmcpartners.orgOregon Association of Clean Water Agencies (ORACWA): https://oracwa.orgNorthwest Natural Gas (NW Natural): https://www.nwnatural.comWillamette Riverkeeper: https://www.willametteriverkeeper.orgNational Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA): https://www.nacwa.orgPacific Northwest Clean Water Association (PNCWA): https://www.pncwa.org Aquasight Website: https://aquasight.io/

Sean Hagerty is a retired Special Operations Soldier with over 25 years of experience. He spent his younger years training and conducting combat operations with the 1st of the 75th Ranger Regiment. After nine years, in 2005, he was selected for and assigned to a Special Operations unit at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. There he spent sixteen years and finished his military career, retiring as a Sergeant Major. He received several awards and decorations throughout his career including three Bronze Stars. Sean currently works for the Department of Defense Science Board as the Senior Advisor. “The Defense Science Board (DSB) is charged with solving tough, technical, national security problems for the Secretary of Defense, the Deputy Secretary of Defense, the Under Secretaries of Defense, the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and other senior Department officials.” His wife Misty is an Executive Officer at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. Their children Courtney, Travis, Samantha, and Delaney all live in the Washington D.C. area and are thriving, growing and traveling along their own paths. The grandchildren Rowen, Jameson, and Wren keep Sean and Misty busy. Sean Hagerty has combined over 25+ years of service in the Special Operations community and deep-rooted research instincts from years of academic pursuits in history to tell this story. This story was written mostly in the plush seats of the daily Tackett's Mill/Pentagon commuter bus and the shaky bucket seats of the Franconia Springfield/Largo blue metro line. However, a few chapters were written while traveling for work, taking advantage of uninterrupted thoughts on an airliner. One chapter was even written during an evening break while on a business trip aboard the USS Nimitz CVN 68 aircraft carrier out in the Pacific Ocean. Cabal all came together during evening edits in his home shared with Misty, in Lakeridge, Virginia. Jones Point was the first novel in the Dane Cooper series. Cabal is the second. The Department of Defense, Defense Office of Prepublication and Security Review has cleared the publication of both novels. Review was required due to Sean's past and current security clearance. Jones Point was published by Blue Handle Publishing on April 15th, 2024. Cabal will be released June 6th, 2025.. He has a BA from Macalester College and an MBA from McGill University.   ·      “You can't change Japan, so you're the one that's going to need to change.” ·      “If you say something, you've got to follow through with it—that's how you build trust.” ·      “I believe in uplifting the team more than the team executing my directives.” ·      “Patience doesn't mean doing nothing; it means putting in the time to build understanding.” ·      “Feedback means you care—if you stop giving feedback, you've stopped caring about their development.”   Terii approaches leadership in Japan through the lens of authenticity, patience, and servant leadership. His cross-cultural background and career in multiple industries provide him with a nuanced view of leadership dynamics, but it is his ability to adapt to the Japanese context that defines his success. In Japan, he recognises that building rapport and trust takes significantly longer than in other markets like Singapore or Hong Kong. This delay, however, is not a barrier but a gateway—he invests heavily in relationships and sees trust as something earned through consistent action and personal engagement. He stresses the importance of understanding before implementing change. Entering a new industry, Terii refrained from immediate restructuring. Instead, he observed, listened, and built relationships with stakeholders at every level. By not coming in as the outsider intent on overhauling everything, he earned credibility and buy-in. He believes in creating a culture where feedback is delivered constructively and mistakes are viewed as learning opportunities, not grounds for punishment. Trust, for him, is built on follow-through, consistency, and psychological safety. He makes an intentional effort to have his team's back, especially when things go wrong, and avoids public reprimands. Emotional control and a steady demeanour are key to maintaining trust—he's acutely aware that employees are constantly reading their leader's signals. Terii has driven Hilton's cultural transformation in Japan by focusing on both hygiene factors, such as leave policies and compensation, and emotional engagement through peer recognition and celebration of human milestones. Under his leadership, Hilton Japan rose from being unranked to third best place to work in the country and number one in hospitality. He values grassroots input, launching Gemba-level focus groups to surface insights from the frontline. For new leaders in Japan, his advice is clear: be patient, don't expect to change the country—change yourself. Invest time in relationships, identify internal influencers, and adapt communication for clarity and resonance. Above all, leadership for Terii is about dreaming big, inspiring others, and making things happen—with humility, empathy, and persistence.

Have you ever considered the role that discipline, trust, and storytelling play in shaping truly innovative leaders? In this episode of the Innovation Storytellers Show, I'm honored to welcome Miles Garrett, a veteran leader, author, and former Executive Officer of the nuclear-powered submarine USS Cheyenne. Drawing from his extensive 25-year career spanning both the United States Marine Corps and the Navy, Miles shares powerful insights into leadership, innovation, and the critical role storytelling plays in high-stakes environments. Miles takes us behind the scenes to explore why consistent conversations around leadership are not just beneficial but necessary. He shares his own experience in the military, where peer-to-peer conversations shape organizational culture and instill vital traits like intrinsic motivation, professional trust, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. But what happens when these conversations aren't happening? Miles highlights how ignoring leadership fundamentals can quickly undermine organizational morale and effectiveness, whether in the military or in business. Our discussion also covers the fascinating connection between risk-taking, innovation, and storytelling. Miles vividly recounts historical examples, illustrating why leaders must balance boldness with accountability to inspire genuine breakthroughs. He argues convincingly that innovation thrives when leaders foster trust, enabling their teams to share ideas without fear confidently. Throughout the conversation, Miles challenges conventional perceptions of leadership, pushing us to reconsider what truly drives people internally versus externally. He offers practical strategies for cultivating intrinsic motivation, building professional trust, and pursuing excellence in any organization. Join us for this thought-provoking episode and explore how timeless principles from military leadership can fuel innovation in your own organization. Could a stronger focus on trust, motivation, and storytelling unlock new possibilities for your team? Tune in and share your thoughts.
