We all know Hallmark movies are a staple of the holiday season. But new movies air on the Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries all year long! Do you watch them?   I do, and so does my best friend and best friend of the show, Anna Rendell. But this year, Anna hasn't had a chance to watch any of the new, non-holiday Hallmark movies yet, so this week I'm telling her—and you—which ones to watch next time they air, plus one to avoid and one coming soon to look forward to.   Now listen, Anna and I hadn't talked in person in several weeks, so we did use up a lot of our podcasting time talking off-microphone. I have no excuse and yes, that does mean this episode is full-on rapid-fire. I think you're gonna love it anyway!   And of course, short episode or not, this is still The Couch, where side notes and rabbit trails are always welcome. So we manage to talk work-from-home wardrobes and a reboot that's actually good. Are you ready? Let's get started!   MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Curious Caterer: Grilling Season (next airing May 7, 10am CST) The Cases of Mystery Lane (next airing May 21, 8pm CST) Sweeter than Chocolate (next airing May 6, 10am CST) Made for Each Other (keep an eye out for the next airing) The Wedding Cottage (next airing May 9, 7pm CST) Carrot Cake Murder: A Hannah Swensen Mystery (premiering May 19, 8pm CST)   NOT-SO-GUILTY PLEASURES: No bra during the day at home (#workfromhome perks!) Party Down, season 3 (a reboot, on Starz)   DON'T FORGET: Join The Couch on Facebook! It's so much fun! Find Anna at @annaerendell on Instagram or at annarendell.com. Asif then tells an anecdote about him volunteering at Norman Jewison's barbeque at the Toronto International Film Festival (the female Canadian rock star he saw there). Then the guys talk about how the television show ‘Party Down' came about, its connection with Paul Rudd, its eventual cancellation and its recent return this year. Then, Ali and Asif talk about misophonia (34:23). Asif explains how the condition is literally the hatred of certain sounds ie chewing or slurping and how it is unclear if it is a psychological or mental disorder. He talks about how common it is and how people with misophonia have intense (anger) responses to triggering sounds. He provides valuable insights on thinking outside popular frameworks, shipping products efficiently, and avoiding overreliance on user research. We explore the three types of network effects, how to leverage them, and how to break someone else's network effect. Hello from Tammy's COVID bunker! This week, after a short tribute to Montana's “dean of journalism,” Chuck Johnson, R.I.P., Tammy speaks with Kshama Sawant, the three-term socialist Seattle City Councilmember who recently announced that she will not seek reelection after this year. Instead, she has launched Workers Strike Back, “an independent, rank-and-file campaign” to support organizing nationwide. We discuss [9:42] the Amazonification of Seattle, [31:05] a historic municipal bill banning caste discrimination, and [38:28] critiques of Sawant's approach to politics and organizing. Plus: Tammy and Kshama debate union strategy. In this episode, we ask: Does socialism provide answers to today's woes? What did the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020 reveal about identity politics?  How might the Dobbs ruling and other failures of Democratic leadership help us envision a new political party? What does DSA get right and wrong? For more, read: * Tammy's 2019 mini-profile of Kshama * Kshama's labor history fave: Teamster Rebellion by Farrell Dobbs   * A Kentucky worker on “How We're Fighting for a Union at Amazon's Biggest Air Hub”* Kshama's recent bill, making Seattle “the first U.S. city to ban caste discrimination"And some extras from the TTSG team: * Tammy and Mai recommend the French-German-Belgian film, “Return to Seoul,” currently playing in some U.S. theaters.* Tammy semi-recommends the return of the LA-catering comedy “Party Down” (though the first two seasons remain vastly superior) and really recommends these sly, tingly novellas, translated from the Japanese, by Yoko Ogawa. * A happy follow-up to the housing episode with Ritti Singh and Navneet Grewal, reported by TTSG guest Wilfred Chan: “‘It's legal, there's just no precedent': the first US town to demand a rent decrease”* More news in racial impostors, via Andy: “Raquel Evita Saraswati pretended to be a woman of color. Her deception traumatized the communities she claimed to help.”* Some devastating TikToks by college applicants, courtesy of Jay Thanks for listening! Party Down is a show with a simple premise. It's about a group of actors, writers and creative types who work at a catering company called Party Down. Most of the catering employees have big dreams, but to pay the bills they're sort of stuck at the company. To make matters worse, the employees often get involved into some truly absurd and wacky situations. The first two seasons of the show ran more than 10 years ago, but the show is back for a third season. On the latest episode of Bullseye, we're joined by of the co-creators of Party Down, Rob Thomas and John Enbom. They join us to talk about the latest season of the show, and what it was like to revisit the characters after all these years. This week, Alan, Quinta, and Scott were joined by favorite guest Lawfare executive editor Natalie Orpett to talk through the week's news, including:“Low Confidence Games.” A Department of Energy intelligence report concluded with “low confidence” that COVID-19 may have begun with a lab leak in Wuhan, China, further fracturing views within the U.S. government and giving added fuel to those seeking to put blame for the pandemic on China. What should we make of the report—and the strong reactions to it?“It's Coming from Inside the Cabinet.” The West Bank and Israel appear to be in the midst of another spiral of violence. Most recently, the shooting of two Israeli settlers by a Palestinian led to a riot through a number of Palestinian towns that killed one resident and damaged hundreds of homes and cars. What explains this surge in violence? And is the new Israeli government headed by Bibi Netanyahu to blame? “Tallanasty.” At the prompting of Gov. Ron DeSantis—likely a leading candidate for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination—Florida's state legislature is enacting a wave of culture war measures, targeting everything from school libraries to Disney. What does this all mean for democratic governance in Florida? And what could it mean for the country come 2024? For object lessons, Alan endorsed all things Alison Brie, including her newest film, Spin Me Round. Quinta celebrated her favorite carb- and dairy-based holiday, National Khachapuri Day. Scott hearkened back to object lessons of yesteryear to mark the release of two new comedies that have literally been decades in the making: Party Down and A History of the World, Part 2. And Natalie embraced her inner corporate shill to endorse Lawfare's own podcast series, The Aftermath, which is releasing the final episode of its first season soon. Hosted on Acast.
