Last October, Amazon CEO and billionaire owner of the Washington Post Jeff Bezos swooped in to halt the publication of a Kamala Harris endorsement from the editorial board. Yesterday, he appeared in the front row at Trump's second inauguration. The paper's hemorrhaging subscribers—and laying off dozens of staff members—but it seems like the internal unrest has just begun. Guest: Maxwell Tani, journalist covering media for Semafor. The Left hates Jeff Bezos now, and he's doubling down on The Washington Post not officially endorsing a presidential candidate. The Washington Post's decision not to endorse a presidential candidate led to resignations of three editorial board members and thousands of subscription cancellations, including from celebrity Mark Hamill. Bezos' choice may have been influenced by Harris' proposed tax on billionaires, as he is a billionaire who pays little tax and has a personal interest in avoiding increased taxation. The Post's decision was criticized as potentially being motivated by a desire to avoid alienating right-leaning advertisers, as the newspaper is reportedly "bleeding cash" and relies heavily on ad revenue. Bezos defended the non-endorsement by claiming that endorsements do not influence election outcomes and create a perception of bias and non-independence. The decision was made internally without consulting either campaign and was implemented with "inadequate planning" and "not enough time before the election". Bezos admitted he was "not paying attention" to the Post's operations until it began losing money, suggesting a lack of oversight in the newspaper's management. Jeff Bezos defends The Washington Post's decision to refrain from endorsing candidates, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing news reporting and maintaining editorial independence amid criticism and financial challenges. 00:00 Jeff Bezos defends The Washington Post's choice to refrain from endorsing candidates amid backlash, highlighting a trend of newspapers prioritizing news reporting over endorsements. 01:43 Jeff Bezos defends the Washington Post's non-endorsement of Kamala Harris, asserting that it won't impact elections as most voters have already made their choices. 04:20 The Washington Post's refusal to endorse Kamala Harris has triggered resignations, subscription losses, and raised concerns about bias amid financial instability. 06:33 Bezos refrains from endorsing Harris over her billionaire tax plans, facing criticism for perceived cowardice and political motives. 08:12 Bezos clarifies that the Washington Post's non-endorsement of Harris stems from poor planning, not strategy, amid a changing political landscape. 09:57 Bezos defends the Washington Post's independence from his business interests, stressing the need for active management to combat declining journalism standards. 12:42 Bezos defends The Washington Post's non-endorsement of a presidential candidate, facing criticism for prioritizing financial interests over editorial integrity amid voters' economic motivations. 15:08 Join clownfishminus.com for exclusive content, discounts, and community engagement.

Happy Friday! We have officially made it to the end of summer 20204. Can you believe it?! While temperatures may be cooling down, tech and workplace changes continue heating up. So, let's get to it. Layoff Influencers - I hadn't heard of the term layoff influencer until this past week, and no, it's not people helping influence companies toward layoffs. Read any headlines, and you'll know they don't need help being pushed in that direction. We're talking about the rising trend of people sharing their layoff experience. Is this helpful or harmful? Depends on who you ask. Private Jet Commute - While there's no shortage of outrage over the new Starbucks CEO and his 1000-mile private jet commute, I can't help but dig beneath the surface concern. Commercial or charter, why are companies still so convinced an executive's physical presence is so necessary? Last I checked, executives don't emit gamma radiation that turns people into superhumans. Rising AI Concerns - AI is showing up in company annual reports, but not for the right reasons. A recent study showed an almost 500% increase in public mentions by top companies that believe AI is a significant threat. While I'm happy companies are starting to recognize risks, the clear miss is how many still don't understand the benefits. AI isn't the risk; your strategy and execution are! Procreate Anti-AI - "I {explicative} hate generative AI!!" Those are strong words coming from the CEO of a creative tech company. However, a deeper investigation shows the only generative AI this CEO seems to consistently hate is the kind that does tasks he personally believes people should do. Is this a valid argument against AI or a personal bias gone wild? Bye, Bye Dev Jobs? - "You've got a max of two years before all your jobs are gone, software developers," according to Amazon CEO. Well, not really. More like, "Developers, your jobs are going to change significantly over the next two years, so you'll need to adapt," according to Head of AWS, a division of Amazon. Funny how headlines tell one story while the details tell another. Show Notes: In this Weekly Update, host Christopher Lind provides valuable insights on various topics at the intersection of business, technology, and human experience. He begins by teasing upcoming news for next week's episode. The first segment dives into a Bloomberg article discussing the rise of 'layoff influencers' and the changing culture around job loss. Lind shares his personal experiences and reflections, emphasizing the complexities and biases tied to being open about layoffs. The discussion moves to the controversy surrounding the Starbucks CEO's use of a private jet for commuting and the broader implications for leadership and employee relations. Finally, Lind explores the polarizing views on AI's impact on jobs, citing studies and statements from industry leaders. He cautions against extreme positions and encourages balanced, thoughtful approaches to integrating AI in the workplace. 00:00 - Introduction and Weekly Rundown 01:53 - The Rise of Layoff Influencers 16:17 - The Starbucks CEO Controversy 25:20 - AI: A Growing Threat or Opportunity? 30:49 - Procreate CEO is Anti-AI 38:18 - The Future of Developer Jobs 44:55 - Conclusion: Embracing Change and Staying Ahead #AI #TechTrends #FutureofWork #Equity #Layoffs

Ryan is joined in this episode by Shruthi Rao. Shruthi is the co-founder of Vendia, a serverless blockchain platform that collects and delivers data. Shruthi has an impressive history including working with the current Amazon CEO, creating crypto's first mining operation and advising Ethereum. Shruthi talks to Ryan about her journey and reveals her 5-step framework for creating a successful start-up. KEY TAKEAWAYS Vendia has seen the positive impact of having big-ticket clients such as airlines and BMW, it means that the mid-market clients are seeing this and wanting to work with them too. A content-led approach is something Vendia are working on within their go-to-market strategy, particularly around ‘thought-leadership' curated content. After hearing about Bitcoin Shruthi decided mining it herself would suit her better, she then ended up setting up in a village in India and was so successful she broke the grid! Work backwards from a customer. Figure out what they want/their problem is, whether it is widespread and if so, how you can solve it. Vendia realised that their solution needed to work with customers wherever and whomever they already were with. It needed to be flexible across platforms and clouds. Storytelling is something Shruthi believes is essential to building any new business, giving the how and the why.
