Join Balaji Raghavan, Head of Engineering at Postman, as he discusses the critical gap between AI adoption and API readiness, revealing that while 80% of developers use AI, only 24% design APIs with AI agents as the intended consumer. Drawing from Postman's 40 million developer user base, Raghavan explains how human-designed APIs create ambiguity problems for AI systems, requiring additional tooling layers that often introduce security vulnerabilities through proxy credentials and unauthorized access risks. He addresses the uncomfortable reality that the industry is still in early stages of making AI reliably call APIs at scale, with hallucinations and context limitations preventing effective orchestration across hundreds of endpoints, while warning that judicious leaders must distinguish between deterministic flows and cases where expensive AI-based approaches are truly necessary to manage infrastructure costs and prevent cascade failures.

Rory Sutherland reveals a simple truth about branding: your attitude toward a company isn't shaped by its logo or marketing - it's shaped by people. In this clip, Rory shares a Royal Mail insight that changed how he sees branding. After extensive research, they found that people's opinions of Royal Mail depended almost entirely on one thing… Whether they liked their postman. That discovery exposes a deeper truth about marketing and behavioral science: trust is personal, not corporate. Brands live and die through human interaction: not data, algorithms, or slogans. Rory explains why marketers must focus less on communication efficiency and more on emotional connection. The “postman effect” proves that great branding starts with real people doing ordinary things well - every single day. Have you ever loved a brand because of one great experience? Let us know in the comments. Subscribe for more Rory Sutherland insights on behavioral science, branding, and creativity.

The Postman's Lantern #Nightlight #RTTBROS The Postman's LanternIsaiah 52:7 - "How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace, that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation, that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!"Back in the 1800s, before we had email and cell phones and all the ways we stay connected today, mail carriers were the lifeline between isolated mountain communities and the rest of the world. These brave men would load up their horses with leather saddlebags full of letters, newspapers, and packages, then set out on treacherous journeys through narrow mountain passes that could take days to complete. When winter storms hit and the paths became dangerous, when snow covered the familiar landmarks and darkness fell early, those postmen would light their lanterns and press on. They knew that in those remote cabins scattered across the mountainsides, families were waiting. A mother hadn't heard from her son who'd gone to find work in the city. A young wife was expecting news about whether her husband had survived the war. Children were hoping for a letter from grandparents they hadn't seen in years. That flickering lantern light meant everything to those isolated folks. When they saw it bobbing along the mountain trail in the distance, hope stirred in their hearts. Someone was coming with news from the outside world. Connection was on its way. They weren't forgotten after all.You know, friend, we live in a world that's more connected than ever before, but people are still isolated in ways that matter most. They're waiting for someone to bring them good news, real news, news that can change everything. That's where you and I come in. We're like those postmen with their lanterns, carrying the greatest news ever delivered. We carry the good tidings that God loves them, that Jesus died for them, that they don't have to walk through life's dark valleys alone. The beautiful thing about Isaiah's words is that God calls our feet beautiful. Not because we're perfect, but because we're willing to go with His message of hope.Your lantern might be a kind word to a discouraged coworker or simply living with such peace that people wonder what makes you different. You might not think it's much, but to someone sitting in darkness, your little light looks like the most beautiful thing they've ever seen.So keep that light burning bright. People are watching for your lantern in the distance, and the message we carry isn't just news, it's the Good News. And that's worth every difficult step up the mountain.Prayer: Lord, help me remember that You've entrusted me with the greatest message ever delivered. Give me courage to carry Your light into the dark places where people are waiting for hope. Make my feet beautiful as I go with Your good tidings. Amen.Be sure to Like, Share, Follow and subscribe, it helps get the word out. https://linktr.ee/rttbros

Strap on your goggles and hoist the sails, this week on Born to Watch, the crew dives into a post-apocalyptic puddle with their Waterworld (1995) Review, Kevin Costner's legendary aquatic epic that soaked Universal Studios in ambition, cash, and controversy. Whitey, G Man, and Damo reunite to wade through the waves of cinematic history, revisiting a film as infamous for its behind-the-scenes chaos as it is for its soggy storytelling. From the jump, the team questions Waterworld's place in pop culture infamy. Once touted as the most expensive movie ever made, this maritime Mad Max-on-water starred Costner at the peak of his fame, but was it his creative apex or the beginning of his soggy descent? The guys don't pull punches, balancing deep dives into production lore with their trademark irreverent humour.Whitey sets the tone by confronting the bloated ambition of the project: “Has any Hollywood star become so famous with a catalogue with so many peaks and troughs?” Cue a wide-ranging Costner retrospective, comparing the golden days of Field of Dreams and The Untouchables to the indulgent excesses of The Postman and yes, Waterworld. The verdict? Costner might've been drinking his own Kool-Aid, filtered through a urine distillation machine, of course.G Man leads the crew through the absurd plot, where the Earth is drowned, the polar caps are melted, and dry land is a mythic memory. Costner plays the Mariner, a grim, gilled loner with webbed feet and a personality drier than the lost continent he's searching for. The podcast doesn't shy away from the film's narrative flaws: characters with no backstory, Mad Max rip-offs, and a complete lack of chemistry between the leads, most notably between Costner and Jeannie Triplehorn, affectionately known as “Jeannie Triple Blurter” by the team.Speaking of performances, Dennis Hopper's turn as the Deacon is eviscerated with delight. Compared to his electric villain in Speed just a year prior, Hopper here is an oily cartoon, piloting a rust-bucket Exxon Valdez filled with chain-smoking goons. “It's a bad Beyond Thunderdome,” declares Whitey, and the panel doesn't disagree. The gang revels in the film's infamous production disasters: hurricanes, a constantly rewritten script, Costner's massive creative control, and his falling out with director Kevin Reynolds. G Man reminds us of the legendary quote about Costner directing himself: “Now he gets to work with his favourite actor and his favourite director.” Ouch.Despite the floundering script, there are moments that the Born to Watch crew appreciates. The practical effects, like the massive floating Atoll set and Costner's tricked-out trimaran, get nods of approval, even if the action sequences are undercut by choppy editing and goofy stunts. And the team can't help but laugh at the iconic “pee filtration scene,” the rope-assisted bungee jump climax, and the infamous underwater city reveal, which defies all logic and basic physics. One of the episode's standout sections is “Question Time,” where the trio tackles the film's most baffling plot points: How does the Mariner's boat outrun jet skis? How does dry land remain uninhabited? And why, oh why, would someone spend their life searching for paradise only to leave it five minutes after finding it?The boys also pay tribute to the lesser-known cast and crew: a young Jack Black in a blink-and-miss-it role, Tina Majorino (aka the Enola of Napoleon Dynamite fame), and the brilliant yet misfiring score from James Newton Howard. “He dialled it in harder than Dennis Hopper did,” quips Damo.By the end, the Born to Watch gang reaches a consensus: Waterworld is a cinematic curiosity, too ambitious to dismiss outright, too flawed to celebrate, and just insane enough to warrant a watch. Maybe once.So whether you're a fan of ‘90s action epics or just here to marvel at cinematic misfires, this Waterworld deep dive is a splash of nostalgic chaos you won't want to miss.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts!Join the conversation:Is Waterworld an underrated cult classic or a floating disaster?Would you survive in a world covered by the ocean? And seriously, how does that boat outrun jet skis?#BornToWatch #Waterworld #KevinCostner #MoviePodcast #90sMovies #PostApocalyptic #DennisHopper #JeanneTripplehorn #CultClassic #MadMaxOnWater #MovieReview #PodcastLife

Develpreneur: Become a Better Developer and Entrepreneur

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 22, 2025 21:52

In this episode of the Building Better Developers with AI podcast, Rob Broadhead and Michael Meloche revisit a popular past topic: the power of documentation. Instead of repeating the same points, they used ChatGPT to surface fresh talking points and spark a new conversation. This wasn't about using AI to generate documentation, but using it to revisit, reflect, and dive deeper into the value of documenting your development work. The result is a renewed appreciation for one of the most overlooked parts of software development—and how to make it better. The Power of Documentation: Why We Resist, But Still Need It “Good documentation might not get noticed—but bad or missing documentation definitely will.” Most developers avoid documentation. It's viewed as: Time-consuming Low ROI Secondary to writing “clean code” But as Rob and Michael explain, the power of documentation becomes obvious when someone new joins the team, when you return to your own code months later, or when something breaks in production. Without documentation, your project becomes fragile—even dangerous. Using AI tools like ChatGPT or Copilot can help kick-start outlines, clarify intentions, and even summarize logic to make documenting easier. The Power of Documentation in Planning: Comment-Driven Development “Don't just write code—write your thinking process.” One of the key strategies Rob shares is comment-driven development. Start by outlining your logic and workflow using plain-language comments or pseudocode. This mirrors how many AI tools generate code: from your intent to executable logic. Michael supports this with a reminder that self-documenting code—through clear naming, logical structure, and readable syntax—is also a form of documentation. Helpful tools: JSDoc Doxygen Sphinx Notion AI The Power of Documentation as a Force Multiplier “Documentation doesn't just explain—it accelerates.” Rob and Michael stress that the power of documentation isn't just about code comments—it's about velocity, quality, and reliability. Good documentation: Speeds up onboarding Reduces bugs and confusion Enables DevOps and automated testing Clarifies communication across teams Tools like Swagger and Postman transform API docs into live interfaces—letting you test endpoints, view examples, and generate clients with ease. The Power of Documentation: What It Costs to Skip It “If you don't write it down, it walks out the door with your last developer.” Michael shares stories of undocumented systems that became impossible to maintain when key developers left. Even worse is documentation that exists—but is never updated. Best practices: Keep docs near the code (e.g., Markdown in repo) Automate updates with tools like MkDocs Treat documentation like testing: part of your done definition Pro tip: Add documentation as a checklist item in your development tickets. Don't consider a task complete until it's explained clearly. The Power of Documentation in Practice: Where to Start “Every project deserves a README, a runbook, and a little foresight.” Rob and Michael outline the foundational documentation every project should have: README.md — Overview, build/setup steps, key dependencies Code comments — Especially around complex or non-obvious logic API documentation — Inputs, outputs, examples Architecture diagrams — System design and flow Runbooks — Deployment, recovery, and incident response Testing strategy — How to verify features and stability These documents preserve the power of documentation and ensure long-term maintainability, even as teams and tools evolve. Developer Challenge: Take One Step This Week Your challenge from the episode: Pick one area of your project—just one—and improve its documentation this week. Update the README. Create a runbook. Add clear inline comments to a tricky method. If you're not sure where to start, use AI to outline your intent or help create a checklist. Tag your results with #DevDocChallenge and share how you're strengthening the power of documentation in your work. Final Thoughts: Let AI Inspire, But Let Documentation Lead In this episode, Rob and Michael didn't use AI to do the documentation. They used it to start a better conversation about why it matters. The power of documentation is timeless—but now we have better tools and habits to make it sustainable. If you want to build code that lasts, supports teams, and scales with confidence—make documentation part of your strategy from day one. Callout: Build smarter. Build clearer. Embrace the power of documentation—your future self and your team will thank you. It's the end of everything! Welcome back to Part 2 of our season finale featuring Dr. Charles Liu, co-host Allen Liu, and our guest archaeology expert and author, Hannah Liu, MEd. (If you haven't caught up to Part 1, we highly recommend you do before embarking on the next leg of this journey! Listen here or wherever you get your podcasts!) We pick right up where we left off, with the next question from our audience. Daniela asks, “If a black hole hits the Sun, will Earth be destroyed?” Chuck explains a few ways a black hole can mess with our day, including the fact that long before any actual collision took place, the Sun would start shedding material that would destroy us. He compares that unlikely event to the actual example of cosmic destruction we're watching in NGC 4676 – aka “The Mice” – which are two galaxies swirling together in a death spiral playing out over hundreds of millions of years. Naturally, this leads Chuck to ponder what happens when civilizations fall apart here on Earth, and Hannah brings up the collapse of the Roman Empire. As she explains, “the fall of Rome happened a lot of times, and also, no time.” From 44 BCE and the assassination of Julius Caesar, to the 476 invasion and conquest of Rome by the Germanic tribes denoted by Edward Gibbon in The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, to the fact ever since nations have claimed to be the descendants or inheritors of Rome. Chuck points out the influence of Gibbon's book on Isaac Asimov's “Foundation” series, followed by a very quick romp through “Decline and Fall of America” literature including The Handmaid's Tale, A Canticle for Liebowitz, Man in the High Castle, and the zombie apocalypse tour de force, World War Z. Then it's time for another question from the audience: Michael says, “I heard that scientists brought back a dire wolf. Could they bring back dinosaurs or animals that could destroy us all?” It turns out, these resurrected animals are just gray wolves that have been engineered to have some characteristics of the extinct predator. It's still a pretty impressive feat, though, and you'll hear how they collected bits and pieces of dire wolf DNA to “resurrect them.” Allen also brings up similar modification experiments they're doing on chickens to make them more dinosaur-like. Allen points out that bioengineered germs are far more likely to cause our destruction than resurrected dinosaurs, regardless of the world envisioned in the Jurassic Park franchise. And speaking of Michael Crichton, Chuck gives us a breakdown of his sci-fi classic, The Andromeda Strain, about bacteria from space that cause a biological outbreak here on Earth. Hannah points out that historically, some of the biggest killers of human beings have been plagues. She gives us a guided tour of the bubonic plagues, from the Black Death, which may have wiped out as much as 60% of the population of Europe, to the Plague of Justinian a thousand years earlier that killed as many as 100 million people, while also name dropping the Antonine Plague and the Spanish Flu!) And that's it Season 4 of The LIUniverse. Stay tuned for Season 5 after the summer. In 1985, Neil Postman published Amusing Ourselves to Death. That means this year is the 40th birthday of this landmark book. And in that 40 years, Postman's troubling prophesies have mostly come true. Screens have reshaped our minds, our relationships, and our culture. Ivan Mesa and Brett McCracken say that “social media and smartphones have brought an appetite for distraction, an epidemic of loneliness, and increased rates of mental health challenges. Their new book, Scrolling Ourselves to Death, is a collection of essays by them and many others who have studied not only Neil Postman's book, but also the culture – examining both through a Christian worldview lens. Both Postman's original book, and this new book celebrating Postman, have much to offer Christians today, and I'm delighted to have both Brett and Ivan on the podcast. Brett McCracken is a senior editor for The Gospel Coalition and the author of many excellent books, including one of my recent favorites, The Wisdom Pyramid: Feeding Your Soul in a Post-Truth World. Ivan Mesa ha a PhD from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and is the editorial director for The Gospel Coalition. He is the author of Before You Lose Your Faith: Deconstructing Doubt in the Church. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. I'm your host Warren Smith. Until next time, may God bless you.
