[TRIGGER WARNING ]In the wake of Sania Khan's tragic murder, Lahari Rao, host of Down to Brown focuses on domestic violence and abuse, and its silent prominence within the South Asian community. In the first 40 minutes, she talks to psychologist Gayle Paul, MFT, to understand the psyche of domestic abuse situations and how the victim experiences it. They cover ways to safely support a friend or loved one going through this. https://gaylepaul.comNext, she speaks with Kavita Mehra, executive director of Sakhi, to dive into why domestic abuse and violence IS truly a South Asian problem, and why our community needs to participate in broader conversations around gun violence in the US.Sakhi is committed to serving survivors through a combination of efforts including—but not limited to—direct services, advocacy and organizing, technical assistance, and community outreach. More information about our annual NICE project here: https://cearts.org/home/nice/ Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, for the first time ever, we're sharing our behind-the-scenes discussions for our 2020 NICE project. More info about out annual NICE project: https://cearts.org/home/nice/. Content Note: Written works, especially classics and books set in historical time periods, almost always contain problematic content: intolerance, prejudice, discrimination, and racism. This year's books are: Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell, Dracula by Bram Stoker, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, and Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. All of them possess elements of prejudice, intolerance, and racism, as well as classism, and violence and domestic abuse. In our pre-workshop podcast discussions, we've recorded several episodes that discuss racism and prejudice in general, and how to address problematic elements in classics and period books. Some of the questions we asked ourselves are: what's really there? How do we view the book today vs when it was written/the setting? What is the value of reading books with problematic elements? The Jodi Arias Trails brings the issue of Domestic Abuse & Violence front and center. In our Justice System everyone is supposed to have the right to a fair trial, so from that perspective the Jodi Arias case is just business as usual. However Marshall, the Host of the MarshallTalk said, "I believe the Jodi Arias case is damaging our Justice System even further than it already is. Some of the experts for the Defense are absolutely non-credible and willing to smear the person that is truly the victim and can not speak for himself. Regardless if any of the statements this lying defendant has made, she had no right to take his life." Again, Marshall also believes this is unfair to most Americans that make minor mistakes and get caught up in the Criminal Justice System with very little or no sympathy. What do you think? Join in on the conversation, whether you agree or disagree with Marshall.
