Linda Ugelow is the author of “Delight in the Limelight: Overcome Your Fear of Being Seen and Realize Your Dreams.” In this episode, Linda shares how fear often stems from past experiences, and how leaders can reframe internal narratives to demonstrate more confidence. She dives into the power of self-acceptance and how it shapes leadership presence, especially in high-stakes situations. Linda shares how leaders can embrace strategic vulnerability—being open without oversharing—to build trust and credibility. If you've ever doubted your voice, this conversation will challenge your assumptions and offer a path forward to speak with clarity and confidence. You can find episode 462 wherever you get your podcasts! Key Takeaways [01:29] Linda shared that before becoming a confidence coach, she was an organic farmer growing specialty vegetables for local restaurants. But ten years ago, she realized she was in the wrong business. She knew she wanted to make an impact, and rather than judge that desire as grandiose, she owned it and began her personal transformation journey. [03:10] Linda explains fear always has a reason. It stems from life experiences, cultural influences, and how we were raised. People might have been bullied, overlooked, or told to stay silent growing up—leading to ingrained beliefs like “It's not safe to be seen.” Fear, she says, isn't the enemy; it's a messenger from the past. [06:16] Jim prompted the distinction between self-awareness and self-acceptance. Linda encouraged us to love the sound of our own voices—not to dominate but to take up space with intention. She frames presence as a balance between owning the moment and celebrating others' moments in the spotlight. [08:23] Leadership moments aren't always obvious. Linda encourages leaders to view these moments as service, not performance. If your voice might help move things forward, step in. The environment matters too—leaders must foster psychological safety if they expect others to contribute meaningfully. [13:01] Though she has a background in expressive arts therapy, Linda identifies as a coach. She helps people resolve deep-seated fears using tools like EFT (tapping), creative visualization, and inner forgiveness. Her process isn't traditional therapy—it's based on what worked to dissolve her own fear of being seen. [20:28] Linda explained that vulnerability looks different depending on the context—on stage vs. team meetings vs. watercooler chats. Her own experiences showed that being human—forgetting a point during a talk or making a mistake—can deepen connection and make you more relatable and trustworthy. [24:05] Jan asked how Linda helps leaders shift from fixed to growth mindset. Linda shared she overcame her fear at age 60. Her advice: start small, build confidence with tiny wins, and remove what's blocking you. Once the fear is cleared, skill-building becomes easier. “This is your life,” she says. “Live it fully.” [26:59] Linda wrapped with a powerful reminder: be your own best supporter. Silence your inner critic and give yourself permission to speak. Slow down, enunciate, and let your voice reflect the value of your message. People want to hear you—believe that, and speak like you do. [29:08] And remember...“We don't always have an accurate view of our own potential. I think most people who are frightened of public speaking and can't imagine they might feel different as a result of training. Don't assume you know how much potential you have. Sometimes the only way to know what you can do is to test yourself.” - Scott Adams Quotable Quotes “Fear is not the villain. Fear is a messenger.” “We need to not feel the pressure that we have to be a 10-year experienced speaker when we are just starting out.” “Self-expression and speaking is your human design.” “It's never too late. I overcame my fear of speaking when I was 60 years old.” “The world opens up to you when you remove all the blocks.” “Be your biggest advocate. Your staunchest supporter.” “If we're going to bother to say it, let our words be heard.” “Perfect does not make us human.” This is the book mentioned in this book Resources Mentioned The Leadership Podcast | Sponsored by | Rafti Advisors. „Glückselig sind …“ – so beginnt einer der bekanntesten Abschnitte der Bibel. Die Seligpreisungen aus der Bergpredigt sind keine leichten Worte. Sie sind radikal. Unerwartet. Und gerade deshalb so kraftvoll. Jesus spricht nicht die Erfolgreichen, Starken und Lauten selig – sondern die, die hungern nach Gerechtigkeit. Die, die Frieden stiften. Die, die trauern. Was bedeutet das heute, mitten im 21. Jahrhundert? Was heißt es, glücklich zu sein – nicht irgendwann, sondern jetzt? In dieser Predigtserie wollen wir gemeinsam entdecken, was hinter diesen alten Worten steckt. Wir glauben: Die Seligpreisungen sind kein religiöser Trostpreis. Sie sind eine Einladung zu einem Leben, das anders ist – und tiefer.

Welcome to the Leading Edge in Emotionally Focused Therapy, hosted by Drs. James Hawkins, Ph.D., LPC, and Ryan Rana, Ph.D., LMFT, LPC—Renowned ICEEFT Therapists, Supervisors, and Trainers. We're thrilled to have you with us. We believe this podcast, a valuable resource, will empower you to push the boundaries in your work, helping individuals and couples connect more deeply with themselves and each other. Overview and Themes: This podcast episode is the finale of the "Resistant Client Series," focusing on how therapists can transform client resistance into opportunities for deeper emotional connection and healing. Main Themes: 1. Understanding Resistance as Protective Behavior - Resistance isn't a problem to eliminate, but a weight-bearing mechanism protecting relationship dynamics - Every resistant stance has an attachment significance - Clients aren't being difficult; they're managing deep emotional fears 2. Theory of Change in EFT - Replace resistance with corrective emotional experiences - Help clients make clear emotional signals - Enable partners to provide compassionate comfort - Support clients in truly receiving and embodying that comfort 3. Clinical Wisdom - Don't lose hope with challenging clients - Trust the attachment map - Be intentional about vulnerability in therapeutic interventions - Focus on helping clients understand their own emotional experiences Closing Summary: In the intricate dance of human connection, resistance is not an obstacle, but a doorway. Each defensive stance whispers a profound story of fear, longing, and the desperate hope to be truly seen and loved. As therapists, our sacred work is not to dismantle these protective walls, but to gently illuminate the tender heart beating behind them. We are architects of hope, helping couples rediscover the language of vulnerability, transforming cycles of pain into rhythms of connection. Every moment of resistance carries within it the seed of healing - waiting to be understood, honored, and transformed. Keep pushing the leading edge. THIS IS A REPLAY OF 2024 - WEEK 23 All the links: LINKTR.EE/BARBARAFAISONThis is a podcast about knowing yourself and having sustainable practices.Developing and sustaining a daily meditation practice for over 25 years helped me gain a deeper level of self-awareness. I have learned that the more I practice the more I gain a level of self-mastery with what I am practicing. Being self-aware and having personal insight allows me to recognize when I need to focus on a specific tool or technique, MORE.I remember when I was at dinner with a few former colleagues in 2017 and an active shooter entered the restaurant. We were ending dinner when we heard the words, “Everybody down.” I was with three much younger ladies reminding them to breathe and affirming that we would be okay. Was I concerned as we were underneath the table waiting for more news? Of course. I also had a strong sense that we would all be fine.As the scene dispersed and the police arrived we found out that the person who instructed us to get down was a retired police officer. Time passed and the shooter was apprehended and we all left to return safely to our homes. One of the definitions of trauma is a “deeply disturbing or distressing experience.” Yep, I would say it was a traumatic experience. When I arrived home I checked in with TD and I immediately went to my living room and lay flat on my back on the floor. I found a sound vibration recording on YouTube that focused on healing, safety and feeling grounded. I listened to the recording and felt my body begin to release some of that energy and relax. The next day as I told my brother about what happened he reminded me to rest. After our conversation I felt my body physically releasing some of the stress and I had a very long nap. I also felt achy later that day. I knew I needed help processing what happened so I called the Employee Assistance Program and I was able to schedule counseling. I also called the ladies to suggest they reach out for support via their Employee Assistance Program as well. This quote from Bessel A. van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma, reminds me to be truthful with myself.“The greatest sources of our suffering are the lies we tell ourselves.”My nervous system was impacted by that experience. I learned a lot in the therapy sessions about processing trauma and how the book title states, “the body keeps score.” We feel trauma in our bodies and it helps to have ways to release what the body is holding on to. I have different practices I use to keep grounded, stay centered and to release energy that is stuck in my body. Practice is the opportunity to fine tune our skills so when we are called to use them, we can use them effectively. Here are a few practices I do regularly to reduce stress on my nervous system.Emotional freedom technique (EFT) also known as tapping- specifically for trauma or an experience. I found Regulate Your Nervous System After Trauma by Julie Schiffman. Here is a link.Schedule a counseling session,Sound vibration meditations to shift the energy in my body - Jhene Aiko's Trigger Protection Mantra is a staple for me to have playing in the background. It's very soothing and she has several available for different lengths.Life has unexpected detours ALL the time. In addition to breathing practices, meditation, laughter, and approaching experiences with curiosity helps me practice less judgment of myself and others. What are some of the ways you navigate life's unpredictable journey? So. Let's review. You're a high-achieving, self-aware woman. You've clocked your patterns and traced them back to their cause. You've been in therapy. You've read the books. You've listened to the podcasts. You've done breathwork, meditation, EFT tapping, all the things… And you haven't made any real fucking progress. Why? Why have you done all the things, but aren't getting “better?” Because mindset work isn't enough. Because awareness without embodiment is just you doing mental cartwheels AROUND your trauma, not actually integrating it. Let's talk about how to fix that. Key Highlights: Counterintuitive approach: When clients become reactive, therapists should move towards the emotion, not away from it Reactivity is a signal of underlying fear and pain that needs acknowledgment The goal is to help clients organize and understand their emotional experience Main Points: Understanding Reactivity Reactivity indicates a need for emotional organization Therapists must first ground themselves to stay present Look for cues like voice changes, slower pace, and "yes" signaling Therapeutic Approach Move towards the reactivity with curiosity and empathy Co-create meaning with the client Help clients understand the attachment function of their emotional response Trust and Corrective Experience Develop trust that vulnerable emotions exist beneath resistance Be willing to take vulnerable steps before seeing the full result Learn through practice and experiencing successful interventions Practical Strategies: Validate the function of protective behaviors Slow down the process Become an "attachment interpreter" Closing Insight: EFT aims to help clients find flexibility in their reactive moments and connect with each other, not eliminate reactivity. As a mom navigating the complex journey of motherhood, I'm passionate about breaking the silence around mental health. In this episode of the Momplex Podcast, I share my personal struggles with burnout, postpartum depression, and the importance of self-care. I discuss how our mental health isn't just about us, but about the example we set for our children. Drawing from my own experiences, I highlight the critical signs of maternal burnout and the need to listen to our body's signals. I encourage moms to check in with themselves, seek support, and understand that asking for help isn't a weakness—it's strength. With one in five teens facing mental health challenges, I believe we must model emotional resilience and self-compassion. By sharing our stories openly, we can normalize mental health conversations and create a supportive environment for ourselves and our children. How does astrology help us inhabit and experience our aliveness more deeply? How might embodiment practices help us awaken to our intuitive nature? In this enlightening conversation, astrologer Sabrina Monarch and I discussed the integration of astrological practice and embodiment work.On the surface, it's easy to misunderstand astrology as a strictly intellectual, imaginal, and abstract practice. This was certainly my perception at the start of my journey. Years into learning and practicing alongside Sabrina, I've found the opposite to be true.Earlier this year, I received a life-changing EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) session with Sabrina. I invited her to the podcast for a deeper dive into her profound experiences with EFT and how it has helped her reconnect with her emotional and artistic self. We delved into the nuances of aliveness, distinguishing it from mere regulation, and explore how astrology can be more than just a spiritual guide but a path to deeper embodiment. We also discussed the influence of Pluto on personal transformation, the challenges of managing primal energies like rage, and working with resistance and trauma as diviners. I delve into the transformative practice of Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), commonly known as tapping. Initially skeptical, I discovered tapping as a gentle yet powerful tool to manage anxiety and stress, especially amidst the chaos of motherhood. Tapping combines elements of acupuncture and emotional acknowledgment, allowing us to soothe our nervous systems through simple, self-administered techniques. During the episode, I guide listeners through a step-by-step tapping sequence, encouraging them to voice their feelings and embrace their emotions without judgment. This practice isn't about eliminating anxiety but about recognizing and nurturing ourselves through it. Whether you're overwhelmed or just seeking a moment of calm, tapping offers a path back to self-connection. Join me as we breathe, tap, and journey together towards emotional freedom. In today's episode, George and Laurie welcome fellow EFTer and relationship expert Dr. Ryan Rana. Ryan is the director of the Joshua Center in Arkansas, EFT trainer and co-host of "The Leading Edge" podcast. Ryan joins us today for a great conversation on how beliefs about ourselves become cemented and the damage this can cause to relationships. You may have caught yourself saying before, "I'm just no good with money." and then when your pockets are empty and the bills are due, you've just consolidated this belief. Now evidence piles on evidence and this becomes a fixed idea. These beliefs are comforting on some level because they create predictability but they are relationship killers! Fixed ideas leave no room for curiosity and as you'll hear in this episode "once we become curious, we can start changing again." This great conversation will get you thinking about these limiting beliefs, where they came from and how to change them to stop the damage and start getting more hopeful and engaged.
