"Proven" While many accomplished individuals have accredited their success to that of pulling up their own bootstraps, that is not the case for Chimeaka White. Looking from the outside, it may appear that her ascension to becoming a prominent attorney came about from her following the traditional path that most lawyers do. Yet, that is far from Chimeaka's reality. Her story expresses her faith in God, love and support from her family and friends, and an unwavering determination to win. More than anything, Chimeaka's story is that of someone who is “Proven”. Chimeaka has proven not only to others but even to herself that regardless of what circumstances she may face, regardless of what life throws at her, nothing will stop her from reaching her goals. Attorney Chimeaka White of Greensboro, NC, is the mother of two amazing adults, Harmony and Sincere. Chimeaka is a graduate of James B. Dudley High School. She also graduated from North Carolina A&T State University with a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry. She also received a Law Degree from North Carolina Central University. Today, she owns The White Law Firm, PLLC, located in High Point, NC, the first black female-owned and operated personal injury law firm in the Triad area. Her motto is “Justice4Pain”. Chimeaka comes from a long list of strong women. She says that her success can be attributed to several key factors, including her upbringing, which instilled strong values in her, and the mentorship I received throughout her career. “I am inspired by my maternal great-grandmother, Evelyn Watson, who taught me the power of love and patience. She lived slowly and simply. My maternal grandmother, Margaret Hardy (Momo) taught me the importance of cultivating a spiritual practice. She has a strong relationship with God and taught me how to pray deep, strong prayers. My paternal grandmother, Lois White (Mama White), taught me not to have anything that I don't plan on using. When you bring one thing into your house, remove three things from your house.” It should come as no surprise that Chimeaka is an attorney. As a child, she wanted to become a prosecutor. While attending NC A&T, she thought about pursuing a career as a dentist. Prior to law school, she worked as a paralegal at a personal injury law firm. She worked alongside experienced paralegal Teresa Burney, who taught her how to manage car accident cases from the intake process to closing the file. This is where she gained her passion for the law. Chimeaka says she made the decision to become an attorney because she genuinely loves to help people. “After being bullied in middle school, I learned how to stand up for myself and others. I know how it feels to be voiceless, to endure pain due to being afraid of standing up for yourself. This is why I became an attorney to fight for the rights of others. I do not allow people to be taken advantage of. I am a voice for the people,” she says." Attorney Chimeaka L. Graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology from the University of Nebraska in 2002, Chuma began his “jump” into BASE with a solid skydiving career beginning at the age of 16 in Caldwell, Idaho. In 2007, after completing over 700 skydives, Chuma made the move to Twin Falls, ID where he now runs a very successful BASE Jumping School – Inter-Demented BASE. Chuma's impressive athletic background in gymnastics, skiing, and pole-vaulting has provided him with the necessary skill set and physical fitness to successfully perform complicated aerial maneuvers in BASE Jumping. He has become well known for his originality and style within this arena and is responsible for several world recognized BASE Jumping tricks, as well as pioneering many unpacked jumps and refining the “game over”. Chuma is responsible for making the “tweener,” named by Chuma, famous amongst jumpers by successfully performing this trick off multiple BASE exits. Chuma's background in gymnastics gives him a unique kinesthetic awareness that sets him apart from other BASE jumpers, when it comes to tricks, solid exits and landings. In 2009, Chuma and his former business partners developed the world's first commercial Tandem Base Jumping operation. During the experimental phase, Chuma personally performed many test jumps with experienced BASE jumpers acting as passengers. Since 2009, he has completed over 500 tandem BASE jumps without incident, and currently holds the record for the most tandem BASE jumps completed. Recently, he has completed a tandem jump off all four objects in the word BASE. It is believed that he is the first and only person in the world to have done this. His company, Tandem BASE LLC, has performed tandem BASE jumps at bridge day in Fayetteville, West Virginia for the past 4 years. Chuma was the first person in the world to complete a tandem BASE jump from the Menara KL Tower, and the Wisma Sanyan in Malaysia, 2013. In 2014, Chuma became the first person to perform a tandem BASE jump in Zakynthos, Greece at Shipwreck beach, and later that year in Arco, Italy at Monte' Brento. Later in 2014, Chuma finished in the top 16 at the Red Bull Aces Wingsuit race, an event where the world's best wingsuit athletes completed in a slalom course held in place by helicopters. In 2015, Chuma performed the first quadriplegic tandem BASE jump with passenger Pete Bonser. The following year, Chuma took the first person with cerebral palsy, Marlena Katene, on a jump from the KL tower in Malaysia. One of his favorite achievements includes taking 102 year old Dorothy Cluster on a tandem BASE jump from the Perrine Bridge in June 2013. Being able to travel the world, meeting like-minded people, and BASE jumping in incredible places is Chuma's biggest joy. Currently, Chuma is moving towards a career in television and film, and has made several television appearances in the past 4 years including: the Travel Channel's Ride-iculous, Trip Flip, and MSNBC's Caught on Camera. He is currently working with producers and colleagues on a documentary that highlights the type of lifestyle he enjoys – being a professional “fun maker”. Despite this very impressive professional history, Sean remains grounded and humble regarding his achievements and always stresses the importance of planning, experience and guidance in all areas of BASE jumping.

Science can sometimes feel like an exclusive club that only certain people are allowed into. In this week's episode, produced in partnership with the Allen Institute, both of our storytellers try to find their place in science. Part 1: After getting accepted to a PhD program, Max Departee can't help but feel like he's not good enough to be there. Part 2: Han Arbach is worried coming out as non-binary will ruin their scientific career. Max Departee is a research scientist from the Pacific Northwest who has always had a fascination with the natural world. A curious nature and outdoor spirt led him to attend Montana State University where, between fly-fishing on local rivers and skiing the Rockies, he earned his Bachelors Degree in Biotechnology. Max's career and training as a scientist have taken him many places, from a PhD program in North Carolina, to a small Biotech Start-up in Washington, and back to his home town of Seattle where he now works at the Allen Institute for Brain Science. Han Arbach grew up dreaming of becoming an astronaut after watching the space shuttle land at the military base their family was stationed at. As they continued to grow up and became a “frequent flyer” in the orthopedics department for various injuries, their aspirations shifted towards medical training. Encouraged by fantastic AP Biology and Chemistry teachers in high school they pursued a biochemistry major at Mount Holyoke College. Here they were encouraged by a chemistry professor to try out research. This fostered a newfound love for discovery and research, and with it a new dream career path of becoming a scientist. Han completed their Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the University of Washington studying tail regeneration and nuclear structure in tadpoles. They then did Postdoctoral work at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center using viruses as a tool to probe facets of cell biology. Now, they are a Program Officer at the Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group. Outside of work, you will find them raising two dogs with their partner, attempting to befriend crows, and being a poor but enthusiastic gardener. Learn more about your ad choices. How do you choose an educational path when you are interested in several subjects, and then one you choose first ends up not being the right path for you? You keep your options open, take classes in as many areas as you can within your degree, talk to a lot of people, ask a lot of questions, and try things out until you find your way. That's what Claire did, and it led her to some incredible opportunities that helped her build a meaningful career in a field she loves. Why does this keep happening? Rabbi Yom Tov Glaser, known for his comedic and unique style of speaking, jumps onto Bad Jew to explore the deeper ideas behind this portion of our history. Chaz Volk, host of Bad Jew, gets a crash course to the Jewish diaspora, the tragedy that have struck our generations, and explores what we can do to change the outcome of the future (Moshiach!) DIPG: Eternal Hope versus Terminal Corruption Guests: Dean Fachon, author with wife Wendy Fachon Neil Fachon was a 19-year-old engineering-student at Northeastern University when he was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), an inoperable brain stem cancer. His family was with him at Mass General Hospital when the neuro-oncologist said he had three months to live. “Six, if you start radiation.” With no time to lose, the family searched out every conceivable treatment, as quickly as possible. Neil chose to enroll in a clinical trial at the Burzynski Clinic in Houston. Though dogged by controversy throughout his career, Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski has achieved miraculous results treating many patients with “incurable” cancers, including some with DIPG. The medical system designed to protect patients like Neil instead proved as intractable as the disease in his brain. DIPG: Eternal Hope versus Terminal Corruption is the first book of a trilogy, covering the time from misdiagnoses to diagnosis, and from choosing and commencing treatment to being denied treatment. Through a long series of moves and counter moves, Neil was caught in the middle of a life and death chess game, against an opponent that was less than above board. This book is dedicated to everyone who feels abandoned by the very institutions we believed were established to safe guard our rights. Dean Fachon is publishing his son's story to commemorate Brain Tumor Awareness Month (May) and DIPG Awareness Day, which is May 17. Dean Fachon has a Bachelors Degree in English Literature from Colgate University and a Masters Degree in Technical Communication from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He wrote technical publications for IBM and DEC, and is the author of Grand Illusion a treatise on fiat money. Dean's wife, Wendy,, is a writer for Natural Awakenings magazine, a contributing author of Shining a Light on Grief, Volume 2, author of The Difference Maker, and host of the Story Walking Radio Hour here on D7RN. DIPG: Eternal Hope versus Terminal Corruption DIPG, by author Dean Fachon is the 1st book of a trilogy, covering the time from misdiagnoses to diagnosis, and from choosing and commencing treatment to being denied treatment. David Gurzenski Luke grew up in upstate New York in the city of Albion . David was a soft-spoken introvert and had tragedy hit him at 11 years old when his father died of a heart attack. He eventually moved to Arizona, where he attended Arizona State University, and got his Bachelors Degree in Journalism in 1969. He also became the editor of the school newspaper at ASU in his first year of school. He got married to a beautiful woman named Pam and ended up having two beautiful girls, Jennifer and Julia. David felt the pressure of being married with all the things couples go through in the first few years of marriage. From a young age, he knew he was attracted to men, but had a tremendous amount of shame and guilt. He met a very outgoing classmate who had confidence, and they ended up having an affair but the shame and guilt was so strong he went into depression. David eventually came out to Pam when she asked him if he was having an affair with a woman, and he said “no it was an affair with a man”. His wife, Pam, whose father is a doctor suggested he get a lobotomy to change his orientation, which David found shocking . The doctor did refer him to a psychiatrist to help him become straight. Obviously it didn't work. David also went onto the University of Arizona, where he received his Masters in Journalism in 1972. He became the editor of the University of Arizona's newsletter, and also was the Associate Director of the Alumni Association. He went on to have a successful career in journalism holding several positions. Unfortunately, he was fired from two positions due to being a gay man. He took both employers to court for discrimination and was successful in winning both cases. This shows a tremendous amount of courage on David's part. David met his life partner and husband Alan who is a Substance Abuse Counselor, and they've been together 19 years. His husband, Alan formed a group called “ Life Challenges Support Group” which he supports free of charge for anyone who is facing challenges in their life and needs courage to get through them.

TORRO's most productive area of research involves members conducting tornado damage site investigations. She lives in Hampshire with her husband. Sarah Horton, it's an honor to have you on the show! Tonight's Second Guest WeatherBrain is a Senior Weather Risk Manager at DTN. He has worked in the organisation (formally MeteoGroup in Europe) for over 23 years, as both a shift forecaster and a line manager. Paul is currently Head of TORRO – the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation. He has been storm chasing in the USA 19 times and has witnessed many severe storms and tornadoes. He lives in Reading with his partner Helen (also a meteorologist), and their young daughter, Alana. Paul is a Chartered Meteorologist, as awarded by the Royal Meteorological Society. Paul Knightley, thanks so much for dropping by tonight. Also joining us as Guest Panelist is show regular SOO Kevin Laws from the NWS Birmingham. Choosing a major in college often begins with a subject we enjoy, and for Dr. Bledsoe, it was no different when her love of reading and writing led her to major in English Literature, which eventually led to a Masters Degree in Advanced Literary to help others learn to love and value reading. Many of us find our calling through our work experiences, as Ripsime did in her first few positions out of school. We never know where we are going to discover the thing that becomes our career focus, so it's important to be open to opportunities and continue to learn every step of the way, as Ripsime clearly does throughout her story. Because Dr. Bledsoe has years of experience teaching First Year seminar courses, we discuss many topics pertaining to first year college students, including many pieces of advice for both students and parents. Don't miss this valuable guidance!

After years of planning a conversation together for the podcast, artist and friend Raven Halfmoon and I sat down for a chat on a sunny summer afternoon above the clay education workspace at the Archie Bray Foundation for Ceramic Arts in Helena, Montana. We talked about the beginning of Raven's path as an artist and how, although she works across mediums, her practice has most recently been centered in clay- and she has been going big! We speak to her conceptual approach of building large scale ceramics as a means to take up space for Indigenous women and how her recent works echo her community and cultural inspirations. We speak about navigating within the various art worlds including the ceramic and clay community, the Native art world and the larger contemporary art market. Raven shares how working with clay has taught her patience, understanding and an acknowledgement that failure, as much as success, is part of the clay journey. As we round out the conversation, Raven reflects on how as artists, we can't just stay cooped up in our studios, we also have to go out, live our lives and be with our communities in order to be able to do our creative work in a sustainable way. Raven reminds us to find balance and practice great care with one of the most valuable resources we possess, time. Raven Halfmoon (Caddo Nation) is from Norman, Oklahoma. She attended the University of Arkansas where she earned a double Bachelors Degree in ceramics/painting and cultural anthropology. Her work has been featured in multiple exhibitions throughout the U.S. as well as internationally. Raven lives and works in Norman, OK. She is represented by Kouri+Corrao Gallery in Santa Fe, NM and Ross+Kramer Gallery in New York, NY.
Welcome to the Dressage Today podcast sponsored by Equithrive. Stephanie and Avival talk about how horses keep us grounded no matter what else is happening. Then Aviva answers an “Ask the L” question about a tense, forward-thinking horse. “Is it better to ride the correct tempo which causes tension or ride slightly below the tempo but keep the relaxation and harmony?”Stephanie talks to Emily Donaldson, a successful Grand Prix level trainer. Donaldson grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and started riding horses when she was 5 years old. She garnered a well-rounded equestrian education through fox hunting, hunter/jumpers and horse trials. And when Emily was 13 years-old she decided to focus on Dressage. She received her USDF Bronze Medal and trained her off-the-track Thoroughbred gelding "Thanks A Bunch" from First Level to Prix St. Georges. After earning a Bachelors Degree in Art History from the University of Pittsburgh in 2005, Emily spent the summer as a working student for Courtney King Dye and then in 2006 with Jennifer Baumert. In 2007 Emily returned to her hometown of Pittsburgh to pursue a career in fundraising and marketing. Emily spent eight years working for several influential non-profit organizations while continuing to compete and train. In 2014, Emily married equine veterinarian, Mark Donaldson, and relocated to eastern Pennsylvania. It was at that time that Emily also decided to officially launch Emily Donaldson Dressage LLC. Like many students, Amanda started her college path doing something she loved: playing her clarinet. After some time in college, she realized that even though she loved music, she didn't necessarily want that to be her career path. Once she transferred schools, she took advantage of an opportunity to speak to multiple professionals in a field she was interested in to help guide her decisions to a new major. Technology and the cybersecurity landscape have changed significantly in the years since Amanda was in college, so she has been very proactive in learning and collecting valuable professional experiences along her path. Through it all, Amanda has invested time in a valuable professional organization that positively contributes not only to her community, but to her own professional experience. Don't miss this valuable conversation about Amanda's journey as a fourth generation Mexican American from Texas to working in cybersecurity for a dream technology company on the west coast.
