This upcoming tech and minimal house talent has been turning heads with an exceptional arsenal of unreleased material since surfacing and has racked up numerous gigs as a result. Lock in for the next hour and hear what ERNƎSTAS is all about. Ernestas has made a significant dent in Dublin's house music scene in a relatively short span of time, in just over a year he has supported Alisha, Robbie Doherty, Cam Stockman, Tommy Phillips, and more. He's become a regular outfit for one of Dublin's leading parties, Omni, where he has also recently performed at their Open Air festival alongside Irish house music veteran Eric Brown. Not to mention picking up his UK gig debut in Brighton, where he supported house music fan-favourite Laidlaw. His productions have gained notoriety right across the industry and has recently released on Belters Only We Are Active Records. Undoubtedly, there is much more to come from this bright talent and we are extremely excited to see where he ends up on his musical journey. For the next 60 minutes, dial into this funk-driven recording from ERNƎSTAS. Acid-tinged basslines, sultry vocals, and airtight drums can be heard in abundance throughout, alongside a number of unreleased gems from ERNƎSTAS himself. How will Cork hurlers cope in Darragh Fitzgibbon's absence

The Echo Sport Podcast crew is back to discuss another bumper weekend of Cork GAA action. Now in its fourth season, every week Éamonn Murphy is joined by The Echo team, including Barry O'Mahony, Denis Hurley, Rory Noonan, John Horgan and more to discuss all the latest Cork GAA news on and off the field. While neither of the senior teams were in action over the weekend, it didn't prevent the hurlers from hogging the headlines. The news that Darragh Fitzgibbon will miss the rest of the Munster series due to an operation is just the latest blow after injuries to Rob Downey and Ciarán Joyce and another hamstring issue for the luckless Robbie O'Flynn. Results over the weekend which saw Limerick beat Waterford and Clare put Tipp to the sword probably didn't lift the mood either, as it reinforced what a disaster the All-Ireland final loss last July was while keeping the Banner in the mix for the provincial silverware. If Cork are beaten by four points or more against Clare next Sunday and Limerick get the better of already eliminated Waterford, then it's a Limerick-Clare Munster final. Now some fans would argue it would be benficial to avoid another showdown with the Treaty, Cork have won three games on the bounce and will be keen to preserve their unbeaten record in the Páirc going back to the Clare loss in April 2024.Barry Walsh is the obvious option to start with Darragh Fitz out but could Cork go with Eoin Downey centre-back to restore Tim O'Mahony at midfield and bring Cormac O'Brien in on the wing? How the players fared in last Saturday's A v B game at Fota Island will dictate the management's approach. At club level, Declan Dalton offered a reminder of his class by nailing 0-12 in Fr O'Neill's win over St Finbarr's. Has he a chance of forcing his way back into the match-day 26?On the football front, Cork host Meath in Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday evening, where they'll need to perform better and more consistently across the 70-plus minutes than they did in Killarney. A fully fit Dara Sheedy would add some needed creativity to the half-forward line.Even if they lose, John Cleary's side will have another shot at the qualifiers in the losers round but beating Meath is essential if they're to make a realistic push for the latter stages of the All-Ireland series. The Echo Sport Podcast crew is back to discuss another bumper weekend of Cork GAA action.Starting on the front foot, the hurlers got the job done away to Waterford, in a tough and tight battle down east.It makes it three wins on the bounce for the hurlers and given they were without defensive pillars Rob Downey and Ciarán Joyce, the victory in Walsh Park was hugely satisfying, even if it took all their grit and experience to prevail. The black cards had a huge bearing on the game and there's no doubt the Déise had every right to feel aggrieved. The first against Mark Fitzgerald on Brian Hayes was a marginal call though probably worked out well for them, given Alan Connolly's goal was ruled out for a penalty that he then missed. Plus Waterford scored Cork in the next 10 minutes. The decision against Jack Fagan also looked harsh, given there was a covering defender and the penalty, buried by Mark Coleman, opened up the four-point gap that stood at the final whistle.Cork though, could only worry about themselves and had they failed to win would have been left to rue the wide count of 12 to just three, and none in the second half, for Waterford.Cork have one foot in the Munster final before the last group game with Clare but we outline the scenario where the Rebels finish third on scoring difference, however unlikely that looks.Unfortunately, the Munster football final went the way of so many disappointing days in Fitzgerald Stadium since the last success, way back in 1995.It's now 14 years and counting since Cork collected the provincial title and they simply didn't make enough to the strong wind in the first half in Killarney to upset the odds this time.Goal-scorer Brian O'Driscoll was superb but none of the other Rebels were in the Man of the Match conversation. To have any hope, they needed the core of the team to catch fire.Up front Mark Cronin and Chris Óg Jones combined for 0-6 but there wasn't enough creativity in a front six missing Dara Sheedy and Brian Hurley. At the other end, not alone did David Clifford slam over 1-6, Tony Brosnan popped off the bench to shoot five points. The challenge now is to park it up and reset for Meath on Saturday week. Now in its fourth season, every week Éamonn Murphy is joined by The Echo team, including Barry O'Mahony, Denis Hurley, Rory Noonan, Jack McKay, John Horgan and more to discuss all the latest Cork GAA news on and off the field. His latest single “Equanimity” reflects this direction — a song centred on finding calm and clarity in an increasingly chaotic world. Following the release of “Pawprints” last year, a deeply personal track that resonated with listeners, Seán continues to develop a more concept-driven approach to his writing. Switcher.ie reveals Ireland's most affordable places for first time buyers as deposit saving time soars

The latest research by Switcher.ie has revealed the most affordable places for first-time buyers in Ireland. Our First Time Buyer Affordability Index 2026 shows the least and most attainable areas for joint buyers and sole buyers based on how long it would take to save for a deposit in each region. For housebuyers starting to save this year, our calculations estimate that gathering a deposit could take longer than in previous years. This is due to people saving less and property price rises of typically around 7% throughout 2025, although projections will change year on year due to market and seasonal fluctuations. The average time it takes for a couple to save for a mortgage deposit in Ireland is 7 years 2 months, up from 4 years 7 months last year. Cork, Galway and Meath first-time buyers see deposit saving times almost double. Longford is the most affordable place for first-time buyers, taking 2 years, 3 months to save for a deposit – up from one year, 7 months in 2025. Dún Laoghaire is the least affordable place and could take up to 21 years, 3 months to raise a down payment, which is similar to last year. Roscommon is most affordable for sole buyers. Saving for a deposit takes 3 years, 5 months. Whereas in Dún Laoghaire it could take a staggering 66 years, 5 months. Longford, Leitrim, Donegal, Roscommon, Mayo, Cavan, Clare, Limerick City, Offaly and Monaghan are the 10 most affordable regions. Dún Laoghaire, South Dublin, Galway City, Louth, Wicklow, Fingal, Dublin City, Meath, Kildare, and Cork County are the 10 least affordable places. 65% of Ireland's new builds were completed in the 10 most expensive regions during 2025, while the cheapest 10 areas only attracted 11% of new dwellings. This disadvantages first-time buyers who need to use Help to Buy schemes. Find out how your region ranks and see the full Index at Ireland's most affordable places for first time buyers. * Deposit saving calculations are based on median annual earnings, median property prices and household savings rates from the Central Statistics Office (CSO). For Joint Buyers Top 5 most affordable places for joint buyers Longford was the most affordable place for joint first-time buyers for the third year running. One of the cheapest places to buy a house, it would take just 2.3 years to save the minimum 10% deposit. Leitrim, Donegal, Mayo, and Roscommon joined Longford in the top five most affordable counties for home buyers. To save a deposit in the shortest time, buyers should look to one of these counties or others at the top of our Affordability Index. Couples earning the average salary in Leitrim could save for a mortgage deposit in two years and four months, in Donegal, Roscommon or Mayo, it could take two years and five months. Our research showed that the most affordable places for first-time buyers were not necessarily the areas with the lowest house prices. Although cheaper property prices help, having a comparably higher income makes your mortgage more affordable, and deposits take less time to save. The income-to-house price ratio was around 1 to 3 in these areas. Rank RPPI Region Median first time buyer house price Median annual earnings JOINT BUYERS Years to save 1 Longford €224,000 €38,857 2.3 2 Leitrim €245,000 €41,162 2.4 3 Donegal €225,000 €36,967 2.5 4 Roscommon €260,000 €42,150 2.5 5 Mayo €255,000 €40,657 2.5 Top 5 least affordable places for joint buyers Unsurprisingly, areas in and around Dublin were the most out of reach for first-time buyers, with Dún Laoghaire the least affordable place for both joint and sole buyers. Dún Laoghaire ranks as most out of reach for mortgage seekers, requiring a couple to save for a staggering 21 years and 3 months. South Dublin, Galway City, Louth and Wicklow follow at around 10 years, making them the most challenging regions for joint buyers. The income-to-house-price ratio of over 1:5 makes buying in these desirable areas an impossible dream, even for most dual-income households without a ma...

Irish Entrepreneurship Defies Economic Headwinds as Start-ups Surge 14% in Q1 2026

Irish Tech News Audio Articles

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 8, 2026 4:53

Despite ongoing global economic pressures and geopolitical uncertainty, start-ups grew by 14% in Quarter One of 2026, with a total of 7,263 start-ups registered in the first three months of the year. This sustained growth in start-up activity highlights the continued resilience of Irish entrepreneurs, even in the face of inflationary pressures, elevated interest rates, and global economic uncertainty. Key Sectoral Growth Key sectors driving this growth include construction (+908, +31.98%), community and personal services (+644, +23.14%), financial services (+881, +6.53%), and manufacturing (+183, +46.40%). In volume terms, professional services (legal, accounting and business) saw the highest number of start-ups, totalling 1,327 in Q1 2026, although this represents a 1.3% decrease on Q1 2025. Regional growth remains strong Dublin continues to lead in overall volume of new business registrations, accounting for 2,096 start-ups in Q1 2026, and recording year-on-year growth of approximately 17.69%. Regional hubs demonstrating strong performance include Cork with 736 start-ups (+16.64%), Limerick with 262 (+18.02%), and Galway with 311 (+11.07%). Elsewhere, Kildare recorded 337 start-ups (+38.68%), Meath 280 (+6.87%), and Wicklow 197 (+24.68%). These figures indicate that while Dublin remains the primary hub for business formation, strong growth is also evident across key regional and commuter-belt counties. January was the busiest month for new company start-ups in the quarter, continuing the trend seen in previous years of a strong start to the calendar year. Commercial Judgements The legal and credit landscape also showed signs of shifting dynamics in Q1. Commercial judgments experienced a significant decline, falling 11 % in volume and a substantial 44 % in total value terms, suggesting a decrease in high-value legal debt recoveries. Parallel to this, the influx of new leadership saw a slight cooling; the number of first-time directors fell by approximately 8%, dropping from 8,880 in 2025 to 8,128 in 2026. This suggests that while established sectors continue to expand, the entry of new individual stakeholders into the directorial market has been less buoyant. Commenting on the Q1 figures, Christine Cullen, Managing Director of CRIFVision-Net, said: "The strong growth in new business registrations in the first quarter of 2026 reflects continued confidence in the Irish economy and highlights the resilience and ambition of Irish entrepreneurs. "However, the economic landscape remains complex. While the significant double-digit decrease in the volume and value of commercial judgments suggests a cooling in high-value debt recoveries, the eight per cent dip in first-time directors indicates a slightly more cautious approach from new individuals entering the market. When coupled with the increase in insolvencies, it is clear that many businesses are still navigating significant financial strain. "Despite challenges, the continued strength in start-up activity across sectors and regions suggests that the Irish business community remains dynamic and forward-looking. This balance between opportunity and pressure will be a defining feature of the economic landscape in the months ahead." When Michael and Rose Murray were refused planning permission for a substantial dormer bungalow in 2006 on land they owned in Co Meath, they went ahead with more ambitious plans anyway. They built a detached house that was twice the size of the one denied permission at scenic Faughan Hill. Shortly after they moved in, a complaint to Meath Co Council kick-started an epic legal battle that went all the way to the Supreme Court as the couple sought, to no avail over two decades, to be granted retrospective planning permission for their house. The process culminated this week with the council seizing the property.
