Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com We upgraded a 2016 Ultra-Limited that had the older Harley-Davidson Boom Box Infotainment 6.5 GT to the new Boom Box GTS, which came out on the 2019 and newer Harley touring models. We filmed the install and will release that video on our Y0uTube channel, so get subscribed right away. (see our install video) Converting to the newer Harley Boom Box Infotainment GTS System: As of November 2019, Harley-Davidson made it possible to upgrade your older system to the new 2019 Boom Box GTS on those 2014-2018 touring models. Visiting Harley's website, it seems they are marketing and describing this conversion kit more towards upgrading from the smaller 4.3 non-touchscreen unit to the new GTS unit but you can upgrade from either the smaller 4.3 unit or the larger 6.5 GT unit. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE For 14-18 Harley models, they state that an additional USB connector needs to be purchased for around $35-$50 but you can't even find the part on their own website at the time of this article. Further, we found during our install that it's not even required. This USB connector is the one that plugs into the rear of the Boom Box unit and it is already inside your jukebox compartment where you can plug in your smartphone or USB drive. We just used the USB connector that's already there instead of installing a new one and all works perfectly. And that goes for all the other new cables that come in the box with the new Boom Box GTS such as am/fm antenna a GPS antenna. We didn't use any of the new cables and used the ones already routed and installed and all works perfectly. Also, be aware that if you have XM radio and have installed the module on the rear of your older 6.5 GT unit you don't need a new one. Just remove your XM radio module and install it on the new Harley Boom Box GTS unit and all will work fine. Check out all of our very helpful Boom Box Tutorial Videos for 2014 to present units! We sell a ton of these tutorial videos and are praised by bikers worldwide. Learn everything you need to know to get the most out of the Harley Boom Box system and how to integrate and use Harley Ride Planner! Note: After upgrading to the new Boom Box GTS unit, you'll need to visit a dealership so they can flash the unit with their Digital Technician II software. Until then the unit will beep at you every 15 seconds or so, regardless if it's on or off. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Also fits '15-'18 Road Glide® models with separate purchase of USB Connector P/N 76000374A. Boom Box GTS Unit P/N 76000374A Converting to a Sony XAV-AX7000 instead: Darryl “Squid” Barnes here at Law Abiding Biker Media dug in deep to find out everything you'll want to know if you're considering ditching your Harley Boom Box for the Sony XAV-AX7000 unit. Listen in to this podcast episode as I ask Darryl all the questions you'll want to know. Note: The Sony XAV-AX7000 is designed for use in a car. It was never designed to be used on a motorcycle. The pros of the Sony XAV-AX7000 Harley Boom Box Replacement: The replacement Sony system has standard am/fm and it has both Apple Car Play and Android Auto baked in and they will function if your smartphone is plugged into one of the USB ports. It has a full 7″ touchscreen and is very sleek. You can buy a XAV-AX7000 bundled kit from certain companies that will allow it to install and function when installed on your Harley-Davidson. With Apple Car Play and Android Auto, you'll be able to use Apple Maps and Google Maps for navigation. Another nice feature is that with the Sony XAV-AX7000 you'll maintain your factory handlebar toggle control functions but with several limitations. Note: If you appreciate all the information we provide and to help us continue our mission to help as many bikers as we can worldwide, consider purchasing a Sony XAV-AX7000 through our affiliate link below. No additional cost to you, but we get a small commission if you click through and make a purchase. CHECK OUT A SONY XAV-AX7000 HERE Further, the Sony replacement plays FLAC files on USB drives and includes Bluetooth hands-free calling and audio streaming. You can also jam to your favorite playlists on Pandora or Spotify if you use those instead of your pre-loaded Apple or Android music. The unit is also compatible with a SiriusXM satellite radio tuner. AND, it comes with a 1-year warranty. The Sony unit also has dual USB inputs and has 45 watts RMS per channel and five 5-volt preamp outputs. The cons of the Sony XAV-AX 7000 Harley Boom Box Replacement: The Sony XAV-AX7000 is not a marine-grade like the Boom Box system is. So, you'd need to be careful if riding in heavy rains and when washing your Harley. Additionally, you won't see your EITMS on/off-screen or oil pressure like on the Boom Box. You'll also only get limited functionality with the use of your control toggles. The XAV-AX7000 has a microphone included with a wire that you normally route inside a quiet car. Using this microphone for voice commands or phone calls with the wind and noise would be less than practical on a motorcycle. The XAV-AX7000 only has a handsfree profile "HFP" and not a headset profile "HSP". That means you cannot pair a wireless Bluetooth headset directly with the unit, but you can pair your smartphone with it because of the HFP profile. This is similar to the Boom Box system but you can add the additional wireless headset interface module "WHIM" to get the HSP profile. There is no ad-on for the Sony unit to get the HSP profile. So, you'll need to pair your wireless Bluetooth headset directly with your smartphone and then have your smartphone plugged in via the USB port to use Apple Car Play or Android Auto. You can then give commands to your phone which will then bring things up on the Sony unit. Further, because the unit lacks the HSP profile, you'll lose your Harley intercom functionality and it's not CB radio compatible. Remember, that the Sony XAV7000 unit was made for a car and that's why you need to buy a kit or bundle of things to make this conversion possible. There are companies around that sell the bundle. Obviously, the Sony XAV-AX7000 is a much cheaper option than the Boom Box GTS if you don't care about the above-mentioned items and limitations. Conclusion: Now that you're educated on the Harley Boom Box GTS upgrade vs. the Sony XAV-AX7000 conversion, you have a decision to make on which will work best for you. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com When Harley announced it's new updated Boom Box GTS Infotainment System it was equipping the 2019 & newer models with, they failed to make a kit so that owners of 2014 to 2018 Harley's could upgrade from the older version of the Boom Box system if they chose. This infuriated many Harley owners. A company called Soundz Bagger quickly came out with a harness that made the retro-fit possible but it cost a whopping $450. And then you'd have to spend an additional $2400 to purchase the Boom Box GTS unit. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE It's hard to understand but Harley riders were spending all that money to upgrade when in my opinion the GTS unit is not that much better. Yes, it's an improvement over the original 6.5 Harley Boom Box unit but not worth that much money! Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this podcast, we explain the Harley-Davidson Reflex Defensive Rider System or "RDRS". This RDRS upgrade is a $995 option for the Harley touring line-up except for the Electra Glide Standard. Within this RDRS system are 6 components. Understand, that Harley has had a reflex linked braking system and anti-lock brakes on many touring models since the Rushmore bikes were released in 2014. The Harley linked braking system basically links the brakes so if a rider applies too much rear or front brake in an emergency the system takes over and applies the proper braking amounts to each wheel. See my YouTube video where I explain Harley RDRS! #1-Cornering Enhanced Electronic Linked Braking (C-ELB) This system is just like the reflex linked braking system but activates in an emergency situation in a corner. The front and rear brake systems apply the correct amount of braking for each wheel and take into account the lean angle of the motorcycle or the lateral acceleration of a trike. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE #2-Cornering Enhanced Antilock Braking System (C-ABS) This system takes into account the lean angle of a motorcycle or the lateral acceleration of a trike during a corner and applies the proper amount of anti-lock braking to the front and rear wheel. This keeps the wheels rolling and prevents an uncontrolled wheel lock during a corner. #3-Cornering Enhanced Traction Control System (C-TCS) This is designed to prevent the rear wheel from excessive spinning under acceleration when going straight or cornering. This can be great for wet weather or a sudden change of the riding surface. The rider can choose between two modes: Standard mode is for dry surfaces. Rain mode is for wet surfaces. And the C-TCS mode can be turned off if desired. This mode is tailored when cornering based on lean angle. #4-Drag-Torque Slip Control System (DSCS) and Cornering Enhanced Drag-Torque Slip Control System (C-DSCS) This is designed to reduce excessive rear-wheel slip under deceleration. Rear-wheel slip can happen during a quick downshift or decelerating on wet or slick roads. The system will adjust engine torque delivery to better match rear-wheel speed to road speed. This mode is tailored when cornering based on lean angle or trike lateral acceleration. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! #5-Vehicle Hold Control (VHC) This mode applies and holds brake pressure when activated. This will prevent the motorcycle from rolling after the brake controls have been released. This mode is for a situation such as being stopped on a hill and it will keep the bike from rolling. This system applies brake pressure until the rider turns the throttle and releases the clutch to pull away. The system may also be engaged when the motorcycle is stopped on a flat surface if the rider wants to maintain position without applying pressure to a front or rear brake. The system is activated when the rider momentarily applies extra pressure to either the front-brake hand lever or the rear-brake foot control after the motorcycle has come to a complete stop. An indicator light will illuminate when the system is activated. The VHC system is disengaged automatically as the rider begins to pull away from a stop, or if the rider applies and releases either brake control. #6-Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) This system simply alerts the rider to low tire air pressure. TPMS displays current front and rear tire pressure on the Boom! Box GTS screen or on the odometer on Road King models. This system is also available as a stand-alone accessory for 2020 Touring models equipped with original equipment or accessory wheels that accept a sensor. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com Harley released their latest touring bike, the Electra Glide Standard, and kept it pretty low key. Harley is calling it the "dressed down dresser". It comes in at a cheaper option than the Street Glide, Road Glide or either of those "special" models. In this podcast episode, we break things down for you and what this new Harley is all about and who it may be for, so listen in. The 2019 Harley Electra Glide is basically a stripped down Street Glide and so that's what I am going to compare it to. The Harley Electra Glide starts at $18,999 and the basic Harley Street Glide starts at $21,289. The Street Glide special jumps up to a starting price tag of $27,089. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE The 2019 Harley Electra Glide Standard is an awesome and capable touring bike. I say that because I ride a 2018 Police Electra Glide every day for work. It is a highly capable bike and I think it's great that Harley made a regular public model here in 2019. Understand that the Harley Electra Glide lacks a stereo/infotainment system of any kind and there is just an empty open storage box in that location. It doesn't come standard with ABS brakes but hey can be added for $795. I strongly suggest you add ABS brakes if nothing else as they save lives. It also lacks a two-up passenger seat and passenger pegs but anything can be added based on your needs. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! I'll also mention, the Electra Glide has smaller wheels and the tires are thicker than the Street Glide. The windshield is tall and plain and it has the regular square rear brake/signal setup. You can only get this bike in black. All these things separate its look from the Street Glide a bit. The 2019 Harley Electra Glide comes with the very capable Milwaukee-Eight 107 motor. Yes, it comes standard with cruise control, which is a must for any touring bike. Harley has recently been making moves to appeal to a broader demographic of riders. I believe the 2019 Harley Electra Glide Standard is an attempt to grab riders who may now be able to get into motorcycle touring at a lower price point. The 2019 Electra Glide Standard is a cheaper price and stripped down but a very capable Harley touring model. It will be interesting to see how well this bike sells. Remember, that for close to $2,000 more than the 2019 Harley Electra Glide Standard you can get a Street Glide Standard, which comes standard with ABS brakes, a basic version of the Boom Box radio (4.3 non-touch screen), two up passenger seat, passenger pegs, and paint options. But, everyone's budget is different, so the Electra Glide may be the best option for many. You can always build this bike up how you want it.
