This week's episode is an Excessive Prospect Analysis Podcast first: a chat with someone else, namely Jesse Goldberg-Strassler, the tremendous lead broadcaster of the A's organization's High-A affiliate in Lansing. Jesse was incredibly generous to take a full podcast's worth of time out to talk with me about a wide range of subjects delving into both on- and off-field aspects of minor league baseball. We spend the first 1:10 or so of the conversation focusing on various aspects of broadcasting and the role folks in Jesse's position play in shaping our understanding of what goes on with the teams they work for. We get into Jesse's particular path to his current position and broadcasting acumen, his broadcast philosophy, all the things that go on behind the scenes in a broadcaster's day, the minor league broadcast audience, and plenty more. For the rest of the chat, we discuss various topics around the Lugnuts team: find out how several of the team's new players have looked, what trends Jesse's noticed in being around the team every day, his take on the biggest stories of the 2023 Lansing season, what you might expect from Lugnuts players in batting practice, and learn about some of the cool things some of the squad's players have done off the field as well. Even as closely as I've followed the Lansing team this year (like all A's affiliates), and as familiar as I've become with Jesse's broadcasting style, I learned so much from him about so many different things in this conversation, and I'm sure you'll find plenty of insight from it as well.

Next on IST, the Voice of the South Bend Cubs, Brendan King, stops by and joins Derek to talk about some Minor League baseball. On today's Farm Friday, we're checking in on the Oakland Athletics! Daniel Susac (#3) is one of many well-regarded catchers in this system, and he spent time in Single-A Stockton after the draft with TJ rehabee Gunner Hoglund (#10), who was moved from Toronto in the Matt Chapman deal. High-A Lansing, the Lugnuts, saw MLB's other Max Muncy (#6), this one an infielder from the 2021 MLB draft, spend time with the club. Double-A Midland features some good pitchers who had injuries and bad numbers this season in RHPs JT Ginn (#8) and Ryan Cusick (#13), who are both spending time in the Arizona Fall League to make up some innings. Triple-A Las Vegas has yet another well-regarded catcher in Tyler Soderstrom (#1), but he played more first base this season than catching and a decision needs to be made soon about his defensive home. He took throws from SS Zack Gelof (#4), who hits to all fields but had higher than ideal strikeouts due to chasing breaking stuff and is going to the AFL to work on it. MLB already saw some callups this year, namely C Shea Langeliers (#2) and LHP Ken Waldichuk (#5), as well as former prospect CF Cristian Pache, who may just never hit at the big league level.Find and follow LockedOn MLB Prospects on your favorite podcast platforms:Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/locked-on-mlb-prospects/id1525225214Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2wzJIf26tGgVbB7rsoKyLDStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/show/locked-on-mlb-prospectsFollow along with LockedOn MLB Prospects host Lindsay Crosby as we follow 120+ affiliated teams throughout the 2022 season!
