On Part 2, 1982 Brewers yield to Billy Ball, the early 80s Oakland A's, and how Rickey Henderson redefined the meaning of a hero to Adam. We raise the stakes on our trade proposals, pushing bigger ticket items into the middle. Adam and I then move to 1987, remembering Adam's exile to Barstow, California, and the oasis of being able to listen to KNBR's Hank Greenberg calling Giants games way far away at Candlestick. For the Giants, their big trade in 1987 was their acquisition of Kevin Mitchell and Dave Dravecky. Dravecky's dramatic comeback from shoulder cancer, his subsequent reinjury, and his ultimate amputation give us a lot to talk about and two amputees in one show. Finally, Adam steers us toward the King of Late Night, David Letterman. He goes with a special episode where Dave featured Harmon Killebrew and I went with one featuring Joe Niekro.
There are some friends who know us from all the way back. Friends with whom we can only and forever be ourselves. Joining me on this special three-part episode is my all-time best buddy and original card collecting friend, Adam Klusky. In Part 1, we dive into Adam's card collecting “why?” and “how?” and what he's looking to collect now. Adam also shares about his childhood and how cards and sports were sanctuaries during turbulent times. We then dive into the 1982 Milwaukee Brewers. We talk key trades that put them over the top and Adam and I try to pull off a trade of our own while recording. I raise a toast to Harvey's Wallbangers, Robin Yount's HOF credentials are challenged, and we discuss the whereabouts of Harvey Kuenn's prosthetic leg.
We are taking a side-step from Diamonds and Pearls SDE proper coverage to chat about a collaborator: Martika. Today we chat about several versions of Martika's Kitchen, the unreleased Boom Box, and Don't Say U Love Me. We don't have selections, but Josh makes an exciting connection at the end of the episode! Dave Schwartz's podcast "The Shallow End" often explores the inner journey of the collector. In the final segment of our conversation, he takes us inside what he calls a potentially "scary, riveting, and fun" approach to building his personal collection. Dave is considering selling off or using his current collection to trade into one of the greatest cards in the history of the hobby: The 1948-49 Leaf Jackie Robinson rookie card. He is mulling taking his entire PC and starting over, using the Leaf Jackie as the seed of a new future collection. To this end and as a part of the exercise, we both share personal cards that would be either emotionally difficult to let go of or difficult to replace. We end with what else? We open some packs.
It's a nice little off-season episode tonight as Zach from Bolt Bible joins us to talk all things Chargers (1:20), Hally arrives late to brag about his footy return and discuss the Brady Roast (15:55) and then the boys discuss what they'd do with the schedule if they were in charge (24:45). After that, Curt debuts another new segment, this time named the BOOM BOX (32:48), before Dos' Trivia (44:35) and Joke of the Week hits an all-time low (47:10).podcast@outbackqb.comInsta outbackqb
It's the 1985 World Series. Game 6. Cardinals are three outs away. Slow bouncer to Clark. Worrell clearly beats Orta to the bag. But Denkinger blows the call. And then it all falls apart. Who better to than Iowa Dave Schwartz (@Iowa_Dave_SportsCards on IG) to relive that fateful night?! While the Cardinals fell just short, they more than lived up to the team motto for 1985: The Heat is On. Taken from from Beverley Hills Cop, we springboard into an epic year in movies that also included Rambo: First Blood Part II, Rocky IV, Fletch, Breakfast Club, and two from Michael J. Fox: 1985s #1 movie Back to the Future and Teen Wolf. Plus, we're less than 90 days from the National and we share our collecting plans as we approach Cleveland and our early strategies for the show itself. Finally, get ready for an epic on-air auction win. A major Debra Winger Mail Day awaits.
Continuing with Dave Schwartz (@Iowa_Dave_SportsCards on IG), we do a deep dive into the 1985 Cardinals. Despite not winning the World Series that season, they remain an iconic 80s team remembered for its blazing speed (Vince Coleman, Willie McGee, and their teammates stole 314 bases!), pitching (John Tudor! Joaquin Andujar!), defense (Ozzie!), and how Whitey Herzog built a winner by making the most out of playing on the Busch Stadium artificial turf. We relive the fastest man in baseball, Coleman, getting run over and rolled up by the slowest object on the field, the tarp. Finally, we get wistful about the late-afternoon diffused sunlight at Chavez Ravine and the NLCS late-game, heroic home runs by Ozzie Smith and Jack Clark off of Tom Niedenfuer that propelled the Cardinals to the World Series against the Kansas City Royals.
Christina, Andrés, and BoomBox are excited to take you along as they travel to more new places, meet more new amigos, and write more new songs about the wonderful world of work! https://pbskids.org/jammingonthejob/ The contents of this podcast were developed under a grant from the Department of Education. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com Recently, I launched an in-depth tutorial video focusing on the Harley Infotainment Control Unit "IFCU" Digital Dash system. This cutting-edge technology is now a standard feature on select 2024 models and will continue to be integrated into future touring models. Throughout the creation process of this tutorial, I dedicated extensive time both in the workshop and on the road, immersing myself in every aspect of the IFCU. Despite the absence of accompanying instructions or information, I meticulously explored its functionalities, uncovering both its advantages and limitations. For bikers eager to master the IFCU and harness its full potential, I've crafted a comprehensive tutorial video. You can access it conveniently at LawAbidingBiker.com/IFCU or LawAbidingBiker.com/HarleyDigitalDash. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE The clarity and size of the screen, coupled with features like the high contrast mode for sunny conditions, further enhance usability. In my opinion, it stands as the most responsive auto manufacturer digital dash system I've encountered thus far, though not without its minor flaws, which I'll address shortly. Before delving into those nuances, it's crucial to note the subscription fee required for embedded navigation: $349 for 3 years, inclusive of live weather, traffic, and map updates. While some may balk at this additional cost, it's essential to contextualize it against the previous Boom Box, where map updates incurred fees ranging from $150 to $200 each time, without the added benefits of live weather and traffic. Whether the subscription model proves more favorable remains a matter for debate. And for those considering whether to opt for embedded navigation, be aware that without it, you'll encounter a QR code prompting you to purchase it each time you access navigation on the IFCU. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! The most pressing question on many minds, one that I'm unable to fully address at this juncture, is how the IFCU will fare in the long run—say, 5 or even 10 years down the road. After all, my previous Harley Street Glide Special served me faithfully for a decade before I upgraded to my 2024 model. Concerns naturally arise regarding the long-term support Harley will provide for the Harley infotainment control unit. Will the system gradually slow down and experience lag over time? And if so, how will such issues be addressed by customer support? Additionally, the longevity of support from the third-party company responsible for developing the Skyline OS operating system is another pertinent consideration. On Part 2 of "Season, Team, Boom Box, and Screen: The 1986 New York Giants," Rabbi Seth Limmer and I unpack the history and glory of the Gatorade Bath. We agree on the unparalleled greatness of Lawrence Taylor. I offer a few select vignettes about LT, including the time he showed up to a team meeting in handcuffs. While we both agree that LT and Barry Bonds were two highly-problematic, drug-using superstars, we cannot achieve consensus regarding which one of them wore dangling earrings better. I watched MTV around the clock as a kid, but I'm shocked to learn Seth was not allowed to watch MTV growing up. Nevertheless, and even though we grew up on opposite coasts, our shared love of the Beastie Boys and our encyclopedic knowledge of their lyrics shines brightly as we run through "Licensed to Ill." I challenge Seth to finish a rhyme from each of the 13 tracks. All this and a surprise pack opening at the end!
In this special “Season, Team, Boom Box, and Screen” episode of the Rated Rabbi Sports Card Podcast, we welcome Rabbi Seth Limmer to the studio for a deep dive into his beloved 1986 NY Football Giants. Along the way, we wrestle with a Rashomon-like inquiry into memory, perspective, and truth as we recall the ferocious Giants' defense, TE Mark Bavaro's epic dragging of Ronnie Lott during a Monday night comeback, and the Giants' 49-3 playoff obliteration of the 49ers in the Meadowlands. Of course, no conversation of that win is complete without Jim Burt's devastating hit on Joe Montana and the human white flag of surrender embodied by backup QB Jeff Kemp. We also argue over the best number for a QB, remember when Montana and Walter Payton hosted Saturday Night Live the night before Super Bowl XXI, wax poetically over the perfection of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena as a Super Bowl location, and Seth fawns over scrappy WR Phil McConkey as the symbol of the NY Giants' ethos. Plus, Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen in a full-length fur coat! #sportscards #80s #baseballcards #vintagebaseballcards #nostalgia #snl #superbowl #newyorkgiants
