Artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on the accounts payable function is an issue causing concern among the accounting and accounts payable community. But that shouldn’t be the case asserts Stampli’s, Eyal Feldman. In this episode of the AP Now podcast, he Mary Schaeffer to clarify this point of view. He begins by explaining exactly what he means by artificial intelligence and machine learning … that is the machine doing the learning … not online learning facilities for professionals (which is what I thought was meant by that term the first few times I heard it). As you can probably guess, the applicability of these concepts to the accounts payable function, and more specifically the invoice handling processes is huge. Eyal explains how these applications work. He also explains why he doesn’t see AI as a big threat and how it is just the next evolution in the business world today. He too believes new jobs will be created. This episode focuses on two-lost invoices that almost led to Eyal Feldman losing his job. He joins AP Now’s host, Mary Schaeffer to describe the event and discuss the lessons learned from that episode and how he used those lessons to build Stampli’s AP bot, Billy. While many listeners will empathize with the story, few will have had the heart-stopping experience of nearly losing one of their organization’s largest clients due to lost invoices. In this episode, Eyal describes how surprised he was to learn of all the people who need to be in the loop in order to get a simple invoice paid. He also discusses the numerous problems encountered in this task – which seems simple to outsiders, but not so much once you start working with it. Not coming from the accounts payable side of things initially, he was amazed to discover that getting an invoice paid was not a simple endeavor but one that required collaboration and cooperation among many different parties.
