Last Word on Habs Pod: Montreal Canadiens Belong The Habs and Vegas Golen Knights are tied in their Stanley Cup Semifinal series at 2-2. If anything, the Habs have proved to the hockey world, they are full value for being in this position. The series has been fairly even, and a case could be made that the Habs have carried the play for the most part. Our hosts break down the first four games and how well the Habs are playing on balance. Still, the series is tied and is now a best of three. The Habs need to keep playing the team game that has worked so well for them so far these playoffs. Unfortunately, the big story coming out of this series right now is not so much about the hockey but the absolutely atrocious officiating. It's sad that this has to be discussed but it's the NHL's own fault. All this and COVID issues, Jo's hockey exploits, Quebec holidays and much much more! TUNE IN! Last Word on Habs Pod: Ride the Wave This week, the guys recap the Habs sweep of the Winnipeg Jets in the North Division Final. Both hosts agree that the Mark Scheifele incident sucked the life out of the Jets. There was no real pushback from the Jets after game one. The guys then have some words about Sheifele's lack of accountability and remorse for his hit. With the Jets in the rearview, the guys turn their attention to the Vegas Golden Knights. The Stanley Cup Semi-Final (we think that's what it's called) begins Monday at 9 PM in Vegas. The Habs are (again) in though, but there seems to be something about this Habs team that has the guys believing. Johannes and Connor break down how the teams match up to see which team has the advantage. After breaking it down, the guys give their predictions for the series (spoilers, they both have the Habs). All this and revenge factors, Jeff Petry's health, special teams, the temptations of Las Vegas, and much much more! TUNE IN! Last Word on Habs Pod: Sitting Pretty The guys are back to talk about the Habs 2-0 series lead over the Winnipeg Jets. Game one played out very much as our hosts predicted. The Jets were a bit rusty and sloppy and the Habs took advantage. The 5-3 scoreline was a bit flattering for the Jets. Still, the game was overshadowed by Mark Scheifele's hit on Jake Evans at the end of the game. Evans is out indefinitely with a concussion while Scheifele has been suspended for four games. Both are big losses to their respective teams. Needless to say, the fallout was rather ridiculous on social media and in the actual media. Still, there are games to play and the Habs were able to keep their focus and win a tight-checking 1-0 game two. They now return home with an opportunity to close out the series. The Habs have won five games in a row and whatever they are doing, it seems to be working. All this and lineup changes, feeling confident, the dangers of looking ahead and much much more! TUNE IN! Last Word on Habs Pod: Moving On The guys come back on a very special episode of the pod to discuss the Habs big game seven win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. While a game seven is always stressful, the guys talk about how it didn't quite feel the same pressure or stress for this one. The feeling was aided by the Leafs lack of urgency in the game, which was surprising. What was also surprising was the fact the Habs came back from a 3-1 series deficit to knock their rivals out of the playoffs. Surprising and joyous. The game followed several tropes for the Leafs in their game seven disappointments. A bad goal, a lack of urgency, no production from their top players. While a lot of focus will be spent on the Leafs playoff failures, the Habs are moving on to face the well-rested Winnipeg Jets. It will be interesting to see how the Habs change their game plan against the bigger Jets. The guys are both picking the Habs to win then series and game one will be vital. All this and lineup decisions, Leafs fans, the Habs playoff schedule and much much more! TUNE IN! After splitting the first two games, the Toronto Maple Leafs took games three and four in a decisive fashion. The Habs looked like they were on their way out. However, the Habs then won five and six in overtime to force a game seven. With the big game coming up, the guys talk about their keys to the game. Both hosts agree the first five or ten minutes will go a long way in determining how the game will go. Connor thinks the longer the Habs are in the game, the more the pressure of past failures will start to weigh on the Leafs. Johannes wonders how real of a thing that is. Either way, a game seven felt like an impossibility a week ago, so let's just ride the wave. All this and sports psychology, player usage, playoff baggage, and much much more! TUNE IN! Last Week on Habs Pod: Montreal Canadiens Inconsistency It's been two games into the Habs playoff matchup with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The good news is the series is tied at 1-1. The bad news is some concerning issues from the Habs regular season are seeping into the playoffs. The Habs took game one, although the big story was a scary injury to Leafs Captain John Tavares. It was a fluke play but Tavares is out for the series with a concussion. Both Connor and Johannes wish Tavares a speedy recovery. Unfortunately, the injury took on a life of its own in some circles of the media. The guys touch on the irresponsibility of some media outlets of tapping into rage culture and trying to create an issue where there was none. Game two the Leafs came out much better. The Habs did themselves no favors by taking four straight (almost back-to-back) penalties in the second period. There was also a bizarre coaches challenge that further put the Habs on the back foot, especially since it seems like it was Habs GM making the call on the review. The game was also marred by questionable officiating. All this and Habs roster moves, fixing the power play, long-term plans, game three expectations, and much much more. TUNE IN! The Habs have qualified for the NHL playoffs! Even if they backed in on a five-game losing streak. The focus now shifts to their first-round matchup with the rival Toronto Maple Leafs. The Habs are enjoying a bit of a rest right now as their series with the Leafs only begins on Thursday, May 20. That gives them eight days off to rest up after a very grueling schedule. On top of that, the Habs are getting healthy as well. We can expect Brendan Gallagher, Carey Price, Shea Weber, and Phillip Danault are all expected to return to the lineup. This means, there will be some players on the outside looking in when the series starts. One player not returning for the playoffs is Jonathan Drouin. All this and series predictions, conditioning stints, reasonable Leafs fans, and much, much more! TUNE IN! Last Word on Habs Pod: Habs Find Their Stride After a disappointing week, the Habs seemed to find their stride. And at the right time. While far from perfect, the Habs found ways to get the job done and that is all that matters at this time. Interestingly, the Habs better play has come while some key players are out injured. Jonathan Drouin has taken a leave of absence from the team for personal reasons. It's irresponsible to guess what the issue is, but both guys wish him well. Tomas Tatar, Shea Weber and Paul Byron have also joined Carey Price and Brendan Gallagher on the injury list. For whatever reason, the Habs have looked much fresher in their last two games with all the injuries. All this and Cole Caufield scores, a changing of the guard, Nick Suzuki finds his scoring touch, scoreboard watching, and much much more! TUNE IN! The Montreal Canadiens are falling apart, again. The failure of this team is in all phases. The defense can't defend, the offense can't score, their special teams are bad and they can't transition. The collapse is on and it looks like there is no way to save it. In their most important week of the season, the Habs laid an egg. They failed to show up in the first two games against the Calgary Flames, who are chasing the Habs for the final playoff spot. In what seems like an insurmountable lead in the standings, the Flames now sit four points back after taking the first two of a three-game set (the last game is Monday). Overall, the Habs went 1-3 in the week, and it doesn't get any easier. Compounding the on-ice issues, the Habs have Cole Caufield with the team, but only to practice. Due to the salary cap and call-up rules, Caufield is unlikely to see NHL action. The issue is two-fold. The Habs mismanaged their cap and call-ups which is preventing them from using Caufield. The other is why they aren't sending Caufield back to Laval to play in actual games. All this and, player's comments to the media, Habs fandom, and much much more. TUNE IN! Last Word on Habs Pod: Montreal Canadiens are Lost This week the guys look back on the trade deadline and what he Habs did. Can Jonathon Merrill and Erik Gustafsson help the Habs struggling defense? Well, their quarantine period is coming to an end so we will see this week, hopefully. The Habs had some games to play also. Unfortunately for the fans, we had to watch them. On the bright side, the Habs went 2-2 in their four games. The bad part is they looked absolutely terrible in the last three games. Something is not right in Habs land. The guys do their best to get to the bottom of the issue. They also try to keep their spirits up... not an easy task. All this and coaching decisions, does Cole Caufield play with the Habs this year, the schedule, is Marc Bergevin making lineup decisions, will the Habs make the playoffs, and much much more! TUNE IN! Last Word on Habs Pod: Montreal Canadiens Humbled It's been a rough week for the Montreal Canadiens. After a seemingly character-building win over the Edmonton Oilers, the Habs hit a wall. The Habs were humbled by the Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets. On top of the three losses, the Habs also lost Brendan Gallagher and Carey Price to injury. Gallagher is out for six weeks with a broken finger. Price, as usual, is shrouded in mystery. With the Habs clearly struggling something needs to be done. The trade deadline is here, so if Marc Bergevin has a move to make, he better do it now. The hopes are he does something drastic, but the reality is probably nothing. Still, we can hope! All this and Cole Caufield's debut, Eric Staal's usage, coaching decisions, and much much more! Last Word on Habs Pod: Montreal Canadiens Return to Action The Habs were back in action this week after having four games canceled due to COVID protocols. The week started off well, as the Canadiens looked rested and fresh and took care of business against the Edmonton Oilers and Ottawa Senators in some convincing fashion. Carey Price even got his first shutout of the year, while Jake Allen ALMOST got his as well. Unfortunately, the week ended on a sour note against those damn pesky Sens. The game really exposed the Canadieins' shortcomings in their own end. It's a big problem that needs to be addressed. The big news moving forward is Eric Staal can now play for the Habs after his quarantine period ended. Habs coach Dominique Ducharme said Staal would play the Habs next game against the Oilers Monday. It will be interesting to see he is used in his first game with the bleu, blanc, rouge. Along with Staal, the debut of Cole Caufield is also getting fans excited. It seems he will start the year in Laval but it's would not be surprising to see him get a look with the Habs this year. All this and Connor McDavid's elbow, Connor's interactions with Edmonton media, trade talk much much more. TUNE IN! Big in spite of having all their games cancelled due to COVID protocol. That was the first big news of the week for the Canadiens and the NHL. The Habs had their big three-game set against the Edmonton Oilers and their game against the Ottawa Senators postponed. So far things have not progressed any more since the initial news that two players were positive for the virus. As if this wasn't enough big news, the NHL had a fire to put out. Senior referee Tim Peel was caught on a hot mic saying something everyone already knows. He was caught saying he was looking to make a call against the Nashville Predators to make up for an earlier call. It was quite shocking to actually hear it said, even if NHL officiating in general shows the fans that's how they operate. The fallout was interesting, to say the least. Not to be outdone, Habs GM Marc Bergevin made some moves this week, including making a trade for Eric Staal. Staal was one of the bigger names being made available so it was a bit shocking to see Bergevin make the move. Then again, the price was quite favourable, and to make it work with the cap, he got the Buffalo Sabres to retain some salary. He followed that up by signing top prospect Cole Caufield to an ELC. The question becomes: are the Habs done? One this is for sure, nobody can take Bergevin at his word. All this and Johannes' hockey school stories, Marc Bergevin's believability, and much much more. Both, actually. The Habs secured their first extra time victory over the Vancouver Canucks, a shootout win! To top it off they did in their reverse retro jerseys. So the week isn't all bad. The issue is the Habs can't string wins together. The guys then talk about the recent struggles of Shea Weber. The guys wonder if the Habs captain is playing hurt or if the condensed schedule is wearing out the Man Mountain. Johannes things the Habs need to find a way to limit his minute to keep him fresh but Connor questions who on the Habs defence can take those minutes. One thing is certain, the Habs are going to need their captain at his best if they want to make any noise in the playoffs. All this and trade talk, jersey talk, 3 on 3 strategy, Carey Price, and much much more. TUNE IN! Last Word on Habs Pod: Same Old Montreal Canadiens In an important week for the Habs, they failed to come through. It was more of the same, unfortunately. Poor play in overtime, limited offense, and defensive breakdowns that left the goaltending out to dry. With the season (almost) in the balance, the Habs need to find a way to get back on track, or at least get more consistent play. One thing is for sure, the Habs recent play has both our hosts with a sense of deja-vu. The only thing left to do is add to the roster. It won't be easy with the Habs salary cap situation, but that doesn't mean they have no options. It will be interesting to see when (or if) Marc Bergevin makes a move. If he looks outside the North Division, there is a 14 day quarantine period, so it may be in his best interest to move sooner rather than wait until the April 12 trade deadline. On the ice, they ended their five-game losing streak and took five of a possible six points. Off the ice, the team made the move to fire goaltending coach Stephane Waite. The move itself was not the issue, but the timing, after a win over the Ottawa Senators and in a game Carey Price looked his normal self. The move led to a lot of media and fan speculation about the actual firing and who was pushing for it. The guys discuss how the move was handled and press conference explaining the move. Johannes definitely has some thoughts. Still, on the ice, the Habs seemed to turn back the clock to January. It was refreshing to see some lineup changes that seemed to spark the Habs dormant offense. Hopefully, the Habs can continue their momentum on their dreaded west coast trip coming up. Last Word on Habs Pod: Montreal Canadiens in Freefall This week, the guys catch up on the latest Habs news after being off for a week. The Habs have been in complete disarray the last 10 games. So much so that it cost head coach Claude Julien and associate coach Kirk Muller their jobs. While nobody is wishing anyone ill, it seemed overdue for a change in the Habs dressing room. Too many consistent issues that plagued the Canadiens through multiple seasons could no longer be ignored. Now it's up to interim coach, Dominique Ducharme, to right the ship. In his first two games, there were some troubling signs. Still, it is such a unique season, is it even possible to judge Ducharme or what he wants to do when there is limited practice time. The guys will impart their wisdom to see if they can help the new head coach navigate this difficult situation. One thing is for sure, Ducharme will need some of the Habs best players to find their form, otherwise, it might be a long season. If the Habs continue to spiral, one thing is for sure, Marc Bergevin's seat will become incredibly hot. All this and the Habs current skid, what is going on with Philip Danault and Carey Price, language issues, late-night not well thought through conspiracy theories, and much much more! Tune in! A big week against the Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers left the guys, and the fans, frustrated. After storming out of the gates, the Habs have COOLED off. Everything seems to be a challenge for them at the moment, especially scoring goals. It's been two frustrating weeks for Habs fans who have to be wondering which version of the Habs is the one they should expect the rest of the way. What's to blame? Coaching? Players? The Bell Centre? The reverse retro's? The guys break it down. They guys then talk about the struggles of Phillip Danault. The Habs center has been struggling this year. The guys wonder if Danault's contract situation is affecting his game. Whatever it is, Danault is hurting his value and the Habs on-ice product. With Tomas Tatar being scratched, the guys wonder if Danault should have been the one to sit. All this and Victor Mete talk, is Carey Price still the best in the league, other teams the guys watch, TV shows to watch during the week off and much much more! TUNE IN! Two convincing win over the Vancouver Canucks was followed by two frustrating games against the Ottawa Senators. While the Habs did take six out of eight points, their struggles against the Sens left our hosts a bit furstrated. The topic of headshots came up again after Jake Evans suffered a hit to the head from the Senators Erik Gudbranson. That is three headshots to Habs players that have gone unpunnished from the Department of Player Safety. The guys wonder what it is going to take for the league to take the issue seriously. All this and Victor Mete talk, Cole Caufield, Super Bowl snacks, Super Bowl picks and much much more. TUNE IN! Last Word on Habs Pod: Home at Last This week, the guys talk about the Habs two-game set against the Calgary Flames. In what felt like a month between games, the Canadiens had their home opener and looked to keep their hot start going. While the Habs looked like the better team through the two games, as Habs fans know all too well, a hot goalie is a great equalizer. Now it's time to see how the Habs bounce back after their first regulation loss. The guys then discuss the Dillon Dube hit on Jesperi Kotkaniemi. Both hosts feel that it should have been a penalty because it was a hit to the head. This leads to a larger discussion of headshots in general and potential solutions to help limit these kinds of hits in the future. One thing is for sure, these hits can't keep happening. Then the guys indulge in more hockey rumors. With Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford resigning this week, seemingly out of nowhere, speculation is that the Penguins might be looking to rebuild. So would the Penguins consider moving on from Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin? If so, how much fun would it be to see Crosby in a Habs uniform? All this and Victor Mete, Brendan Kelly, opening ceremony, cold weather, and much much more! TUNE IN! Last Word on Habs Pod: Montreal Canadiens Depth This week, the guys talk about the high octane Montreal Canadiens. The Habs offensive output this young season is the best in the league. After years of struggling to score goals and sweat out games, the guys find it refreshing to see the Habs scoring goals, almost at will. All the new additions have made an impact so far. For GM Marc Bergevin, it's been as perfect a start he could have wished for. It's been a very fun start of the season for Habs fans. Still, there are things the Habs need to work on. The Habs are taking way too many penalties and their penalty kill has been a bit suspect. The Habs discipline has been a major part of their two losses this year. Then the guys talk about the big trade of the week between the Winnipeg Jets and Columbus Blue Jackets. The guys talk about some of the takes they saw online about the move and about the players. Who was to blame for these players wanting out of their teams? The biggest takeaway is that these players might be right back in the same situation in 12 months from now. All this and Phillip Danault Talk, Victor Mete's future with the team, the Habs opening ceremonies, honoring the front line workers, the Habs crazy schedule, and much much more! TUNE IN!! A bit later than usual but we've never done this during a pandemic. Since it's been a hot minute, the guys discuss the new-look Montreal Canadiens and if they like the moves made in the off-season. Then they give some predictions for the year. Since the guys are a bit late, there are already some games to discuss. Do the new-look Habs look any different from when we last saw them? With the new alignment, are the guys excited to see the same team nine times throughout the season? Will it lead to new and heated rivalries? Last Word on Habs Pod: Montreal Canadiens Off-Season Primer This week on the Last Word on Habs Pod, the guys dig in on the Habs first-round series loss to the Philadelphia Flyers. The Habs played better than expected but were still undone by some common issues. While fans are feeling great after the teams showing, it might need to be met with some caution about the team moving forward. Next, the guys dig in on the 'drama' around the Habs. Max Domi removed the Montreal Canadiens info from all his social media paged. Phillip Danault said he is unwilling to take a reduced role on the team, despite the emergence of Nick Suzuki and Jesperi Kotkaniemi. The guys then discuss what the Habs should do with their 2021 free agents. If they are not part of the long term plans, should the Habs move them and get some assets in return rather than risk losing them for nothing. After dealing with the issues in-house, it's time to see how the Habs can improve the team. There is the draft, where the Habs are picking in the top 16. There is free agency, but with a flat cap, it will be interesting to see how teams operate. Speaking of the flat cap, trades might become a big way to improve the team. The Habs do have a significant amount of cap space they can use. They could leverage a cap-strapped team into parting with valuable assets for cap relief. All this and how an NHL regular season could look, the NHL not taking a stand, social issues, and much much more! TUNE IN! ** This will be the last episode of the Last Word on Habs Pod until the NHL draft and free agency, baring any major Habs new. Last Word on Habs Pod: Montreal Canadiens Holding Their Own This week Connor and Johannes discuss the medical scare Habs coach Claude Julien had prior to game two. Thankfully Julien is back in Montreal recovering but the team and Habs nation had a serious scare. With Kirk Muller filling in as head coach in Julen's absence General Manager Marc Bergevin made a very curious statement about the appointment to the media. The guys then discuss the Habs have looked so far in their playoff matchup with the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers lead the series 2-1 but the Habs have looked the better team on balance. Still, some of the Habs old issues have reared their ugly heads so far, which is why they are trailing in the series. Our boys then get you ready for games 4 and 5 which are back to back. Despite being down in the series, the guys think the Habs are in a good position if they can keep up their play. All this and ugly hockey, beer league triumphs, Habs future, and much, much more. Last Word on Habs Pod: Montreal Canadiens Playoff Preview 'This week, the guys break down how the Habs were able to get past the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL play-in. The guys also discuss if they like the concept of the play-in round in general. Johannes was all in to start but Connor seems to have converted, somewhat. The guys talk about the draft lottery, which was won by the New York Rangers. That means they have the first overall pick and are picking Alexis Lafreniere. Johannes has a hot take/prediction about the longer-term future of Lafreniere in New York. Then our hosts talk about the Habs match up in the first round against the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers have looked very impressive so far, winning the round-robin seeding by going 3-0. Connor and Johannes break down where they see the Habs might be able to take advantage and pull off another upset. All this and sympathy for the Maple Leafs, creative ways to get Jonathan Drouin and Max Domi going, Quebec music, and much much more. TUNE IN! Last Word on Habs Pod: Montreal Canadiens Play-in Primer On this week's episode, the guys get you all set up for the Habs play-in series against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Connor and Johannes break down the lines, matchups, and what they expect from the series. The guys try to see where the Canadiens might have an edge on the Penguins and what might lead them to an upset. Before the real games start on Saturday, there are some tune-up games to be played. The Habs will play their hated rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight. It will be interesting to see how these games play out. While the games are meaningless, they are more than just an exhibition game. It's the only game action teams will see before the playoffs. There will be some intensity to them. Teams will be hoping to come out of them as healthy as possible for sure. All this and the Seattle team name, third jersey's, NHL safety, MLB outbreak, and much much more. TUNE IN! Last Word on Habs Pod: Montreal Canadiens Return to Action On this week's episode, the guys reconnect after a few months in quarantine, so its time for a little catchup. The conversation then shifts to hockey where they discuss the very interesting draft lottery results. One of the play-in teams now has a chance to win the number one overall pick. It's a big year to land that pick as consensus top pick, Alexis Lafreniere is considered to be a generational talent. The Habs are one of those teams with a 1/8 chance of landing the Quebec native, while his ability is not in question, the guys wonder if it's fair to thrust the type of pressure he will face in Montreal on an 18-year-old. Then the guys talk about the return to NHL action, coming August 1st. They discuss how to responsibly return to action and if that is even possible. Players, coaches, and the league all need to play a pivotal role in keeping everyone safe. Part of the return to play and the 'NHL playoffs' is the Montreal Canadiens playing the Pittsburgh Penguins in a best of five play-in series. What chances do our hosts think the Habs have of making it past the Penguins? All this and Max Domi, the state of the world, COVID-19 contingencies, journalistic integrity, and much much more. Last Word on Habs Pod: Montreal Canadiens Messaging Spring break is over and the guys are back in the studio for a new pod. The guys first pay their respects to Habs and NHL Hall of Fame legend Henri Richard. The 'pocket rocket' passed away at the age of 84 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. He will be missed. Then Connor and Johannes take a deep dive into the Montreal Canadiens messaging. The guys were, like most people, were confused and frustrated by Marc Bergevin's post-trade deadline press conference. The Habs GM spent a good portion of the press-conference contradicting himself. Building off this, the guys take a look at the Habs messaging through the Bergevin years. Unfortunately, the messaging hasn't been consistent. Johannes hits us with some messaging theory to help explain why the Habs are failing at delivering a strong message to their fans. The transactional model of communication suggests that information is sent and received simultaneously through noisy channels - each level involves a frame of reference, level of experience, and expectation. It's a very interesting way to analyze the Habs messaging and expectations they deliver to the fans and media. All this and the weeks that was, the week to come, Bergevin's apology tour, Claude Julien's vote of confidence and much much more. TUNE IN! Last Word on Habs Pod: Montreal Canadiens at the Trade Deadline This week the guys record during the final minutes of the NHL trade deadline. They discuss the Habs moves, including trading fan-favorite Ilya Kovalchuk and Nate Thompson. While the guys were recording, TSN's Pierre Lebrun said the Habs weren't done but the guys could not wait around to find out what that was. So they played a game of small trade and big trade. Both guys throw out potential small and big trades they think the Habs made. Names include Nick Cousins, Max Domi, Matt Dumba, Jeff Petry and Dale Weise. Will any of their premonitions turn out to be true, only time will tell. Turns out Johannes was right, Cousins was traded to Vegas after recording. Last Word on Habs Pod Final Nail in the Montreal Canadiens Coffin This week the guys commiserate over the Habs four-game losing streak. It essentially ends all hope for the Habs making the playoffs. It also showed the guys (and Habs fans in general) the gap between the Habs and true Cup contenders. Then the guys take a look at the Habs under Marc Bergevin and what his plans seem to be and what the guys think they should be. They also talk about what Bergevin should do heading into the trade deadline and beyond. Johannes also wonders what a guy has to do to get fired in Montreal. After a few weeks off Connor and Johannes are back to dig into the Habs since the All-Star break. There is plenty to talk about with the Habs on a roll and pushing towards the playoffs. The guys quickly go over the last two weeks of Habs games. The team has played well, going 7-3 in their last 10 to vault themselves (somewhat) back into the playoff picture. The guys discuss if this recent push is enough to actually excited about the possibility of the playoffs. Johannes then drops three questions on Connor. First, he asks if the Habs were wise to leak that Jeff Petry and Tomas Tatar are not available at the deadline. The second question is if the Habs should sign Tatar or Max Domi. Finally, Johannes asks about a high-level executive suggesting Cole Caufield and Alexander Romanov will be on the Canadiens roster next year. It sparks some interesting debate and answers. Last Word on Habs Pod: Montreal Canadiens at the Break This week, the guys take stock of the Habs at their All-Star Break bye week. The Habs have been an up and down team all year which has landed them outside the playoffs. The guys debate if the Habs have what it takes to make it to the dance. They also debate if that would be a good thing. The guys then dig in on the long term plans for the Habs. They discuss Marc Bergevin's plan and how likely it is to succeed. Connor thinks that Bergevin is in two lanes which will not lead to much success. Talk then shifts to the draft as Johannes believes the Habs need to make a splash in front of their fans. The guys then talk about the impact of Ilya Kovalchuk on the team. The Russian sniper has revived his career with the Habs and the guys talk about what the Habs should do with him long term. All this and winners and losers, the All-Star Game, the week ahead, the trade deadline and much more! Tune in! Last Word on Habs Pod: Montreal Canadiens End the Streak (Again) This week, Connor and Johannes celebrate the Habs ending their (second) eight-game winless streak. Connor thanks a higher power while Johannes celebrates the guy who ended the streak for the Habs. Then the guys need to end the celebrating and actually discuss the Habs. More importantly, what their plans should be for the rest of the year. While Marc Bergevin has said he will evaluate the state of the team after the all-star break, nothing is stopping our guys from evaluating the team right now. Connor and Johannes believe the Habs will be sellers at the trade deadline. With the draft being in Montreal, the top prospect being a Quebecoise and the Habs desperate search for a Quebec superstar, the stars are almost aligned for the Habs here. Problem is other teams have the jump when it comes to their draft lottery odds. The guys discuss the draft and how the Habs can get a realistic chance at the first overall pick. There are some interesting ideas. Johannes thinks it might be possible while Connor thinks without the first overall pick, it's a pipe dream. The guys then talk about the week to come. Neither is very optimistic about the Habs prospects for the week. While the Habs season is likely over, the Habs will need a strong week if they hope to have a prayer to get into the playoffs. All this and winners and losers, Ask Connor, Alexis Lafreniere, the Habs plans and much much more. Tune in! Last Word on Habs Pod: Montreal Canadiens Desperation Time It's a new year and with that comes a fresh new pod for everyone. Connor and Johannes are back to discuss all things Habs, including Marc Bergevin's 'bold' new acquisitions, but more on that later. First, the guys discuss the Habs pre and post Christmas road trip (and games). Things got off to a very positive start for the Habs in Western Canada, taking six of eight points before the Christmas break. Unfortunately, the wheels have since fallen off since then. Our boys in Bleu Blanc Rouge have lost five in a row, collecting one point. Things are not looking very good right now. In the wake of this dip in play, the Habs GM went out and made some typical moves by bringing in Marco Scandella via trade and signing Ilya Kovalchuk to help right the ship. Will these players help? Connor feels uninspired about the moves while Johannes is more positive. The guys dig deep on trying to figure out what the plans are for the Habs. If this season is going the way it seems, perhaps the Habs should throw in the towel and work towards the future. Either way, the next two weeks will essentially force the Habs hand. All this and winners and losers, Habs cap space, upcoming free agents, Ask Connor and much much more. Tune IN!!
