Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey joins host Adam Bittner to react to a busy week in Pittsburgh sports news. How much pressure is on Steelers coach Mike Tomlin following the firing of the Penguins' Mike Sullivan? Will he face expectations to win in 2025, after GM Omar Khan decided to keep names like George Pickens and T.J. Watt rather than trade them for future draft capital? And amid the likely signing of veteran Aaron Rodgers? Or will get get a chance to coach the team in 2026, when it holds 10 draft picks and may be able to seek its QB of the future, with names like Arch Manning, Drew Allar, LaNorris Sellers and Nico Iamaleava likely coming out of the college ranks? Later, the guys tackle the Penguins' new direction without Sullivan. What changed for GM Kyle Dubas between last year and this year, given the reality that expectations for 2024-25 were low? Could a new coach jolt the team like Dan Bylsma did in 2009 or Sullivan did in 2016 to spark Stanley Cup runs from Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang? How much runway does Kyle Dubas have to turn the Penguins into contenders? And is the perception of Sidney Crosby's involvement in front office moves fit reality? Then in the third segment, airing on the PG's Pirates YouTube channel, our duo analyzes the continued lack of results in the win-loss column despite some improvement offensively. Is this just a bad team, even if it continues to show some improvement? What does that mean for GM Ben Cherington and manager Derek Shelton in owner Bob Nutting's eyes? Is Enmanuel Valdez a useful player? Or only looking good by comparison? And how will things shake out in the rotation with Bubba Chandler becoming hard to deny in the minors, Jared Jones on the mend and Carmen Mlodzinski still struggling after the first time through opposing batting orders? If you haven't already, subscribe to the sports department's YouTube channels so you don't miss videos with our reports, columnists and their special guests.
Irish Goodbye: Mike Sullivan and Pittsburgh Penguins Part Ways 04/29/25You knew it was around the corner, but you still didn't see it coming: Mike Sullivan, two-time Stanley Cup-winning head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins is between jobs and the Pens are without a coach. Jordan DeFigio and Jeff Taylor offer their impressions and reactions to this massive news. Post-Gazette Sports columnist Jason Mackey and Penguins insider Matt Vensel react to news that the team and coach Mike Sullivan have mutually agreed to part ways. How mutual was the decision in reality? Was Sullivan ready to move on? Or was GM Kyle Dubas the prevailing force in the decision? Who could the team be looking at to replace Sullivan? What does the coaching change mean for the veteran trio of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang? Or young players like Ville Koivunen, Rutger McGroarty or Sergei Murashov? Our duo tackles those questions and more.
A tribute to Mike Sullivan. Sullivan fixed the Penguins in 2016 and won two Stanley Cups to solidify Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin's careers as three-time Stanley Cup champions and all time PGH legends in all of professional sports.
Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey joins host Adam Bittner to give his thoughts on the Steelers, the NFL draft, the end of the Penguins' season and the Pirates' West Coast road trip. On the football side, is Derrick Harmon the most uncomplicated pick for GM Omar Khan and coach Mike Tomlin? What about Kenneth Grant and Walter Nolen along the defensive line? And where do QBs Sheduer Sanders and Jaxson Dart fit into that conversation? Later, the duo reacts to Penguins GM Kyle Dubas appearing to signal in post-season comments Tuesday that he's looking more toward 2026-27 than next season in terms of competing meaningfully in the Eastern Conference. Is he being too passive with Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang on the roster? How aggressively should he shop in NHL free agency this summer? Or move bad contracts owed to Tristan Jarry, Erik Karlsson and Ryan Graves? And where does coach Mike Sullivan figure into all of it? Then finally, in a segment airing on the Post-Gazette's Pirates YouTube channel, the guys react to Andrew McCutchen's angst about his playing time. Does he deserve better from manager Derek Shelton and GM Ben Cherington? How much longer does McCutchen plan to play? And is Shelton's lineup turnover an overall problem as well? Our duo tackles those questions, then discusses the team's mediocre record when Paul Skenes is on the mound and pressure on owner Bob Nutting after loud “sell the team” chants continued during the last homestand.
Bittersweet Ending 04/21/25Jeff Taylor and Jordan DeFigio convene for a season's-end chat, at the tail end of the Penguins' 24-25 campaign. A resounding victory over Alex Ovechkin and the first place Capitals is bittersweet on the tongue, as the Pens best the Caps in game 82. On his weekly Saturday Conversations podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey welcomes Penguins broadcaster Paul Steigerwald to tackle a range of hockey topics. Can coach Mike Sullivan's team sustain its late-season momentum into next season to give Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin a chance to return to the playoffs? How much should we believe in young players and prospects like Ville Koivunen, Rutger McGroarty and Sergei Murashov? And how much can GM Kyle Dubas accomplish with his slew of NHL draft picks in upcoming lotteries? Our duo tackles those topics, then looks back on Paul's career as a broadcaster. How did it come to be after he started as the team's director of marketing? What was his relationship with Mike Lange? And what are his memories of the late play-by-play legend? What are his favorite stories from past Stanley Cup runs? When does he plan to retire? And which players does he put on the Mount Rushmore of Penguins hockey next to names like Crosby, Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr?
Jason thinks this is probably it for Evgeni Malkin after next season. Will the Penguins target next season as a bridge year or a year to try and win the Stanley Cup? Kris Letang is probably going to still play after having surgery to repair a small hole in his heart. Jason would not trade Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell. The Penguins have $24 million in cap space.

On his weekly Saturday Conversations podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey welcomes KDKA-TV's Rich Walsh to tackle some hot Pittsburgh sports topics and learn more about Rich's career in television. On the football front, Rich explains why he doesn't want the Steelers to reach for a QB like Jaxson Dart in the NFL draft and gives his thoughts on keeping George Pickens next to DK Metcalf vs. trading him for an opportunity to get back into the second round. Then our duo tackles the Pirates' slow start and Penguins GM Kyle Dubas' chances of turning the team around before Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin retire. Later, Jason learns about Rich's journey from growing up in Penn Hills to becoming a key piece of KDKA's sports coverage team; what a day in the life of a TV sports anchor looks like and how that's changed over the years; and the nuance of the medium that Rich has learned through time.

What can Sidney Crosby not do? Crosby threw a football into a target to help one fan win $1 million. Jelly Roll, Wiz Khalifa, and Snoop Dogg were there along with Sid, Ben Roethlisberger, Paul Skenes, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang. TK thinks the Penguins will likely revamp their bottom six.
Hour 1 with Joe Starkey: The Penguins have officially missed the playoffs for the third year in a row. Joe takes a hard look at the Penguins and thinks some people believe the rebuild is over. The Penguins and Steelers are designed to win around highly-paid veteran players but are not competitive at the end of the season. Florida won the national championship in a thrilling game.

Mr. Consistent: Sidney Crosby Grabs Gretzky's NHL Point-Per-Game Record! 03/27/25With an original working title of ‘Passenger Princess,' production/release of this episode was delayed until close to the start of this evening's road game versus the Sabres. And wouldn't ya know it? Just as I sat down to knock out the edit and get this one posted, Sidney Crosby does what he does best: Contribute to his team's offense. It was a beautiful goal, featuring many of Crosby's best attributes as an athlete and a teammate: On-ice awareness, positional intelligence, and a practiced ability to have quick hands, even from tough angles. The puck ended up on Sid's stick as he floated to the net front, and even though it was in-tight to his body, the captain managed to get a super-fast shot off, beating Billy Reimer high on the glove-side. Just incredible. From us here at Fly Penguins Fly Podcast: Congratulations to Sidney Crosby on a monumental achievement, as he passes Wayne Gretzky to possess the longest-ever season streak of point-per-game play in the NHL.Thanks to Espresso A Mano, Pittsburgh's finest coffee roasters and cafe, for partnering with Fly Penguins Fly podcast. On his weekly Saturday Conversations podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey welcomes for Penguins forward and current broadcaster Colby Armstrong to talk NHL trade deadlines past and present. What does Colby remember from being traded to the Atlanta Thrashers in a 2008 blockbuster that brought Marian Hossa and Pascal Dupuis back to Pittsburgh? What were Sidney Crosby's feelings about the deal, given his close relationship with Colby? What are some funny stories he has from that period in Penguins history, when Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Marc-Andre Fleury were leading a resurgence? And what makes a trade so awkward for a player? Our duo tackles those questions as well as the path that led Colby into broadcasting; his relationship with Crosby as a source; the wild trade rumors swirling around Crosby and the Colorado Avalanche; and an array of current Penguins topics. What does GM Kyle Dubas need to do to get the franchise back on track? And how much can a slew of upcoming NHL draft picks help the franchise?

Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey joins host Adam Bittner to analyze discontent in the Steelers fan base over coach Mike Tomlin, owner Art Rooney II and the franchise's recent drought of NFL playoff wins. Do any moves GM Omar Khan could make this offseason matter as long as Tomlin is the coach and Rooney is the owner? Or will the franchise be doomed until big changes are made? And if there's hope, what moves could Khan make in NFL free agency, the NFL draft or the trade market to improve the mood of the fan base? Is it a splash at quarterback with options including Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers? A move for a big-time receiver opposite George Pickens? A new anchor for the defensive line? Or a proven cornerback opposite Joey Porter Jr.? Our duo ponders those questions, then pivots to Penguins. What's the most disappointing piece of their performance coming out of the break for the 4 Nations Face-off? Is it the goaltending with Joel Blomqvist and Alex Nedeljkovic? Struggling defensemen like Erik Karlsson? Or simply the effort level surrounding stars like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang? Then in the third segment, airing on the new PG Pirates YouTube channel, Adam and Jason toss around some Pirates topics. Would it make sense to sign free agent first baseman Anthony Rizzo, given the team's need at that position following the Spencer Horwitz injury? Or is Rizzo and other free agent options like Jose Abreu or Yuli Gurriel too far past their prime? What does Jason think of the Andrew Heaney signing? And what does it mean for the depth of the rotation? Could the Pirates get creative to try to limit innings for Paul Skenes, Jared Jones and Mitch Keller?

Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey joins host Adam Bittner to react to the passing of legendary Penguins broadcaster Mike Lange late Wednesday night at the age of 76. What legacy does he leave the team, NHL and hockey community at large? What are some of Jason's best memories of getting to know Mike on a personal level over the years? What were some of his best moments on the mic? And why is he every bit a piece of franchise lore alongside on-ice heroes like Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin? Our duo tackles those poignant questions, then dives into some hockey talk about the U.S. vs. Canada championship match of the Four Nations Face-off. Can Penguins coach Mike Sullivan and his American team recreate their defensive magic from the first matchup over the weekend. Will there be more booing and fisticuffs? And has this tournament reminded the right people that Crosby remains every bit the face of hockey and Team Canada that Connor McDavid is? Then later, Adam and Jason ponder Penn State's College Football Playoff chances next season following Jason's column on the topic. Are the returns of Drew Allar, Nick Singleton, Kaytron Allen and Dani Dennis-Sutton enough to make this program a dominant force? Or will it need transfer additions at wide receiver like Devonte Ross and Kyron Hudson to make an impact to take a step forward from a crushing loss to Notre Dame in the CFP semifinals at the Orange Bowl last month? In the third segment, airing on the PG's new Pirates-focused channel, the topic is payrolls disparity in MLB and the need for a salary cap to even things out. Are tight spenders like the Pirates' Bob Nutting or free spending teams like the Dodgers, Yankees and Mets the sport's biggest problem? How much should revenue sharing be part of the conversation around payroll? And how much would transparency in these matters help quell fans' angst? Adam and Jason try to answer those questions, then weigh in on some baseball topics, including the first base situation amid Spencer Horwitz's injury. Is Nick Yorke a good fit as a replacement? Why is it the right move to keep Bryan Reynolds in the outfield? And what impact can Tommy Pham have on the clubhouse culture, starting with his relationship with Oneil Cruz?
In this episode, Nick and Nick remember the life and impact of Pittsburgh Penguins play-by-play announcer Mike Lange, who passed away Wednesday at 76 years old (0:00). They also discuss the 4 Nations Face-Off Championship between the United States and Canada (5:26) and Evgeni Malkin's comments about those speculating about his retirement (14:40). Nick and Nick end the episode by sharing the most "must-watch" Penguins for the remainder of the 2024-25 regular season (24:30). Tune in! Check out our latest episodes

Mike Sullivan has coached Team USA well and the Penguins will have Evgeni Malkin and Bryan Rust on Saturday against Washington. It would be good to see a youth movement with Sidney Crosby in the next few years to win with a new goalie and new generation. Hour 3 with Bob Pompeani and Joe Starkey: Travis Kelce is contemplating retirement but thinks he has good football left. The Penguins are 37-18-10 without Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin over the years. Mark Kaboly's thoughts on Deebo Samuel and Derek Carr.
Host Adam Bittner and Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey react to Kenny Pickett's comments about his time with the Steelers at the Super Bowl. Did GM Omar Khan, coach Mike Tomlin make a mistake in moving on from their former first-round pick at QB after just two years? Now that he'll be one snap away from playing in the biggest game of the season for the Eagles against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs? Or were Russell Wilson and Justin Fields both clear enough upgrades that the move still makes sense in hindsight, even despite the late-season swoon and NFL playoffs loss to the Baltimore Ravens? Was Pickett throwing subtle shade at the Steelers locker room for being too prone to distractions? And what chances do Saquon Barkley and the Eagles have in the big game if Pickett has to replace Jalen Hurts at any point? Our duo tackles those questions, then switches focus to the Penguins, Pitt basketball and the Pirates. Did GM Kyle Dubas get enough back in the trade this week that sent Marcus Pettersson and Drew O'Connor to the Vancouver Canucks? Could Rickard Rakell be the next player moved? Is there any hope of unloading the contracts of Erik Karlsson, Ryan Graves and Tristan Jarry with an eye toward rebuilding? And what does it all mean for the core of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kirs Letang? What will the Panters' latest swoon mean for their March Madness chances? And on the Pirates front, did the signing of Tommy Pham salvage the Pirates' MLB offseason, in which Adam Frazier, Andrew McCutchen and Spencer Horwitz were the only other noteworthy adds? Or is this still a disastrous effort from GM Ben Cherington in building around his core of Paul Skenes, Jared Jones, Bryan Reynolds and others? Is there any hope of another significant move between now and the start of the regular season? And what should we think about the fan survey the team commissioned, which has been widely panned on social media?
