Are the Penguins really trying to compete, or are they tanking? Rod Woodson thinks Jalen Ramsey can play safety. Sean Gentille joins the show to discuss the Penguins plan.
Hour 1: Jeff Passan slammed Bob Nutting and his perception around baseball yesterday. Which show at the station would win a Fan golf outing? And an NHL insider makes a chilling prediction for the Penguins. Hour 2: The Pomp & Joe Show got into a heated argument yesterday over Barry Bonds. Is Pittsburgh about to make a bid for a major sporting event? And is Dom the Mariano Rivera of grilling? Hour 3: Chris Carter joins the show to talk all things Steelers! Justin Tucker has been suspended by the NFL. And did Dom take another shot at Austin Bechtold? Hour 4: Noah Hiles joins the show in-studio for the whole hour! How important is it to be a good hang? Is Ben Cherington up to something big ahead of the trade deadline? And which Pirates will get traded before the deadline?
The Post-Gazette's Adam Bittner and Jason Mackey size up the NFL free agent wide receiver market now that Aaron Rodgers is officially in the fold for the Steelers as QB. Should GM Omar Khan and coach Mike Tomlin be targeting Amari Cooper as one of the biggest names remaining? Allen Lazard as one of Rodgers' personal favorites? Or could they still convince Keenan Allen to come to Pittsburgh to play alongside names like DK Metcalf, Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson and Robert Woods? Our duo tackles those topics, as well as Jason's column on why Rodgers is the most important person in Pittsburgh sports right now. Then the guys pivot to hockey ahead of the NHL draft later this week. Should GM Kyle Dubas look to trade up? Or hold onto both of his first-round picks? Could he move draft capital to add firepower around Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang? Move out bad contracts to guys Erk Karlsson, Ryan Graves and Tristan Jarry? Or could names like Rickard Rakell and Bryan Rust be on the trade block? Then in the third segment, airing on the PG's Pirates YouTube channel, Adam and Jason analyze recent hot streaks for players including Spencer Horwitz and Nick Gonzales. Are they sustainable in the long run or just the latest flashes in the plan? Could those two guys preserve GM Ben Cherington's job by playing well? What should manager Don Kelly do with the struggling Oneil Cruz? Why is Bubba Chandler having trouble in the minors? And should Andrew McCutchen have a roster spot with this team next year if he continues to perform?
Hour 2 with Bob Pompeani and Joe Starkey: James Palmer is hearing there is a chance T.J. Watt gets over $40 million from the Steelers. Paying Watt over $40 million is extravagant. Do the Steelers need to sign Watt before Parsons? Jay Glazer thinks Tomlin-Rodgers is a 'perfect match.' Joe included Sidney Crosby, Ben Roethlisberger, Evgeni Malkin, Andrew McCutchen, Troy Polamalu
Joe included Sidney Crosby, Ben Roethlisberger, Evgeni Malkin, Andrew McCutchen, Troy Polamalu. McCutchen is one of only three players in Pittsburgh this century to win an MVP. Malkin won Rookie of the Year, MVP, two scoring titles, playoff MVP, and three Stanley Cups. Mario Lemieux is the only other Pittsburgh sports athlete to win Rookie of the Year, MVP, and playoff MVP.
Joe Starkey said yesterday that Evgeni Malkin is more talented than Sidney Crosby. Crowley says Malkin is the closest thing we had since Mario Lemieux. Pat compares this to Tiger-Jack. Where does Jaromir Jagr factor into this?
Hour 1: Are the Pirates about to trade some stars before the deadline? Paul Skenes was pulled after only four innings yesterday. And the guys turn the show into an opportunity to listen to their favorite songs. Hour 2: Is this Pirates season the most disappointing first-half in Pittsburgh sports history? Do the producers at The Fan get along? And why hasn't Penn State produced a franchise NFL QB recently? Hour 3: Did Crowley laugh at an inappropriate time during the show? Who will have had the better career start, Najee Harris or Kaleb Johnson? And Dorin hosts Quiz Intern Dom. Hour 4: Who has been the most disappointing Pirate this season? The NHL is expanding its regular season. And Jeff Hathhorn joins the show to talk about everything going on with the Pirates and Steelers.
Hour 3: Did Crowley laugh at an inappropriate time during the show? Who is the better all-time player, Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin? And Dorin hosts Quiz Intern Dom.
Should T.J. Watt be in our top five Pittsburgh athletes of the past 25 years? Watt should be a 3x Defensive Player of the Year. We would have to bump Andrew McCutchen, Evgeni Malkin, or Troy Polamalu. Jeff Patton of Baseball Card Castle joined the show with a Nick Gonzales signed card for Starkey's Card of the Week.
Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise explains why he feels the Steelers, Penguins and Pirates can all learn valuable lessons from the Oklahoma City Thunder's run to an NBA championship this season. For the Steelers, he looks at the Thunder's willingness to deal star Paul George in exchange for current stars like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and wonders if GM Omar Khan and coach Mike Tomlin should be more willing to part with names like T.J. Watt, Minkah Fitzpatrick and Cam Heyward in pursuit of draft capital. On the Penguins front, he feels GM Kyle Dubas could benefit from a willingness to move on from Stanley Cup winners like Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang. And with regard to the Pirates, he sees a need for greater player development than the club has demonstrated under GM Ben Cherington.

Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey joins host Adam Bittner to ponder some Steelers over/unders for the 2025 season. Will Aaron Rodgets surpass 3,200 yards and 22 touchdowns? Will either Jaylen Warren or Kaleb Johnson threaten the 1,000-yard mark? Can DK Metcalf get over the 1,000-yard threshold that's been a problem for Steelers receivers including George Pickens in recent years? And how many sacks will T.J. Watt record? Our duo tackles those questions, plus some Penguins topics. Can GM Kyle Dubas and new coach Dan Muse return this club to Stanley Cup caliber in short order? Or is there too big a gap with the back-to-back champion Florida Panthers right now? What should we make of conflicting reports about Evgeni Malkin's future? Will this season definitely be his last in the NHL? Or could he come back for another chance to win next to Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang? And how seriously should we take a potential sale of the team back to Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle? Then in the third segment, airing on the PG's Pirates YouTube channel, the guys talk about malaise that has set in after an encouraging early run from manager Don Kelly's team following Derek Shelton's firing. Are fans beginning to tune out? Why hasn't Ben Cherington made a move to salvage the season, as owner Bob Nutting had suggested might be possible? Could Ke'Bryan Hayes and Mitch Keller be among names that are moved before the trade deadline? Why hasn't Tommy Pham been cut yet? And did the Pirates miss an opportunity to create some must-see TV by matching up Paul Skenes and Tarik Skubal during a double header against the Detroit Tigers?
Jason Mackey joins the show to talk about why we didn't get Paul Skenes-Tarik Skubal today, if Connor McDavid could actually be a Penguin soon, if Evgeni Malkin retires after next season, the biggest Penguins move this offseason, and more!

Evgeni Malkin is reportedly not going to be back with the Penguins following the 2025-26 campaign when his contract is done. Evgeni Malkin trivia. Austin does a decent job. The Pirates have 89 games left and Joe thinks if they add one star bat, they will be a .500 team the rest of the season. Andrew McCutchen said the baseballs are dying at the warning track and he asked the MLB about it and they said there's nothing they can do about it.
Hour 3 with Joe Starkey: A recent national baseball story did not include Ben Cherington as someone on the hot seat. Buster Olney points to Seattle and Baltimore. We wonder if the GM is too comfortable. Can the Pirates trade part of their pitching to acquire a bat? When can you determine if a young guy can hit? Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey and Penguins insider Matt Vensel react to the team's hiring of New York Rangers assistant Dan Muse as head coach, replacing Mike Sullivan, over names including Mitch Love and D.J. How can he help the development of young talents including Ville Koivunen, Rutger McGroarty and Sergei Murashov? And is he the guy who can get the franchise back to Stanley Cup contention? Or is he more of a bridge coach? Our duo tackles those questions and more.

Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey joins host Adam Bittner to react to a busy week in Pittsburgh sports news. How much pressure is on Steelers coach Mike Tomlin following the firing of the Penguins' Mike Sullivan? Will he face expectations to win in 2025, after GM Omar Khan decided to keep names like George Pickens and T.J. Watt rather than trade them for future draft capital? And amid the likely signing of veteran Aaron Rodgers? Or will get get a chance to coach the team in 2026, when it holds 10 draft picks and may be able to seek its QB of the future, with names like Arch Manning, Drew Allar, LaNorris Sellers and Nico Iamaleava likely coming out of the college ranks? Later, the guys tackle the Penguins' new direction without Sullivan. What changed for GM Kyle Dubas between last year and this year, given the reality that expectations for 2024-25 were low? Could a new coach jolt the team like Dan Bylsma did in 2009 or Sullivan did in 2016 to spark Stanley Cup runs from Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang? How much runway does Kyle Dubas have to turn the Penguins into contenders? And is the perception of Sidney Crosby's involvement in front office moves fit reality? Then in the third segment, airing on the PG's Pirates YouTube channel, our duo analyzes the continued lack of results in the win-loss column despite some improvement offensively. Is this just a bad team, even if it continues to show some improvement? What does that mean for GM Ben Cherington and manager Derek Shelton in owner Bob Nutting's eyes? Is Enmanuel Valdez a useful player? Or only looking good by comparison? And how will things shake out in the rotation with Bubba Chandler becoming hard to deny in the minors, Jared Jones on the mend and Carmen Mlodzinski still struggling after the first time through opposing batting orders? If you haven't already, subscribe to the sports department's YouTube channels so you don't miss videos with our reports, columnists and their special guests.
Post-Gazette Sports columnist Jason Mackey and Penguins insider Matt Vensel react to news that the team and coach Mike Sullivan have mutually agreed to part ways. How mutual was the decision in reality? Was Sullivan ready to move on? Or was GM Kyle Dubas the prevailing force in the decision? Who could the team be looking at to replace Sullivan? What does the coaching change mean for the veteran trio of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang? Or young players like Ville Koivunen, Rutger McGroarty or Sergei Murashov? Our duo tackles those questions and more.
A tribute to Mike Sullivan. Sullivan fixed the Penguins in 2016 and won two Stanley Cups to solidify Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin's careers as three-time Stanley Cup champions and all time PGH legends in all of professional sports.
Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey joins host Adam Bittner to give his thoughts on the Steelers, the NFL draft, the end of the Penguins' season and the Pirates' West Coast road trip. On the football side, is Derrick Harmon the most uncomplicated pick for GM Omar Khan and coach Mike Tomlin? What about Kenneth Grant and Walter Nolen along the defensive line? And where do QBs Sheduer Sanders and Jaxson Dart fit into that conversation? Later, the duo reacts to Penguins GM Kyle Dubas appearing to signal in post-season comments Tuesday that he's looking more toward 2026-27 than next season in terms of competing meaningfully in the Eastern Conference. Is he being too passive with Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang on the roster? How aggressively should he shop in NHL free agency this summer? Or move bad contracts owed to Tristan Jarry, Erik Karlsson and Ryan Graves? And where does coach Mike Sullivan figure into all of it? Then finally, in a segment airing on the Post-Gazette's Pirates YouTube channel, the guys react to Andrew McCutchen's angst about his playing time. Does he deserve better from manager Derek Shelton and GM Ben Cherington? How much longer does McCutchen plan to play? And is Shelton's lineup turnover an overall problem as well? Our duo tackles those questions, then discusses the team's mediocre record when Paul Skenes is on the mound and pressure on owner Bob Nutting after loud “sell the team” chants continued during the last homestand.
On his weekly Saturday Conversations podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey welcomes Penguins broadcaster Paul Steigerwald to tackle a range of hockey topics. Can coach Mike Sullivan's team sustain its late-season momentum into next season to give Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin a chance to return to the playoffs? How much should we believe in young players and prospects like Ville Koivunen, Rutger McGroarty and Sergei Murashov? And how much can GM Kyle Dubas accomplish with his slew of NHL draft picks in upcoming lotteries? Our duo tackles those topics, then looks back on Paul's career as a broadcaster. How did it come to be after he started as the team's director of marketing? What was his relationship with Mike Lange? And what are his memories of the late play-by-play legend? What are his favorite stories from past Stanley Cup runs? When does he plan to retire? And which players does he put on the Mount Rushmore of Penguins hockey next to names like Crosby, Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr?
