"As I stood about six feet away from him, looking at his beautiful little brown eyes, and Tuffy looked right back into my eyes and actually through my soul. And at that moment, I felt like it was quite emotional, and it really felt like he knew what was going on and understood everything that was going on." – Ana Paula Tavares For decades, chimpanzees in the United States were used in biomedical research, sent into space, kept as pets, and made to perform for our entertainment. Many spent years, some most of their lives, in cages, separated from other chimpanzees, and denied almost everything that would have made their lives their own. Save the Chimps exist to give some of those lives back. On 150 acres in Florida, more than 200 rescued chimpanzees live in large family groups on island habitats. Some arrive knowing exactly what to do with grass and open sky. Others have spent so long on concrete and behind bars that it can take months or even years before they feel safe enough to step outside. Ana Paula Tavares is the CEO of Save the Chimps. She came to the sanctuary after a career that took her from studying dance in New York to working in conservation around the world. But until Save the Chimps, she had never even met a chimpanzee. In this conversation, we talk about Taffy, Tonka, Vanilla, and some of the other extraordinary chimpanzees at the sanctuary. What happens when an animal has spent decades in captivity and sees open sky or feels grass for the first time. And what chimpanzees can teach us about friendship, forgiveness, family, and second chances. As Ana Paula says, "for many of the chimpanzees at Save the Chimps, the greatest gift we can give them isn't the islands or the open space. It's each other."

Welcome back to Living Your Truth with Tavares.I'm your host, Tavares Garrett, and welcome to Season 11, Episode 11.Today's episode is deeply personal. It's about something I think many of us experience but rarely talk about. It's called...Reminding Yourself of You.Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought,"I don't even recognize myself anymore."Not because you've changed physically...But because somewhere along the journey...You lost pieces of yourself.Maybe life happened.Maybe trauma happened.Maybe parenthood.Maybe marriage.Maybe divorce.Maybe addiction.Maybe grief.Maybe success.Maybe failure.Maybe years of putting everyone else first.Whatever the reason...One day you woke up and realized...You've been surviving for so long...That you forgot who you are outside of survival.Today's episode is about coming home to yourself. It's about remembering your voice.Your values.Your purpose.Your joy.Your strength.Your identity.Because the world spends enough time telling you who you should become.Sometimes you need to stop...And remember who you've always been.Love Yourself, Love Each Other and Live Your Truth,LYTWT PodcastTavares A Garrett Links:https://linktr.ee/tavaresagarrettAmazon Books by TAG Publishinghttps://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B08778562HThe Body Synthesis Mind, Body, Nutrition, Results. Politics, pressure campaigns, and federal bombshells. Steve Tavares, Trishala Vinnakota, and special co-host Justin Berton break down explosive new court filings in the federal corruption case against former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and the Duong family. Prosecutors allege Thao threatened to abandon a lucrative modular housing deal if East Bay Insiders published a story about former San Leandro Councilmember Bryan Azevedo's conduct during a trip to Vietnam. They also allege the Duongs paid former East Bay Insiders co-host Shawn Wilson $10,000 to suppress the story. We also examine the latest in the CA14 special election including how Melissa Hernandez's divorce records raise new questions about a central theme of her campaign biography. Plus, Oakland Department of Transportation Director Josh Rowan's remarkable broadside against City Hall, and Steve's latest conspiracy about a monster escaping from a Port of Oakland shipping container. Of course, Justin denies the claim.

This week on About Art, Heidi Zuckerman speaks with artist Tavares Strachan.Born in Nassau, Bahamas, Strachan works across sculpture, installation, painting, performance, and research-based practice. His ambitious projects draw from history, science, exploration, and cultural memory to illuminate stories that have been overlooked or omitted from dominant historical narratives. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale, Prospect New Orleans, and major museums and public collections around the world.Together they discuss curiosity, freedom, storytelling, exploration, failure, joy, magic, scientific discovery, and the responsibility of questioning inherited narratives. Tavares reflects on growing up in the Bahamas, the relationship between curiosity and freedom, why love is a choice, and how art expands our understanding of what is possible.A conversation about imagination, wonder, and the enduring human desire to make meaning through art.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome back to Living Your Truth with Tavares.I'm your host, Tavares Garrett, and welcome to Season 11, Episode 10.Today's conversation is one that I believe every single person needs to hear. It's about two of the most powerful letters in the English language.N...O.No.Such a simple word.Yet for so many people, it's one of the hardest words to say. Why?Because saying no often comes with guilt.Fear.Anxiety.The fear of disappointing someone. The fear of rejection. The fear of conflict. The fear of being misunderstood. So instead of saying no...We overcommit. We overextend. We overexplain. We people-please.And eventually...We become exhausted trying to keep everyone else happy while quietly neglecting ourselves.Today's episode isn't about becoming selfish. It's about becoming intentional. It's about learning that every time you say yes to something...You're automatically saying no to something else.Your time.Your energy.Your peace.Your health.Your family.Your purpose. So today, let's talk about the power of saying no—and why it may be one of the healthiest decisions you ever learn to make.Love Yourself, Love Each Other and Live Your Truth,LYTWT PodcastTavares A Garrett Links:https://linktr.ee/tavaresagarrettAmazon Books by TAG Publishinghttps://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B08778562HThe Body Synthesis Mind, Body, Nutrition, Results. Welcome back to Living Your Truth with Tavares.I'm your host, Tavares Garrett, and this is Season 11, BONUS Episode. Today's conversation is about one-word KEHLANI.WE CELEBRATE YOU KEHLANI!!!Kehlani Ashley Parrish was born on April 24, 1995, in Oakland, California. They were adopted and raised by their aunt when their mother, who had a drug addiction, served time in jail. Kehlani's father, who also had a drug addiction, died when they were a toddler. During their teenage years, they attended the Oakland School for the Arts, where they initially practiced dance, particularly ballet and modern dance.Early in her life, Kehlani aspired to train as a dancer at the Juilliard School, but they had a knee injury in junior high, which led them to turn their attention towards singing. While living with their aunt, Kehlani was exposed almost exclusively to R&B and neo soul artists, such as Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, whom today they describe as some of their early musical influences. When they were 14, Kehlani was recruited to join a local pop cover band, PopLyfe.Kehlani's singing career effectively began when they started out as a member and lead vocalist for the group called PopLyfe. The band's music was produced by former Tony! Toni! Tone! member D'Wayne Wiggins. Within two years, the group performed throughout the Bay Area and other cities. In 2011, they auditioned for the sixth season of America's Got Talent, and eventually finished in fourth place. During their final appearance, judge Piers Morgan told Kehlani, "You've got real talent, but I don't think you need the group."Kehlani is a vegan. They have spoken about their past experiences being a survivor of sexual assault and rape.Kehlani has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and bipolar disorder. In an interview with Power 106, Kehlani discusses their attempted suicide was due to the negative media response as well as their first major heartbreak. They state that their album was therapeutic through their difficult time. During their recovery, they got a tattoo that says "perdida y encontrada" which in English translates to "lost and found".Today we're going to explore the album KEHLANI, and why so many people love it, what it says about personal responsibility, and how accountability can become one of the greatest forms of freedom you'll ever experience. Welcome back to Living Your Truth with Tavares.I'm your host, Tavares Garrett, and this is Season 11, Episode 9.Today's conversation is about one word that has the power to completely transform your life.Accountability.Now, let's be honest. Most people don't like accountability. Why?Because accountability requires something many people avoid:Ownership.Ownership of our choices.Ownership of our habits.Ownership of our attitudes.Ownership of our healing.Ownership of our future. And here's what I've learned over the years:The moment you stop blaming everyone else...is the moment your life begins to change.Accountability isn't about guilt. It isn't about shame. It isn't about beating yourself up.It's about looking in the mirror and saying:"This is where I am... and I have the power to influence where I go next."That is one of the most empowering realizations a person can have.Today we're going to explore what accountability really means, why so many people resist it, what science says about personal responsibility, and how accountability can become one of the greatest forms of freedom you'll ever experience.Love Yourself, Love Each Other and Live Your Truth,LYTWT PodcastTavares A Garrett Links:https://linktr.ee/tavaresagarrettAmazon Books by TAG Publishinghttps://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B08778562HThe Body Synthesis Mind, Body, Nutrition, Results. Welcome back to Living Your Truth with Tavares. This is Season 11, Episode 7.Today we're talking about something that I think almost everyone experiences at some point in life, but very few people talk about openly.Being "Out to Lunch Mentally."You know what I mean. You're physically present, but mentally somewhere else. You're sitting in a meeting, but your mind is replaying an argument. You're having dinner with family, but you're worrying about tomorrow. You're driving down the road and suddenly realize you don't remember the last five miles. You're talking to someone you care about, but you're only half-listening because your mind is carrying the weight of a hundred different thoughts. You look present. But internally? You're checked out.Today, I want to explore what happens when our minds become overloaded, distracted, exhausted, or disconnected from the present moment.Because if we're not careful, we can spend years physically showing up while mentally being absent from our own lives.Tavares A Garrett Linkshttps://linktr.ee/tavaresagarrettAmazon Books by TAG Publishinghttps://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B08778562HThe Body Synthesis Mind, Body, Nutrition, Results. Samuel Taveras's story begins before he ever had a chance to speak. Born prematurely at just six months in a developing country, he spent the first three months of his life fighting to survive through constant medical emergencies and uncertainty. Complications from his birth left him blind in one eye, but the physical challenges were only the beginning. By the age of five, Samuel had already witnessed death, violence, and chaos firsthand including a fatal car crash outside his home and a violent police encounter that would leave lasting psychological scars and shape the way he viewed the world. At six years old, Samuel immigrated to New York City, stepping into an entirely new life filled with culture shock, fear, and survival. Growing up surrounded by gang activity and even experiencing a school shooting during middle school, he learned early how fragile life could be. Yet despite the darkness around him, Samuel refused to follow the destructive paths so many others did. Through discipline, structure, and determination, he stayed focused through high school and college, trying to build a life different from the chaos he had witnessed. But it was his years working as an Uber driver that exposed him to humanity in its rawest form. From robberies and violent crime scenes to transporting injured victims to hospitals, Samuel found himself face-to-face with trauma once again. Conversations with first responders and people living dangerous lifestyles gave him an unfiltered look into violence, addiction, death, and survival. Rather than becoming hardened by it, Samuel became a voice of influence for those around him encouraging friends to leave behind destructive lifestyles and pursue something better before it was too late. One life-altering moment came during a violent road rage incident that spiraled out of control in seconds. What began as frustration at a stoplight turned into a brutal physical confrontation that left Samuel shaken emotionally and mentally. In the aftermath, he was forced to confront difficult truths about anger, escalation, and the unpredictability of people. Instead of allowing the experience to consume him, he transformed it into fuel for growth dedicating himself to jiu-jitsu training, tactical shooting, and a deeper commitment to discipline, accountability, and emotional control. In this powerful episode, Samuel Taveras opens up about survival, trauma, fear, resilience, and the lessons learned from living in constant proximity to violence. His story is not just about enduring hardship, it's about what happens when someone chooses growth over bitterness and self-awareness over destruction. This conversation explores the psychological weight of trauma, the importance of personal responsibility, and the lifelong pursuit of becoming stronger mentally, emotionally, and physically in a world that can change forever in a single moment. Welcome back to Living Your Truth with Tavares. This is Season 11, Episode 6.Today we're talking about something that every person wants, but very few people intentionally create:Clarity.Clarity about your life.Clarity about your purpose.Clarity about your relationships.Clarity about your next steps.Clarity about who you are becoming. And if we're honest, one of the most frustrating feelings in life is confusion. Not knowing what to do.Not knowing what decision to make. Not knowing who to trust. Not knowing what direction to take.Confusion creates anxiety.Confusion creates hesitation.Confusion creates fear. But here's what I've learned:Clarity isn't something you find.Clarity is something you create. Most people are waiting for clarity to arrive. They're waiting for the perfect sign. The perfect opportunity. The perfect answer. But clarity often emerges through action, reflection, and honesty.Today we're going to talk about how clarity shapes every aspect of life, why so many people struggle to find it, and practical ways to develop it for yourself.LYTTavares A Garrett Linkshttps://linktr.ee/tavaresagarrettAmazon Books by TAG Publishinghttps://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B08778562HThe Body Synthesis Mind, Body, Nutrition, Results. Welcome back to Living Your Truth with Tavares. This is Season 11, Episode 5.Today we're talking about a word that has the power to transform every area of your life:Discipline. Now, when people hear the word discipline, many immediately think of restriction. They think of sacrifice.Rules.Pressure.Pain.But I want to challenge that perspective today.Because discipline isn't punishment.Discipline is self-respect in action. It's the ability to keep commitments to yourself long after the excitement fades. It's doing what needs to be done even when you don't feel like doing it.And if we're being honest, most people don't fail because they lack talent. Most people don't fail because they lack intelligence. Many people struggle because they lack consistency. And consistency is built through discipline. The truth is, discipline isn't what holds you back.Discipline is what sets you free.Today we're going to talk about what discipline really is, why it's so difficult, how science explains it, and how you can develop more of it in your own life.LYTTavares A Garrett Linkshttps://linktr.ee/tavaresagarrettAmazon Books by TAG Publishinghttps://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B08778562HThe Body Synthesis Mind, Body, Nutrition, Results.

Welcome back to Living Your Truth with Tavares. This is Season 11, Episode 4.Today we're talking about direction. Not speed. Not perfection. Not status.Direction.Because one of the biggest mistakes people make in life is focusing more on how fast they're moving instead of where they're actually going. And I think a lot of people today feel overwhelmed, distracted, emotionally exhausted, and mentally scattered because they're moving constantly…but without clear direction.Busy does not always mean purposeful.Movement does not always mean progress. You can be active and still lost. And one thing I've learned is this:Direction determines destination.Your habits.Your mindset.Your environment.Your relationships.Your daily decisions. All of them are either moving you closer to the life you want…or further away from it.So today we're going to talk about direction. How to find it.How to protect it.And why clarity is one of the most powerful things a person can develop.Amazon Books by Tavares Allen Garretthttps://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B08778562HThe Body Synthesis Website Link:Body Synthesis - Mind, Body, Spirit, Nutrition, Results. The Body Synthesis Store Link https://payhip.com/thebodysynthesisThe Black Love Xperience Podcast Season 4hosted by Amber & Tavares https://anchor.fm/black-love-xperienc Tavares A Garrett Linkhttps://linktr.ee/tavaresagarrettemail the show- livingyourtruthpodcast@gmail.com
In this powerful episode of the Man-Up Adventure Podcast, host Terry Gwaltney sits down with Eli Tavarez — Navy veteran, husband, father of four, and leader of Project Savior Outdoors, a ministry on the front lines of fighting veteran suicide through brotherhood, purpose, and the hope of Jesus Christ.Eli grew up in a Christian home with an incredible family legacy, but left his faith behind when he joined the Navy — chasing success, status, and the approval of the world. On paper he had it all. But spiritually and morally, he was bankrupt. It wasn't until his infant daughter's life hung in the balance that God broke through and brought Eli to his knees in one of the most raw and powerful conversion moments you'll ever hear. From that encounter with the living God, Eli's life was transformed — and now he gets front row seats to watching Jesus do the same in the lives of veterans, first responders, and broken men who walk through the doors of Project Savior Outdoors. In this episode:Eli's journey from a legacy of great men to spiritual bankruptcy in the NavyThe terrifying hospital moment that brought him face to face with GodHow discipleship and brotherhood have been at the center of every victory in his walkWhat Project Savior Outdoors is and how it's fighting veteran suicideWhy isolation is one of the enemy's greatest weapons against menThe difference between meeting church and actually meeting Jesus
Welcome back to Living Your Truth with Tavares. This is Season 11, Episode 3.Today we're talking about Humility. And I think humility is one of the most misunderstood qualities in today's world.Because people often confuse humility with weakness. But humility is not weakness.Humility is awareness.Humility is emotional intelligence.Humility is strength under control.A humble person doesn't think less of themselves. They simply don't need to think they're above everybody else. And in a culture where people constantly chase validation, attention, status, and image…Humility has become rare. But I truly believe humility is one of the foundations of growth.Because the moment you believe you know everything…you stop learning. The moment you believe you're above accountability…you stop evolving. And the moment ego controls your life…peace usually disappears. So today we're going to talk about humility. What it really means. Why it matters. How it impacts relationships, leadership, healing, and personal growth. And why some of the strongest people in the world are also the humblest.Tavares A Garrett Linkhttps://linktr.ee/tavaresagarrettAmazon Books by Tavares Allen Garretthttps://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B08778562HThe Body Synthesiswww.thebodysynthesis.com
Welcome back to Living Your Truth with Tavares. This is Season 11, Episode 2.Today we're talking about something that impacts every area of life:Self-confidence.The way you walk into rooms. The way you handle pressure. The way you speak. The way you love. The way you lead. The way you recover from failure.Confidence touches everything. But here's the truth:A lot of people think confidence is something you're born with. It's not.Confidence is built. It's developed through repetition. Through resilience.Through keeping promises to yourself. Through surviving difficult moments and realizing: “I'm stronger than I thought.”And unfortunately, many people lose confidence over time.Life happens.Criticism happens.Rejection happens.Failure happens.Trauma happens.Sometimes confidence doesn't disappear overnight.Sometimes it erodes slowly. One disappointment at a time. But today we're going to talk about rebuilding it.Not fake confidence. Not ego.Not arrogance.Real confidence. The kind that comes from knowing who you are.Tavares A Garrett Linkhttps://linktr.ee/tavaresagarrettAmazon Books by Tavares Allen Garretthttps://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B08778562HThe Body Synthesiswww.thebodysynthesis.com
