Guest: Thomas S. Bottiglieri, D.O. On this episode of Advances in Care, host Erin Welsh sits down with Dr. Thomas Bottiglieri, Chief of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Division at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia, to discuss the evolving landscape of concussion care—from prevalence to emerging diagnostic breakthroughs. With over 2 million estimated concussions occurring annually in the United States and many of them affecting young athletes, Dr. Bottiglieri and his colleagues have sought to develop a more accurate and accessible way to objectively diagnose concussion. While a single injury may not cause long-term issues, research shows that repeated head trauma—and lack of proper care—can lead to premature neurodegeneration. During their research to improve diagnostic measures, Dr. Bottiglieri and his team discovered a biomarker associated with severe concussions: a subtle tremor of the head and neck that becomes amplified when a concussed patient tries to visually focus on a target. This discovery led to the development of ProScope, an innovative eye-tracking software tool that measures head and neck stability and can detect the diagnostic biomarker with over 80% sensitivity. With the advent of these tools, clinicians can now, for the first time, objectively measure concussion. A former competitive athlete himself, Dr. Bottiglieri hopes that the ProScope tool …

TSN Hockey Analyst Mike Johnson joined OverDrive to discuss Auston Matthews' injury from Radko Gudas, George Parros' view on the player safety, the outcomes from the response from the Maple Leafs, Leon Draisaitl's injury impact and Connor McDavid's elevated role, if the Canadiens make the playoffs, Doug Armstrong stepping down as Canada's general manager and who may be next in the role and more.
TSN Host James Duthie joins to discuss Leon Draisaitl's injury for the Oilers, Matthew Schaefer's impressive season for the Islanders, Doug Armstrong stepping down as Hockey Canada's general manager and if Sidney Crosby will be in the role, George Parros' comments on Auston Matthews' injury and more.
At the GM Meetings in Florida, Department of Player Safety was under the microscope following Radko Gudas’s 5-game suspension for the hit that ended Auston Matthews’ season, with many feeling the punishment was too light; George Parros suggested the door is open to changes, including potential third-party input. Ray feels suspensions are largely too lenient and called for a clearer, streamlined rulebook. Meanwhile, Doug Armstrong is stepping down as Team Canada’s Olympic GM - impacting future events like the World Cup - who would a worthy successor be? The NHL also confirmed a 2028 World Cup of Hockey featuring Calgary, Edmonton, and Prague as host cities (notably without a U.S. location), though questions remain about fitting the tournament into an already expanding 84-game schedule. On the safety front, mandatory neck guards for new players will begin next season, with logistics around enforcement still being sorted and roughly 40 approved models available. Finally, Islanders rookie Matthew Schaefer is rumoured to have as many as 1,000 friends and family in attendance for his hometown game in Toronto, capping off a standout season as the 18-year old continues to make waves league-wide.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
